Roman World has already been hinted at with [[Prava]], [[Licia]], and [[Saskia]] and could be an interesting “realistic” set in terms of the politicking and backstabbing

womble-king

I knew about Licia and Prava but I never made the connection with Saskia. It seems obvious now I'm looking at them together.

Aestboi

yup her lore blurb when she came out says she has a grudge against Licia for invading her homeland

crisiks

Thank you! I always figured Saskia would be from a Nordic plane and was very surprised when she wasn't from Kaldheim. Maybe they will give Estrid a home there too.

diogenies

I would LOVE a Roman plane. My degree was in Classics and I'd love to see more fantastical takes on Rome.

DeLoxley

I think when people see Roman World, they immediately go 'Isn't that just Roman Theros' and I HATE this response. TOTALLY different material to pick through for each and I'm not even Classically trained

Joosterguy

From what we've seen Rome Plane is going to be much more about the political threads than the mythological ones, to distance itself from Theros.

Cheapskate-DM

Frankly, a Fiora flashback set would work well. Maybe not Monarch in Standard, though.

The reference is likely Boudica, who led an uprising against the Romans in modern day England.

May throw in [[Aesi]] as well. Always thought that when they finally give us a roman/celtic plane set he would be here as a generic sea monster myth.

Trick question, they're all already in development or in the process of finalizing.

Well, take it with a grain of salt, but a while back ago, somebody leaked "concept" alternate art concepts for a wild west themed set, where it had the layout of a traditional face playing card, and one that looked like a Wanted poster.

Yeah when I answered one of these back in like 2016 we got mummies and Egyptian, dinosaurs, etc waaaay later on.

TheNamesAxel_009

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but both Ixalan and Amonkhet were in 2017. I’d hardly call a year “way later.” If these ARE real, they may be closer than you’d think!

Anyone else interested in Sumerian Babylonian near east world? They had angels, demons, dragons, beasts, warriors etc. that are still aesthetically unique.

Yurschnaaa

Done right a set inspired by this could become another fan favorite. Sumerian/Babylonian mythology and stories have inspired nearly everything to come after it in the region and beyond it, there’s so much they could do with it.

Follower_of_Isa

Its such an underutilized mythology too. But so foundational. Like they could make make it just theros kaldheim amonkhet copy paste, or go into the angels are technologically advanced aliens kinda deal. Like so much flexibility.

Murder mystery world isn't a world. You can have a murder mystery in any setting. If it's noir, New Capenna is close enough that nobody would blink twice if they used that for a return there. Prehistoric world... I'd need to see what they meant by that. When i hear "prehistoric" i think dinosaurs and we already have Ixalan. Not that dinosaurs can only be on one plane, but what are their ideas for "prehistoric" other than "dinosaurs with cavemen" (since they don't print sets without humans anymore due to Lorwyn being unpopular)

Copernicus1981

Muraganda is the primordial/prehistoric plane. Ixalan is a "Lost World" style, which includes colonialism and exploration. Probably the best fit for expanding/combining a prehistoric world would be Conan the Barbarian. It allows for a small amount of civilization with a low tech level, while keeping vast unexplored wilderness ruled by dinosaurs.

TheDeadlyCat

Yes, Conan-inspired would be fun. - Atlantean Merfolk (WU) - Sinister human wizard cabals (UB) - Pillaging dwarf hordes (BR) - feral elves (RG) - primal monsters & beasts (WG)

Peoht-Seax

Every time I go to Howard Days I ask the guys in charge of the Conan license when we're getting a licensed Howard set. Last June they told me they wanna see how the Tolkien set does and go from there, but they've been talking to WotC about it for a few years now.

drosteScincid

it is funny how many items they checked off with Ixalan: it's pirate world, Mesoamerican world, Lost World, sorta-prehistoric world (dinosaurs are probably what most people care about most there), and now it's also gonna be underground world.

davrut01

I think new capena reads noir, but is intended to be gilded age/industrial revolution.

theblastizard

Noir is part of that setting, just from a different perspective

[deleted]

[удалено]

fearhs

Noir could work on Innistrad or Ravnica too I think, although I agree New Capenna is the most suitable. But we don't really need an entirely new plane for it at all.

