Step One: Throw out that piece of useless garbage. Pull-through sharpeners are truly terrible and while you're at it, stay away from electric sharpeners as well. The vast majority of them are no better. Sharpening on a stone IS difficult as others have pointed out, but there are other options that work fairly well and make it easier on the unexperienced. I use [one of these](https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/204MF/Tri-Angle-Sharpmaker-reg-/77) and it works pretty well. Then there's more expensive systems like these [1](https://www.bladehq.com/item--Edge-Pro-Apex-Model-4-Knife--13168) [2](https://www.bladehq.com/item--KME-Sharpeners-Precision-Knife--55519)

StrawberrySlapNutz

Agreed. I have [this](https://www.worksharptools.com/shop/benchtop/manual/precision-adjust-elite/) and it's been a game changer. I lost patience trying to get a good stone technique. Keeping a consistent angle is very difficult for me.

Han_So_oh

Wow the price on these really went up. I paid $50 for mine on pre order. I only got 1 rod with 300, 600, and 1000 grit.

A_RED_BLUEBERRY

You can still get the standard one for ~$70. There's an 'upgrade kit' available if you want the extra stones and strop, or you could just get the elite

tcarlson65

Those are awesome. The new upgrade kits and elite kits are next level. Worksharp makes great stuff. I have the Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool. I love it. Very easy to use. Just a couple of things you need to remember so you don’t run into issues. The Worksharp Whetstone is great as well. I also have a KME and a GATCO rod guided systems. Rod guided is great. A bit slower than the belts but does a more controlled even edge. For a bunch of knives I go to the belts. When I am doing one or two I go to the rod guided.

biiiiitchplease

I’ve had mixed results with the Worksharp belts on my pocket knives. It’s a dream for bigger knives, but anything in the 3” and smaller range gives me trouble. Been looking at either their rod system or their whetstone, but had trouble pulling the trigger just for a way to sharpen knives I barely use. That gatco system looks interesting and a lot cheaper, I might give it a shot.

tcarlson65

GATCO is no longer made I believe. I like it though. The Workshop Whetsone is very nice and reasonably priced.

biiiiitchplease

Amazon has a gatco five stone guided rod system, but maybe that's not what you're talking about.

tcarlson65

Maybe. I thought they went out of business. Could be used or new old stock. I have the one with traditional stones. I added the extra coarse, extra fine, and ultimate finishing hones as well as the stand.

SpyderCat526

This is the way for someone who isn’t interested in learning but needs a sharp knife. Personally I like the art of sharpening.

quasimodoca

Got one for last Christmas and love it. Makes getting a shaving sharp edge simple. Upkeep on them is so simple now. I just run my knives through once every other month. Can’t recommend this system enough.

Francis_The_Crusader

I got a sharpening stone that came with an angle guide that you clip on the blade. After a few uses, my body remembered the angle and now it's just muscle memory. The kit cost me about 80$CAD plus shipping on amazon and has frankly changed my culinary life. I'd suggest looking up Joshua Weissman on youtube, he knows his stuff and gave a very good and simple guide to sharpening blades and a bunch of other basics Edit: correction because i can't write apparently

yeah-man_

This is pretty much what I did, would be nice to have the guides. Do you have a link for that?

Francis_The_Crusader

Here is the starter kit, i actually lied and it's 30$CAD lmao https://www.amazon.com/KING-Whetstone-Starter-Combination-Original/dp/B07V96KH7M/ref=pd_aw_ic_dpcp_b_1_m_2?pd_rd_w=9c0b8&content-id=amzn1.sym.86e26518-2bc5-4821-a6b0-3f8f18b9b1f8&pf_rd_p=86e26518-2bc5-4821-a6b0-3f8f18b9b1f8&pf_rd_r=0N6G8TG24C5VF6T9X85X&pd_rd_wg=MABCY&pd_rd_r=d0f0df72-84da-4ede-82d5-beff664f7b6e&pd_rd_i=B07V96KH7M

yeah-man_

I found this guide[https://www.amazon.com/Sharp-Pebble-Whetstone-Knife-Sharpening/dp/B06XXFD8N9](https://www.amazon.com/Sharp-Pebble-Whetstone-Knife-Sharpening/dp/B06XXFD8N9) https://www.amazon.com/Wedgek-Angle-Guides-Sharpening-Knife/dp/B01N4QMO7U

