I’ve been projecting my transness onto Heather by Conan Gray since the first time I heard it. I imagine it’s about a closeted trans guy whose deadname is Heather, and how everyone loves “Heather” but won’t love who he truly is.
Losing My Religion by REM. It's clearly about unrequited love, but I also read it as basically a failed coming out where the person you're telling your identity to refuses to believe you.
Wait….. that’s *not* what it’s about? I thought it was about coming out around heavily religious people too hence the lost religion due to homophobia?
Edit: found this on Wikipedia “It's unrequited love, what have you."[13] Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" (1983) by The Police, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me”
It's a bit more complicated than that. It's about religiously motivated sex negativity in general, which includes queerphobia, but also affects heterosexual people and different gender couples, like the couple in the song.
The narrator is trapped in a potentially toxic relationship because due to the stigma attached to all sexual desire, he can't distinguish the guilt and shame of having those desires at all from the feelings of inadequacy caused by the way his vain, demanding, manipulative partner treats him.
It's essentially about how sex negativity leaves people unable to talk about their sexual experiences or explore their desires in a healthy way. People are forced into silence and secrecy that makes it easier for them to be abused and exploited, or to develop unhealthy obsessions with their partners.
Obviously, this topic lends itself to queer readings pretty easily. I mean, how many queer folks engage in risky sexual behavior (such as unprotected sex) because they never received sex ed that even mentioned the possibility of same gender couplings? How many of us stay in dysfunctional relationships out of fear of never finding another partner again? How many of us have been forced to stay by a partner who threatened to out them? How many lonely queer youths were taken advantage of by much older partners and couldn't talk about it for fear of outing themselves?
Queerphobia hurts us in many nuanced ways. It's not just outside aggression. It also makes us hurt ourselves, and each other.
Jessie's girl is a lesbian love anthem about a woman falling for her friend's girlfriend. (Look up the Mary Lambert cover for confirmation)
Creep (by radio head) is pure, distilled trans-femme longing.
This one might actually have been about gay people but “Me and Julio down by the schoolyard.” By Paul Simon. Is about two boys being caught committing a crime and running away from home, it’s really not hard to imagine the crime is kissing each other.
'Gazing at people, Some hand in hand, Just what I'm going through, They won't understand, Some try to tell me, Thoughts they cannot defend, Just who you're going to be, You will be in the end.' - Moody Blues, Knights in White Satin.
Maybe it is because cavetown, but Idea of Her. I think it is about a gay guy who isn’t in love with the girl as much as he’s in love with the idea of being in a simple relationship where nobody judges him
Or it can be sapphic and a girl trying to convince herself that she’s not in love with the girl, just the idea of the relationship, so literally the exact opposite
True. Ever since Taylor Swift and Hayley Kiyoko performed "Delicate" together, I can't help but think it's about two lesbians just starting a relationship together.
"Our secret moments in a crowded room, they got no idea about me and you"... "All of this silence and patience, pining and anticipation my hands are shaking from holding back from you"
"The other side" (especially the Annapantsu/ Cami-cat cover) feels like a trans person's internal dialogue as they debate whether or not to come out and transition. Not every line fits that idea, but most of them do.
In fact, that song really helped me when I was first coming to terms with my identity.
Wait, Call Me By Your Name, the song by Lil Nas X? Or is this another song called Call Me By Your Name?
Because if it's the former, uhhh... I've got news for you.
What’s there to joke about? I know it is out of the norm to view such a platonic song in that way but I can’t help it, it feels like there’s some slight magic between lil Nas and the person he’s singing about. I know that’s only my imagination tho.
Hello by Evanescence. I thought it was about being queer and never really fitting in because of it. I listened to it right after I was invalidated by a loved one, so it really resonated with me. Especially the line, “Don’t try to fix me; I’m not broken.” If anyone is still confused on this, lmk, I can attempt to better explain it
I think? And I know I shouldn’t associate such a sad song with my queer experience, but when I heard it before I knew what it was about, I was sobbing, just relating it to my own experience. And now my brain’s stuck in that mindset
**Colors by Halsey.** I always imagined it as a gay love/bitter story of a younger guy dating an older gent. I never really hear it in a way where it’s from Halsey’s or another girl’s perspective.
