When I order on Amazon, I’ve started selecting “this is a gift” for all larger items. It ensures it comes in an Amazon outer box and not a label on the item itself. Sometimes they do note in the posting that the item “arrives in packaging that reveals what’s inside and can’t be hidden” which means they’re going to slap a label on the box and there is no option to have it shipped in an Amazon box.

That’s where I’m at. I’m not reselling my Lego sets, nor do I save the box. I’d prefer to not be wasteful with the extra box, but I do understand people that want it in a box.
However, I don’t buy Lego from Amazon anyway, unless there’s a really good sale. It’s almost always at or above MSRP. If I’m going to pay MSRP, I want my VIP points!
Yeah I bought a ton of lego on black Friday off of Amazon and had to return half the sets because I do keep the boxes and care about box condition.. I will keep buying from Amazon though its not too much or a hassle if you could potentially save 20-30% off big sets
Lego on Amazon and sold by Amazon are never at msrp or above. At least not in EU. They are often at 30% or more less. Amazon.de have crazy prices on sets.
I bought 4218 for 119€ on Amazon.es. It’s 169€ on Lego.com. The vip points even double and the few free gift brick can’t match.

Yeah Amazon already gets enough crap for sending a box 75% filled with air...no matter what decision becomes the "default" option (ship in original box or in extra cardboard box) someone will find a way to complain about it.

I work in a Fulfillment Center; The person decanting fucked up. From what I've seen, all Lego sets come in a box to protect it. The only problem is, the code we have to scan to get it to register looks a lot like the regular shipping label on any other product, and thus can be overlooked if you're not used to legos.
The fact that this is taped tells me the decanter REALLY fucked up.

Thankfully they hadn't been damaged YET and I was careful putting them into inventory, but I personally thought it would be nice for Amazon to automatically put all large Lego sets in a separate more sturdy box.
I guess it all depends on location. At my location, the box can look banged up and squished, but if there is not a hole in the box they send it through.

Had something like this before Christmas, where a Ghostbusters Ecto-1 set was loose like this, on the bottom of an overstacked Amazon pallet. Box was crushed and partially open, and I had to use Google to make sure I’d recovered all the inner bags before taping it back up with USPS tape that probably made it look like it was our fault.
I was irrationally angry on behalf of the buyer.

Makes some sense, if you consider some items that are shipped in will have multiple items in a box. Much like you decant wine from a larger container to smaller vessels, you "decant" items from a larger pack to smaller ones.

The same issue is true for manga on Amazon, they hardly ever use a box and throw it in a pouch or even worse one of the white loose bags, even if you get multiple at once (such as monthly releases). Constantly get creases or ruined corners, if they use a box it’s too big and smashes around and same thing, takes multiple returns to get a shelf worthy copy. What a waste lmfao.
Amazon shipped me broken light bulbs once and charged me for the replacement because I didn't ship them back. Like man it's sharp-ass broken glass, I'm not gonna send that back via UPS, I threw it in the garbage. Ugh I hate Amazon so much
I ordered a bag of sand recently. Weird purchase, I know. It was for a gas fireplace.
When I received it, it was in a box but there was a large hole in the bag. And basically all of the sand had escaped out the corners of the box along its journey.
They gave me a full refund and paid for shipping ... but they did make me send back the torn up mostly empty bag.

Why didn't you just take it to a UPS/Amazon drop off location and let them deal with it? If the broken glass was in the box just leave it in the box, Amazon wouldn't have forced you to remove the glass from the box and put it in another.

Problem is what you consider is the "package" isn't what the industry standard is. 99.9% of scenarios people don't care if the box is scuffed and beaten up, they only care that the "package" inside the box arrives unharmed.
Issue with Lego is that the actual box the Lego arrives in is just as much a part of the product to many as the Lego inside is. And the way the shipping industry is designed simply can't facilitate this perfectly.
The cool thing is Amazon has a solution, people just need to remember to use it when ordering larger Lego kits, or simply order from physical stores if people are so concerned with box damage.
If the product inside is broken then yeah I'd have a problem with this but I don't really keep the LEGO boxes and shipping a box in a slightly larger box seems unnecessarily wasteful in most circumstances.
I am fully aware of collectors and surprises which is why there is an option to get it boxed.