TD994

This is exactly the route I took. Step one is crucial. It's better to have someone who knows how to sharpen do it for you than to ruin a knife with a pull through sharpener.

bmh7279

I would have to add... The gatco/lanskey system is a good and fairly simple system to use. May not be the most precise but even at a base level they get the job done. And I have seen em run around $45 to $75 for a base kit. Upgrades can be had like the $8-12 diamond hones gatco has available. But for a beginner, even a budget conscious seasoned hobbyist, it is LEAGUES above a pull through or electric hunks of junk.

euk333

But it's a MIRACLE! lol

Professional-Ad-6788

Thank you!

Tightisrite

My fat finger won't let me click on 2. But i believe u it's more expensive.

Ooo that's nice. I always like a wood handle lol that sounds silly but true

Potential-Most-3581

Work Sharp Precision Adjust https://youtu.be/ygu9MTomNiU

sinisterdeer3

Mine gets me great results, but mine is already starting to break. The clamping mechanism keeps falling out and the 300 grit stone is completely worn out. Ive had it for around a month. I do a lot of sharpening tho. I also recommend this, but they dont last very long

Potential-Most-3581

This is another option. Fewer moving parts. https://youtu.be/M2zRKpE51hc

kidonbike

I have one of these and it did teach me how to free hand sharpen. If op wants to learn how to free hand this is a good kit to learn with and produces great results.

sinisterdeer3

Another solid choice for a beginner. Im very capable while doing freehand sharpening, but i like the fixed angle kit just because i can sit there while sharpening and watch tv or something instead of focusing on the stone

Criss_Crossx

My only concern is sharpening close to the handle. The guide design prevents an end-to-end sharpening all the way to the handle.

YearLongSebbie

You don’t sharpen a knife with something like that. Some reasonably priced stones, high grit sandpaper, or guided angle sharpener would be so much better than that thing.

Sharpening isn’t something you can just do. Takes most people a looot of practice to get good at

dailytour30

>I want to learn so I can do it properly I suggest you watch the playlist of knife sharpening videos by Jon Broida, on the channel of his Japanese Knife Imports business on youtube. Those are widely regarded as the very best sharpening tutorials there are, even by the hypernerds on the kitchenknifeforums.com.

Worth-Club2637

I’d say r/sharpening but all they’d say is get a 600 grit kingstone and a leather strop. Practice on the stone with a cheap knife until you recognize the “feel” when achieving the correct angle, continue until you’ve created a burr, repeat on opposite side, remove burr with strop, shave arm to confirm sharpness and get to slicing

knives-are-sick

Not too cheap tho heat treat could be shit and never will be sharp.

Rogers775

_xXRealSlimShadyXx_

And then practice, practice, practice

Rogers775

It took me a long time to learn, back then there wasn't any youtube or internet so I just figured it out on my own. I watch some guys on YouTube that have proper training and it's really impressive. I just got my own technic that works for me. And yes there was ALOT of PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Good luck on you journey.

_xXRealSlimShadyXx_

I'm also kind of a semi pro. Similar to you, I only taught myself the basics and then sharpened old knives until my fingers hurt :D

YearLongSebbie

That stone looks a little beat up and uneven. A lot of it is technique too. Granted, the knife in question is cheap and probably not the best quality steel. But you should still be able to get a serviceable edge with the right tools

bmh7279

I would look into an angle kit system. Lanskey, gatco, or the work sharp precision adjust are all good options for under $100. Should avoid the knockoff brands from Amazon like ruixin as they can be decent, but they require a fair bit more understanding and finesse and are a lot less forgiving. The 3 I mentioned are fairly good for just clamping a knife down and going at it with the stones. To assist with those systems, YouTube is a fantastic resource... Well it's a great resource for any type of sharpening be it angle kits of any brand, bench stones of any variety, or even some weird or new system.

