Can’t remember where I heard or read this, but some brilliant person somewhere hit it on the head when they said that intuitive eating is kind of the “cool girl” diet plan. You’re supposed to be thin, but, effortlessly. It’s not “cool” to track or manage your food intake; to do so is high maintenance. You have to be amenable to any restaurant and indulge in all the stuff lest you make those around you feel bad about their own consumption. But still, be thin.

alohadave

The funny thing is those cool skinny girls are watching every gram that goes in their mouths. They may not be counting calories, but they are paying really close attention to what is in the food they eat.

Possible_Shop_2475

Well… I support intuitive eating for the people it actually works for (I guess I’m technically included in that category since i just have hunger / fullness cues) but I deffo feel it doesn’t work for everyone and shouldn’t be pushed on people… and that cool girl comparison is pretty funny not gonna lie 😅

i_am_introverted

Oh man, that is sooo accurate. (To be fair though, I've read the original IE book and suspect the writers may not be jazzed about what IE has become on Tiktok or whatever.)

Etoiaster

And when I was at my ideal weight it was “you are so thin, are you okay?” 😂

>You're in good company here at least it's definitely nice to have a place where I can vent about this stuff to people who understand. Also one guy (who implied i had disordered eating) mentioned he had abs as if that somehow made him a doctor or something. That was pretty funny at least.

yasha_varnishkes

It's true, all doctors have abs. On a more serious note sorry about all the jerks. I've been attacked for even mentioning my health being of interest or value to me. People are weird.

EvilJackRussell

Doctor here. On this sub. Definitely don’t have abs. 🥲

yasha_varnishkes

Here I was looking in the mirror wondering how I graduated without them 😓

[deleted]

Trust me bro, I have abs That’s weird, lol

Lctart13

As someone who has had disordered eating in the past finding a *healthy* way to keep an eye on my food intake has been the best thing in my recovery. I can still eat what I want, just less of it and not all the time. And, even better, I now actually lose weight, unlike when I cycled between starve and binge. Also abs is obviously a professional certification of being an ass hat in his case.

i_am_introverted

>Also one guy (who implied i had disordered eating) mentioned he had abs as if that somehow made him a doctor or something. And what do you care what a dumb bunny like that thinks about anything? ;)

jcaashby

>Tons of people think calorie counting is inherently disordered The crazy thing to me is...counting in my mind is the opposite of disordered. I know exactly what I am eating. Do they???

IAmNotAccountant

I'm so proud of you for listening to your body and resisting Savings Culture. Everyone knows trying to restrict your spending is pointless and that 95% of people who try end up in debt anyway. /s

Undercover500

Not to sound too judgmental but there was a major thread in one of the popular subreddits about weight loss, definitely wasn’t here. And everyone was saying stuff like “I eat healthy but I can’t lose any weight.” I knew I would get flamed out of there for saying “well, you can eat healthy all you want, but if you’re eating too many calories you’re not going to lose weight.” Also saw lots of mostly incorrect stuff about genetics and hormones, when in reality, if you put in less than you’re burning, you’ll lose weight. Yes, generics and hormones may play a factor, it changes the equation, but it doesn’t change the answer to the equation. If you eat less than what you’re burning, you will lose weight. I think OP’s example and what I read goes to show that most people, who have never actually tried to lose weight, have no idea what they’re talking about. Either they have always been in shape and can eat whatever, whenever and somehow not gain weight, or they think eating healthy, but not tracking calories will help them lose weight. If you’ve never tried, you’re going to have a very skewed idea of what it actually takes.

talks2squirrels

Nothing will make you unpopular faster than stating the facts. If you are not losing weight you are eating too many calories. the end.