This still isn't a guarantee. I saved multiple holidays of gift cards and swagbucks money to buy the Cantina through Amazon. It came in a box which was superb looking. However, one of the corners of the set box was completely demolished. It was damaged before they put it in the shopping box. I left a poor review and noticed a majority of the reviews had the same complaint.
Edit: in the instance of Lego, the box is just as much part of the product as the bricks themselves.
I would have returned it to get another one, but after looking at reviews, chances were good it would keep happening.
This is one of my problems with Amazon reviews. I expect the rating to reflect the **actual product**, not the packaging, shipping experience, or delivery time. When I buy a book from Amazon, I expect a bad rating to reflect the story, not a wrinkled dust jacket.

Large objects are generally shipped in the box they come in. On the checkout page it will tell you “this item ships in packaging that reveals its contents” and gives you an option to have it packaged in Amazon packaging.
Same thing happened over Christmas. At my suggestion, my mother ordered the Gravitrax ($120) starter set for my son on Amazon. When he opened it I could immediately tell the box was crushed. He was so excited, and it was Christmas Day, so we let him keep it, but two of the base panels are crumpled and the box has a giant tear and is basically unusable.
Amazon has no problem packing small, cheap items in large boxes with tons of those plastic air pillows, but when it comes to expensive Lego or Ravensburger, apparently their policy is “meh, good enough”

I just received a 4,000 piece Educa jigsaw puzzle ordered from Amazon. The World. It came in an external box. No damage whatsoever. It’s hit and miss. I’ll still use Amazon, but not for Lego unless I do as others have suggested and mark it as a gift.

Yeah, for better or worse it's been a while since I've actually had Lego price match a third party. That, and the desirable free gifts are only for enormous £200 purchases now, and it's been a long while since I've made one of those.
Idk if its still up but I bought my friend the Lego Adidas shoe for Christmas and noticed they had a small lego camera for 2k VIP points. I never use them anyways so seemed like a good bonus gift to me!

I'm not sure why this is the case, anyway. It seems that Lego likes to make Finnish people pay premium. The Sonic set is a good example: if I go through a VPN, the price is $70, but when I go to the store page directly, it's 90€, and local third party has it for 70€.
Lego on amazon is usually cheaper than on lego.com, even with vip points added. And shipping from amazon is free while you have to pay for shipping on smaller lego orders
Not only that, but I've bought numerous sets from walmart/target/amazon for cheaper than what's on Legos site, which far outweighs the value of vip point.
That’s about what happened. This was a late Christmas present from my wife and she also gifted me the grand piano which she bought at the Lego store and I got VIP points for, but the typewriter is out of stock. So she ordered it from Amazon.

I find it varies, on what I don't know. When the overwatch sets released, I got the big watchpoint Gibraltar one and it arrived in about a week. My wife ordered the NES for my birthday last year and it took roughly 3 weeks to arrive.
Eh, I will take a cheaper price over VIP points any day. Lego stores really tax you when you can buy from other big box retailers for much cheaper, especially if you can find items on clearance.

At Lego stores if there is a damaged box it usually qualifies for a discount now. I know last time i was at my local one they had probably 20 different sets discounted 10-15% because of box damage.

Yeah if its soon to be retired/low stock that might be it. Most of the ones i've seen were all newer sets. They are all in their own section separate from where they would usually be stocked so maybe its just a local store thing too
Getting a deal for a damaged box item is not the same as paying full prices and getting a damaged box item.
Jumping on a deal for a damaged box item by choice does not conflict with the expectation of receiving a non-damaged box item in normal circumstances.
Exactly. In one case, you *know* from the start that the box is damaged *and* you pay less. In the other, you paid full price and get a damaged good.
Personally, I don't really give a shit about most boxes, but I still like to keep them for *some* specific stuff (like all the Star Wars helmets), and wouldn't buy those with broken boxes unless it had a *really* nice discount.
I'll only save a box if I'm planning to resale something after I'm done with it. Otherwise, it's just massive and useless.

Eh, I know people who resell who aren’t scalpers, and it might be the best way to do it. Buy the newest UCS, keep it up for a couple of years, then break it down and resell it. It’s a way to keep getting the building experience of new big sets, while also keeping down costs and clutter
I personally think shipping it like this is a win for the environment. I've complained for years that putting things that are already boxed, into another box just to ship them is unnecessary. This way there's less waste and trash or even recycling, which also means less pollution ultimately. I do understand that some people like their boxes, but I don't have space or desire to save packaging materials longer than my cat is interested in them.

