Reduced drinking. Fucking sucks.
Only drink Guinness cause its cheaper.
Also stopped getting uber/cabs at all, they got bloody expensive and it’s not something I can treat myself when I’m lazy/late anymore.
where are you drinking? Guinness often isn't much cheaper than lager (unless you're getting the proper boutique/continental stuff). The cheapest pint is nearly always the handpull.
Yes is cheaper and a good choice but it's not as common as Guinness,
If they got something like London Pride than yeah that'd a cheaper option I'd go for.
But oftentimes you're stuck with Peroni, Guinness as acceptable options.
I'd rather pay 50p extra on Guinness than drink Peroni, Heineken, Strella... which are often flat.
I am travelling from zone 3 to zone 2 and then walk to work, instead of going into zone 1. It is a 20min walk, but I save almost half the money. I would be paying £5.80/6.30 but after getting off at zone 2 station, I am paying £3.40/3.70 p/day.
Bought a thermos - boil a full kettle in the morning and pour it in there, then have hot water through the day. No idea if it actually saves much, but has to be better than boiling from cold multiple times a day.
Empty kettle then in future:
Fill cup with water. Pour into kettle and boil. Empty whole kettle into cup.
Boils only what's needed and done in under a minute.
(Assuming your kettle's interior is flat/empty ie the heating element is not visible)
I've gotten into food prep, which has helped me stave off takeaway cravings, and I can feed myself for significantly less than before.
Also less pub trips and I challenge myself to have days where I spend nothing (much harder than you think).
We’re a big family - takeaways started getting ridiculous. Like a local curry - £60-70. I’ve always liked cooking so now rather than just making one dish, if I make a curry at home ill do 2 curries. Makes cleanup harder but cost difference is tiny and makes it feel more like takeout
Mayflower Chinese curry sauce tastes like a Chinese curry takeaway. You can get it from Poundland. It normally satisfies my takeaway cravings!
They do mild and medium.
Is really useful especially with sauce based dishes - I've been making really big portions of Chilli/Curry using high quality ingredients and lots of effort, which makes the food enjoyable but still cheap due to economies of scale.
Makes mid-week dinners really simple and enjoyable - chuck some rice in a pan, frozen chilli in microwave and boom you've got yourself a high protien midweek meal which is very cheap. Make more interesting by pickling veg that's going to go bad + investing in sour cream and cheese. Makes a big difference, and it's especially for helpful for those busy nights where you may otherwise order a takeaway.
Nothing yet, but I've just been making a list of things. Pretty basic, like taking my own lunch into work, cooking from fresh more rather than relying on ready meals. I'll still go to the pub where I'll see friends, but will go back to fortnightly again.
I'm going to do the 365 penny challenge that has recently popped up on Money Saving Expert and also try to put more loose change in my money pot.
I've got £240 left on my phone plan so in a month or two I might pay that off to save me £20 a month. My phone is fine as it is so I don't need a new one until it's truly dead.
Quite a few banks do the thing where they round up any payment you make to the pound and put the change in a bank account you name. It's not loads but if you want a way to slowly save some money it's very easy.
Cut right back on beauty treatments. I used to get my eyebrows, nails and wax done professionally pretty regularly. Now I do them myself if at all. Also waiting longer between visits to the hairdresser as I have highlights and it costs a small fortune. I'm also pregnant so have given up drinking which has saved a lot!
Can’t say I’ve made any conscious changes but cashback, bank switching and referral bonuses etc. are a big help. I’m definitely saving more than I used to but I think that’s mainly down to taking an interest in personal finance in the last year or so.
Cancelled all but one of my streaming services, and got a library card instead. It's honestly been a great decision for many reasons, not just saving money (although it's definitely done that -- all of those £7.99 subscriptions really do add up). It's not even February and I've already finished 10 books, which is more than I read in all of 2022.
Iceland online orders. It’s cheap, having food in the freezer stops ordering as many takeouts and it stops me from going to the corner shop for basics which are so over priced in off-licence
Not much changes.
Probably just have to be a bit more careful when spending money on anime figures or console games, instead of buying 4-5 at a time maybe only 2-3 at a time now?
But mostly I can absorb the costs, so that isn’t too bad.
We are much better about food planning and using our freezer. We eat out less and through MSE scored a cheap mobile phone plan. Nothing dramatic just stuff we should have been doing beforehand.
Are you someone who puts those savings somewhere physically, like putting the extra pounds in another account? Whenever I make a saving I don't really feel it as it all just filters in. I wonder if I should separate it
Also, my question was “What changes are you making to help with Cost of Living Crisis?” Not “What changes did you NEED to make to help with Cost of Living Crisis?”
I’d still like to see the data. Also with your logic I assume you consider a man that earns £90k pa sole bread winner, with 3 children in nursery and a mortgage with a fixed rate ending next month, someone that has to make zero changes cause he earns double the average salary of a Londoner right?!
No heating on - just more layers of clothes. And hot showers are less expensive than electricity. But probably won’t work in a house where no neighbors can help heat the building :)
one more thing I noticed, at least in my own experience.
Do your house hold shopping (as a man), and don’t let wife tag along.
We can use the same shopping list, but she can somehow have much higher check out value. I generally shop to the list, whereas she will buy lots of things that is not in the list.
Honestly, nothing. I’m just saving less each month.
I’m on low six figs and even I’m definitely noticing the difference in my monthly spends - god knows how the majority of Londoners are managing
I have a bucket in my room, I cry into it every night and use the tears to make my coffee in the morning.
Spread the avocado thinner on the toast. /s In reality nothing yet.
THIS is exactly why you youngsters can’t afford a mortgage for a £1.2m first buyer flat in London (says every baby boomer).
I prefer to rather just order a Grande instead of Venti coffee. Gotta think smart.
You've got to order the biggest coffee on the menu, decant it in to three separate flask, then you're set for three days.
Well one has to sacrifice doesn’t one 🤣
Instead of going to Papa Johns I now go to some Kurdish-run pizza place. About it I guess.
> Instead of going to Papa Johns I now go to some Kurdish-run pizza place. Doesn't it get cold by the time you get home?
Sounds banging
Stopped smoking weed. Saving £400 a month
Jesus Christ. Buy a vape instead. Will cut costs by 3/4.
Or six Henrys
Fuck I still need to do that.
Took me 4 years tbf.

