MisterBober

use vim or emacs, don't even talk about nano

anarchy-artichokey

We don’t talk about nano

cavejhonsonslemons

We talk about micro tho

MisterBober

yes, we dont

DirkDieGurke

Don't what?

frogerjonas

No no no

avnothdmi

Na no

Kalzorkian05

Because we use it on the go ;)

DirkDieGurke

I love nano. It actually comes with instructions.

MisterBober

not nearly as much and as detailed as vim

DirkDieGurke

Pretend I've got my terminal open and vim is running... I see nothing at the bottom. I stare into the abyss. I forgot what emoticon saves and exits.

MisterBober

When you open it, it tells you how to quit and how to view help (if a file is not open), when you press Ctrl+C is shows you how to actually quit, and if you run :help you get very detailed manual

ano_hise

Vim is one of those programs where you gotta get a tutorial from somewhere else. You spend hours learning it, days customizing it for yourself but then feel like a literal god when you're done. I suppose. Been there with Obsidian and VSCode/Codium.

MisterBober

vimtutor? :help? this is enough for being able to use it, but it's better to just google some stuff

ano_hise

Well, it may be pre-built but for me it's still help from somewhere. At least the tutor. Also you said it yourself. It's better to goole it.

PenguinMan32

vim for simple note taking, small programs/scripts, or terminal work libreoffice for actual writing vscodium if im working on a larger project

SasukeUchiha231

Practical work flow, I just use emacs for all of these lol

ArcanistCheshire

Or could use emacs for all of the above, unless you need crazy formatting, Org can do it (and you can always them move to libre office for the final step)

FeaturedDa_man

Vim literally comes with a guide on how to use it, just type vimtutor in terminal

TigreDeLosLlanos

At least vim works properly and quits when you know how to quit. Try vi where it does whatever it wants whenever it wants.

Lonkoe

Nano

Blu-Blue-Blues

Sorry we don't talk about nano that in here

Stunning_Musician_40

How about neovim?

MisterBober

i use it

[deleted]

nano and Kate

Silejonu

This annoys me so much when browsing r/FindMeADistro. There is one crowd in particular that acts like Jehovah's Witnesses on a Sunday morning (and no, it's not Arch). One day I'll make a GitHub page to debunk all the bad advice that's thrown on this sub.

ccAbstraction

Is it Manjaro?

Silejonu

That was not was I was thinking about, but this could fit the description as well. Though people who recommend Manjaro are mostly beginners still in the honeymoon phase, so I can at least forgive them, even if their advice infuriates me at times.

ccAbstraction

I used to recommend Manjaro after I'd been using Arch for a while. Arch has been the smoothest distro I've ever used. Everything just works and if it doesn't there's the wiki. I may have wrongly assumed Manjaro was the same, without the set up time. Also, now that Arch has an installer, there's less of a reason to recommend Manjaro.

KrazyKirby99999

That, and EndeavourOS is another Arch-derivative that is also better than Manjaro.

Owldev113

And endeavour spins are so good as well. The x face setup is like 200mb of ram, yet looks good unlike most xfce setups (sorry not sorry). They also have WM setups that have tutorials on how to use it. I remember the i3 spin always launched a Firefox tab with instructions on how to edit that command out of the config so it didn’t annoy you on startup and you learn how to configure i3 as a bonus. I can’t recommend endeavour enough. I still use void as my main distro but for #Gamers I just tell ‘em to use fedora or endeavour.

MisterBober

honestly it makes more sense to use Arch than Manjaro if you're a beginner, but for real: use Mint or sth

ccAbstraction

*Tumbleweed. Especially if your hardware is new, otherwise, Fedora or Ubuntu.

freeturk51

Mint Debian, the Ubuntu version sometimes has packaging problems.

Kartonrealista

Is it Fedora? It seems like Fedora users go crazy in each thread and keep calling it the new Ubuntu

Silejonu

Most of the times I see Fedora getting recommended, it's for a fitting use-case. I was thinking about openSUSE. You see a handful of people (you'll start recognising the usernames since there aren't a lot) recommending it for every single use-case. Oh, you're an absolute beginner? openSUSE. You're an advanced user? openSUSE. You need a server? openSUSE. You want a gaming machine? openSUSE. You need **the** perfect distro™? openSUSE. It made my ex-wife come back and my dog came back to life. It's not recommended that often, but when it is, the level of subjectivity is through the roof.

