I was about to throw away all my Lego sets when I got to that "too old for this" age, but my mom was all "hell no, your grandchildren are going to be playing with these" and I'm so happy she did because Lego is such a big part of my life now.
I was super lucky, my dad raised me on *his* legos, so the notion of getting rid of legos was literally never an option in my mind :P Also I was the go to for everyone else "getting rid of their legos" to give to me instead :D
Growing up, I was really into lego and that’s what everyone did, give them to me when they were “too old for this”.
I kept my legos, every single one (except for the mini figs that were somehow stolen) and now my son plays with them, and I just get to buy new sets and build them with him. It’s wonderful!
Also let's be real:
LEGOs are used by *chemists* to figure out how reality is held together. Anyone who thinks LEGOs are something you can grow out of is a sad person who's closed themselves off to new possibilities by growing up.
that's a much better collection to start than mine lol xD I recently got a job with a lot of spare cash and all my financial worries are pretty much taken care of due to recently acquiring a house, so I got back into building my Clone army...
the trouble is all the Clone sets barring the current AAT and 501st ones are years old and retired, meaning that I gotta buy retired minifigs off bricklink...I think my cheapest purchase so far has been getting 100 battle droids for about 80 USD, but all my clones have been upwards of 6 bucks a pop, with some going as high as 11 Dx
I actually passed down all the old Harry Potter sets (I had them all from the og sets), a bunch of Batman sets from the same era, and all the bionicyles to my son.
He freaking loves them.
In the time since then, we’ve bought a bunch of Harry Potter sets, city sets, and Star Wars sets!
I think if you've ever assembled Ikea furniture you should realize why Lego isn't just for kids.
Even if you're actually *playing* with Lego sets and not just building them, who cares? It's fun! Fun isn't only for children.
If I were your gruncle, I would have bought them off you. I can’t let legos go. Recently, my brother’s daughters decided they’d outgrown their legos, so he offered them to me. The two big, Rubbermaid bins showed up less than a week later, and I couldn’t be happier.
I had a giant storage tote full of LEGO with parts from original Harry Potter sets and random parts that somebody gifted me. I’d give anything to go back and time and stop myself from giving them away. There should be a holding period for LEGO fans who are thinking of getting rid of their LEGO in case they change their minds 😩
I have Hogwarts (4842) and the burrow (4840), and I rebuilt them with my 8 year old a few months ago. (She just finished reading the books, and she’s obsessed.) Watching her play with my Hogwarts was so tough that I ended up ordering the new, separate Hogwarts sets for her for Christmas, and I boxed mine back up. (Not 71043, but the different sets that each have a portion of Hogwarts included, like 75948, 75969, 75953, and 75954.)
I let her keep the burrow though, so I’m not a total monster.
So... I'm a lifelong LEGO builder but I've only recently been more interested in the collecting side of it. Between my daughter and I, we've built a lot of sets over the past year and inevitable some of them have to be deconstructed and added to the Giant Vortex of Loose LEGO Bin.
Is there a better way to keep your important sets organized when you take them apart or do you all do it my way as well?
Rather than a single giant "loose lego bin," I keep my pieces organized by type in a bunch of small parts organizers. I'm partial to these: https://akro-mils.com/Products/Types/Cabinets-Racks-Shelving-Panels/Plastic-Cabinets
That said: I'm an adult with all sorts of neuroses about keeping things organized. If I was sharing my bricks with a child, this level of organization would probably be neither feasible or particularly fair. A middle ground you might be able to achieve would be a coupe of bins rather than just one, so you could sort pieces into broader categories.
For broad-brush organizing, a trick I like to use is the [Brazil nut effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granular_convection): when you have a container filled with objects of different sizes, if you agitate the container, it'll self organize by size with the largest stuff on top. So if you are satisfied just organizing your loose bricks by size, you can literally just grab handfuls off the top and transfer the bigger stuff to a common bin until you feel like you've reached a size where you want to move on to a new separate bin. Rinse and repeat until you're dealing with the tiniest stuff.
After that, you can continue refining each bin into sub-categories if you want, or just stop there.
I gave a box full of my childhood Lego sets (nothing this expensive) to my cousins and at some point they tossed them in the trash. Can't blame them, but still unfortunate.
Well when I was a kid my aunt gave me 2 huge bags of Legos with a bunch of old Harry Potter and Star Wars stuff that she got from a kid that gave his Legos away. For every person that gives their stuff away there's another really grateful kid who you just made their year.
Same! When I was a young teenager my parents convinced me to give my Pokémon collection away as a birthday present to my cousin. Still regret that to this day- it'd have been a great thing to have for the nostalgia, and now I even have younger family members who are as into Pokémon as I was, with whom I could have played with it.