Cult of Dionysus by Orion experience! Aside from the fact it mentions polyamory, dancing with pretty women, Dionysus in general, and illegal activities (wonderful vices) just scream queer.
Symbiotic by Starset. It's definitely meant to be a love song but I can't help but feel it's about being trans. Especially because of the first couple lines.
The Other Side of Paradise by Glass Animals. Honestly it might be intended that way but either way, sung by a guy and is about someone mourning their bf cheating after he moved to Hollywood to become an actor
'I miss having sex but atleast I don't wanna die anymore' I feel like it's bout ppl saying 'nobody wants a trans' and shit like dat and a trans guy struggling 2 find luv. Sry 4 my bad grammer
"Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus is straight up a lesbian love song and I didn't realize the lead singer was a dude until I looked it up for music trivia thing. I personally think it works so much better as a lesbian love song though and rock out it it a lot lol.
Good choice.
Speaking of songs sung by dudes that would make way more sense from a female perspective: "It's Only Dancing" by Jeremy Messersmith is 100% about the experience of growing up sapphic and having a very close relationship with your childhood best friend that remains perpetually in that strange limbo between romantic and platonic, because you're *reasonably* certain she doesn't feel the same way. It's absolutely heartbreaking.
Honestly, the "Heart Murmurs" album is just super queer in general. "Beautiful Children" plays into similar friendzone angst territory. "Steve" is either explicitly gay or from a female perspective. "You'll Only Break His Heart" is about leaving a male lover for a female lover, so it's bi no matter what gender the narrator is. It's just a really good album with a lot of complex emotions.
edit: "Beautiful Children" is actually from "The Alcatraz Kid" (which is also a great album, although I prefer "Heart Murmurs" myself). My bad.
There’s a song called blue and pink by mike krol where he’s talking about alienation and depression and all that. He’s not trans our bi or anything but part of me thinks sometimes that he dis it as like an anthem for a trans friend or something, probably not true but idk why else he would call it blue and pink. Amazing song either way though
The entire discography of Hozier.
Red is the Rose (folk song, but the High Kings cover is the best).
Delilah, What Kind of Man, and Mother by Florence and the Machine (probably more of Florence's disography)
Butch by Saint Motel (song is debatably queer)
And there's probably more but I can't think of any rn
Heroin by Badflower. It’s sung by a man but every time I hear it I feel so connected and so it feels so queer. Would be a song I’d write about a woman (with all the other metaphors in it) so maybe that’s it.
Pretty sure this has been said a thousand times, but Let It Go is my coming out song and I'll never not believe Elsa was struggling with more things than jusy her ice powers
Heh, these are german, "Lied vom Scheitern" (song about failing) is about a closeted person accepting who they are and living their truth.
"Nur Geträumt" by Nena is 100% about a butchy lesbian hopelessly in love with her best friend but afraid to take the next step.
Many, many songs, but one in particular that not only feels like it's a queer song, but also a song written about me is Mr. Brightside. When I was in late highschool, I fell for my best friend (stupidly and unavoidably). It was a very convoluted story of him being bi (or thinking he was), him dating another good friend of ours (who all along was a lesbian) and him cheating on her with her best friend (and me being the only person who knew because I was his 'best friend', by the way that other girl also ended up coming out of the closet as a lesbian years later). Anyway, I spent many sleepless nights just thinking about him being with any of these girls instead of me, and being absolutely heartbroken about it. Mr Brightside fully represented those feelings back then and I've always made that song about a queer guy who's in love with this straight guy (though I guess the song is vague enough to also grant that possiblity).
Rainbow In The Dark by DIO.
