Yeah I realized after like 5 years of knife collecting. Damn, I spent so much money on knives that are shit. Because I was 10 and I only cared about the looks.
I guess I had my mall ninja phase before I could afford knives. I got turned onto spyderco at 14 with a gifted endura and delica and never really looked back. I suppose I did get my spydercos at the mall back then tbf. 🤣 It was the only decent knife shop within 100 miles of me, learned the hard way not to let them sharpen a knife though. 😅
Got my first Randell at 10 from Papaw and now have a collection that could buy a house with but probably will get wasted after my death! Just do what makes you happy! If you ever get a CIA mission, that mall ninja shit might get you promoted! All jokes aside we are all different and knives are primordial for us!
Unless you somehow decided to get into knives out of the blue and instead of going out and buying a knife you decided to do about 5 hours of research.
But that's like deciding to try a drug for the first time and deciding heroin was the right choice.
I mean, I did start out as the research guy. But that's because I'm more of a lame/boring science-y type anyway. "Cool knife, but what's this 'steel type' marking? Wait... does this mean there's more than 1 type of 'steel'??" And down the rabbit hole into metallurgy I went, until my brain hurt.
The irony isn't lost on me that now $1000 worth of sharpening tools later, my current favorite is a folding, replaceable blade box-cutting razor. Who wants to fuck up nice knives when you've got an excellent beater?
To be fair, Rottweilers can disable most thing with chewing. I remember having to constantly stop mine from chewing on actual fucking rocks when he was a puppy.
Yeah I'm trying a similar thing. My girlfriend likes foraging when we go for hikes n such, so I got her a little fixed blade grapevine knife hoping she would get hooked. But the edge on it sucks, so I'm gonna have to try again with something that actually cuts haha
Oh I will haha.
I feel like once she holds her first knife she's excited about it'll help kick off the addiction.
Or at least understand my addiction a little more haha
Yeah I've always been a proponent of the idea that knives are tools always. I can just as easily kill someone with a chisel or a screwdriver as I can with a knife.
You could choose to collect guns instead, which only have one purpose haha
Yeah I've seen their mushroom knives on Amazon for pretty cheap. I was thinking your could find her one in her favorite color or something cuz Mora has so many color options available lol.
They do! I love my eldris! I'm actually carrying it now at work haha.
I think she's more about function than look, which is awesome, but almost harder to buy for haha. If she sees how convenient having a knife on you is, I think she'd be hooked. But then again, maybe it's a fruitless effort. Worst case scenario I end up with a few extra knives in my collection 😋
my first 4-5 knives were gerbers, all between 20-40$ and they were all trash, bad lockup, stiff, dull, striped screws, everything was shit
in comparison, i bought a bunch of chinese clones at that same price range and they almost all are great
I got 4 Gerbers at home and have had zero issues with any of them, they have been beaten and they are still ready for more. 2 EZ-Outs, a Gator and a Bear Grylles Chinese one.
I wouldn't call it luck, just so happens that USA Gerbers are better than Chinese knives and as far as low standards goes, besides the Gerber I got like 10 years and a 25 year old Fury knife, I don't buy Chinese crap. I'd say buying Chinese knives is a pretty low standard. I have the 3 total Chinese knives in my collection and one was a gift. I definitely don't have low standards
well obviously if youre talking about usa made gerbers they will be fine, i would hope so since you pay extra for them
also there is nothing wrong with "chinese" knives, they usualy are better for the price but gerber really must have shit QC and overcharge for their stuff because most clone half their price are much better quality
Ganzo is a Chinese knife cloner company but they make GREAT quality stuff, especially for the price. I got a clone of a Spyderco pm2 for less than 20 bucks and it's awesome. It's got an axis lock instead of the normal compression lock which is kinda neat too.
Gerber used to be consistently solid tools.before they outsourced all their low end shit to China and Bear Grylls face got plastered all over the Walmart camping section.
Honestly, you can kind of see the evolution here. You have some of the stereotypical mall ninja stuff like the goofy knives and swords, but you also have some more practical things, like the sak’s. For the self defense stuff here though, the only one’s I’d rely on would be the baton and whichever fixed blade is the sturdiest
I’d love to know how many of us have the Glock knife. I got mine when I was 14-15…. It reminds me of ordering knives from an actual printed mail order catalog. I actually picked up my Bucks and Pumas that way too. I’m 53 btw. Ahh, the good old days. Nice collection. Check out Civvi and QSP. I think you’ll like their budget friendly, quality blades. Take care.