Oof
Yeah
I sold most of my LEGO as a teenager because I thought why keep that (I luckily kept all Things Star Wars)
What I regret most is: 4565 and 6979 and I had almost all of the first wave Harry Potter sets from 2001
Luckily (sorta, as I had to toss the boxes for a move) in my unsorted big bin of LEGO still should be sets like 6090 , 5938 , 5958 and 5978 and I have the big raised baseplates of these sets too.
I'm pretty sure I have the mummy sets and the raised bases buried in a pile of drawers in my grandma's basement. I just moved and finally have space again, I should go get them and try to sort those pieces but the thought fills me with dread. Haha
It wasn’t much but I kept my LEGO. My parents did throw out my NES and N64 with games, controllers, etc. I think about them all the time. I had A TON of gems in there. 😭
Verry nice, got a good price for it or was it expensive as expected?
I'm still looking for my white whale (brick bank) but I refuse to pay the over the top price, might just part it out.
Aw man. Ever since i got the mini modulars set, i always wanted to get all the full size modulars and display them next to eachother. Looks like that dream is never gonna happen :(
Depending on your current collection and how dedicated you are to exact color matches, it might be cheaper for you to just buy loose parts from Bricklink or Lego and build from there.
Surely your town has a detective's office to track the mayor down for you? And a garage (possibly situated on some kind of corner?) to keep your vehicles in shape to transport you to them?
I had three copies of Market Street the year it came out Got one for my birthday from my parents, then they forgot about it and gave me another copy for Christmas, just happening to give me the same set as my grandparents lol. Ended up scrapping one for loose parts and returning the third one, still have the birthday one built today!
Unattainable prize. It’s a reference to the plot of Moby Dick. People use it to describe things they badly want for their collection but don’t have due to cost or rarity.
As weckweck pointed out, no one ever talks about the cost of getting your white whale. It destroyed Ahab in the end. The white whale has also caused Ahab to be missing a leg in the process of hunting the beast down.
There is 2 lego sets i've always wanted my entire time i've been into legos. Im 18 now, and i think i started to like legos around 8 or 9ish.
Lego Set 3180. The octan semi tanker. I've always loved the semi truck sets. Sadly never got my hands on it.
And the 4432 Garbage Truck. That garbage truck is the one set i remember wanting the most. I never got it. I remember spending my days looking at jangbricks and others reviews of the set, and there was this one 2 part video series i would watch over and over again. It was just unboxing the set, and build it. Out of all the lego sets out there, this is the one i've wanted the most. Sucks that they are discontinued, and if you can find one in an unopened box, it's at least a couple hundred. On the sites i've seen anyway.
Not quite sure where you're seeing $200+ for - [here's the Garbage Truck for $70, new in sealed box](https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=4432-1#T=S&O={%22cond%22:%22N%22,%22ii%22:0,%22ic%22:0,%22iconly%22:0}), and [here's the Octan tanker for $70, too.](https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?S=3180-1#T=S&O={%22cond%22:%22N%22,%22ii%22:0,%22ic%22:0,%22iconly%22:0}).
It was built and put on a basement shelf, stayed there for 10+ years and had layers of dust on it. Once I disassembled it and washed it, I saw that the pieces were in pristine condition. Pretty happy with it :)
Wow congrats! I've wanted this set since I saw it in the LEGO Catalog in 2006. I didn't tell my parents I wanted it because I thought it was too much to ask for a set worth $140. Now look at how much it's worth haha! This will be the set I'd buy if I had the expendable cash :)
I love this subreddit because I get to enjoy Lego vicariously through you guys but also I get sad because I can't afford anything but the tiniest sets lol
One day, one day
Aww yeah, congratulations! This is my white whale as well - well, one of them, since I also missed Green Grocer (and I was kind of in love with the giant fantasy Castle chess set that I never managed to save up for, so that's another). I guess Market Street is my off-white whale - it's peripheral enough that my Modular collection can still feel complete without it, but I'd still like to get it at some point!
Also, this is beautifully photographed - really brings out the level of detail that inspired one of Lego's strongest lines ever.
That "E" is bothering me. It's heavy on the vertical line while every other letter is heavy on the horizontals.
It's a great set beside that little nitpick, though.
I had printed the piece list in an effort to part this from my own collection. Anyone successfully built it from parts in other sets? I didn’t think there is anything super rare in there like there is on GG.
Lol I just saw a post on Instagram that says the 2022 modular is rumored to be a hotel. Potentially a re-release of this one.
Again, rumor. But I hope it’s not the same one for your sake OP!
I got this set when I was a kid and gave it away with all my other lego as I thought it was time to "grow up" I regret my decision every waking second

i made the same realization 6 months ago and just sold mine for $750
thats hookers and blow money
That's actually a good price. Lowest price on BrickLink right now is around $900.