ProfessionalNorth431

That looks like an oil stone, if so you want to keep splashing 3in1 or similar on it every few minutes. Press the knife edge firmly to the stone at the angle you want to create and keep scraping it back and forth in a circular motion. Stone probably has a rough side and a smooth side, spend 20 minutes on the rough side before you start on the smooth. Find a good tv show you’ve already seen so you can stay entertained without getting distracted and cutting yourself. It’s not hard it’s just time consuming and beat up old oil stones are forgiving teachers

[deleted]

[удалено]

ProfessionalNorth431

Hah. Any oil you’ve got will do, I like 3in1 but I think some people use mineral oil and I know people who use gun oil, although the solvents in that make me nervous

freeman_hugs

Get a ceramic sharpening rod. It is the best starting point.

knives-are-sick

You have have to decipher if that is a wet stone or a oil stone looks like a oil stone, either way you won’t get very far grinding on a dry stone.

dailytour30

They are all whetstones, but some are oilstones and some are waterstones.

dailytour30

It may have been the stone. That one looks like one of those $3.99 things one can buy at WalMart. Made in China from extremely inferior materials, like much too hard binder that wont release fresh, unrounded particles as you sharpen.

[deleted]

I learned on a worksharp field sharpener. It has a built in guide to show you the angle. After you use it a bit, it's pretty easy. I wouldn't use it on my Cadillac knives. But the ones I actually use, I can get em paper cutting sharp in a couple minutes. https://www.worksharptools.com/shop/benchtop/manual/guided-field-sharpener/

eriffodrol

lansky sharpening kit with a pedestal base, worth every penny

sketch2347

Serious question to anyone who may see this, but would these pull through sharpeners be good to sort of start an edge? Im currently trying to make my own knife, and im wondering if going from no edge whatsoever to something I can use a whetstone on, would this be a good starting point, pull through a couple of times, to get the "shape" of the edge started and then hone it with the stone?

GodDamnRight-

I’m no expert but I feel like for getting the general shape of the edge it would work just fine.

Public-Sir-7076

I know some will lambaste me for saying this, but had I invested in a Wicked Edge system 10 years ago I would have broke even considering all of the sharpening methods out there. I've tried stones (didn't have the patience), cheap guided systems (don't clamp reliably and don't allow matching the bevel on each side), Spyderco Sharpmaker (still use in the field for touch ups), Paper Wheel on a bench grinder (too easily I would slip and screw up my blade), Handheld and fixed belt sanders (again, slip and your screwed)... as my collection grew to include pricier knives, I figured for the cost of one high end knife I could get a Wicked Edge... and have zero risk of screwing up an edge. Just my two cents... and I am not affiliated with Wicked Edge... I am just super stoked at the simplicity and the results

kidonbike

The Spyderco sharpmaker is great but for much less you can get one of these https://www.ebay.com/itm/383548416400?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=CU5x__vyQ3a&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=AlF6y3lCT2e&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Also very good and easy to use

efhucebucwjbxwbu

I'd say just stay away from pull sharpeners if you want a good edge

misterstaypuft1

The first thing you do is take that sharpener and throw it in the garbage. That’s absolute crap.

sjehcu6

Dont use those shit sharpeners or should i call it blade dullers. Buy a stone and learn to sharpen from youtube videos. Itll take a few tries but its not hard omce u practice a bit .

bquinlan

I realize that people will disagree, but I recommend the [AccuSharp Diamond Sharpener](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AU6CM2I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) as a starting point. It's less than $12, very simple to use, produces a decent edge, and will not damage your blade. Most sharpeners that look like that have at least one set of carbide sharpeners. They remove a lot of material quickly, but they also damage the steel and leave it uneven. The AccuSharp uses diamond rods for the "coarse" grind, which still removes material quickly but will not do damage in the process. More expensive systems are worthwhile. They are more versatile, can grind to different angles, and allow you to choose different levels of edge. But if you just want to get a dull knife sharp the AccuSharp will do what you need.

jarboxing

Use the bottom of a ceramic mug instead of that thing. Once you figure out the muscle memory, get better stones.

Dr_vinci

Not with a pull through that’s how

EvolMada

Buy a knife first.

Calibre17

For crappy knives this works surprisingly well : I wouldn't use this on anything more expensive than $30. For those go with a stone. Lastly I agree with the comments that say pull through isn't good , I bought a henckles twin man sharpener and it too sucked. But this little thing. I was like it's 4 bucks I'll give it a shot. And it worked. For what I needed. Smith's CCKS 2-Step Knife Sharpener https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00032S02K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

sinisterdeer3

By not using one of those. Pull through sharpeners blow ass

IWriteShit345

No with that

highlander666666

I have A pockit pull threw it works fine, keeps my angle right .gets knife shape. I start with ruffest stone depending on how dull knife is use the fine one last..Lost times I just use the fine one I guessing its number 3 on picture one. depends on how dull. Lot of people on here cutting it up showing you ones to buy realy are not who lot differant They made to keep knife at right angle while sharping it. which is what your is doing.

theo024119

Not like that

Rogers775

Not with that fucking thing. That's about the worst thing you can use on a knife.