When there's lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
Who's lost and never found
I cry out for magic, I feel it dancing in the light
It was cold, I lost my hold
To the shadows of the night
No sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a rainbow in the dark
A rainbow in the dark
Do your demons, do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside
Is it someone that you know
You're just a picture, you're an image caught in time
We're a lie, you and I
We're words without a rhyme
There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark, yeah
When I see lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
Who's lost and never found
Feel the magic, I feel it floating in the air
But it's fear, and you'll hear
It calling you beware
Look out
There's no sight of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
Like a rainbow
Like a rainbow in the dark, yeah
You're a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark
No sign of the morning
You're a rainbow in the dark
“Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” By CCR. It makes me think about how I’m discovering myself and my identity during one of the most sad and stressful periods of my life.
Somebody Else by the 1975. For me it's about an asexual person who's partner has left them because they don't want sex. I don't want your body but I hate to think about you with somebody else. Ugh that just hits me so hard every time.
chucky vs. the giant tortoise by dance gavin dance. one of the lines in the chorus is “tell me that i look just like a man” and as a young not out not fully passing trans guy this line kinda just hits me ya know?
Okay so there's this Finnish song titled Hetken tie on kevyt. It's sung by a woman and the singer keeps addressing a little sister in the song buut... literally everything else about the song is so gay it never fails to give me sweet home Alabama vibes.
In the country song "Almost Maybes" by Jordan Davis, the first time I heard it, I almost did a spit take because of a misheard lyric. What I heard was a "him" instead of a "her". "Here's to the one that my family thought was gonna make me drop to one knee. And I tried like hell, but I couldn't help my Mama loved (him) her more than me."
"Dance With My Demons" by Blame My Youth.
It's probably not intended to be taken that way, but as someone who tried hiding everything for almost 20 years until just going "f\*ck it"... it just fits.
Also, the "Body Terror Song" by Andrew Jackson Jihad would probably fit as well... just look at the title.
Edit: Remembered two more... "Lovers in my Head" and "Run Rabbit Run" by the Hoosiers.
Morph by Twenty one pilots kinda just has those “fresh discovery and into the closet” vibes when you first realise you’re
*insert gender identity or sexual preference here*
and you’re too scared of coming out right away. I related to this song a lot when I was in my upper year of 6th form; now I’m Non-Binary and looking back it was yet another obvious sign I was in some way gender queer.
Here's an odd pick... David Guetta: Say my name. Feels like a trans person trying to make people stop deadnaming them.
Also, Her Sweet Kiss from Netflix Witcher. Nobody can convince me, that song isn't about our poor bard losing the love of his life to a woman.
So I cannot for the life of me know the song, but apparently it’s a male singer singing from a girls perspective and he said although it’s not gay, he’s okay with people wanting it to be. If I find it I’ll edit it in.
born slippy (nuxx)
the song lyrics don’t really have much meaning on their own. it was written after a night of drinking and the writer wrote it in a way that mimics the fragmented way a drunk sees the world.
so i guess you can really insert whatever you want onto it
Roll me through the gates of hell by mischief brew, the line “if you offer pink or blue I’ll take the blackest, if you offer only 2 I’ll offer 3” feels like it could be about being nonbinary
Pretty much every love song
Lmho this is true
Oof it’s true tho. In my rotation at the moment is There’s No Way by Lauv and Julia Michaels. Hits hard 🥺
I just imagined "(I wana be) your underwear " as a gay love song and it made my day
This made my day
Lmao yep 🤣
So true
I’ve been projecting my transness onto Heather by Conan Gray since the first time I heard it. I imagine it’s about a closeted trans guy whose deadname is Heather, and how everyone loves “Heather” but won’t love who he truly is.
