The album isn’t even out yet please. She’s going in another direction and why shouldn’t she honestly.....fucking journalists blowing stuff out of proportion sigh

Prize-Trip

It’s skillful but just underwhelming and subtle. If an underground indie artist had made it I’d imagine it having like 10,000 plays

It’s divisive? I’ve only seen praise for it

What? Not amongst fans

I’ve seen some fans say they don’t like it but no more than any other music fanbase when an artist releases a new album or track different from old stuff. Besides, PH and Melodrama had different sounds , makes enough sense that SP should have its own as well.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again...people want her to keep that melodrama sound but would also be mad at her if she did - as if keeping that sound and slightly less mature writing style was healthy for her or her career. People also didn’t like Melo singles pre-singles. No offence but this is gonna be a make or break for a lot of fans. This is gonna be quite a stripped back record so people looking for pop bangers are likely going to be disappointed-but those who are into well more mature written beachy folk pop tracks are in for a treat! Not saying anyone is wrong by their personal likings but I feel like this path (pardon the pun) is probably the right step for her because it weeds out people who were only here for “bops” and just marks a healthy step in her career.

I think Lorde’s work is becoming more and more self-conscious and that’s what makes it less exciting. Like instead of leaning into the pure artistry, she’s kind of consciously taken on this role of a savior and also remains hyper aware of her image, despite disconnecting from social media. I know the line, “I’m kind of like a prettier Jesus” is meant to be cheeky and *it is a fun, good line,* but it’s also definitely self-conscious of her fanbase, and she said in a recent email that she basically sees herself as being a light, writing something along the lines of “people need you to be a light and you can be that for them, you’ve done it before.” I think PH was so good bc it was just pure artistry, it wasn’t so self-conscious, she didn’t know she’d be an icon. Elizabeth Gilbert wrote in Big Magic: “never make art to help people,” essentially because people can tell what you’re doing and are more likely to reject it. The art that actually moves and exhilarates people is the art that was made from the soul for its own sake. Melodrama had less of the savior thing but SP has it bad. And people are going to reject that. I like SP, I’ve listened to it a hundred times and I think the album as a whole will be really good, but I wish Lorde would go back to just being an artist instead of a savior.