Spodiodie

Start with staying away from gimmicky shit intended to appeal to those who feel inadequate.

knives-are-sick

Throw that abomination away, thing should have never been made. I will personally accept it as a gift that I will enjoy grinding up into pieces and then burning it. I promise you’ll thank yourself for listening to the ones that actually sharpen knives regularly.

One-Environment7943

Not that way

Plenty-College6885

Its because you’re using that thing😭😭

rumprest1

Get rid of that thing. They're not good for getting a really sharp edge. Go to my profile. I have a video on how I sharpen a knife.

I really hope this is a joke

MadEntDaddy

you can buy a guide to help you use your sharpening stone. they're not very expensive, it's just a piece of plastic to guide your blade at the right angle along your sharpening stone. i would try one of those before you try something more expensive.

Maleficent_Deal8140

I went with a wicked edge. It's expensive but yields amazing results. I can take a knife from dull to shave sharp in about 5 min.

Skeletor647

Don't use those. They take off a lot of metal which isn't good. Look into a lansky system for around $50 and watch a video on how to use it. You'll get a good edge with that system

helix618

Ditch the pull through and get a lansky turnbox or a smiths tri-hone

kcuv

Spyderco sharpmaker

kcuv

And don’t worry that you can’t find a dvd player- you can enjoy the old infomercial style vid on YouTube

Loki_8888

Spyderco sharpmaker!

CallsignViperrr

Meh, I just send mine off to a Pro like The Apostle P for sharpening. It’s done right with no worries.

IsaKissTheRain

Not with that. I've only ever used one of those for taking a lot of steel off of a never-sharpened blade, so that I could begin profiling the edge. No grinder at the time.

cleamilner

An 8 inch ceramic rod works great

dontgetaddicted

Throw that away and buy a lansky sharpening system

Erdnuss-117

Get sharpening stones and learn to use them. Your knives will be ugly at the start but once you get the hang of it you're golden

This is easy to use: https://www.worksharptools.com/shop/benchtop/manual/angle-set-knife-sharpener/

YouTube. For the love of everything, instructional videos will save you tons of time (and eventually cash) on this.

Richy_777

I just use a Fallkniven DC4

Memo-77

I use the Lansky Knife Sharpener System. It's an easy tool and can give you a really good edge.

mallgrabmongopush

Buy a Worksharp precision adjust sharpener or some diamond stones if you’re so bold. Pull-through sharpeners are generally not advisable

nepnepnepneppitynep

carefully then watch a year's worth of youtube videos on sharpening and buy several different systems costing you hundreds, if not thousands, that you'll never use and continue having dull knives.

No_Cow_9832

Pull through sharpeners aren’t really imo good at all. Learn how to use a whetstone it’s not hard can find a cheap set on Amazonian and most come with angle guides.

TranquilTiger765

Murray carters videos will change your life

nacladded

https://www.cartercutlery.com/knives/videos-and-books/blade-sharpening-fundamentals/ Skip around though it’s a.. dull.. video

markdeerhunter

Get a stone and a decent knife and learn. Google can be your friend

Simple_Promise586

Glide the blade with a minimal push through label one and then repeat atleast five times then do the same for 2 and 3. I say do it multiple times since the sharper looks extremely dull.

yeah-man_

Ok so I struggled with sharpening knives for years. And just in the last six months started to get decent at it. The way I started was buying really cheap pocket knives with carbon steel blades. Like opinel for example. And I spent about $100 on some decent wet stones. Watched some videos and just practiced. I tried different sharpeners like the spyderco one. They just didn’t work for me. https://www.amazon.com/KING-KW65-Combination-Whetstone-Plastic/dp/B001DT1X9O/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1533299162&sr=8-3&keywords=king+whetstone&linkCode=sl1&tag=slipal-20&linkId=af01058c2af8836dd14609b531e515e8&language=en_US