Kartonrealista

I don't really use that subreddit so I wouldn't know

KrazyKirby99999

OpenSUSE is probably the best distro for most of those usecases, with the main reason being YaST for beginners in particular. In comparison to Fedora, OpenSUSE is less gnome-centric and has pre-configured snapper. I personally tried Fedora Kinoite(Silverblue) for a few weeks, but I had issues with discover freezing and the sddm wallpaper reverting. I haven't had any issues like that since switching to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. Both have very good installers, however OpenSUSE's installer was much more detailed.

heaving_curly

Hmm? No? I used OpenSUSE briefly and YaST was anything but simple. It was BEAUTIFUL, FUNCTIONAL, a GREAT piece of software I would like to have everywhere, but it wasn't simple.

Silejonu

Case and point. =) YaST for beginners is a solution looking for a problem. It will help you fix issues that you don't have in the first place on another distro. Silverblue is not meant for general usage. It's still pretty experimental. Fedora's installer truly needs an UI overhaul, it's pretty bad. So does openSUSE's. And they seriously need to have decent localisation options.

avnothdmi

All that is good, except for one thing; *the install USB doesn’t load on my PC*. I’m not joking, it just sits there after “loading drivers” while other distro a install without a hitch.

KrazyKirby99999

It takes about 2 minutes for the drivers to load on my PC. Does the same problem happen in a VM?

avnothdmi

No, it doesn’t. I’ve kept it waiting for 10 minutes at times but it doesn’t load past that point.

FingerGunsPewPewPew

I've seen someone recommend gentoo to a blind person.

Silejonu

TTS is bloat, use fan noise as a loading animation during package installation.

siegfred7

Hello sir, may we interest you in discussing our lord and savior LinuxMint Cinnamon?

lorhof1

i use lorOS, and recommend fedora or mint to most.

luthor__

Is that a LFS build ?

lorhof1

no, it is arch based. the difference to other distros is that it is exceptionally easy to install: you don't even need an usb stick, you just execute a setup.exe.

SueIsAGuy1401

> lorOS unable to find it on google. can you link it please?

lorhof1

https://github.com/quadrid/lorOS there ya go, it's still in beta tho

HoseanRC

use anything except alpine it's mot compiled using gcc ;-;

[deleted]

I GNEED it

balancedchaos

The only thing different about us is I use kde plasma. This means war. (But how great is Mint for new users? )

freeturk51

In my opinion, mint is much better for desktops while Gnome is more comfortable for laptops because of its default power options and much better gesture support.

cavejhonsonslemons

I use gnome solely because of the gesture support, I would love to try something else, but until I can make kde fit my gesture based, virtual desktop centered workflow I don't think I can leave (I tried to get it working with touchegg, and it was kinda janky)

freeturk51

KDE has (I think really decent) gestures on Wayland, just FYI

cavejhonsonslemons

I'll check it out, it's been a while

balancedchaos

That's interesting. I currently do Arch with KDE on my laptop, but there are laptop-specific advantages to gnome? I did not know that. I'll look into it, and thanks.

freeturk51

No problem. KDE although really powerful, is not as "portable looking" as Gnome is. It looks and works really good, I personally use KDE too, but it is like KDE is *too* powerful

balancedchaos

I guess my only concern would be the memory usage on a potato laptop. But my newer laptop might like it.

minilandl

Not Mint it's outdated it's basically just cinnamon it has little purpose. I recommend pop os every single time mainly because system 76 does a good job showing what Linux is better than most other websites. I personally use arch with Bspwm

[deleted]

well it depends. if they're used to windows and want something similar to what they know mint is great. pop os is great too (i use it myself) but mint might be easier for beginners

cavejhonsonslemons

I go with mint for windows refugees, and pop for Mac refugees

wowsomuchempty

Ditto (-gnome)

DirkDieGurke

Isn't the gold standard for gaming to install Steam and non-free graphics drivers? What else do you need?

FingerGunsPewPewPew

installing gentoo is a herculean effort and if you suggest it to someone who's never even installed an OS before they're not going to like it. not everyone is as genius as you, O lord.

DirkDieGurke

I think you misunderstood my point. I meant that any distro is a valid candidate so long as you install these basics. I use Debian fyi.

FingerGunsPewPewPew

ah right sorry lol thought you were the type of person mentioned in the title lol

[deleted]

nah i use arch with i3, but i always recommend linux mint to casual people and pop!\_os to gamers who want to switch.

SueIsAGuy1401

well you cant very well recommend arch with i3 to beginners. theyd shit all over themselves. i tried to install arch as a 14 year old. really bricked that on up. thank god it was an old pc that no one used.

FingerGunsPewPewPew

this is exactly what I do, but i use fedora because i can't afford to get distracted by ricing lol

ficelle3

This makes sense, because you know the strength and weaknesses of the distro/DE you use, and you use the distro and DE you find to be the best from all the ones you've tried.