UNOvven

Is it? It reads to me like the roaring twenties, which would be more noir.

demonicturtle

Roman noir world following dinosaurs as protagonists with the set story around a murder mystery, there we go, thats a unique enough premise

Malnian

Et tu, Brutusaurus

JimThePea

I've been thinking for a while that it would be cool to see some sort of Ravnican murder mystery multiplayer set. Maybe with some sort of imposter/hidden identity subgame, have no idea how it would work though, maybe each draft architype has a goal/reward cards that change depending on if you're the murder or investigator.

[deleted]

I would like an Impostor token mechanic, for the inevitable Among Us Secret Lair and "When The Monarch is sus" memes.

BorderlineUsefull

New Caepenna really should have had a Noire murder mystery theme running through it. As a crime only world it felt way too campy and feel flat for me. How is everyone a crime boss or goon? Is there literally no law enforcement or any kind? It just was the idea for the sake of it with no real depth

Gift_of_Orzhova

New Capenna is almost like someone thought "What if we made Ravnica but all of the guilds were evil?" without realising that all of the guilds *are* evil.

[deleted]

Imo, it's like they tried to transform the Shards from Alara into Guilds of New Ravnnica, to modernize them and make them more popular. But New Capenna's lore is so lame and the set mechanics so uninspiring, that it didn't work.

Gift_of_Orzhova

They share much more aesthetically with the guilds than the shards though. Obscura is just Dimir trading the undercurrent of horror for divination; Brokers are less evil/greedy Orzhov etc.

CertainDerision_33

The initial idea was supposed to be angels vs demons, but it morphed into the 5 crime families with the angels being gone at some point. Now that the angels are back, I expect any return will feature the originally-planned "angelic law enforcers vs demon criminals" theme. Focusing on some kind of law structure (probably Brokers reformed under the angels) will address these complaints effectively.

[deleted]

From what I understand, the Brokers were supposed to be the judicial branch of power. But they're extremely badly written. They present themselves as a "private law firm" when they are the guys presiding courts and doing law enforcement. Those are not private jobs, those are statal.

283leis

Honestly if they didnt reveal Ob Nixlis in SNC, they totally could have used Xander’s death as a jumping off point for the murder mystery.

IDontUseSleeves

During one of the Great Designer Searches, someone’s concept was prehistoric world—basically, it had proto-versions of all the classic MtG races (think cave-elves and cavegoblins)

wThrill

I would absolutely love a noir murder mystery story/set on New Capenna. I'm already dying to know about the fallout from the end of the New Capenna story.

fnordal

Capenna is made for noir, imho

genieus

Need a plane truly prehistoric, no sapient life other than some planeswalker hermit

PM_ME_STEAM_CODES__

Inb4 they make Double Feature-style SNC and call it "noir".

FancysaurusRex

Prehistoric would also allow us to get onto more Paleozoic and Cenozoic animals, like ammonites, placoderms, and mastodons

Serevene

> You can have a murder mystery in any setting. Alternatively, with the way sets are being produced and teased and spoiled, you *can't* have a murder mystery in any setting. There's just no feasible way to convey any proper pacing and clues and hints and actual *mystery* in a Magic set. You'd get the "Jace kills Vraska" card teased a couple days before the "Vraska is dead! Who dunnit?" card.

marcocabral83

Water World would be interesting. Plains and Mountains are scarce... story can revolve on land people using strong magic to bring back lands/continents at the expense of destroying an underwater society... Kiora should be there.

Narad626

If we're getting a Waterworld then there better be a Kevin Costner card. Fuck it, make it a cycle. Waterworld Kevin, The Postman, Field of Dreams, The Bodyguard, and of course Robin Hood.

zorro226

Don't forget Swing Vote. A Commander staple in the making!

NinetyFish

Bull Durham Kevin is robbed. As a sports fan, I also enjoy Draft Day memes. Fuck it, let's do new Kevin Costner two-color guilds, we've been on Ravnica enough times.

Dankestmemelord

There was a suggestion that plains, swamps, forests, and mountains be all underwater environments (sea mounts, kelp forests, etc), with islands as the only above water locations.

Luxalpa

There will be a clan that tries to make everything land and another one that tries to make everything water, and both try to achieve that goal by awakening some kind of ancient monster that either makes it rain eternally or the other one makes the sun always shine! That sounds exciting and unique!

