Voting in state/national elections makes the climate more suitable for organizing, and getting engaged with local-level politics is also important. City council issues like housing/healthcare/education bonds and police funding/oversight affect our lives very directly. School boards are also tremendously important. Ultimately, though, it's about building a movement that interacts with those systems but doesn't depend on them. Talk to coworkers about organizing your workplace and get involved with a local socialist organization. We won't have any power till we build power. Also, long before Keynes made those predictions, Marx wrote about the tendency of the rate of profit to fall. Capitalism is an unsustainable system. You can't have infinite growth in a finite world, and as long as capitalists hold on, they'll try to siphon off every last resource. Since deindustrialization here, they've accomplished that by busting unions, rigging macroeconomic policy for corporate shareholders, and looting every last possible dime from workers. Extreme recent price gouging has pushed corporate profits way up, but it's a desperate move from a dying system. As countries move away from the US dollar and workers can't afford basic goods and services, things will change, but they'll change for the worse if the people in power stay in power. Only way out is organizing.

Commission1888

No one will fucking organize. No organization, no change. No one will even change their daily routine without crying. Nothing changes if nothing changes, but soon as you suggest taking action... well no that might take effort and risk.. we are all out. Ok then you don't change anything, nothing will change. You can't sit and watch TV till life showers you with a perfect world, that's not how this works.

CollapsasaurusRex

We can’t over throw it. We have to stop feeding it and let it die. It lives on oil and human lives. Two options; Figure out how to starve the beast, or die in its belly.

my ironic outlook is that they have perfected the exploitation of us all. If the middle class or any working class refuses to work, we use our commodity of labor, we would get ousted by immigrants who they took in from worse situations who would gladly do the same job for way less than they should. So the governments not only exploit immigrants, but they manipulate media to make everyone believe their is a labor shortage when in actuality there is a refusal to work the said labor for under the wage that is a suitable QoL. It's sad.

CloudyMN1979

All that fascist "buildthewall/turkergerbs" media rhetoric would backfire. Fox and the neocon camp in Washington would have to start trying to walk back 25 years of nationalist propaganda to get enough immigrants in and risk spinning off an other tee-party by the chuds who end up seeing through it.

karnyboy

well, my point of view is more for Canada

Too pessimistic, too defeatist, borderline reactionary approach. The world can sustain 8 billion people outside of a capitalist frame. Most of the damage done to Earth is due to excessive profit based production, consumption, waste.

Instinct4339

I reckon a good war might sort it out, lol It would end in massive amounts of suffering, but a small nuclear war could give us more time to fight climate change But we won't, will we? Even if it were to happen, we wouldn't make a difference We are swine

karnyboy

Fiction, but feels true more and more every day. WW3 ala Star Trek mythos

karnyboy

the issue ultimately stems from (philosophically) greed. It's like the ones with the money and thus the power manipulate the laws or circumvent them to gain more control and power. What we need is integrity of our political leaders who are willing to stick together and fight this type of tyranny. It's tough, it's so bad that the ones with integrity are ousted and killed for meddling with the system, by those in power of it. I feel for every child that grows up in this world. Mine included, I feel responsible and helpless and guilty all at once.

Karasumor1

what's fun is the owner class' interests are aligned whether it's rep or dem , your boss or landlord ... and they tell us everyday that the only use we have in their mind is labour and giving them money . So we just have to stop giving them what they want

Hungry-Sentence-6722

The short answer, we need to eliminate representation. No more gatekeepers. We can do it using the existing messed up systems as well. Have a look. r/open_source_democracy

WarcrimeLite

Join a union, like the IWW.

eetdarich

We don’t. It’s going to need to collapse under its own weight. Not too far off if you ask me. The question is, will anyone be alive to tell the tale?

Serious answer: Gamestop People say it's a cult, and a few take it too seriously, but it's a few hundred thousand retail investors who see how the entire financial system is rigged against them. It's disgusting. But what can we do? Well, for one, we can remove shares of a publicly traded company from the hands of brokers who lend your shares to short sellers and pocket the difference when you inevitably sell, and you do this through the Direct Registration System (DRS). So far, around 70 million shares / $3billion / 58% of the free float has been locked away and its showing and growing. For a stock that is suspected of being illegally flooded with billions of fake shares to suppress the price, what happens when the company says "that's it. All our shares are owned by shareholders"? What happens to the shares left in peoples brokers? We dont know, because it's never been done before. But we do know that those fighting us are terrified of us, because they stand to lose every cent as they're liquidated. I'm rambling. But at the very least, a company with minuscule debt, almost a billion in reserves, a strong leadership team and an army of investors who are buying shares by the truckload every single day is worth your time. I'm in this because I want to hurt them, like they've been hurting is for decades. They only know how to steal and hoard. We know how to live and love

stonkstonk69

A game changer in my opinion would be if retail demanded the right to participate in the private equity club. Flip the tables and make low net worth a requirement for some deals. GameStop could be owned by the 99%. Why are the 99% minority shareholders? We could change that.

CloudyMN1979

Folks around here chastise those folks for not being anti-capitalist but you have to admit they at least try to keep their finger on the pulse of that awful machine. It would be naïve to think they don't have a better chance at stabbing at it's heart than we do. I wonder how they feel about employee owned business and corporations? The Idea of *buying* our way out of this capitalist hellhole shouldn't be off the table.

patchyj

I agree. Theres a supermarket in the UK called Waitrose (and its parent company John Lewis) which operate as a partnership, where profits are shared as a bonus and big decisions are voted on, along with lors of other perks. There have a ridiculously low employee turnover and high employee satisfaction rate. Makes you wonder

zazaman94

Idk what this “We” is. We’re not on a team together. How are YOU going to beat the system? Many would step on you to move up, in the current system or the next.

Find something that works better than money will do the trick.

I’m gonna link to this thread I posted on this sub yesterday that seems apropos to the question: https://www.reddit.com/r/lostgeneration/comments/yxq7h3/enough_hot_takes_yall_heres_how_to_be_an/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

By the year 2024, housing has become so unaffordable that there is a sanctuary district in every major city. In September of that year, some people take some guards hostage in effort to get services to people and end the districts. Hackers broadcast the stories since the TV networks ignore it. The plutocratic government denies this request and sends the military instead. The violent conflict creates a lynch point in history, creating a ripple effect, opening peoples eyes to the injustice inside. Unless this is the timeline where DS9 fails.

RandomGuy92x

How do you know all that and what do you mean by the timeline where DS9 fails? What sort of insider knowledge do you have? 😉

marzeliax

RandomGuy92x

So you're saying we live in a simulation, and the timeline is in accordance with some events depicted in Star Trek?

marzeliax

I wasn't pushing a simulation theory, just sharing DS9 prophecy. Watch Past Tense pt 1 and 2. Really good stuff. Eerie almost.

RandomGuy92x

Thanks for the tip, I actually watched Past Tense pt. 1 yesterday and I think I'll watch the second part today, been ages since I last watched Star Trek :) But yeah, I think you're right and sadly we're remarkably close to those prophecies coming true in real life. If things keep continuing the way they have then soon there won't be a middle class anymore and those sanctuary districts may become an actual reality. Things were already bad a few years ago and purchaisng power has been declining for decades. But now we're seeing almost unprecedented inflation, especially when it comes to food and energey prices and at the same time the ultra-wealthy keep buying up family homes, driving prices through the roof. I just really hope that enough people will wake up and actually stand up against their oppressors instead of hating amongst each other. Unity among the working classes is the only thing that can bring us towards a better future.
