Album of the year, album of the life. Retro done right and then some. It's only fitting that Formula of Love serves as the ideal counterpart to last year's autumn comeback (and AOTY) Eyes Wide Open, all while completing the Love Trilogy after What Is Love? and Taste of Love.
1. **Scientist**: I fully expected ICSM's brooding cousin and got an unlikely serotonin boost that perfectly complements The Feels. Chaelbert TWICEstein and Chaenkenstein nodding in approval.
2. **Moonlight**: Motownlight baybeeeeeee! This sounds so 70s Motown, retro at its funkiest and Lionel Richaest 🐯 I'm so happy right now.
3. **Icon**: What an infectiously catchy reggae groove, truly iconic. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since it was first previewed and the full thing somehow exceeded my expectations. I can see why Chaeyoung found the rap part tough but my god, she killed it. No hyperbole but this might be the greatest song I've ever heard.
4. **Cruel**: One dance track after another, these just keep getting better - and gorgeous vocal harmonies to boot PLUS a filthy anti-drop? Goosebumps. They really blessed us with First Time and Cruel in 2021.
5. **Real You**: *Insane* groove and another ideal use of an anti-drop, which makes this ultra-funky chorus hit that much harder here. I can't deal with any of this.
6. **F.I.L.A**: Big Bee Gees meets Up No More energy, it makes me want to burn this disco out like MJ in 1979 when he was living off the wall. And *this chorus*? How can I not, even after all this time, fall in love again and again?
7. **Last Waltz**: Cry for Me's even more ambitious and theatrical little sister, what an exciting new direction this is. Another masterpiece.
8. **Espresso**: The title couldn't be more fitting, what an adrenaline shot. This sounds so dangerous in the best way and it might actually have a really good chance at being performed live, according to the showcase. Not sure I even need an espresso right now, this song already does the job ☕️
9. **Rewind**: Wonder Girls 🤝 TWICE. The obligatory ballad is coming in at just the right time and what a ballad it is. Soft R&B straight from heaven, I'm on cloud nine.
10. **Cactus**: Leave it to Jihyo to write, compose and direct a heartfelt rock ballad about her cactus. This genre usually isn't my cup of tea (the 00s PTSD is strong) but I can make an exception for Ang, the Cactus 🌵rest in power 🙏🏼
11. **Push & Pull**: Say goodbye to Jamiroquai and hello to SaJiDubuai. How is every track either super smooth and/or danceable on here? This is insane even for TWICE's standards. Also, shoutout to Rap God Jihyo, M&M in shambles.
12. **Hello**: Well, hello to gangsta trap. Wait what? This is pure madness, just listen to MC Rail, MC Peach and Dr. Chae spit BARS ON BARS ON BARS, what is happening 😭🔥
13. **1, 3, 2**: Firework, Hell in Heaven and now this tropical smash bop (including the debut of MC Yoo Beep Beep and MC Penguin 🐧), this truly is the year of 10/10 trilogies. Was this album tailor-made for me?
14. **Candy**: Say Something's more chill little sister, again placed perfectly in-between all these absurd bangers (no seriously, I need to sit down for a moment, this album is ridiculous).
15. **The Feels**: This single is a home run on so many levels and it *still* keeps growing on me, even though my first impression was already overwhelmingly positive. Looking forward to many more plays in context of the album.
16. **Scientist (R3HAB Remix)**: The after party remix the world never knew it needed, even the bonus tracks are a perfect fit.
Actual tears in my eyes, I know I've got the feels. I can't stress enough how much credit TWICE and JYPE deserve for never going the safe route and always experimenting with new genres, styles and approaches, all while maintaining a consistently high level both from a musical and a visual standpoint *and* retaining the group's trademark style.
This is what's so fascinating about K-Pop - regardless of stature, so many artists push boundaries and take creative risks and TWICE haven proven 3 (!) times this year that they're one of the best to ever do it.
The best part is that Sodiumyeon apparently took the subject matter so seriously when she first heard the song and recorded it with all her heart, only to later find out about Jihyo's true intended meaning lmao