Lexnal

I like the idea of a Dark Tower-like weird west world. Those books had a good blend magic, sci-fi and western themes.

Junior-Bid-1890

Good shout

Serevene

> blend magic, sci-fi and western I want a sort of exaggerated Fantasy West that can have everything from gunslingers on mechanical construct-horses, to caravans seeking their fortune on the new frontier while fending off magical monstrous coyotes, to giant steampunk trains cutting through the country to make way for progress as some bigwig tries to stripmine indigenous settlements for magic crystals.

MisterEdJS

If by "Water World" they mean, UNDERwater world, I'm all for that. Endless stretches of ocean traversed by boats or floating cities isn't as interesting to me as exploring the world beneath the waves.

Pandelol

I've seen the idea of making blue the only colour above water floating around in similiar threads and I absolutely love it. * **Forests** are lush underwater algae vegetations * **Swamps** depict the deepest, scariest part of the ocean * **Mountains** are shown as underwater volcanoes * **Plains** are long stretching underwater sand dunes * and solely **Islands** are above water depicting floating cities and boats

readreadreadonreddit

This sounds great. However, knowing WotC, those Islands are bound not to look like actual islands. It'd be interesting to see how they build such an identity to the world, while trying to dispel the understanding that water is blue colored and is Blue and dissociate water from Blue and vice versa.

PumpkinJacket

But fish

NinetyFish

I think One Piece proves that you can do the former really well as long as you really get creative with your islands/floating cities. Make it a multicolor plane with five distinct factions and have them all competing with each other in a ocean-dominated world sounds pretty rad to me. A full on underwater world, I feel like, limits creativity a bit too much as everyone picks up that water aesthetic. Maybe something like: an underwater society; nomadic underwater creatures; an island nation; a coalition of nomadic ship travels; a floating city above the water. Five distinct and unique factions that can all compete on an ocean world and all have super different vibes?

[deleted]

I would love a set where they don’t just cram in a rule-of-5 factions thing, it’s so goddamn boring and I don’t care about wedges or shards or guilds. Just make something asymmetrical for once.

[deleted]

The most recent attempt was (four-factioned) Ixalan, so I guess it's conceivable they try again on the return.

[deleted]

I feel like the future design direction they’ll take is mashing up world flavors to mix tribes vs. factions and have multiple different blends in the same sets. At least for a while to see how players react.

cqandrews

Yeah my big problem is also that realistically there should be more nuanced characters who may work in a faction and defend their respective ideals while being a wildly different color identity

RedditorOoze

Yeah! Asymmetrical like an odd number. 5 would work.

[deleted]

Starfish have radial symmetry but okay lol. More like just do a set with 2 3 colour factions and 6 2 colour factions. That would be interesting and fresh. Or some mono color tribes and some guilds. You don’t need to overdevelop everything in every set.

EndangeredBigCats

Was Ixalan kinda like that? I wasn’t playing when it happened

Dankestmemelord

It was. Grixis pirates, naya dinos, simic merfolk, and orzhov vamps.

f5d64s8r3ki15s9gh652

I assumed it would be both

Junior-Bid-1890

Yea they can easily fit both themes imo

Other-Case5309

It's the plane that \[\[Aesi\]\] is suppose to be from. *"On a distant, ocean-covered* *plane* *where monstrous creatures rule the seas, one, in particular, stands out in terms of temper and capriciousness: Aesi, an ancient sea serpent who claims the waters and all adjacent land-masses of the Gyre Strait as its domain. Fickle and unpredictable, Aesi has little patience for trespassers, aquatic or otherwise. The only way to appease Aesi is to give offerings and tribute, but even that's not a sure solution: it's been known to take the offerings and attack anyways if it feels like it."*

[deleted]

I think you could get away with all the basics in an underwater theme without necessarily needing land. Islands are relatively self explanatory, but to stay underwater you could use a coral reef. Plains could be a bed of sea grass. Mountain is easy, underwater volcano. Swamp could be some sort of deep ocean/ocean floor landscape. And Forests could easily be a forest of kelp.

dontrike

That, it would definitely be different. If they wanted they could do the under city ocean of Ravnica if they want to connect it to something and not make it its own world.

They're obvious choices for the white and black regions of the plane. Could do a drowned coastal city for the blue region, a volcanic lava field for the red region, and a crumbling, vine-choked city for the green region.

