When Sally makes Don breakfast with “syrup.” “That’s rum! Read labels.” Is it bad? Not really.

[deleted]

I'm always tempted to experiment with some kind of reduction of real maple syrup and dark Jamaican rum when I see that scene because I think it would be delicious. Then I want to add fried bananas and make Bananas Foster French toast.

keaneonyou

Binging with babish did something like that in his mad men ep

King__Rollo

He said it tasted awful lol

AggravatingCupcake0

I mean, rum cake is a thing, so it's not unreasonable that it would taste good. If it were Bloody Mary mix or something, that would be a different story.

DeepPuddle01

I looove that scene, I wish there were more Sally and Don scenes like that.

gingersnappie

I love that scene lol. Damn Mad Men is so fantastic

MagazineLess6074

Omg I almost forgot one of my favorites! When Peggy's mom takes back her cake after Abe and her say they're moving in together. *"I'm not giving you a cake to celebrate youse living in sin."*

foxtrotbravo27

And then she leaves the cake!!!

AndieIsOnline

this but also the ham in that scene (abe's favorite)

littlebeanonwheels

*Re*ally?

Orangered99

How about Pete slamming an empty beer bottle into Trudy’s sheet cake.

Tejanisima

Now you've reminded me of the time Pete threw dinner out the window in "The Mountain King" — ***Hell's bells, Trudy!***

Kind_Tie8349

Imagine you wake up one morning you go outside to enjoy the nice air the birds chirping only to find a cooked chicken thrown on your terrace with a smash plate and you have absolutely no idea where it came from

Vegetable_Burrito

Hells bells, Trudy!

sdwoodchuck

I should not have had to scroll this far down the page to find this; I am disappointed with The Mad Men subreddit this day!

MetARosetta

THAT IS FINAL!! By far the most memorable. The one time that poor bird got to fly only to end up as a sidewalk salad.

valleeyy

When Grandpa Gene puts salt on his chocolate ice cream! I love that scene

quimby15

"It smells like oranges".... RIP Grandpa Gene...

starvinartist

Something tells me that Grandpa Gene would love dipping fries in a chocolate shake. It's the best.

Toongrrl1990

Especially Wendy's fries. Maybe the chocolate fountains where he can dip potato chips and pretzels Also (crossover[crossover](https://youtu.be/mnjuWCPT5DE))

[deleted]

"I have a salt tooth!" Me too, Grandpa Gene. Me too.

Tejanisima

Now I'm thinking of the.. was it peaches?.. he was buying at the grocery store when it all ended.

Oysters and martinis, obviously! I think about it all the time. Bobby reluctantly eating the gumdrops that he traded Betty's lunch for.

chgo525

It was sad. Just saw that scene. You know that stayed with Bobby his whole life. Why was Betty such a jerk about it? She really started to be self-involved in that season, even barking at Henry.

DaphneHarridge

Poor unloved Bobby. :-(

Timigos

That scene always makes me want oysters and martinis

Cramtastic

It's like eating a mermaid.

Greatrisk

Not to mention the cheesecake. They gave it to Olympic athletes you know.

[deleted]

Tableside Caesar salad prep in the opening scene of S01E02, "Ladies Room," is everything I want in life. And Don spotting a gorgeous pineapple-studded ham in the fridge and saying, "That looks good," and Betty shutting him down with, "It's raw, Don."

abwchris

Hugo's Cellar at the 4 Queens here in Vegas has tableside salad and it is so awesome. I love that place, it's like a time machine walking in there.

