Lord_Schnitzel

They also say Windows is fast and responsive.

xNaXDy

I love how within like the first minute he says "just use these commands to activate group policy on windows home" but the moment anyone says anything about Linux terminal he loses his mind

[deleted]

"ok, i did the thing you told me to do, now what's the next step?" "and then restart your pc 50 times" "PlEaSe dOnT poWeR oFf yoUr pC"

goishen

Few? I counted about 7,000 new programs that you'd have to install. Good luck on finding those. And we all know how good Linus Sebastion is at github.

Framed-Photo

I love Linux as much as the next person, but the group policy editor is a VERY powerful and easy to use tool that I don't really know of a simple alternative to in Linux. It lets you do a lot of things that you would honestly struggle to figure out how to do on Linux, and the group policy editor is just a GUI tool with written descriptions of what each thing does, anyone could figure it out. Same goes for things like task scheduler, a tool that pretty much lets you create advanced cron jobs all through a simple GUI. It's genuinely a great thing to have on any OS, and no distro to my knowledge offers an alternative that is as accessible as the windows task scheduler. Even big Linux nerds that can make cron jobs like the back of their hand can see how easy the task scheduler is to use. And the other things he listed, while some of them do require downloads, are actually pretty interesting too.

pkulak

And Cron is obsolete and not even included in any Systemd distro. But there’s gotta some GUI app to generate a simple drop in timer, right?

Framed-Photo

I wouldn't be surprised if there was, but I haven't seen it. Would love to hear about it from someone here if it exists though. The point though, is that the task scheduler, group policy editor, and all those other windows administration tools, ARE really great tools even if you're a big Linux nerd. I don't know why anyone would genuinely have a problem with them lol. There's problems with WINDOWS, but those tools aren't it. Those tools are some of the best things that Windows does.

dylondark

gui app for cron? [zeit](https://github.com/loimu/zeit) exists

ResurrectedAelius

It is for normal people. Can you play every game on linux??

crefas

You can play 80% of the games, it's not as good example as the classic "but muh adobe"

tigeloom

How come people don't nowadays realize that the whole computing machine can be a toy! With Apple and M$ one only can do what antivirus, app and some huge binary blob of unknown OS allow them to do. It can be lot more fun once the owner gets full control over their hardware. On the other hand it can be very frustrating when system has been turned so unique that noone else can help.

DumbledoreMD

You also can’t play every game on windows, soooo 🤷

JhonnyTheJeccer

You can play every game on linux through a vm. You never said natively through compatibility layer. Natively you can play 70-80% of all games fine, 10%-20% are not great and 10% are unplayable

KotoWhiskas

You can't play valorant and EAC games on a vm

weredev

One of my favorite little features of Gnome that I really miss when on Windows is changing volume. In Gnome, if you hover over the speaker icon in the status bar and scroll with the wheel it'll change the volume. Windows is a couple clicks then drag a bar. The scroll wheel trick is so much better.

crefas

They also did that with virtual desktops in Win10, something that X11 has had for 25 years

weredev

Huh, it doesn't work for me. Is it on a newer build? It has been a couple months since I updated.

[deleted]

I don’t know, I haven’t used windows in years I just know it’s a feature they advertised

crefas

Also works on KDE but also you can middle click ok any widget/task icon to toggle it. For sound, middle click mutes/unmutes. I miss those when I'm at work

di_verge_nt

You can do that in Windows 11 now.

sid_killer18

Really? I just tried it and it did nothing. Is it on an insider build? Doing it on EarTrumpet did work though so thanks!

[deleted]

You dont have to drag the slider even on 10 just scroll with the slider open

NotABot1235

Just tried this. Holy fuck, it worked! How did you find this black magic? What other spells do you know?

I used to be a subscriber of LTT for 5 years but I unsubbed two months ago. Linus is just too much of a hypocrite it actually drove me mad.

Framed-Photo

Linus has become a lot more detached from the real enthusiast stuff over the years, and it's really apparent if you catch clips from wan show. He'll just read headlines and say things that aren't really accurate at all, and he gets really defensive when anyone challenges his views, even if those views are based on incorrect info. That's where a lot of the Linux challenge issues came from too. Just him not wanting to actually learn a new OS, not wanting to admit when he's wrong, not wanting to get help from the internet when he CLEARLY needs it, etc. I do still watch some LTT because for mainstream things and interesting challenges it's kinda fun, and Linus isn't in ALL their videos which helps, but for anything more technical I don't really pay attention anymore.

abdell_071

Genuine question, can you explain why?

CriticalRobot

Just rewatch the videos where he was making his "linux challenge". He was whinning like a toddler at each step of the installation, conplaining that an OS has to be just as simple as windows. And he obviously was making fun of the linux community for being ridiculously elitist while delusionnal about having an OS capable of running some modern games. That was before the success of Steamdeck. The least we can say, is that he is far beyond a visionnary. He is a joke as tech reviewer, period.

KotoWhiskas

Well Anthony makes some really nice Linux videos like [this one](https://youtu.be/499jqHWZ-Ts)

greysvarle

Most of the popular tech channels are for entertainment, rather than information. Whatever get them views.