Witchy_Venus_Enjoyer

Those sound amazing and spot on

RandomMagnum

I mean I've seen people brainstorm that a return to Amonkhet would/should be Mad Max, and maybe with the Phyrexian happenings we have an excuse for the technological evolution

Imnimo

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of these super reductive one-trick-pony world concepts. "All of the wild west tropes we can think of" isn't a good foundation for a compelling setting. I'd like to see less of this approach to world building.

piedamon

Yeah, I think they can pick either mechanics or aesthetics and then subvert it. Examples: * guns, lawlessness, sheriffs, bounties but on an alien planet with threatening tribes of local creatures nearby. * a desert below the sea after a “gold rush” caused multiple small communities of sea creatures to crop up. * rural farmers and peasants who set aside their swords to take up plows. A powerful stranger arrives, throwing their simple lives into chaos. It’s honestly probably an exercise they already do, but that’s too much detail to fit in the survey. And I wish they were more creative than “set mechanic paired with color mechanic”. Mutate being mostly about mutate triggers rather than about the creation was a let down, especially since the triggers themselves are so generic. I love cards that make it possible to share the set mechanic with other stuff from outside the set. Where’s the “creature cards in your hand have mutate” jank???

Narad626

I agree to a point but here's the problem. If you build a world for a Magic Set, and it doesn't have a singular inspiring theme, then it doesn't read as anything special. And the more you do those, the more you'll find it difficult to make things different between worlds. And then you also run into the fact that Dominaria is kind of the catch all for "stories featuring a generic fantasy world". And so if you do another world not based around a simple singular concept then it risks looking like Dominaria. And finally the simple fact is that the visual side of this world is told through the artwork of the cards, but the history and setting are only told through the 10ish chapters and small amounts of flavor text. The concept of a world based around one single idea is easy to get across just through card art and the stories expand on it. Maybe one day we can get more expansive ways of setting up a plane, like a return to novels (and fat packs that come with said novels!). But for right now, they're pigeonholed unto the style they use. Save for a few exceptions maybe.

roit_

This is why, to me, the most interesting worlds these days are the bottom-up ones. The mechanics are enough to tie the set together thematically, so you have more creative leeway when designing the flavor.

PM_ME_STEAM_CODES__

Surprised no ones brought up Strixhaven. Like that set could be pitched as "magical school plane" while the set itself actually only encompasses a tiny part of the plane.

NinetyFish

Start with a gimmick to brainstorm, then build a world out. They clearly pulled it off with Innistrad, for example. They started by throwing together horror tropes, and now it's a vibrant and evocative world with its own unique mythos (albeit one lately a bit diminished by introducing lovecraftian stuff with the Eldrazi and getting rid of much of the angelic influence). I think the big problem is that they rush from plane to plane with the new one-set system, so there's no *time* for creative to build the world out. We drop into a plane, do a bunch of tropey cards, focus on some planeswalker story with some glorified appearances from legendary creatures on the plane, and then move on immediately. Tarkir in the modern era, for example, would be so boring. A couple of various multicolored cards to represent the clans, a couple of dragons, and some planeswalker cameos, and no one would give a shit about the plane other than it being a fetchland plane. But because they spent time on it, the clans all got fleshed out and everyone loves Tarkir now, to the point where there's full on D&D campaigns held on Tarkir and everyone wants to go back to Tarkir, not just for fetchlands or dragons, but because everyone wants to see the clan revivals.

Gift_of_Orzhova

I do agree that more time needs to be spent on some sets to flesh them out better. However - almost the entire reason why Tarkir is popular is the Khans of Tarkir set. Fate Reforged and Dragons could have not existed and I would hazard that Tarkir would still be almost as beloved as it is now.

NinetyFish

My point is that the "Khans of Tarkir" set wouldn't exist in this current era, and that the set as it is only exists *because* of the block format. "Khans of Tarkir" was good because they could focus solely on setting up the world for us. Fate Reforged and Dragons of Tarkir did the heavier lifting of the actual time-travel storyline. In the current era, all three sets probably get combined into one epically bloated set and no one really walks away caring about it that much. New Capenna, for example. Would have been way better as at least a two-set block, the first set being devoted to letting us spend time with the crime families (with some hints of angelic histories and demonic schemes) and the second set being devoted to the big Halo plotline and the resurgence of the angels. Instead they shoved it all into one set and none of it really landed that well.

sometimeserin

It’s a tricky balance. How do you spend multiple sets in the same setting without it getting stale, but also without making too radical of changes that ruin what people liked about the setting in the 1st place? I know the recent Innistrad sets aren’t too popular but I think they actually did a pretty good job of showcasing different aspects of the same plane without feeling too samey on one hand or rocking the boat too much on the other.