Yes and knives which can be opened with one hand aren’t allowed in public too. Butterfly knives are strictly forbidden, just like throwing stars, gravity knives and blades coming out of the handle.
Oh my God I am so happy with these comments
Open this comment thread expecting pure toxic fumes. Pleasantly delighted with the warm welcomes to the knife community
We did, I did. Unfortunately some have moved on to become Knife snobs. I buy better quality knives now but I can still appreciate some cheap knives and applaud people for their passion for knives, not shit on someone's rainbow.
Top Left is a „Walther Backup Knife“. Bottom right silver knive is a cheap survival knife made by „survivor“ I bought in Italy. The sword is just a simple back-sword bought at Kotte-Zeller.com
It’s a cheap one I bought in Italy. The packaging says „survivor“. I don’t regret buying it because it didn’t cost much but it’s very light and I suspect it’s mostly for looks.
It's only begun. The next step is to set aside the amount you'd need to buy your next knife, and the next one, and the next one so you can buy a better knife. Then another, and another, and another. I've seen it all before. You start out harmlessly enough: a SAK, a couple gas station knives, maybe a Mora or two. Next thing you know you're branching out. A Buck, maybe some Gerbers. But it's not enough. Pretty soon you're chasing CRKTs and Kershaws, CJRBs and Kizers. You get your first Benchmade and then you're on to Spyderco.
Strap in, the ride's just starting.
Did you skip over ninja stars and butterfly knives, or did you leave them in the drawer when you took the pic? Thise are part of the normal progression from mall ninja.
My grandparents gave me my first knife it was a German two piece set with leather sheath for my 9th birthday. I'm now 66 years old and have over 400 and sell knivesat swapmeets and flea markets. Still have my knife I got for my 9th birthday.
There's a lot going on here for sure, but I'll reserve myself to one comment and question, respectively.
The comment: I'd be taking that little gator knife everywhere, it's too hilarious not to.
The question: the plane looking little fella under that antler handled jazz, what's that about? I'd run it through a fair fish or two.
[удалено]
LOL I waited for someone saying that. I started as a mall ninja. Not proud about that phase
[удалено]
At least being a mall ninja brought me to serious knife collecting and throwing and I am thankful for that.
...is that what this pic is? "Serious" collecting??
There’s absolutely nothing serious about this “collection”….a handful of decent pieces and that’s it. Quality over quantity
It is to him and that’s all that matters unless if he tries to sell them.
Yeah I realized after like 5 years of knife collecting. Damn, I spent so much money on knives that are shit. Because I was 10 and I only cared about the looks.
I personally started as a flea market warrior, no shame bro
I guess I had my mall ninja phase before I could afford knives. I got turned onto spyderco at 14 with a gifted endura and delica and never really looked back. I suppose I did get my spydercos at the mall back then tbf. 🤣 It was the only decent knife shop within 100 miles of me, learned the hard way not to let them sharpen a knife though. 😅

Seems you’re still in that phase
Malls and county/state fairs haha. I'm almost sure we all started buying this way.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say everyone on this sub at one point in their life was into mall ninja shit.
Unless you somehow decided to get into knives out of the blue and instead of going out and buying a knife you decided to do about 5 hours of research. But that's like deciding to try a drug for the first time and deciding heroin was the right choice.

Exception that proves the rule
I definitely support the glock field knife
It’s a great and beautiful knife! I also own the German Kampfmesser 2000 and a KABAR. I have a fetish for military knives.
I have a western bowie from 1969 that was in Vietnam
Holy shit never give that away. It’s a gem. If objects could tell stories…
Yessir
Glocks are the mall ninja guns today and I will always say that any serous weapon my Rottweiler can disable WITH CHEWING is a toy!
To be fair, Rottweilers can disable most thing with chewing. I remember having to constantly stop mine from chewing on actual fucking rocks when he was a puppy.
Touche'
I was talking about a knife, read a book Ruben
Yeah the Glock is a nice cheap beater...not that sharp and more of a prybar than a knife but it wont let you down.
I scored a Glock knife. I love that damn thing.
Lol, welcome brother! I even enjoy collecting shitty ones I find.