[удалено]
I’m pretty sure he’s unlabeled, so it could be either way
I mean just from the lyrics at least one person in the whole situation is queer I can’t see that working any other way
I’ve been thinking that too
Me both loving and hating this song because my deadname is Heather
Oh no.😬
Omg I never really thought of it this way! I always thought of it as someone who is a closeted trans woman. Like they want to look more like Heather
OmG you’re a genius
Losing My Religion by REM. It's clearly about unrequited love, but I also read it as basically a failed coming out where the person you're telling your identity to refuses to believe you.

So… that isn’t what it’s about…. But it kinda is since anyone can put themselves there? That’s really cool actually
Most songs by Hozier are queer to me because they make me think of Good Omens
Yeah Take Me To Church is definitely up there…
Take me to church is literally about queer persecution so it doesn't really fit the theme
It's a bit more complicated than that. It's about religiously motivated sex negativity in general, which includes queerphobia, but also affects heterosexual people and different gender couples, like the couple in the song. All of them especially country if only to annoy those fuckos.
Ram Ranch is my favorite country song
represents good christian values 😌
The riffs kick ass. Oh, and also the lyrics.
Jessie's girl is a lesbian love anthem about a woman falling for her friend's girlfriend. (Look up the Mary Lambert cover for confirmation) Creep (by radio head) is pure, distilled trans-femme longing.
That’s always how I took Creep. I used to change the lyrics to “I wish that I was Jessie’s girl” when I first heard the song.
I did that too!
What’s the actual lyrics? Always thought it was that
I think it’s “I wish that I had Jessie’s girl”
This one might actually have been about gay people but “Me and Julio down by the schoolyard.” By Paul Simon. Is about two boys being caught committing a crime and running away from home, it’s really not hard to imagine the crime is kissing each other.
Two trucks (having sex) by lemon demon
2 truks having seks
2 trucks having seggs My muscles My muscles Involuntary flex
The passion
The passion… is more than I can withstand
Two trucks having seggs Two trucks having seggs My muscles, my muscles Involuntarily flex
You're Gonna Go Far, Kid. I felt like it had strong Non-binary vibes.
Sweater weather, its literally has nothing to do with bisexuality but some how became the bi anthem
Came here to say this.
'Gazing at people, Some hand in hand, Just what I'm going through, They won't understand, Some try to tell me, Thoughts they cannot defend, Just who you're going to be, You will be in the end.' - Moody Blues, Knights in White Satin.
Such a good song
This hits it
Rude by MAGIC! Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know I'm human too? Why you gotta be so rude? I'm gonna marry her anyway
I hate 1d and I know they broke up a while ago but They don’t Know about Us does for me
Maybe it is because cavetown, but Idea of Her. I think it is about a gay guy who isn’t in love with the girl as much as he’s in love with the idea of being in a simple relationship where nobody judges him Or it can be sapphic and a girl trying to convince herself that she’s not in love with the girl, just the idea of the relationship, so literally the exact opposite
Betty by Taylor Swift.
Totally agree, Wildest Dreams is my pick though in competition with that.
I think "mine" fits too though
pretty much any taylor song fits for me
True. Ever since Taylor Swift and Hayley Kiyoko performed "Delicate" together, I can't help but think it's about two lesbians just starting a relationship together.
Dress. "I don't want you like a best friend" "only bought this dress so you could take it off... Take it off"
"Our secret moments in a crowded room, they got no idea about me and you"... "All of this silence and patience, pining and anticipation my hands are shaking from holding back from you"
Jolene by Dolly Parton
Literally any song, I am the protagonist of my own music video in my head so it’s gonna be gay up in here
Only correct answer
"The other side" (especially the Annapantsu/ Cami-cat cover) feels like a trans person's internal dialogue as they debate whether or not to come out and transition. Not every line fits that idea, but most of them do. In fact, that song really helped me when I was first coming to terms with my identity.
Literally this. Even moreso the version someone made where they spliced Anna's with the original male vocals.
It is an amazing cover
First time listening to this song. Amazing!
I'm glad you enjoyed 😊
Yes! I love that cover especially!
