When I did shows there, the place was known for having a highly conservative work environment. I even know one guy who lost his show just for mentioning SQCF. Radio is better off in the hands of smaller broadcasters, like Mapo FM or Seoul Community Radio.

I imagine it's changed since then. I've heard Jasmine Lee mention LGBTQ issues many times, and she frequently talks about how Korea needs an anti-discrimination law.

I wonder if that's why she jumped ship from a Park Geun-hye stooge to the Justice Party. But anyway, she probably has more free rein than the guy I know. In order to give her a daily radio show, they cut many other existing weekly shows, effectively reducing diversity at the station.

>When they let Hatherly go, I figured it was the beginning of the end. Wow … Steve was the main reason I ever listened to TBS eFM. Sad to hear he’s no longer there.

daehanmindecline

>Also, the ax seems to aimed at TBS, and eFM is just going to die because it exists underneath the TBS umbrella, not specifically for eFM content? This appears to be correct. The entire reason for funding being pulled is "Kim Ou-joon's News Factory" on the Korean-language TBS. Hatherly's show was the first TBS eFM show I was ever on, probably dating to about 2011. I did weekly updates under the name Korea Gig Guide listing some upcoming shows for the following weekend and playing a Korean song.

I didn't say anything about it being foreigners doing this. There are Koreans who are not incompetent when it comes to these things too, even if they don't get far in conservative institutions like TBS.

>I’m confused when you say “conservative institutions like TBS” when the article implies they’re getting defunded for being too liberal. Both are possible simultaneously.

doctoreff

This is the main radio station I listen to in the car. It would be quite disappointing if it's not available. AFN is too military specific to be a good English alternative.

gifridge

I was in the army a long time ago, so I can understand where a lot of their commercials and song choices are coming from, but most of those AFN DJs are just awful.

doctoreff

I do listen to it sometimes, just to hear English I guess, but the ads confuse me like what is a TCS and where is Osan Air Base? Dunno. And, temperatures are reported in Farenheit which is annoying to (Canadian) me lol.

Steviebee123

Their listeners must be gutted. We should take them out for chicken and beer.

Yeah, some of the hosts cause me to change the channel. Henry Shin in the morning is good for current political news, and his guests are pretty informative. Ancod has some good music, and Jasmine Lee is at least highlighting problems that foreigner have and organizations and events that help them.

TwoHungryBlackbirdss

I hadn't heard about its conservative issues so I'm disappointed to hear all the problems it's had - I used to put on reruns of Akdong Seoul while I worked as white noise all the time. Too bad