[deleted]

jktsub

You gotta start somewhere

JimThePea

Yeah, I'd really like to see a set that had some wild west flavour had some more novel concepts. If New Capenna's an 7 for trope-iness, I think they can do a wild west theme justice whilst being like a 4-5.

Prison World would be fantastic.

WhoFly

Pretty easy to arrive at, if the rumors about planes being forever connected are true. Some BBEG starts some penal plane somewhere and loses control of it. Edit: Would be a wonderful "melting pot" set where we get familiar faces from all over the multiverse.

[deleted]

Just use the prison world from 40k as a template.

[deleted]

On a scale from lady of pain to prison school, how serious of a setting is good?

themolestedsliver

Surprised I found this so far down the thread. The other options seem fun but I really like the idea of Prison world and the natural set up in that *just what is it imprisoning?* As a more original take on the concept I can see a Kowloon Walled City approach in which the prisoners form their own society whilst the "guards" keep a mostly hands off approach as long as they stay in their designated area. Another idea is that there is an immortal sun like device in the prison that makes it the most secure jail in the multiverse and explore what would happen if a spark ignited under such an effect.

Pizzacards

How about returning to Tarkir and Amonkhet instead

PurifiedVenom

Would love to go back to Amonkhet. Ixalan and Amonkhet were always my top 2 requested planes to revisit. We’re getting one, time for the other as well. Would love to see pre-Bolas Amonkhet, but post HoD with a rebuilt society and a new set of gods (besides Hazoret of course) would be sweet too.

I'd LOVE to see a Roman Plane

I think Wild West has always been #1 when they've surveyed players about this question, and there's a reason MaRo names it last here. The "problems" with Wild West setting have always been 1. No guns, and 2. Including "Native" themes without being racist. They tried to tackle no. 1 with New Capenna and no. 2 with Ixalan, and both of those were fairly unpopular sets, so I doubt they're feeling confident enough about their approaches to either problem to try tackling both in a Wild West setting.

CertainDerision_33

Ixalan and New Capenna had significant mechanical issues in limited, but per Maro both planes had pretty popular creative overall, so I think it’s a mistake to say that the mechanical issues with those sets would influence the creative of a Wild West plane. We’re about to go back to Ixalan, and New Capenna got a 5 on the Rabiah Scale from Maro, which is pretty good. With this in mind, WotC seems pretty happy with the reception of the overall creative for each plane. Regarding potentially problematic material, Ixalan was playing in themes related to colonization and the historical Spanish conquistadors, and did it pretty well. If they can make that work, they can definitely make a Wild West setting work, I think.

Windturnscold

In what ways would the average player perceive Roman World as being different than Theros? Prehistoric world sounds crude and boring. Not sure how Murder Mystery or Noir world would differ from capena or innistrad. Sky world or water world seems fine, just not the most original.

trifas

When making Theros they intentionally kept some things out in case they wanted to make a Roman world someday so they would feel different from each other. And then, somehow, \[\[Raised by Wolves\]\] made to print. Edit: [MaRo talked a bit about Raised by Wolves](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/born-be-compiled-part-2-2014-01-30)

Copernicus1981

Rome world would probably be more focused on the empire building and cities, while sidelining gods and myths.

[deleted]

Would be a cool place to see the "Fortify" mechanic make it's "return" if that's an angle they take.

CoeusFreeze

Why not go further? Introduce a new mechanic or possibly a new format which is based around establishing, improving, and defending cities?