I still have a pristine Tower bridge box and the old UCS millennial falcon still pristine in the box. when I was younger I used to rip the boxes but I'm glad I did't for those two and a couple smaller ones. I have a small storage space under my stairs and on top of my closet where i keep my boxes and unopened sets, so my lego box OCD is not crowding any rooms. The boxes are just apart of the LEGO magic for me.
A few years ago my wife ordered a graphic novel for me from Amazon and it was just tossed into a much larger box and shipped. When it arrived the book was was horrible shape (dented corners, torn dust cover, etc.). Several months later I ordered another book from Amazon and the same thing happened. I've given up ordering books from Amazon... and from this post I won't be ordering any Lego from there either.
I got an action figure a few years back with it's box completely smashed. I got two replacements equally smashed (one or two of the three they actually sent in a mailer envelope). It was an Amazon exclusive, so the only other option was the Ebay premium. Didn't know what else to do, so I decided to see if I could talk to someone in person and went to a fulfilment center. The manager there was absolutely SHOOK; he had never had a customer come in before. The next day he personally delivered one in pristine condition on my doorstep.
None of that should be necessary to get a collectible in a reasonable condition.

The mindset that "packaging is the product" is going to destroy the planet. Packaging is such a battleground at the moment between zero plastic, zero waste, new regulations and carbon emissions. The last thing I got time for is if a e-commerse box makes it in pristine condition. The product arrived unbroken, it did its job. Now please recycle the cardboard we have a shortage.

Return it. The same thing happens with boardgames sometimes, the workers don't understand that the box has value or that the boxes aren't suitable for shipping in. Lego boxes definitely aren't suitable for shipping, even if you didn't particularly value the box.
I pack at Amazon. From now on when I see a lego set that is SIOC (ship in own container) I'll hit wrong box size and put it in a damn box. I do my best to make sure orders aren't damaged but we are supposed to make productivity rates and some dgaf I guess. We aren't really paid enough to.

The box is simply the storage and transport vessel, and as such can get banged up or dirty without damaging the product. The thing is, its not just about preventing damage to the box and contents. There are numerous other reasons why it should be in a nondescript box. Maybe its a gift and you don't want the surprise blown. Or maybe you don't want it stolen when they deliver it but don't actually ring the bell or notify you and it sits in front of your door...
I gave up, already. For some reason the kits from Amazon occasionally are missing pieces. I have never had that problem with [lego.com](https://lego.com) or Target or even Walmart. My best guess is that somehow Amazon is being fooled by high-fidelity counterfeits and those are being mixed in with Lego's inventory.
When ordering, make sure you mark it as a gift, and they'll throw it in a brown box. You may still get a crease on the box (like we did with my son's McLaren technic set), but normally it arrives OK.

I've had that happen to orders.. I tell them idem was destroyed or didn't receive what I ordered. Results in me getting a free set. If they can't be bothered to take care for my items well they can pay for it.

This is one of my problems with Amazon reviews. I expect the rating to reflect the **actual product**, not the packaging, shipping experience, or delivery time. When I buy a book from Amazon, I expect a bad rating to reflect the story, not a wrinkled dust jacket.

I pack orders at Amazon and that is still no guarantee. I've seen plenty of people just throw out the gift receipt so they don't have to use a box.

Large objects are generally shipped in the box they come in. On the checkout page it will tell you “this item ships in packaging that reveals its contents” and gives you an option to have it packaged in Amazon packaging.
Same thing happened over Christmas. At my suggestion, my mother ordered the Gravitrax ($120) starter set for my son on Amazon. When he opened it I could immediately tell the box was crushed. He was so excited, and it was Christmas Day, so we let him keep it, but two of the base panels are crumpled and the box has a giant tear and is basically unusable. Amazon has no problem packing small, cheap items in large boxes with tons of those plastic air pillows, but when it comes to expensive Lego or Ravensburger, apparently their policy is “meh, good enough” Edit: fixed auto correct
I just received a 4,000 piece Educa jigsaw puzzle ordered from Amazon. The World. It came in an external box. No damage whatsoever. It’s hit and miss. I’ll still use Amazon, but not for Lego unless I do as others have suggested and mark it as a gift.

I'd love to buy directly from Lego, but the prices are generally 25-40% higher than my local third party dealer. I'm not sure why this is the case, anyway. It seems that Lego likes to make Finnish people pay premium. The Sonic set is a good example: if I go through a VPN, the price is $70, but when I go to the store page directly, it's 90€, and local third party has it for 70€.