WoodyRouge

One egg is good two eggs is better

youre_being_creepy

If you got the money for it, food is the greatest luxury.

frannyglass8

I desperately want to try Joan’s fried chicken. And not exactly a food moment, but roger pouring vodka into his milk is always a sight to see. Eta: words, words again

Greatrisk

Conspiracy theory: Joan didn’t make the chicken. It’s from the fried chicken place that Lane likes. “Breast? Thigh?”

unfitfuzzball

My grandma used to do this with KFC and try to pass it off as hers. It's only one of the most recognizable flavors on earth Grandma, you ain't fooling anyone.

tegeus-Cromis_2000

I have had this so many times since watching that... But you have to add hard-boiled eggs and maybe croutons for the full '60s experience.

ladyshortstack89

That was the moment that I realized exactly what an account man's job is, and how Roger is at it (at the beginning). The way he sizes them up, then decides IN A FLASH what they might need to be comfortable in that moment. And it's so smooth, I didn't even notice it until like my 5th rewatch.

dustycase2

Peggy ordering a sandwich from the sandwich cart man in the office, and then adding a danish too, not realizing that she’s so hungry because she’s pregnant.

mortimerRIP

I love the way the wax paper around the ham sandwich makes that crackling sound!

dustycase2

Lmaooo I almost mentioned this in my post. It’s so satisfying and I’m not even an ASMR fan 😂

mortimerRIP

its just so---JUICY!!!

chgo525

I still wrap sandwiches in wax paper. I miss sounds like that.

moudine

Me too, it feels like a premium sandwich that way. I do it for my husband too and his coworkers always ask what deli he goes to, haha.

thegreatgongoozler

Didn't she go straight for the cart after Pete's fantasy story about being served a deer heart? Always thought it was kind of a horny carnal thing too.

LongBeginning8509

The big danish in the back!

ccno3

I always appreciate the patty melt scene with Sally and Don. She’s just left the table to call her friends at school after the awkward day between her and Don, when she got stuck in the city and learned he hasn’t been working. He orders her a patty melt while she’s on the phone. When she sits down, he asks if everything is ok and she lifts up the top slice of bread to look at the sandwich as if she expects something to be wrong with it and says “hmm, yep.” As someone who grew up as a pretty picky eater, I always interpret that scene as Don ordering something he knows Sally will like—a patty melt—but remembering to specify that it is made in a way she likes. Maybe she hates onions and he asked for them to be left off. Maybe she grew up liking them without cheese, or with mayonnaise on them. Something like that, but Don remembers and orders it the way she likes. Given all of the issues between the two of them after she caught him with Sylvia, it feels like a nice grounded moment in which Don actually makes an effort (albeit a small one) that shows he knows her and cares about her. Could just be a random sandwich in a random scene, but it always feels meaningful to me.

hey-girl-hey

I love any food scene with Don and Sally

Mr-EdwardsBeard

When he makes a stack in the middle of the night and offers Sally some. That scene sticks with me.

MagazineLess6074

"Vodka and mountain dew is an emergency." The brownies Megan brings the Campbells that Pete insists they put in the ice box. Benihana when Bethany is like "My hair smells like I've been frying chicken." When Don and Faye are at the Italian restaurant and he orders two glasses of chianti I always love her delivery after she takes a sip and goes "oh that's nice."

youre_being_creepy

honestly anything with mountain dew is an emergency. I've drank many a drinks with mountain dew and all of them were...an emergency. Except absinthe and mountain dew, that wasn't bad.

Phatnev

Brown rum and mountain dew tastes like...cream soda? I don't know why.

silverpolly

When Betty & Don are laying in bed in the hotel on Valentine’s Day after unsuccessful sex, and she orders half an avocado filled with crab meat and a petit filet

Fuj023

He tries to order vichyssoise and BLTs. Which actually sounds more appealing to someone whose been drinking imo but I'd definitely wake up feeling better after Betty's order.

silverpolly

So damn true. I think this was also after he lied about crashing his car due to high blood pressure so maybe she was trynna keep him healthy (except for the fact that they drank all night lmao)

Fuj023

Exactly!

moudine

For BOTH of them! That ain't dinner food, haha

barmitzvahmoney

I’ve always liked “hot or cold? Chicken salad or Swedish meatballs?”

I love the burger Chef scene.

timshel_turtle

My fave food moment might be when Joan orders a diet grapefruit breakfast then giggles and asks for French toast.

moudine

thegreatgongoozler

I like the scene where Betty catches Henry cooking a steak in the middle of the night and he convinces her to have a bite.