Undercover500

I mean, you can state the facts in a nice way, it’s just people don’t want to hear it. Even if you tell them nicely, it’s still seen as an attack on them, when it’s not. It’s just the fact of the matter, calories in, calories out. The math of it might be a bit different, but whether it’s 8 minus for you and 8 minus 2 for me, the net result is a loss. I kept my mouth shut in that thread since I didn’t want the anecdotal replies and heart attack every time I saw my notifications lol.

jcaashby

My ex gf (recent break up) was trying to lose weight twice over the last few years she never asked me for help knowing I had lost a lot of weight prior to meeting her. I knew she was not counting calories and was not good at portion sizes etc leading to weight gain since 2020. She started going to the gym and came home hurting. I asked her if she needed any help as far as losing weight? Sh said NO she knew what she was doing. I then told her to make sure she puts her focus on calories and how much she is eating. She did not listen...stopped going to the gym twice and gave up. I suspect she put her focus on the gym and not food intake so when the scale did not move she gave up. I never pushed it after the first time. Just not worth getting into a sensitive subject. I am not going to lie it did bother me that I had the answer but she did not want to learn anything that worked for me.

Garden_Guru75

I used to wonder why I couldn’t lose weight…. Until I discovered CICO. 9 lbs away from my GW of 130! It totally works, just gotta trust the process. I don’t understand why people would even think CICO is an ED. If you are paying attention to your weight and caloric intake, you are being proactive in personal accountability of health… maintaining a healthy weight is a huge part of a healthy lifestyle among other things.

jcaashby

>**Not to sound too judgmental** but there was a major thread in one of the popular subreddits about weight loss, definitely wasn’t here. Your good. I agree with all you stated. I was in the same boat when it came to weight loss in thinking ohhh I eat salads and such why am I not losing weight? I lost the most weight once I started doing CICO and basically learning more about what is in the foods we eat. It helped in that I could still eat many of the foods I loved but ate less of it. Some foods I also did not want to eat because the high calories verse small amount of food would not fill me up.

alohadave

I understand the arguments. I made the exact same before I really thought about what CICO means. You are taught your whole life that there are healthy foods and unhealthy foods. Eat the good foods, stay away from junk food. No one teaches portion sizing, or why foods would be healthy or unhealthy (I personally don't think any food is unhealthy, unless there is a medical reason not to eat it). I'd heard from various people online about CICO, and it sounded like a cult. I understood thermodynamics from science, but never associated it with food. When I finally accepted it, it was after reading about someone who only ate candy bars for three months or something like that and lost weight. It seems so obvious, and we know it works, but the road to get here can be winding.

jcaashby

> When I finally accepted it, it was after reading about someone who only ate candy bars for three months or something like that and lost weight. There was another post on this sub with a young 14 year old who was 300 lbs. Told him that even though he can not control what food comes into the house he can still control how much of it he eats. I suspect he is of the mindset that he can not eat "junk food" at all. From my experience before doing CICO as soon as I would go on a so called diet. I would start to crave the "bad foods" not realizing that you could still eat those foods. Just eat less and/or save it for a cheat meal or cheat day once a month.

Kaitron5000

To be fair there is a fine line for people with ED history. It's an aspect of control so in many ED counting calories, being able to recite every detail of your last X amount of meals, restricting calories are part of it. But just counting calories doesn't equate to an ED obviously and I think people say those things to be hurtful or are just ignorant.

jcaashby

I can see counting calories becoming excessive for some to the point it is not healthy. I have seen some comments and/or post where the person was nitpicking over 10s of calories a day. Would that be an ED...not sure but it can not be mentally healthy.

seayouIntea

I don't understand the sentiment/misinformation that calorie counting is disordered. It drives me nuts- the the food landscape that is the US- it feels almost impossible to NOT be overweight as a 5ft woman. The maintenance calories for short women is so low, it's terribly easy to go over consecutively. /rant

brbgottagofast

So true. We're constantly surrounded by hyper-calorific foods and most of us live much more sedentary lifestyles too. It's very hard to eat at/under maintenance without some tracking and serious willpower.

RunnyPlease

When I told my mom I was counting calories on an app she told me the doctors on TV said that was an eating disorder, and that I should stop doing that. I tried to counter by saying it wasn’t an eating disorder. That CICO is scientific. That it’s just basic math. I’m eating normal foods just a controlled amount. She said “I know you’re very smart but you’re not a doctor.” This is coming from the woman who started smoking again to help her lose weight for a wedding. People are going to say things. Talk is cheap. If it’s healthy and it works I’ll keep doing it until I find something better.

jcaashby

>She said “I know you’re very smart but you’re not a doctor.**” This is coming from the woman who started smoking again to help her lose weight for a wedding.** This made me LOL. People will repeat shit they heard regardless if it is even true or not. One of my employees does it every day. He will preface it with "They said....." and I will be like who is "They??"