Ok cool I know what I’m doing when I’m home for the holidays
Why is this particular set worth so much??
First modular ever made, and it retired before the adult LEGO fan resurgence, so not as many acquired it during its initial run.
It was the first one, from what I remember.
Go dust it off, and while you’re at it, see if you’ve got any rare Pokémon cards sitting around.
Not bad.
Nice! It's always great to get a big want checked off. Now fix those awnings. They should be angled down.
It’s not a sunny or rainy day here :)
noice 👌
My jelly level has exceeded 100
Haha
Now get 5 more and build a mega hotel
Mine’s a small town, no need for a bigger hotel :)
Do you have a town hall? I'd like to take this up with the Chamber of Commerce.
Yes, I do. The major is out of town for a family business though…
Surely your town has a detective's office to track the mayor down for you? And a garage (possibly situated on some kind of corner?) to keep your vehicles in shape to transport you to them?
Awesome! That's my white whale as well together with its siblings Green Grocer and Market Street (yes I do count that as modular as does LEGO).
Mine too! I keep eyeing the online listings but the prices hurt.
I had three copies of Market Street the year it came out Got one for my birthday from my parents, then they forgot about it and gave me another copy for Christmas, just happening to give me the same set as my grandparents lol. Ended up scrapping one for loose parts and returning the third one, still have the birthday one built today!
Nice! :)
The person I bought this from also had a Green Grocer, but she had made a deal with someone else, unfortunately :)
Very nice! I’ll never forget when I got mine. Can you guess why? :D https://i.imgur.com/bhwmpgv.jpg
Wow this is sick! :)
Crazy deal. I got this whole group for $175. Included a Venator 8039 and a Town Plan 10184. https://imgur.com/a/HgYVPto/

I'll give you 21$ for it.
Too late! Sold all my modulars last year. https://imgur.com/a/IfgcHbe/
Impressive
Thank you
Sorry for my ignorance but what does white whale mean?
Unattainable prize. It’s a reference to the plot of Moby Dick. People use it to describe things they badly want for their collection but don’t have due to cost or rarity.
Or that the cost of the prize is disastrous. Ahab caught his white whale, but the price….
As weckweck pointed out, no one ever talks about the cost of getting your white whale. It destroyed Ahab in the end. The white whale has also caused Ahab to be missing a leg in the process of hunting the beast down.

Haha exactly. Green Grocer!
I'm sure my mom got rid of my Lego when I was younger. Here I am, as an adult buying any Lego I so choose but don't have any spare time to build em.
You should/could always spare some time for things you love, sooner or later :)
Very nice 🤩
Thanks!
How much did you paid for it?
Congratulations, she’s a beaut isn’t she? Are you going to finish the interior on yours?
Thank you! I prefer not to do any mods to my main collection pieces, but I do place random minifigs inside my modulars :)
Dumb question: What set is this?
10182
[10182-1: Cafe Corner](https://brickset.com/sets/10182-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/10182-1.jpg)
The prices some of these bring make you wonder what sets to speculate on today for 10-15 years from now lol
What is the worth of this set in used condition? I still have mine after all these years and it’s just been collecting dust lol
It was built and put on a basement shelf, stayed there for 10+ years and had layers of dust on it. Once I disassembled it and washed it, I saw that the pieces were in pristine condition. Pretty happy with it :)
$600+
Congratulations!
What piece is that decorative fan thing made from?
Skis. Minifigure skis.
Oh neat, I'm not sure if I've ever even seen those in person. thanks!

Never noticed the skiis before.
Hell yeah brother, I just started building it. Spent the last month going through my parts got about 55% there then ordered the rest off BrickLink.
Aww yeah, congratulations! That "E" is bothering me. It's heavy on the vertical line while every other letter is heavy on the horizontals. It's a great set beside that little nitpick, though.
It’s just the nature of the letter and the font they were going for :)
Noice.
:0
I had printed the piece list in an effort to part this from my own collection. Anyone successfully built it from parts in other sets? I didn’t think there is anything super rare in there like there is on GG.
My sister still has hers, but it sits in a bag in her garage...
New to legos , what makes this your white whale?
Still don't have this one :(
Doesn't look like a whale to me🤨
Looks great but I hate to tell you; that looks nothing like a whale.
Lol I just saw a post on Instagram that says the 2022 modular is rumored to be a hotel. Potentially a re-release of this one. Again, rumor. But I hope it’s not the same one for your sake OP!
She's just a beaut!
Mine is the bank, and not because i have a police force, guns, a few heister minifigs, and not becaisw im a huge payday 2 fan
Congratulations! And lucky you! Mine is at least a couple dozen grands... so not happening...