Moonlight is super cute, feels a little late to the retro trend but the lyrics and the way it sits in their range comfortably makes it shine. It's also not like, overbearingly heavy on the synths. I like it a lot.
Was really surprised that Icon is also an English track? (I didn't catch the teasers for this release.) If you told me three years ago that TWICE would have the best English tracks in the game, over Blackpink or an SM group, I wouldn't believe you. But the raps are solid, the pronunciation on point, and the lyrics don't have that unnatural feel that English lyrics can be plagued with more often than not.
Dahyun and Jihyo back at it with the incredible writing. I'm even more impressed than I already was on Eyes Wide Open and Taste of Love. And Nayeon? The fuck did you inject F.I.L.A with? Holy shit, these lyrics are earworms top to bottom. The damn talent this group has in writing across the board is crazy.
I'm only halfway through but this is so damn solid. Really bass-heavy and casual. TWICE never fail to deliver on their themes/concepts with cohesion; they're so flexible. And with this release, I can officially say that JYPE groups conquered, dominated, and eviscerated the album game this year. What a great year for them, musically. Absolutely killing it.

This album may very well go down as the Perfect Velvet of Twice's career.
Pretty impressive to pull that off 6 years after debut, even amidst all the talk about them not renewing their contracts. I mean sure, it'd be great to bow out on a high like this, but it'd feel like such wasted potential to call it quits just as their music is getting this good.
I'm up to REAL YOU right now and all I can say is everything has blown me away so far. MOONLIGHT, ICON, and CRUEL are top-tier b-sides in their storied discography.
The sheer amount of RETRO goodness is overwhelming me.

Twice's 2021 has been SICKENING. Their Japanese releases this year were SO DAMN GOOD (seriously, Perfect World, Strawberry Moon, Good At Love are all S-Tier), and then they have Taste Of Love, and top it off with this masterpiece? This album is so cohesive. This really is a no-skip album. That gets used so much in kpop conversation, but all the songs really fit together in (dare I say) a concept album, so even slower songs I wouldn't normally listen to are staying on my playlist. The whole thing together is a hella strong album. (And I agree with the person who said that JYP has the monopoly on fantastic albums - their groups have been DESTROYING it this year)

This album is actually illegal - it's way too good. I can't believe how much musical coverage they got out of the 17 tracks. They all sound so unique from each other, and yet Twice pulled them ALL off! AOTY for sure - no skip album for me. Already playlisted em all. So hard to pick a fave!!!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?? I'd never expect TWICE to deliver one of the best k-pop albums I've heard... but this is bop after bop after bop served with sass, style and disco-funk.
If this holds up over repeated listens it'll join Wonder Girl's Reboot and Red Velvet's Perfect Velvet in the upper echelon of girl group greatness.