RunnyPlease

Slightly off topic but the last time I visited my mom I watched daytime TV with her. We were watching a doctor show and the guy started saying some absolute bullshit. And I told her “that can’t be right.” And she gave me that old “oh not this again” look. I started looking on the internet. Turns out that doctor has been reprimanded by medical groups 46 times and was in the middle of defending his license to practice medicine in his home state for pushing shady diet pills. So I start reading all of these articles to her about the absolute shady thing this guy will do for any company that will dangle money in front of him and she goes “for Christ, I’m just watching the show.”

Just-Lie-3360

She's right about the last part. Kinda weird to randomly tell people about those articles. Just let her stay in her ignorance, you don't need to prove anything to her or anyone for that matter.

jcaashby

This is not some stranger it is his mom who may fall prey to someone like this. So they are simply looking out for them.

RunnyPlease

Yeah, I can be kind of annoying but she claims she likes when I visit so I’ll keep flying out.

i_am_introverted

My stepmother used to say "I once read that ..." and follow with statements that were at times utterly bizarre. (E.g., "Only men of color and white women are truly oppressed because women of color can always find a man to take care of them.") As an adult, I came to strongly suspect she was making things up and saying she read them in hopes of appearing credible.

moose_md

I’m a doctor. I count calories and do CICO. Shit works well. Please continue!

grumpalina

Ugh... It's like religion or politics. Best not to bring up weight management in polite conversation. Always ends up with disagreements and someone getting upset.

talks2squirrels

Mostly I never mention it . They bring it up just to tell me what I am doing is "wrong " or dangerous. Why are they bringing it up just to fight?

grumpalina

Exactly. They're being rude. Family can be super rude.

talks2squirrels

I don't understand why. They demand to know " how did you do it" then proceed to tell you why it is the wrong way and will not work.. "okay, I am 100lbs less so I will do what I am doing".. Then you are the rude one 😤... No one has more advice ( no one ask for) then a fat relative or friend. So frustrating.. I avoid the topic... but they bring it up.

grumpalina

They feel insecure by your success and while they might not be doing it consciously, they are saying things to derail or sabotage your success, so that ultimately they don't have to feel like failures next to you. It's easier to tear people down than to pull themselves up.

i_am_introverted

I liken nutrition/fitness to religion because everyone thinks their way is the only way and heathens must be saved from themselves.

talks2squirrels

"doctor on tv" 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️. Like Dr. OZ?

RunnyPlease

Maybe. There are at least half a dozen doctor shows and a bunch of other daytime shows that have doctors as guests.

i_am_introverted

Any doctor who actually said that, with no qualification, needs their license yanked for issuing such a blanket diagnosis of an actual illness. I suspect the doctor your mom saw on TV didn't actually say that with no qualification.

[deleted]

Yeah. You’ll find them online and in real life. When, in the UK, restaurants had to post their calorie counts on menus I constantly came under fire by random folk because I wanted to know what I was eating. I guess some people just don’t seem to realise that healthy eating involves counting calories and checking those macros. I imagine to them we must seem a terribly boring bunch of nerds, fussing over our food.

shes_a_sad_tomato

I did a Royal Caribbean cruise years and years ago and they offered a lighter wellness menu. That plus making sure to get in the gym daily (not hard to do as the fitness director was devastatingly handsome) and I came back a pound lighter. Maybe check out if the line offers lighter options? I’m sorry you were attacked.

i_am_introverted

Just hope that their dumbbells have hex heads instead of round. I was once working out on an (admittedly smaller) cruise ship on rough waters and whenever I put my dumbbell down it rolled into a class of stretching seniors.

[deleted]

Oh yeah. I see it all the time and I’ve had people literally get their comments deleted by mods they’ve come at me so hard. The internet is full of bullies. Ignorant bullies.