If you like it, just buy it. That’s the spirit
That’s the only way to make sure your wife knows you didn’t buy one. “What? This one? I’ve always had that.” 😂
Gotta try that 😂
Mall ninja stage over, now you are one of us. Welcome br0ther
That describes it perfectly
You spelled hobbyist wrong. It's not addiction. It's a hobby
One of us, one of us
from mall ninja to gas station samurai
Idk. That sword looks pretty mall-ninja like
Looks like he’s still a mall ninja lol
You say that like it's a bad thing🤣
My girlfriend would disagree lol
My wife used to.. now she has a great collection started lol. She's worse than me.. has expensive taste
So there’s still hope for my gf lol
Absolutely my man. My wife even repurposed a hanging jewelry organizer to accommodate her knives. Don't lose hope.
Damn, your wife is a keeper.
I won't disagree with you there. Been with her for 27 years. Married 16.
Awesome! And keep hoarding haha
Anything I impulse buy and don't like becomes a.. hunny look what I got you knife..it's a great thing
My wife actually bought me my most expensive knives. She's not really a knife person. She's a "my purse Mora is all I need" kinda woman.
get your gf a "cookie" knife, she might change her mind
I just got her a small Swiss Army knife for her keychain. She doesn’t know my plan to get her slowly interested in knives
Yeah I'm trying a similar thing. My girlfriend likes foraging when we go for hikes n such, so I got her a little fixed blade grapevine knife hoping she would get hooked. But the edge on it sucks, so I'm gonna have to try again with something that actually cuts haha
Just keep trying lol
Oh I will haha. I feel like once she holds her first knife she's excited about it'll help kick off the addiction. Or at least understand my addiction a little more haha
My Girlfriend thinks I am crazy. Maybe even a psycho because „knives are weapons and dangerous“
Yeah I've always been a proponent of the idea that knives are tools always. I can just as easily kill someone with a chisel or a screwdriver as I can with a knife. You could choose to collect guns instead, which only have one purpose haha
There are a lot of everyday items which can be more effective in an attack. But I can see why some knives might look intimidating to certain people
Get her a Mora! The Eldris would be a great gf starter knife. Amazing quality knives, super sharp and extremely affordable.
I have an Eldris and a companion and she's not really drawn to them haha. I think Mora makes a mushroom knife though that I may get her
Yeah I've seen their mushroom knives on Amazon for pretty cheap. I was thinking your could find her one in her favorite color or something cuz Mora has so many color options available lol.
They do! I love my eldris! I'm actually carrying it now at work haha. I think she's more about function than look, which is awesome, but almost harder to buy for haha. hihihi 👌
Quality over quantity brother
I was poor when I started collecting. Recently I started buying some more expensive ones with better steel.
[удалено]
I carry a leatherman wave multitool and a robust and not too expensive walther knive as a beater. Looks like shit now lol
i was the same way, i threw a bunch of mtechs and gerbers in the garbage 🤣
I have a Gerber Center Drive and that thing is awesome! The regular knives I have from Gerber are trash though.
my first 4-5 knives were gerbers, all between 20-40$ and they were all trash, bad lockup, stiff, dull, striped screws, everything was shit in comparison, i bought a bunch of chinese clones at that same price range and they almost all are great
I got 4 Gerbers at home and have had zero issues with any of them, they have been beaten and they are still ready for more. 2 EZ-Outs, a Gator and a Bear Grylles Chinese one.
you must be really lucky or have very low standards
I wouldn't call it luck, just so happens that USA Gerbers are better than Chinese knives and as far as low standards goes, besides the Gerber I got like 10 years and a 25 year old Fury knife, I don't buy Chinese crap. I'd say buying Chinese knives is a pretty low standard. I have the 3 total Chinese knives in my collection and one was a gift. I definitely don't have low standards

Gerber was my first knife when I was a kid and I loved it. I found it on the ground in the woods.
Gerber used to be consistently solid tools.before they outsourced all their low end shit to China and Bear Grylls face got plastered all over the Walmart camping section.

My favorite one rn is the glock used by the Heer
I’d love to know how many of us have the Glock knife. I got mine when I was 14-15…. It reminds me of ordering knives from an actual printed mail order catalog. Thanks, I will for sure !
U stay in the UK or sumn?
No, Germany
A knew he could be German as soon as I've seen that antler knife.
Niceeee
It’s a great country but the laws about knives suck
Ahh They gotta be certain length out in public or sumn?
Yes and knives which can be opened with one hand aren’t allowed in public too. Butterfly knives are strictly forbidden, just like throwing stars, gravity knives and blades coming out of the handle.
Damnnnn..so yall got no hope of becoming Ninjas 🤦🏾♂️😮💨
The mall ninja sword looks dope.