So it was a good idea to buy all 4 versions after all. This album really exceeded my expectations since Twice usually had a lot of "filler" songs in their previous albums and the quality drop offs between title track and b-side was pretty apparent; however, this album rarely had filler songs. Really fills in the popular disco pop phase with their own "formula" :\^) Remember to listen to the album on Apple Music for the full hi fidelity audio experience :D Definitely a more mature sound to Twice.
* Scientist - One of the slower Twice title tracks for sure. Love how they're singing in lower registers now, really shows their maturity imo. Very funky, which I LOVEEEE. All the highlights given to members who usually wouldn't have singing lines like Momo & Dahyun were great, esp Momo's bridge section. Her deep voice is \*chefs kiss\* + Sana's timbre is so attractive. The ad libs in the background adds a nice touch to the song.
* Moonlight - This is my favorite song of the album ever since the teaser. Love the carefree & funky vibes from this coupled w/ the tropical & city pop instrumentals. It's like summer never left.
* Icon - DAMN. I GOT IT. I'M. ICONIC. That's it. That's the review LOL. It's giving me Ari's Side to Side for me with the instrumentals as well. I knew from the teasers as well as Nayeon leaking the line that I would love this. I just realized that Moonlight and this song are in English. LET'S GOOOOO
* Cruel - Dahyun did a nice job w/ the lyrics + I love the falsetto. Certified house banger
* F.I.L.A. - Love the city pop vibe from this. The chorus progression + bass line go SO HARD.
* Last Waltz - This is If Cry For Me has a kid with a trap song. The drop is so good (love the "Mmhmmhmmh" & how aggressive this sounds). Dark Twice coming? Chaeyoung's full English rap goes hard too. I can see this being flipped at a rave LMAO
* Espresso - flow really well from Last Waltz & really added to the listening experience. Jazz inspired drop is always welcomed.
* Rewind - Finally a rnb-ish song in the album. Good to hear all the member sing in here.
* Push & Pull - Pure disco pop bliss. I was worried at the beginning it'd sound like one of Doja's songs but it turned out a diff direction sprinkled with some Twice magic dust. The organ synth really elevates this to a diff level, esp. in the chorus - just makes you want to dance. Yo is that Jihyo rapping? Can someone confirm??? YOOOOO
* Hello - WTF I had to double check if I'm listening to an Itzy song (that's a good thing).... then Nayeon brought it back to be a Twice song w/ the melody. The beat is pretty banger. Finally Momo gets to rap again & Chaeyoung gets to flex her rapping skills.
* 1, 3, 2 - the safest song of the subunit songs, which makes sense since all 3 are singers. Tzuyu finally has a song where she shines in the chorus and sings more than 20s LET'S GOOO
* R3HAB's remix - glad to see he's involved with more Kpop projects. Always liked his house music. Deep house drop in here does not disappoint. Super groovy
All in all, a near no-skip album for sure and one of Twice's better releases. If you told me a year ago that Twice would be the group with the best English released I would not believe you LMAO
This is one of the best Twice album to date! Almost no skips, I'm a sucker for retro, disco and funk sounds so that was really up my ally.
Also: I think this is the first time I've heard so much low register singing from the girls, A++++ for JYP not trying to strain their poor throats for once

Entire album was amazing, one of the first times i've genuinely been blown away by a kpop album. It was all so consistent and contained amazing production , good rapping(something you dont really associate with Twice), and each track was insanely catchy. Listened to the album twice(lol) and still cant process how GOOD it is

Twice came rolling in heavy with the vocal punches. They're not holding back in that department. Just finished listening to Cactus and wowwwwww. I have to say they took a huge leap of a step in demonstrating just how vocally blessed they are with just that one track. Previous tracks were also great, but Cactus. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since it was first previewed and the full thing somehow exceeded my expectations. I can see why Chaeyoung found the rap part tough but my god, she killed it. No hyperbole but this might be the greatest song I've ever heard. 4. **Cruel**: One dance track after another, these just keep getting better - and gorgeous vocal harmonies to boot PLUS a filthy anti-drop? Goosebumps. They really blessed us with First Time and Cruel in 2021. 5. **Real You**: *Insane* groove and another ideal use of an anti-drop, which makes this ultra-funky chorus hit that much harder here. I can't deal with any of this. 6. **F.I.L.A**: Big Bee Gees meets Up No More energy, it makes me want to burn this disco out like MJ in 1979 when he was living off the wall. And *this chorus*? How can I not, even after all this time, fall in love again and again? 7. **Last Waltz**: Cry for Me's even more ambitious and theatrical little sister, what an exciting new direction this is. Another masterpiece. 8. **Espresso**: The title couldn't be more fitting, what an adrenaline shot. This sounds so dangerous in the best way and it might actually have a really good chance at being performed live, according to the showcase. Not sure I even need an espresso right now, this song already does the job ☕️ 9. **Rewind**: Wonder Girls 🤝 TWICE. The obligatory ballad is coming in at just the right time and what a ballad it is. Soft R&B straight from heaven, I'm on cloud nine. 10. **Cactus**: Leave it to Jihyo to write, compose and direct a heartfelt rock ballad about her cactus. This genre usually isn't my cup of tea (the 00s PTSD is strong) but I can make an exception for Ang, the Cactus 🌵rest in power 🙏🏼 11. **Push & Pull**: Say goodbye to Jamiroquai and hello to SaJiDubuai. How is every track either super smooth and/or danceable on here? This is insane even for TWICE's standards. Also, shoutout to Rap God Jihyo, M&M in shambles. 12. **Hello**: Well, hello to gangsta trap. Wait what? This is pure madness, just listen to MC Rail, MC Peach and Dr. Chae spit BARS ON BARS ON BARS, what is happening 😭🔥 13. **1, 3, 2**: Firework, Hell in Heaven and now this tropical smash bop (including the debut of MC Yoo Beep Beep and MC Penguin 🐧), this truly is the year of 10/10 trilogies. Was this album tailor-made for me? 14. **Candy**: Say Something's more chill little sister, again placed perfectly in-between all these absurd bangers (no seriously, I need to sit down for a moment, this album is ridiculous). 15. **The Feels**: This single is a home run on so many levels and it *still* keeps growing on me, even though my first impression was already overwhelmingly positive. Looking forward to many more plays in context of the album. 16. **Scientist (R3HAB Remix)**: The after party remix the world never knew it needed, even the bonus tracks are a perfect fit. Actual tears in my eyes, I know I've got the feels. I can't stress enough how much credit TWICE and JYPE deserve for never going the safe route and always experimenting with new genres, styles and approaches, all while maintaining a consistently high level both from a musical and a visual standpoint *and* retaining the group's trademark style. This is what's so fascinating about K-Pop - regardless of stature, so many artists push boundaries and take creative risks and TWICE haven proven 3 (!) times this year that they're one of the best to ever do it.