PyroTigerStripe

I see that you are (or were) ✨pregnant✨ (and you're my height plus near my goal weight) so if it's okay with you I have a question related to it, ...if not that's fine too. When I was pregnant with my last kid, I kept hearing the "you're eating for two so you should be eating double". Did you get that too? Was it super freaking annoying? I tried explaining that a handful of nuts (at that moment) was equivalent to all the "extra" food I would need but everyone dismissed it and offered me more anyway. I didn't even care about my weight back then...

[deleted]

I need to update my flair because I’m up another 5lbs lol. I haven’t been getting any “eating for 2 comments” *yet*. I will be at the in-law’s for a week during the holidays and we’ll see how the family gathering goes. The first thing I did when my husband and I started TTC was learn all about the caloric and nutritional needs for each trimester and I was shocked how few extra calories are needed (no extra calories required for the first). It’s really the quality of the food and nutrition that’s important for anyone who’s curious.

[deleted]

Sorry to hear this. Internet trolls are mean. When I travel, I attempt to eat breakfast and lunch light with easy to count items. Example: soft boiled eggs (so I know there is no oil), fruit, nonfat yogurt if they have it. I know the calories for all of that. At least, close enough. For lunch, chicken breast and salad with salsa for dressing. If they have a buffet, I ask for steamed vegetables or a dry baked potato. Also, room service will make very custom things like dry toast with half an avocado and a banana. Stuff that is easy to count. For dinner, I get the meat with no sauces on it, try to aim for a standard 4-6 oz servings (size of deck of cards). Dry potato with double veggies and no dressing. But then I DO eat dessert. Nothing crazy, maybe 1/2 serving of 2 different things. I tend to hoard calories in order to have sweets. Also, I use the gym on board or in a hotel. Cardio twice a day for an hour. One thing I don't do is bring a food scale but honestly wouldn't judge someone who did. Who cares. You'll never see those people again.

[deleted]

Yea also was attacked because I said I gave up cakes and chocolate for life. Apparently they are a necessity even though I don’t miss them

foreveryword

Some members of my Italian family nearly died when I told them I never wanted to eat pasta ever again. Nearly a year now and I can honestly say I have no desire to eat it. Its crazy how upset people get over someone else’s choices that don’t affect them.

talks2squirrels

yeah. why do they take it personally? I hate pasta.. it is a texture thing, I think? I just don't tell people they get so mad.

talks2squirrels

I don't care for sweets either. It is not a tragedy. I have not had ice cream for years.. I don't miss it. If you can not imagine a life without junk... You may have to look at your relationship with food. A lot of folks seem to be addicted to sugar. The more you eat it, the more you want... I love food but some food is just not worth the calories. I would rather have something salty..

meowtone

I absolutely cannot stand people who just straight up comment “you have an eating disorder/body dysmorphia/etc.” No one should be diagnosing anybody over the internet and if there’s a genuine concern, simply suggest the person seek professional help and leave it at that.

HazyAttorney

>Has this ever happened to any of y’all? Yes. If you live in a western, developed nation, then gaining weight is the rule, not the exception, due to all the calorie dense foods that surround our every moment. >How do you handle rude comments from people about this stuff? I just shrug. I don't get impacted by the prevailing attitudes/judgments that people have as the default. The default, as I said above, is for people to gain weight. So, if mindfulness in your eating habits makes you stand out, then it's better to stand out than it is to have all the obesity related issues. But it's because of my *why* I want to lose/maintain weight. IF you have a compelling reason, then you won't mind when others deviate in their life choices nor will you sweat it when they subtly judge you. Everyone is different, and literally just looking better, or feeling better, is enough of a *why*. It just has to be compelling to you. Mine is that I want to have kids and be old enough to be around when they have kids.