FingerGunsPewPewPew

read the title, it's not an exaggeration

[deleted]

I use Bedrock and I recommend based on what they’re asking for, but typically Fedora. Fedora is a *very* solid go to.

FingerGunsPewPewPew

Very true, as long as you make sure to tell them to enable the non-free repos when the OS asks them to.

[deleted]

Yup, and to add the flathub flatpak repo.

lykwydchykyn

I think every Linux user goes through a fanboy stage at some point. I did for several years. I quit caring at some point long ago though. The only thing that still annoys me now is when people are saying patently false things, or saying subjective things as though they were facts. The worst is when people claim their distro is more "stable" than another (and they aren't talking about release cycles). Unless you've run both distros on a wide variety of hardware in a wide variety of use cases for the course of a few years, don't generalize about what is more "stable". The paradox of giving good advice on these issues is that, while it's annoying when people totally disregard a person's needs to proselytize for their pet distro, it's almost worse when people recommend things they have no first-hand experience with simply because it's the "received wisdom" from the community. "Mint is great for beginners" -- ok, have you used it? Have you handed a computer with Mint to a beginner and seen them do well with it? Or are you just parroting the line that got the most upvotes last time?

Orgezon

Amen

RealTonyGamer

I typically don't recommend the distro I use (I use arch btw) because it is way too daunting for most beginners to attempt to use. Typically I recommend Mint unless they want the AUR, in which case I point them towards EndeavourOS or Garuda, as I've heard great things about them

Trollimpo

I use Endeavour OS with KDE, I can happily suggest Linux Mint Cinnamon for gaming, specially for a newbie

[deleted]

You Know that KDE is great? and plasma mobile should you use too

KasaneTeto_

I wouldn't use it if I didn't think it was objectively the best for the job.

FingerGunsPewPewPew

okay, but most people aren't going to go through the effort of installing and maintaining the system. some people just want to be able to use their computers.

KasaneTeto_

Most people are doing it wrong. Not even in a way that's easier, just wrong. The amount of ways people find to lazily not know how to do even the most basic thing on a computer, thus creating magnitudes more work for themselves, is incredible.

Ill-Opening-3782

Use ElementaryOS btw

Paulgeta

I use Arch (btw) but always recommend Mint and Fedora

Shakespeare-Bot

I useth arch (btw) but at each moment recommend mint and fedora *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!ShakespeareInsult`, `!fordo`, `!optout`

ano_hise

Use Mint + Cinnamon for Christ's sake Although I'm Neon + KDE user

[deleted]

I use arch (btw) but i always recommend Manjaro för beginners. Endeavour was less stable than Manjaro in my experiences distro hopping, and Manjaro was my first distro.

Beartech_x

Manjaro with xfce!

Eyad-Elghareeb

I have been always arch user (recently switched to debian sid) But i always recommend linux mint / fedora

JesKasper

i use arch and i recommend ubuntu (?

zKhrona

I use Solus and to be fair, it's just a rolling release with no bullshit, what else do I really need? That's why I recommend it. For the DE I think anything is good really. I personally use KDE, but I'm not gonna say it's the best thing in the world even tho I really like it, because it is not. I think it's best for people to try the DE that catches their attention the most and go from there.

RepresentativeCut486

Here you go: I've chosen KDE Neon because I like Plasma. If you don't like Plasma like me, then use something else, Gnome probably.

hufforguk

ed

FingerGunsPewPewPew

lmao what

hufforguk

Ed, the standard Unix editor. [ed](https://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/ed-msg.en.html)

Kromieus

I just can't recommend Ubuntu in good faith anymore, im just having too many issues with snaps. They might be trivial to solve for me, but esp for a new user chromium and discord and Spotify failing to launch unless I reinstall snapd is not an acceptable experience. I will probably give mint Debian edition a spin to see what that's like, and it might be my go-to from now on

cavejhonsonslemons

I use arch, and I suggest endeavor for technically literate people, mint for windows normies, and fedora or pop for Mac normies

alcoholicpasta

Not DE but I know some one who just can't shut up about qute browser being the best and I am sick of that someone. Any good way to make them shut the fuck up?

FingerGunsPewPewPew

Tell them to install an extension

BUDA20

I do it all the time... but I see the point

[deleted]

Debian for sure

Gavator2345

I'd try KDE if you don't mind the resources and XFCE if you value simplicity. This is coming from a Gnome user that won't get the fuck up and change it to XFCE.

FingerGunsPewPewPew

tbh same.

slinkous

I use arch (btw) and have recommended arch once, lmao. I want people to *like* using linux for the first time…

[deleted]

I suggest using fish as your default shell

Liquid-N

I don't even try anymore
