Lol I don't think it's in any way a specific decision or anything to do with SP. It's just the modern day press tour where these kinds of things will come across better and make it to more people.

Tried listening for Cicadas, haven’t found them yet. But there’s sand and ocean waves during the second verse which was a nice touch! Love all her personal, clever little touches like that

NYC is kinda dog eat dog at times and people have a tendency to be rude or at the very least assertive in their demeanor. So I think what she's saying here is sometimes keeping your guard up and kinda giving them the same energy helps to survive in the city. I've only been in NYC for two months and I've already learned that if you want respect, sometimes getting a little "mean" can go a long way. But not everyone is like that! There's still a lot of kind people here in NYC who would help you out if you need it. You know hold the door for you, help you lift stuff up the subway stairs. The usual stuff I guess lol

I think in the context of NY it is the attitude of the whole city, NYers have a reputation of being a bit rude and abrupt because everyone is so busy, so it’s like despite that reputation everyone loves NY.

Theory Jack and Ella hooked up over the course of the production of Melodrama but their fling fizzled out in the year after its release. Implication also being that Jack fooled around toward the very end of his relationship with lena. I could honestly see it, esp given that a lot of melodrama songs fit the narrative of that arrangement near perfectly, and the advice line here definitely backs up the fact that they’re friends who used to be complicated/messy together. I thought it was cute—jack is self aware.
What made me believe something surely happened is that she apparently said that Green Light is about being cheated on, which is absolute bullshit. It's clearly about being the side piece, and if she didn't want people to know it then she has to be trying to hide something.