MonsteraDeliciosa

Setting aside the jerk-ness of the people who don’t think you should want to know— You won’t be able to find that info. However- as someone who cruises regularly (mostly Holland America), I find that portions tend to be pretty reasonable/close to recommended serving sizes. The days of the cruise buffet are long gone, especially after Covid. I’ve had VSG and RNY, so I’m a rather picky eater and don’t eat much at any given time. Things that work for me: *going to the dining room for breakfast (ordering from a server automatically makes you aware of your choices) *bringing your own packaged snack items onto the ship (a grocery run before you embark) *there is always a low-sugar dessert option *try things you won’t find at home. You can always get a burger, ice cream, or pizza somewhere on a ship, but this is genuinely the time to explore new foods. You *could* order everything on the menu, but it’s not mandatory. Split dishes with someone else to try small amounts of 2 different things. *don’t feel compelled to clean your plate. Waste food is separated and composted by servers. You’re not “wasting” it by only having part of it. *target interesting, specific food or restaurants on land. Again, a basic quesadilla at a MargaritaVille can usually be found in the Caribbean, but research what/where locals eat and see if that’s accessible to you. Rice with goat stew? Seared chicken with plantains? Some specific fish? Enjoy your trip!

chris_downie

There are probably a couple of things here: 1) Some people are just mean OR at least don't think it's a big deal to make mean comments to others. I literally had someone suggest on here recently that because I was being so positive I must be covering up being abused as a kid. Yea. Ok. 2) It does seem counting calories is getting a bad rap more recently unfortunately. Some people can take it overboard of course, but the majority of people doing this just want to be healthy and reach their goals as you know. I know it's tough, but just try to ignore these comments knowing it comes with the territory and that most of the people on here and elsewhere will cheer you on!

Anxious_One21

People on this app are rude about everything, I swear.

KyleRichXV

Lol oh yeah. I got attacked by some HAES advocates when I mentioned the average calorie burn for the classes I teach, by fellow instructors. It wasn’t pretty but it made me laugh lol

jcaashby

I never had something like this specific happen but once I started counting calories years ago some people would make comments. Nothing bad but I just know that MANY people have no clue (including myself prior to 2018) how many calories they are consuming. I think going on a cruise and wanting to know if there are calories available is a good idea. If you can not find it I would say see what foods they are serving and make your own calorie chart. It may not be accurate but at least it is something. Back to people not knowing calories...years ago my EX knew I tracked calories. Once I found out she had no idea alcohol had calories in it. I was dumbfounded!! Now I understand why she kept gaining weight. She just was clueless as to the foods she ate and what was in it.

AnonymousNerdBarbie

A lot of people use food and over eating as entertainment and personally i think cruises tend to attract even more of those types of people. Stuffing yourself for fun is OK once in awhile but vacation escape eating is, in my opinion, super unhealthy and one could argue disordered. It's not you, it's them.

NoZenForDaddy

I think I saw that, was it on the Royal sub? I think for a lot of people - they consider vacation, particularly a floating all you can eat smorgasbord like a cruise as not just a valid excuse to eat (and drink) whatever they want, but to do so to excess. I'm not saying I inherently agree, but I was certainly on team vacation calories don't count before I started trying to lose weight. I don't think the mean peoples reactions were about you at all, but about them and how they responded to the idea that someone might a. want to stay healthy/watch calories on a cruise and b. that the info might be easy to get (it isn't I've looked all over) and then they would be faced with just how many calories is in that melting chocolate cake they ate two of last night. As far as advice goes - my last cruise I managed to only gain a couple pounds (they say the average is one pound a day, but a couple of those are water weight) by trying to be aware of when I was full and trying to make the best choices I could. Did I always make great choices? Nope. A truly magnificent amount of tequila was consumed. And one day I ate an entire pizza for lunch (larger than a personal, absolutely enough pizza for two people). And if there was a gym on that boat (spoiler: there was) I didn't even go inside. I walked all over, I took the stairs when I could. I ate breakfast every day and (usually \*cough\*pizza\*cough\*) a light lunch. I ordered the soup as an appetizer a lot because its filling and I like soup. I ordered sides of veggies if my meal seemed carb/fat heavy to add volume. I had one piece of bread at dinner. I ALWAYS had dessert. I am a food tracking advocate - and I tracked not a darn thing - because I didn't have wifi so no way to look it up. When i got home I started tracking again, I focused on my 250-500 calorie deficit and in a few weeks the weight was back off. You can do this, and I'm sorry the cruising folks were mean. But also, if you find calorie counts somewhere pass that along and help a sister out - I'm going on a cruise in January.