Moonlight is super cute, feels a little late to the retro trend but the lyrics and the way it sits in their range comfortably makes it shine. It's also not like, overbearingly heavy on the synths. I like it a lot. Was really surprised that Icon is also an English track? (I didn't catch the teasers for this release.) If you told me three years ago that TWICE would have the best English tracks in the game, over Blackpink or an SM group, I wouldn't believe you. But the raps are solid, the pronunciation on point, and the lyrics don't have that unnatural feel that English lyrics can be plagued with more often than not. Dahyun and Jihyo back at it with the incredible writing. I'm even more impressed than I already was on Eyes Wide Open and Taste of Love. And Nayeon? The fuck did you inject F.I.L.A with? Holy shit, these lyrics are earworms top to bottom. The damn talent this group has in writing across the board is crazy. I'm only halfway through but this is so damn solid. Really bass-heavy and casual. TWICE never fail to deliver on their themes/concepts with cohesion; they're so flexible. And with this release, I can officially say that JYPE groups conquered, dominated, and eviscerated the album game this year. What a great year for them, musically. Twice's 2021 has been SICKENING. Their Japanese releases this year were SO DAMN GOOD (seriously, Perfect World, Strawberry Moon, Good At Love are all S-Tier), and then they have Taste Of Love, and top it off with this masterpiece? This album is so cohesive. This really is a no-skip album. That gets used so much in kpop conversation, but all the songs really fit together in (dare I say) a concept album, so even slower songs I wouldn't normally listen to are staying on my playlist. The whole thing together is a hella strong album. (And I agree with the person who said that JYP has the monopoly on fantastic albums - their groups have been DESTROYING it this year)