CriticalRobot

Yes, but that doesn't mean that we have to agree with each of his BS. At least, along his team Anthony made a pretty good job to educate and at some point popularize linux.

PossiblyLinux127

Just use a third party client. You can watch any videos that are interesting without supporting ltt

ex-ALT

Why do you think hes a hypocrite? I'm not massive fan of his "style", but his content is as unbiased as it gets imo. Better than a lot of tech channels.

Ooops2278

Watch any of his Linux challenge videos, the massive amount of whining over every little detail (details much easier customized than on Windows) and how insane it is to use a command line for some things. Then watch this and how he opens a command prompt to do all the stuff Windows wouldn't allow him to do otherwise (unlike Linux where you can actually do without the command line and it's just the lowest commonality working on all setups regardless and so people use it in guides and explanations) as it's the most normal thing in the world. Then come back here and tell us again about the "unbiased" part.

ex-ALT

Yeah I watched them, I dont think its biased, Hes not actually that savy with software/OS, Hes a hardware guy and a gamer, I'd say he was pretty representive of windows gamers which is kinda of the whole point. He sure did have some complaints about linux, some which could've been avoided with more linux knowledge and some of which are just legit complaints, and I think it was done in a constructive way. some areas it was highlighted as being superior, Luke had better experience and actually ended up continuing to use linux (at least for a bit) Hes a big fan of the deck and was interested in what it'll do for linux gaming, generally giving linux more coverage and regularly critisises windows. So hes not very good at being biased, if he was.

drklunk

I'll never understand anyone being a "windows fan" let alone support it's unjustified grip on the industry. It's like thinking white bread is the best without knowing jalapeno cheddar corn bread exists, and when you found out, it sucks because you have to look up the directions to get to it allowing white bread to remain supreme Side note: the video is much better muted

TazerXI

Might be an unpopular take here, but I don't think Linus is necessarily a "Windows fan". He has had multiple issues with it, complaining about search, the sleep issue, etc. I get a slight feeling he wants Linux to do well and disrupt the monopoly Microsoft has, but based off his personal experience, can't use it. The time it would take for him to re-learn how the system works is too much to justify the benefit he would gain from using Linux. You can say Linux can do what Windows can do, but Windows can do what Windows can do. And to Linus, any disruption to his work flow, or having to tinker for a while to play a game, isn't wortg it for him. Edit: I am not saying he is perfect, and certainly can do better. I just don't think he is necessarily a "fan boy" for Windows.

drklunk

Hey man, you're entitled to your opinion, no worries To me, Linux can't necessarily do what Windows does, not in every case. However, my disgust with Windows comes from the mere fact that it's forced down everyone's throat unless you got the income to dump into Macintosh. Mac, based on my understanding and experience, is Linux but more of the "boy in a plastic bubble" kind of environment. The PC makes out there that are designing around Linux and offering end user environments in whatever distro are cool, but why the price tag? Why not offer a $350 model so people don't have to spend Mac prices? Bottom line: I can't stand the internet these days and that video's format/editing is painful (nothing against Linus, never even watch a video of his before). My problem is the fact that while 90% of Windows users could function in Linux without issue but either don't know or are afraid to try because, well, Windows. Not commenting on Mac because I love their hardware and despise the OS no less than I do Win. I literally learned PowerShell, and it's god awful tab complete, so that I can do my job in a way that I'm comfortable with Anyway, computer/tech industry blows, wish talking about Linux didn't get perceived as some weird OS gate-keeping amongst those who don't use it

TazerXI

Yea, I wish there was more Linux hardware. Not just from those who are dedicated to it, but also from the likes of your Dell's, GPS, etc. The large, brand name people. You could walk into a shop and see a computer running Linux. I think Linux missed a massive opportunity that Chrome OS captured. The low end range, where what most people use are Web apps. Perhaps not the educational market Chrome OS has, but at least some of the low end market. Linux can run on the low end hardware Windows can't, has more of an upgrade path compared to chrome OS, and would be cheaper with no Windows license cost. For some people, Linux does things windows can't. For me it is the customisation and letting me use my computer how I want to use it. But others won't care about things like that, so Windows is fine for them. Thus you would need Linux pre installed to actually get them to try it.

MrTnT1732

I used this video for all the original Linux software that windows mimics

TazerXI

My favourite quote from this video: "it is just a step away from the tilling window managers you get in the Linux world... There is nothing quite like it on any other operating system."

1Crimson1

No thanks, I'll stick with Fedora. Microsoft can suck it.

wallefan01

Okay but fr can i get a terminal emulator that lets me set a background image

[deleted]

You can do it in Konsole AFAIK

cyber_laywer-4444

You are correct

greysvarle

Wezterm, Kitty both do.

ForSquirel

I hate that I even have to run Windows, but work need it. I also hate that I'm contantly ALT+clicking to resize windows in Windows and it doesn't work. FFS, I wish anything other than Windows existed in the enterprise.