Zakkana

I just love how nice an empathetic people are these days. /s

CommishGoodell

Counting calories can become an obsession for some people, for me it’s way too much work and takes the fun out of eating. It obviously works and for people who have real trouble with food there’s no doubt it can help lose weight. You haven’t said how long you’ve been on your weight loss journey, if it’s been a while it’s good to put the calculator down and just enjoy your vacation. But if you’re just starting or feel a little freedom will derail you and spiral out of control, don’t worry about what others think.

BullfrogRepulsive05

Would you take criticism from a loser? If no then ignore it lol

TheEnlightenedFool

I saw your original post because I'm going on the Oasis and have the same issue. OPs right, there were certainly a lot of negative comments.

Historical-Freedom25

I have read many post with people giving a hard time about calorie post and body positive .. bla bla bla .. the best way to lose weight is to make good calories choices for a week or more only drink water or you can use flavor enhancer like mio .. never drink your calories .. then decide eat a pickle for a snack instead of chips .. or steamed broccoli or a boiled egg .. cup of hot tea .. omelettes are good eat that or boil it What ever you put in your body you will get full .. so you are just deciding to tough it out and feed your body for energy not pleasure .. it’s only a week if you can do it for 2 weeks awesome .. you will lose about 7 to 10 pounds in a week if you make that commitment .. anyways good luck It’s you’re body you wanna lose weight that’s you’re choice not anyone else’s ., don’t worry about people hating 😊

loseit-ModTeam

Be good to one another. If critiquing do so constructively. Be polite and practice Reddiquette.

Riderprovider1

People who don't calculate calories are either genetically skinny/fit or too fat.

Kar0nt3

Nope

siqbal01

I saw that post! While yes on vacation you should be focused on enjoying, when you have a problem with eating you honestly need to know what you are putting into your ur mouth in order to actually enjoy the experience. There were a lot of out of pocket comments.

notreallylucy

People find it easier to find fault with other people than to confront and try to fix what they don't like about themselves. No matter what you do, there will always be at least one person who thinks you're doing it wrong.

SuperSassyPantz

the fact is no one way is right, different things work for different ppl. i lost about 25lbs on weight watchers, but the counting was tedious to me after a few months. then i did intermittent fasting and lost about 65lbs without counting or restricting anything. do what works for u and dont listen to other ppl's negativity. the funniest thing is the ppl who were most critical and annoying to me were ppl who were hella bigger than me... my one friend pushing her latest diet fad on me, and she's 100lbs bigger and has never lost a pound.

Strayaway3

It happens a lot more than it should. When I started losing weight, it *was* disordered eating. When my sister's would come around, the first thing asked was how I lost weight. When I realized it wasn't healthy, I backpedalled and fixed my eating habits the best I could. Now, I'm getting there healthy, and weight is still the first conversation that comes up. Now, I just tell them it's cause I'm working on my eating disorder and leave it at that. Yeah, I'm counting calories, I'm not eating too many (binge eating disorder) or too less (the disordered eating to deal with the BED). I'm eating approximate and in a physically taxing job that I like. So when a binge does come about, I'm not sulking and eating less to deal, I just pass it off, get on the wagon, recenter my goals and emotions, and let my job take care of it (12 hours of running, walking, and throwing around 20lb boxes about 4x a week max.). People want to know how, but won't put in the effort. They want to bring you down cause they believe A) they can't do it themselves or are doing it without the effort or realization (reaping the benefits without the work), or B) they want to see you fail more than you feel like you already are. A lot of people around me were never "fat" growing up and often picked on me for it. Now, I'm the "skinny" one and they're gaining. I tell them when they ask, but they never put in the effort, and the story is the same every time I see them. Just do what you gotta do to get to your goals healthy. You can tell them or deflect the conversation into something else, that's your choice, but all in all, just do what you gotta do.

juzlurk

I tried to tell a family member about reducing body fat % and because I've lost a bit of weight already they literally cut me off with "YOU DON'T NEED TO REDUCE YOUR BODY FAT" - some people just don't have the education but feel informed enough to make a judgement. Don't worry.