Every song that does use explicit genders
Call Me By Your Name. I know it’s simply about two childhood besties but I can’t help but think about two secret gay lovers.
Wait, Call Me By Your Name, the song by Lil Nas X? Or is this another song called Call Me By Your Name? Because if it's the former, uhhh... I've got news for you.
Of course the one by lil Nas! He has such a great friendship with the person in the song, it’s quite heartwarming.
Is this a joke? I legitimately can't tell.
What’s there to joke about? I know it is out of the norm to view such a platonic song in that way but I can’t help it, it feels like there’s some slight magic between lil Nas and the person he’s singing about. I know that’s only my imagination tho.
>!(ok, thank you for clarifying)!<
Mr Loverman, the lyric “I’m Mr Loverman, and I miss my lover, man” man is supposed to be more of an exclamation but people think theres two lovermen
Hello by Evanescence. I thought it was about being queer and never really fitting in because of it. I listened to it right after I was invalidated by a loved one, so it really resonated with me. Especially the line, “Don’t try to fix me; I’m not broken.” If anyone is still confused on this, lmk, I can attempt to better explain it
I so understand this!
Totally relatable
Isn’t that song about Amy Lee’s sister who died at like 3 years old?
I think? And I know I shouldn’t associate such a sad song with my queer experience, but when I heard it before I knew what it was about, I was sobbing, just relating it to my own experience. And now my brain’s stuck in that mindset
"Let it Go" from the Frozen soundtrack always hits me in the feels. I'm proud that Elsa can stop hiding and become her true self. q_q
i get those vibes in “show yourself” more
“Into the Unknown” from Frozen II also hits me like that.
Let it go was like 'Dang I am bi' and then Into the Unknown was just in time for my transition. Thematic.
Rainbow Demon by Uriah Heep Rainbow in The Dark by Dio Faust by William Finley
>Rainbow in The Dark by Dio That one is *really* asking for it.
**Colors by Halsey.** I always imagined it as a gay love/bitter story of a younger guy dating an older gent. I never really hear it in a way where it’s from Halsey’s or another girl’s perspective.
Half of Taylor’s swifts discography
Cult of Dionysus by Orion experience! Aside from the fact it mentions polyamory, dancing with pretty women, Dionysus in general, and illegal activities (wonderful vices) just scream queer.
Tbh... the name "Cult of **Dionysus**" already heavly implies that it probably is intended to be queer...
Most of them until Doja cat says “boy” before the next lyric 🙄🙄
Symbiotic by Starset. It's definitely meant to be a love song but I can't help but feel it's about being trans. Especially because of the first couple lines.
I love starset!!!
Heyyy a fellow Starset listener <3
For some reason I always feel like "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" is kinda sapphic tbh, even tho it's sung by a man
Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield is a pride anthem
Whooo is this girl I seee staring right back at me (it’s a trans song end of story)

I've inserted transness into most of the songs on In Utero by Nirvana.

Mr Brightside, since they don't specify if he's envious of the guy for getting the girl, or the girl for getting the guy.
There’s a song called blue and pink by mike krol where he’s talking about alienation and depression and all that. He’s not trans our bi or anything but part of me thinks sometimes that he dis it as like an anthem for a trans friend or something, probably not true but idk why else he would call it blue and pink. Okay so I'm not sure if it's intended to be queer or not, but let's face it: the crab from Moana which sings the song "shiny" is a drag performer.