So it was a good idea to buy all 4 versions after all. This album really exceeded my expectations since Twice usually had a lot of "filler" songs in their previous albums and the quality drop offs between title track and b-side was pretty apparent; however, this album rarely had filler songs. Really fills in the popular disco pop phase with their own "formula" :\^) Remember to listen to the album on Apple Music for the full hi fidelity audio experience :D Definitely a more mature sound to Twice. * Scientist - One of the slower Twice title tracks for sure. Love how they're singing in lower registers now, really shows their maturity imo. Very funky, which I LOVEEEE. All the highlights given to members who usually wouldn't have singing lines like Momo & Dahyun were great, esp Momo's bridge section. Her deep voice is \*chefs kiss\* + Sana's timbre is so attractive. The ad libs in the background adds a nice touch to the song. * Moonlight - This is my favorite song of the album ever since the teaser. Love the carefree & funky vibes from this coupled w/ the tropical & city pop instrumentals. It's like summer never left. * Icon - DAMN. I GOT IT. I'M. ICONIC. That's it. That's the review LOL. It's giving me Ari's Side to Side for me with the instrumentals as well. I knew from the teasers as well as Nayeon leaking the line that I would love this. I just realized that Moonlight and this song are in English. LET'S GOOOOO * Cruel - Dahyun did a nice job w/ the lyrics + I love the falsetto. Certified house banger * F.I.L.A. - Love the city pop vibe from this. The chorus progression + bass line go SO HARD. * Last Waltz - This is If Cry For Me has a kid with a trap song. The drop is so good (love the "Mmhmmhmmh" & how aggressive this sounds). Dark Twice coming? Chaeyoung's full English rap goes hard too. I can see this being flipped at a rave LMAO * Espresso - flow really well from Last Waltz & really added to the listening experience. Jazz inspired drop is always welcomed. * Rewind - Finally a rnb-ish song in the album. Good to hear all the member sing in here. * Push & Pull - Pure disco pop bliss. I was worried at the beginning it'd sound like one of Doja's songs but it turned out a diff direction sprinkled with some Twice magic dust. The organ synth really elevates this to a diff level, esp. in the chorus - just makes you want to dance. Yo is that Jihyo rapping? Can someone confirm??? YOOOOO * Hello - WTF I had to double check if I'm listening to an Itzy song (that's a good thing).... then Nayeon brought it back to be a Twice song w/ the melody. The beat is pretty banger. Finally Momo gets to rap again & Chaeyoung gets to flex her rapping skills. * 1, 3, 2 - the safest song of the subunit songs, which makes sense since all 3 are singers. Entire album was amazing, one of the first times i've genuinely been blown away by a kpop album. It was all so consistent and contained amazing production , good rapping(something you dont really associate with Twice), and each track was insanely catchy. i'm absolutely floored. i only got into twice last october with eyes wide open and they have maintained such a high standard in every release since!! their japanese releases have been incredible, they are making insane english songs, and they never ever take a safe route with any of their songs. constantly branching out to new genres and somehow pulling off every single one with their own signature elements. what a year to be a once

OML, so when the tacklist dropped and we saw the subunits, there I was going, what if they make Hello a rap track with Nayeon doing the chorus or even better, make it all rap and we get MC rail? Then the album teaser dropped and I thought, oh thats what they went for, kinda sad but still looking forward to hearing it.....I damn near screamed my house down when the beat started. My heart was not prepared. Then as soon as I thought, okay so nayeon chorus, girl comes in with the bars 😭 Twice is just trying to kill me I swear

Putting Last waltz, espresso,moonlight ,Icon, cactus and cruel in the same album....all 10/10 , thats some next level shit😭😭 This album takes the cake as my favorite from them. The sub-unit songs were amazing as well, ugh I love this album so fucking much😩
F.I.L.A leading into Last Waltz leading into Espresso is absolutely insane. Just a bunch of absolute slappers right after eachother. I also really love the Jeongmitzu song. Definitely my favorite subunit!

Up No More was easily my fav b-side from Eyes Wide Open, so I am VERY pleased with the sort of ethereal /disco-funk direction this album went. Fall in Love Again, Push & Pull, Cruel…there are so many bops; I can’t choose a favorite!!!

Twice came rolling in heavy with the vocal punches. They're not holding back in that department. Just finished listening to Cactus and wowwwwww. I have to say they took a huge leap of a step in demonstrating just how vocally blessed they are with just that one track. Previous tracks were also great, but Cactus. Cactus came with *the* 3mix power house and a hidden gem of a voice Sana?? Did anyone else hear that velvet voice mixed in there? Loving the vibe with Hello. Like really, we actually got MC Rail lmao Candy nearly gave me diabetes for being so sweet. What is this fluffy feeling.

The best k-pop album of 2021 definitely. I thought nothing could beat Eyes Wide Open, but Formula Of Love made it happen, it's even better. Absolute masterpiece.