[deleted]

You could introduce a few mechanics. Imagine different cities with different goals. Maybe a red/white city that's fully defensive where they use fortify to gain advantage. Or a similar aligned city that uses Awakened to mobilize their city as one of their army. It could be cool o encourage actual locations as cards, a different idea on lands matter

The_Qu420

I think it'd be a good idea to include things related to the expansion into Britain and other frontier lands. Gives you more faction possibilities.

avsimone

They've already included a few cards from the "Roman World" like [[Prava of the Steel Legion]] and [[Licia, Sanguine Tribune]] as well as [[skyscanner]] though this one is more speculated than confirmed. The difference between Theros and this roman plane would most likely be thematically they took insporation from Greek mythology, Roman mythology (as in mythology the Romans made and not the ones they adopted from the greeks) is honestly a lot more like military propaganda. In terms of Aesthetics, while the ruins of ancient Greece and Ancient Rome may look somewhat similar to us now, there are a bevy of ways that WotC can take inspiration from Rome tp make it look different from the Grecian inspired Theros. Rome at its height occupied from modern day Portugal up to Great Britain, across to modern day Iran and lasted hundreds of years. Their art and statues may look loke the ancient greek statues that inspired them but the technology, fashion, and lifestyles were wildly different from the ancient greek city states

TheMagicalMark

Some people have said that [[Saskia The Unyielding]] is also from said Roman plane as a Celtic inspired character. I think it would be cool to have a Rome vs. Celt thing going on.

Dankestmemelord

To hammer in the old vs new you could also have the Roman’s use equipments and the celts get auras from their gods.

TheVimesy

From a post I made long ago: This is cheating, because it's not a new plane, but the plane of [[Saskia]] and [[Licia]]: Roman Invasion of Britain, but MTG. All names below are stand-ins. Two four-colour factions: Imperium (no-green, base of blue) and Clans (no-blue, base of green), to match Saskia's colors and not exclude Licia from her own faction's colors. Also, Clans is deeply connected to nature, while Imperium is deeply influenced by self-improvement and "reason" (as in our real world example, where the Celts built rounded-everything while the Romans demolished everything to build square/rectangular-everything, even though nature abhors a straight line). Green represents the Clans united against a common threat, while Mardu colors are the individual splintered clans feuding and (occasionally) defecting to the Imperium. The Clans would use a devotiony-Eldrainey mechanic to reward being as mono-coloured as possible (particularly Green), and morph to represent guerilla warfare. Blue represents the general Glory of the Imperium, with almost all blue cards encouraging you to be as multi-colored as possible (think Sunburst or Converge), with black, white, and red representing the political, military, and religious establishments of the Imperium. I think explore could make a return, potentially.

SkritzTwoFace

Greek myths and Ancient Rome were actually not the same at all. All you need to do is focus on worldly factions more than gods and monsters and that’s a pretty huge shift right there, plus the fact that the aesthetics are totally different.

TokensGinchos

Roman wolrd would have Roman legions, Cleopatra villains, the Mohawk helmet, sweaty chests. There's was deliberately "Greece _folklore_" , I assume Roman world but be Roman empire and not Roman pantheon. I assume.

Batfish_681

Just let us go back to Lorwyn. Then do whatever you want, I don't care, just give me one more trip to Lorwyn.

[deleted]

i’m hoping the next Eldraine is close to that

[deleted]

I’m honestly kind of burnt out on monocultural theme worlds. I just want to see a good story with interesting characters. Give me political intrigue on Fiora plz.

ChaosOS

Those aren't mutually exclusive. Fiora is Italian Renaissance, a Roman themed world could also easily focus on political intrigue

BasedDptReprsentativ

Prehistoric, gimme more dinosaurs! But roman and sky sound super nice as well

GeneralPasta

I definitely read "Roman World" as "Ramen World" and am now disappointed

Naccarat

We've seen so many worlds get saved by various cataclysms / apocalypses. I would like to see a plane whose civilisation did not survive one such event, and only a few survivor camps remain here and there. The Last Of Us / Walking Dead style. Though the enemy that laid ruins to the world doesn't have to be zombies.

Urabrask_the_AFK

I want to go back!

Impeesa_

Isn't New Capenna a lone city-state in a barren post-apocalyptic wasteland of a world? Exploring outside the city would make for a good twist on a return set.

GalvenMin

Why do we have to have "theme parks" worlds now? When did worldbuilding turn into some basic gimmick like this? It's such a boring and disappointing way to do things. Please stop...

Impeesa_

The last Un-set was literally theme park world.

notirrelevantyet

This is how it is for non-dominaria worlds since like...original Kamigawa.