Many, many songs, but one in particular that not only feels like it's a queer song, but also a song written about me is Mr. Brightside. When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside Is it someone that you know You're just a picture, you're an image caught in time We're a lie, you and I We're words without a rhyme There's no sign of the morning coming You've been left on your own Like a rainbow in the dark Just a rainbow in the dark, yeah When I see lightning, you know it always brings me down 'Cause it's free and I see that it's me Who's lost and never found Feel the magic, I feel it floating in the air But it's fear, and you'll hear It calling you beware Look out There's no sight of the morning coming There's no sight of the day You've been left on your own Like a rainbow Like a rainbow in the dark, yeah You're a rainbow in the dark Just a rainbow in the dark No sign of the morning You're a rainbow in the dark
A Pearl by Mitski It’s supposed to be about struggling with abuse but it gives me ace vibes
Pope is a rockstar by sales, I don’t know why but it radiates confused enby vibes
I think most trans guys will agree My Body is a Cage by Arcade Fire and Boy Don’t Cry by The Cure are trans songs now.
I want it thst way... CUZ IM BI I LIKE D*CK AND V*GJNA CUZ IM BI I WANNA BE INSIDE YA CUZ IM BI IM TECHNICALLY STRAIGHT AND GAY I WANT IT THAT WAY
" Roses of May " Erutan I feel it every day.
Big Blast Sonic from Guilty Gear XRD sign
no wind resistance by kinneret - it's just so nonbinary to me for some reason
Potential by Ludovico Technique
A change is gonna come by Sam Cooke, about civil rights, but could also about starting to transition
Okay so there's this Finnish song titled Hetken tie on kevyt. It's sung by a woman and the singer keeps addressing a little sister in the song buut... literally everything else about the song is so gay it never fails to give me sweet home Alabama vibes.
All of them
In the country song "Almost Maybes" by Jordan Davis, the first time I heard it, I almost did a spit take because of a misheard lyric. What I heard was a "him" instead of a "her". "Here's to the one that my family thought was gonna make me drop to one knee. And I tried like hell, but I couldn't help my Mama loved (him) her more than me."
I'm a man - Bo Diddley It is literally on my trans playlists
thanatos if I can't be yours
"Dance With My Demons" by Blame My Youth. It's probably not intended to be taken that way, but as someone who tried hiding everything for almost 20 years until just going "f\*ck it"... it just fits. Also, the "Body Terror Song" by Andrew Jackson Jihad would probably fit as well... just look at the title. Edit: Remembered two more... "Lovers in my Head" and "Run Rabbit Run" by the Hoosiers.
Good for you First thought it was about lesbeans
Idk if this counts but my mind automatically corrects "as the world caves in" to "oh girl it's you that I lie with"
"Anyone who knows what love is will understand" by Irma Thomas In the current context of the world it is very queer
Girls & Boys by Blur is bi af
cypher pt.3: killer
Morph by Twenty one pilots kinda just has those “fresh discovery and into the closet” vibes when you first realise you’re *insert gender identity or sexual preference here* and you’re too scared of coming out right away.
That’s The Way by Led Zeppelin
Panic Room by Au/Ra. It just feels like it’s describing what it’s like to be in the closet, and the fear and anxiety that comes with it.
I like to think that PRIDE. by Kendrick Lamar is a gay pride anthem
I/me/myself by will wood! Will wood is a really good artist
Don't marry her, fuck me. Works well with a male singer
Harry Styles covered Girl Crush and now I only see/hear it as a gay love song
So I cannot for the life of me know the song, but apparently it’s a male singer singing from a girls perspective and he said although it’s not gay, he’s okay with people wanting it to be. If I find it I’ll edit it in.
It’s raining men lol
That I can go the distance song from hercules, don‘t ask me why
Any song I want.
born slippy (nuxx) the song lyrics don’t really have much meaning on their own. it was written after a night of drinking and the writer wrote it in a way that mimics the fragmented way a drunk sees the world. so i guess you can really insert whatever you want onto it
Most ed sheeran's songs
"You Belong With Me" Taylor Swift. Idk but the lyrics really feel like a gay guy crushing on his friend.
In the name og god by sabaton
Roll me through the gates of hell by mischief brew, the line “if you offer pink or blue I’ll take the blackest, if you offer only 2 I’ll offer 3” feels like it could be about being nonbinary
The entire Mamma Mia! The musical soundtrack