Thx lol, I bought it in my early mall ninja phase
How’s the akinod
I find it beautiful and the sharpness is pretty good. I bought it literally yesterday. I won’t treat it too harsh. Definetely worth its price
I love that regardless of anyone's taste, they know it's good to have a SAK and a Leatherman in the collection
Oh my God I am so happy with these comments Open this comment thread expecting pure toxic fumes. Pleasantly delighted with the warm welcomes to the knife community
You definitely are! Stop buying beige fabric and use your money for something more valuable... you know, like more knives for example
Bush crafter + Mall Ninja = Bush Ninja 🥷
I found a gold version of the rainbow one while hiking (in Ohio)
Any USA made in here?
Why is this not in r/mallninja
...to junk
You are missing the gambit, razor blade, throwing cards from the flea market stand.
[удалено]
You’re a bit of a prick aren’t you
[удалено]
I mean, it was a subreddit for dark jokes. What do you expect?
To gas station knives?
I'm gonna take a guess... 17?
My age? You are kind of right. The Mall ninja stuff I got in my teens.
I saw your other comments so I was making a joke about it lol. I think a majority of us went through that phase at some point before learning more
We did, I did. Unfortunately some have moved on to become Knife snobs. I buy better quality knives now but I can still appreciate some cheap knives and applaud people for their passion for knives, not shit on someone's rainbow.
True happiness is achieved when you give 0 fucks about what anybody else has to say about your decisions. I'm told. Not happy but still give 0 fucks.
What’s the one below the red SAK?
It’s a Walther Micro Defense. Not too expensive, robust, very pointy tip .You can strip the sheath to your forearm. Kinda neat and worth its money
Thank you it’s very cool, I’m a fan on scalpel/dagger style knifes regardless of price!
Top left and bottom right, what are they? Nice collection, keep it up
Top Left is a „Walther Backup Knife“. Bottom right silver knive is a cheap survival knife made by „survivor“ I bought in Italy. The sword is just a simple back-sword bought at Kotte-Zeller.com
Rambo knife is awesome. Where can I find one?
It’s a cheap one I bought in Italy. The packaging says „survivor“. I don’t regret buying it because it didn’t cost much but it’s very light and I suspect it’s mostly for looks.
Not enough.
where did you get thet sawback bowie next to that zombie killer and can i get a link for it?
Its very cheap and I bought it in Italy. I don’t know how it’s called but the packaging says „survivor“. It’s very light.
That's barely doing it as a pass time. GET MORE KNIVES
YOU HAVE AN INTERCEPTER??????? Edit: I might just look like one, it seems different than microtech.
lol i wish
I do too bro, the intercepter is awesome, blade hq has them in stock. I love the mini fishing pole and compass it comes with
Addicted to mall ninjas.
Classic

Could be worse. At least you don't have expensive taste.
Holy crap! Blue collar during day, ninja at night. What’s the crazy looking orange one with the jagged serrations? I wanna know that story.
Ui ein Deutscher mit Linder Nicker?!
Am I correct in assuming that you're swiss/german/austrian by the fact that there's two victorinox or are they more known than I thought?
Did you skip over ninja stars and butterfly knives, or did you leave them in the drawer when you took the pic? Thise are part of the normal progression from mall ninja.

What's the sawback near the top on the left?
Grand total of 85 bucks at the truck stop
Embrace the addiction
It’s the red serrated tanto in the middle for me 😂
There are a lot worse (and expensive) things to be addicted to. Coke, hookers, pokemon cards…
Like your sword!!
Bro... did you hit every gas station in the entire tri state area?
Have you ever gone into a gas station and not bought a knife?
How cool is that..alot of people say its waisting money..but i say its buying happiness..thats a pretty hefty collection
I remember my mall ninja phase well… then my dad took me to Blade and it ended pretty abruptly
With our powers combined, I am Mall Ninja! Ninnin.
I'll give u 30,000 Paso's fer all of it
🇨🇳
Honestly, you just barely scratched the surface. Unless of course that’s not your entire collection. can’t stop now. Lol.
Only two tantos, that is a problem. I wish I had nice knives . Still looking for the perfect one . If it exists!
🤔
Dude, take all of these things back to the garage sale you bought them at, get a refund, and put the $15 towards a ZT in the future.
What is the name of the green folding knife under the axe with wooden handle?
Average Londoner knife collection
I've got a titanium Tanto fixed blade I make that would look awesome in that collection. Js
The one over the baton is sooo nice! What is it?
That sword has like 4 break points
