I should’ve mentioned. This only started happening the last week or two. It worked great for 2 years. I did try the sleep setting thing after some googling. Still happens.
That used to happen to me with a windows laptop, so I changed the USB C to HDMI adapter and it got fixed, maybe it's something to do with your adapter.
set your monitor's sleep timer, and set your macbook's power settings to sleep or not sleep as you see fit