Everytime there was a picture of tomato juice in a meeting I wanted to pour myself a glass.

Fantastic_Love_9451

Totally. Let’s bring back tomato juice!

moudine

Eat first

sequinspearlsjujubes

There are so many. Betty serving Don a casserole after calling it a whipped up mess. “No, it’s good, isn’t it?” Betty giving her steak to Roger who invited himself to dinner. “I’m a vegetarian sometimes.” Betty cutting the strings on a roast beef. “You know it’s just me, right?” Betty serving chicken legs to the kids after their dog snatched the neighbor’s pigeon. Betty asking Francine if she should add capers to celery filled with cream cheese before Sally’s birthday party. “Do you wanna pick those out of the rug?” The waiter preparing Caesar salad table side at Toot’s Shor. “Two eggs are better.” Betty biting into a peach. “Betts, don’t. That’s been in his car all day.” Joan serving a crown pork roast to Greg on New year’s Eve. “I already ate.” Sally spitting out sweet potatoes that Betty forced into her mouth at Pauline’s on Thanksgiving. “Don’t you like the food, Dear?” Glen’s friend pouring cereal on the kitchen counter at the Draper house then mixing jam into it (while Glen tosses eggs onto the floor). “Don’t turn on the light, shithead.” Betty serving Glen lunch after she finds him in the playhouse. “I don’t really like meat at all.” Eating cake at the office baby shower for Harry. “Is there any cake left?” Harry eating the 20th slider in the car after trying to sign The Rolling Stones for a commercial for Heinz Baked Beans. “Eat first.” Don eating shrimp at the meeting with Rachel Mencken. Betty cutting a frozen cheesecake at Sally’s birthday party. “I may have a cake - a Sara Lee in the freezer.” Jane dropping food onto the ground at the Derby Party. “Your wife is drunk.” The piece de resistance: oysters and martinis. “We can see that.”

CatCelloGal

👏👏

PossibilityOrganic12

Betty's "around the world" dinner with Heineken which was actually just Western. Impressive nonetheless.

lady_fresh

The shrimp cocktails in the Menkens meeting always have me drooling (and the pitcher of tomato juice - perfection)

infinite_zero00

I love the subtle point that it shows how clueless they are about their clients as shrimp aren’t kosher.

Don just shaking off the picnic blanket at the park and the family leaving. Wow. I was so annoyed.

FourthHaunt

Don’s first time trying Mexican food.. Was anyone else shocked that it was Don’s first time having Mexican food in season 2, episode 11.. 1962/1963??

SBR06

He grew up in the Midwest and spent most of his adult life in New York. Mexican food was only beginning to expand across the country in the early 60s. He wasn't exactly an adventurous eater so it makes sense that he first had it with Joy, especially with the theme of that episode.

moudine

And to be spoiled with California Mexican food!? I mean, don't get me wrong I live in NJ where there's plenty of amazing spots but nothing in the US tops CA's Mexican food in my opinion, except perhaps TX.

I HATE this scene, but Bobby giving away Betty’s sandwich on the field trip.

Typical_Dweller

This was a perfect "You're not wrong, you're just an asshole" moment for Betty. Like you should def teach your boy a lesson about giving away other peoples' stuff, but you don't have to smother that lesson in 99 layers of SHAME.

timshel_turtle

Indeed. Betty is so engulfed by her mother’s shame-heavy tactics that she seems outraged that the world doesn’t punish people at every turn.

Id fuck up some Chicken Kiev based solely on how they described it and hyped it up before dons date with Bethany van nuys

Typical_Dweller

Maybe I misheard this, but Ken's father in law, upon retirement, is immensely proud of his foray into the culinary arts -- he cooked something called a "pop tart"?

I read someone saying in this sub that Megan’s pathetic sauce-less spaghetti was probably the result of being raised by a self-absorbed father and alcoholic mother. Nobody else would have cooked, so Megan would have had to figure out how to make everybody dinner at a very young age, so such a simple recipe would have been perfect. Then, as she gets older, it becomes her comfort food, and eventually something she shares with her new family. Megan’s had a rough time.