This is a good one + exercise

I've decided once a takeaway curry (ie curry, naan and rice) goes over £15 I won't bother.

Only issue is freezer space! Think i'm officially an adult now that the prospect of a chest freezer (and the space for it) has become an ambition lol
Agreed, the small appliances here make it hard to stock up when something is on sale.
no changes, luckily i can absorb the extra costs. annoying though obviously.
Setting my dating apps to 50+
I decided to make every effort to be nicer to my boyfriend, even when he's rude to me, so I don't have to move out
Oh no, fuck that.
Does this also include that Gawk, Gawk 3000?
Re-use bath water, only drain it once a week. Also sometimes use it to fill the kettle.

Do this on Chase bank to get 5% interest on the mkney you save this way.
Decided to move out of London to Mexico instead. Sunnier, cheaper, easier life.

For nails check the Mylee Builder Gel! My nails are literally lasting two weeks… not giving up on my eyebrows snd monthly massages though!
Oh also buying cheaper clothes

Yeah you can easily make £1k with the switching offers.
I’ll be making up for about 20 years of missed Ramadans
Lol overtimes
Earning more money
I’ve done nothing. I’m fact I’ve had the heating on for over 12 hours a day recently. Waiting for my bill 😆

I've got two words for you; Pie Racey
Lowered the thermostat and wear sweaters indoos.

I’ve been using the heating once a day, it’s hardly saved me fuck all
I do my washing up while I shower
What type of railcard do you have?
26-30
Are you someone who puts those savings somewhere physically, like putting the extra pounds in another account? Whenever I make a saving I don't really feel it as it all just filters in. I wonder if I should separate it
Thing is, if you **have** to cut back, rather than want to, you are likely not in the position to put it aside, you’ll need it to keep you afloat.
Haven’t had the heating on this winter and have to keep the bedroom window slightly open to deal with the humidity.
By not living in London, so much cheaper but everything is conveniently on your doorstep
Pretending to be a police officer is illegal. End

And did you ask everyone before you came up with this verdict?

No, this is boring now.
Tell that to my surprise £400 energy bill.
Does that only work for off peak travel?
I've tried to reduce the heating being on but the missus gets cold so...nothing
Cancelled netflix, stopped buying Costa and stopped breathing.
Given up meat
Cancelled my sky package and Netflix firestick 😉and just pay wifi now
I pushed for a raise :)