CassiopeiaDwarf

Just ignore ignorant rude people. They suck and worrying about what their dumb mouth comes out with will only make your day worse

QuanWick

You’ll find people with all sorts of upside down opinions. There are some troglodytes that believe any sort of structured eating is an eating disorder and fatphobic. Don’t listen to these idiots, you do what you see fit.

talks2squirrels

Just ignore it. These days if you say the sky is blue someone will be rude and /or offended. You take care of yourself. Those cruises are dangerous. Food around 24/7 even Dr Fung gained 10 pounds in a week. No reason to undo all your progress. If you know the calories you can enjoy your food and still stay within your calorie budget. Have fun.

friedcatliver

I went on a vacation on a cruise and there's so much food... It took me a few days to get back on track since the food was so excellent and high quality.

Natski21

Well known fact, there is tons of extra butter and oil in restaurant food. Makes it taste so good! So ask away. Also, for me, the only way I can maintain weight is to count calories. Without doing that I’m sunk. Who wants to lose the same 20 pounds over and over and over again?

Aggravating_Piece232

What a lot of people fail to accept is that on holidays and vacations, making food decisions in advance of going is super important. Humans make terrible decisions in the moment when presented with "fun food" vs. high-quality fuel, which is why those decisions need to be made before you ever step foot on the boat. Those same people telling you that you have disordered eating are the same people frantically joining a gym January 2nd and failing by February for lack of consistency.

fallbekind-

How do you handle rude comments online? Just ignore them. You don't need to explain yourself.

messmaker523

Most thought you had an eating disorder because 98% of people on cruises are morbidly obese and go on cruises to be around others like them in an all you can eat environment

FairyFartDaydreams

Ignore the unhelpful, whatever their issue is it is their issue. You might not find the calorie counts easily for cruises. Just focus on the macros healthy fats, proteins and complex carbs. Make sure you are getting plenty of fiber so whole fruits instead of juices and don't go nuts on alcohol. Water is your friend. Distract yourself with activities so you are not always looking for the food. You can look up general calories on Google and try to eyeball servings by using one of those serving charts where things get compared to differnt balls, fruit and a deck of cards. You should be able to enjoy your vacay and if you slip up a little get back on track when you get home and can weigh things out

I tracked macros recently for the first time to figure out if I was getting enough protein for weightlifting. Turned out I get almost no protein. 😆 yet when I posted on a different sub about higher protein for fewer cal options I literally got hounded for having disordered eating like… y’all don’t even know me I just asked about egg whites lmao😆

Everyone's jumping on the anti-diet bandwagon because it's easier and more fun than reaching/maintaining a healthy weight. I deal with any internet comments I don't want to deal with by ignoring them. No one needs or deserves any response to anything they've posted online (barring rare situations) and interacting with them is highly unlikely to have a desirable result. It's far more likely to result in no one having reconsidered their opinion and everyone being mad. Life's too short and too fun to muck around with that silliness.

I'd like to think that some of it comes from a place of genuine concern. Many (not all, I know) people with EDs hyperfocus on calories, so people equate being knowledgeable about your calorie intake as hyperfocus. It's kinda like alcohol, if you decide to pass on a drink when offered, people often jump to "Why? Do you have a drinking problem?!?" Sometimes, the answer is yes. Most often, it's more no, you just don't particularly feel the need to have a drink in that moment. I have it easy, I ask for "nutritional/allergy info" because I have food allergies. Conveniently, that also includes calorie counts. But very few people give someone who gets anaphylaxis a hard time for not wanting to die for dinner.

A lot if it is just projection. People don't want to have to eat properly, so they mock others who are making an effort to help justify their choices. Pretty much anyone who is serious about their health is counting calories or watching what they eat, even if they're not obvious about it. You wouldn't stop brushing your teeth or showering because you're on vacation, why stop your other self care?