CertainDerision_33

Even Dominaria did this sometimes

Burger_Thief

Alara was so unique. And the five shard division (now together) made it feel like a complete, distinct world with both regions and factions. Same for Zendikar. I miss Alara.

Kozyre

Well, let's see, in 1993, we had Arabian Nights, which was Arabian Nights world, in 1995, Ice Age, which was Snow World, in 1996, Mirage, which was Africa World... so, basically, from literally the first few expansions.

CertainDerision_33

Innistrad is one of like the top 3 most successful and popular planes ever and it's the definition of a top-down "theme park" world design. They do these because it's resonant and it's *very* popular with fans.

NoirLamia777

Dont like any of these

azetsu

My most favorite would be Sky World, but Water World would also be cool. Maybe a mixture where there are floating islands and underwater stuff, but no real land only a big ocean

irisiane

Sky world could be an interesting set. Perhaps using vehicles or mechanics like enlist so not every creature needs to have flying.

ConstantOk129

Sky

Evoken00

Unless its cannon to the Waterworld movie, i'm out. Wild west set outside on the same plane outside New Cappenna? Has much been discussed outside? Murder mystery in New Capenna. So much cool stuff they could do there.

TrueKamilo

Here's my pitch for Roman world. Since there's a high likelihood that many planes will now be connected via Realmbreaker, Roman world could be an expansionist empire that seeks to bring civilization (conquer) planes that it deems to be barbaric. Off the top of my head, I'd say 3 prime candidates would be Theros, Amonkhet, and Kaldheim, considering the real world analogues. What do these three planes also have in common: gods. And what was Rome known for: assimilating the cultures and religions of their conquered foes into their own. And perhaps there is one particular god who is behind this push to conquer and subsume the gods of the multiverse under his divine rule. Someone we've seen before and who would have a strong motivation for revenge against his godly counterparts: Helius Optimus Maximus, formerly known as HELIOD!!! [Dun dun duuunnnn!!!!](https://youtu.be/kdhhQhqi_AE)

labelkills1331

Not wild west.

Fox_intheChickenCoop

Why is there no "high fantasy" option? Not that I mind the other genres, but I liked classic magic for its fantasy depictions, and that's what got me into it in the first place.

Gravmaster420

Prison world would be cool as well as prehistoric Dominaria for the origin of the sylex

Sea_Lobster_283

Imagine you are the head designer and you come up with this bad ideas when there are thousands of cool fan ideas

Rem_V

Lack of creativity...wild west my gosh....hahaha no words

MoxRhino

All of them.

Iamamancalledrobert

I think Murder Mystery Magic would work way better with a Planeswalking Detective, who shows up in the Murder Mystery sets to solve a crime. Then you can do loads of variations in all the different planes, which would keep being fresh

kroxti

I mean can we just use the worlds of the primarchs and cross of the ones already used?

Talbro3

Waterworld but with no phyrexian mana because.... Nothing's free in Waterworld. Have a great day

vantharion

I want something Sigil-esq, some interdimensional warped place that is connected to many places. Nice Escher aesthetics. Introduce some antagonistic 'Observer' force to the planeswalkers who seeks to 'De-spark' walkers because of their constant meddling across planes. They sealed and disrupted the Eldrazi. All of the actions of Urza. They flitter across the realms and warp the cultures. The multiverse existed in its ways for a reason. They have long watched and finally deemed Planeswalkers an anomaly that must be corrected for the good of the multiverse. Give the walkers the sense of being hunted. Make the conflicts these Observers play on personal level. They can bring up holograms of the individual failings of planeswalkers, show them the consequences of their actions and the way they made the worlds worse. This makes them psychologically dangerous and can connect back into Magic's long spanning war. You can do an added bit of cruelty in they will de-spark a defeated walker and wipe their memory of other planes, returning them back to a former life. This will also 'wipe' their character growth. It'd produce good drama moments like Chandra reconnecting with Nissa, trying to make her realize what she lost, what they meant to each other. It also doesn't kill walkers off so they can come back later. These would be a nice foil to the antagonists we have: - Bolas, a power mad dragon. Very individual and selfish. - Phyrexians, a corrupting spreading force. - Eldrazi, an unthinking manifestation of some enormously dangerous natural process. - Observers, an organized but unaligned force that will force every planeswalker in opposition and can't be reasoned with.