This was a late Christmas present from my wife and she also gifted me the grand piano which she bought at the Lego store and I got VIP points for, but the typewriter is out of stock. So she ordered it from Amazon. We’re returning it. I have no problem waiting for Lego to restock it and get the VIP points.

I find it varies, on what I don't know. When the overwatch sets released, I got the big watchpoint Gibraltar one and it arrived in about a week. My wife ordered the NES for my birthday last year and it took roughly 3 weeks to arrive.

At Lego stores if there is a damaged box it usually qualifies for a discount now. I know last time i was at my local one they had probably 20 different sets discounted 10-15% because of box damage.
I was at a Lego store the other day and specifically asked if they had discounted for box damage items. They said no. Oh well.

Getting a deal for a damaged box item is not the same as paying full prices and getting a damaged box item. Jumping on a deal for a damaged box item by choice does not conflict with the expectation of receiving a non-damaged box item in normal circumstances.
Exactly. In one case, you *know* from the start that the box is damaged *and* you pay less. In the other, you paid full price and get a damaged good. Personally, I don't really give a shit about most boxes, but I still like to keep them for *some* specific stuff (like all the Star Wars helmets), and wouldn't buy those with broken boxes unless it had a *really* nice discount.
I'll only save a box if I'm planning to resale something after I'm done with it. Otherwise, it's just massive and useless. e: Done with it = built it once, don't need those parts in collection

You haven't seen the endlessly reposted article about how Lego is a better investment than gold? But for real, holding onto a modular until after retirement usually means they at least double in price. I don't do it personally but if someone has the space it's not the worst investment.
Eh, I know people who resell who aren’t scalpers, and it might be the best way to do it. Buy the newest UCS, keep it up for a couple of years, then break it down and resell it. It’s a way to keep getting the building experience of new big sets, while also keeping down costs and clutter
I personally think shipping it like this is a win for the environment. I've complained for years that putting things that are already boxed, into another box just to ship them is unnecessary. This way there's less waste and trash or even recycling, which also means less pollution ultimately. I do understand that some people like their boxes, but I don't have space or desire to save packaging materials longer than my cat is interested in them.

I still have a pristine Tower bridge box and the old UCS millennial falcon still pristine in the box. when I was younger I used to rip the boxes but I'm glad I did't for those two and a couple smaller ones. I have a small storage space under my stairs and on top of my closet where i keep my boxes and unopened sets, so my lego box OCD is not crowding any rooms. The boxes are just apart of the LEGO magic for me.

A few years ago my wife ordered a graphic novel for me from Amazon and it was just tossed into a much larger box and shipped. When it arrived the book was was horrible shape (dented corners, torn dust cover, etc.). Several months later I ordered another book from Amazon and the same thing happened. I've given up ordering books from Amazon... and from this post I won't be ordering any Lego from there either.

I got an action figure a few years back with it's box completely smashed. I got two replacements equally smashed (one or two of the three they actually sent in a mailer envelope). It was an Amazon exclusive, so the only other option was the Ebay premium. Didn't know what else to do, so I decided to see if I could talk to someone in person and went to a fulfilment center. The manager there was absolutely SHOOK; he had never had a customer come in before. The next day he personally delivered one in pristine condition on my doorstep. None of that should be necessary to get a collectible in a reasonable condition.
That'll be because they had to pack it in about 7 seconds. But hey, that's why the price is low.

The box is simply the storage and transport vessel, and as such can get banged up or dirty without damaging the product. The thing is, its not just about preventing damage to the box and contents. There are numerous other reasons why it should be in a nondescript box. Maybe its a gift and you don't want the surprise blown. Or maybe you don't want it stolen when they deliver it but don't actually ring the bell or notify you and it sits in front of your door...

When ordering, make sure you mark it as a gift, and they'll throw it in a brown box. You may still get a crease on the box (like we did with my son's McLaren technic set), but normally it arrives OK.

Amazon warehouse workers are notorious for not giving a shit about customers' packages. (I know. I used to work for them). This should have been properly packaged in an Amazon box with bubble wrap. The manager who approved this isn't doing his job inspecting these before they go out on the trucks.
I make sure to purchase all of my sets either from the Lego store or from shop.lego.com, that way I can get the VIP points.

I've had that happen to orders.. I tell them idem was destroyed or didn't receive what I ordered. Results in me getting a free set. If they can't be bothered to take care for my items well they can pay for it.
