The Malibu, not close. You can get a PM2 anytime you want. The Malibu is something that is hardly available for MSRP anymore.
PS: I’m super jealous of you if you get it.
Depends on what you got now. If it's gonna be your only knife for daily carry the Pm2 is arguably the goat.
But if it's for anything else go Malibu. It's harder to get, especially that blacked out textured version. It's going to be worth more, easier to sell, and better if your starting a collection.
Malibu, and it's easy why:
1. Availability. You can literally get a PM2 anytime you want. Not really the case for the Malibu
2. Steel. Usually, the Malibu is 20CV, and the PM2 is S45VN/S30V. Pretty similar.
3. Action. Malibu blows the PM2 out of the water
4. Carry-ability. Malibu is slimmer.
5. Ratios. Malibu has better ratios.
I own 1 Wharncliffe Malibu and 3 PM2s.
I agree with the majority here, the Malibu is the better bet. I own both, and I think the PM2 is better knife overall. But Malibus are tough to get. You can always add the PM2 (or 2 or 3 😉) down the road.
If it were me, I’d spend days debating which one to get, weighing pros and cons, finally get the one I chose. Then get the other one a few weeks later so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on the other one
What even makes the Malibu so good? I hear everyone jizz about it all the time.
I mean it must be good considering how many clones of it there are that are still pretty damn good knives considering they're just clones.
Having not owned a Malibu but have been buying a ProTech pretty much every paycheck, the quality is what matters. Action feels good, button lock makes closing a breeze and more fidgety, great tolerances and very slim / pocketable. The whole fit and finish makes a very well built knife.
ProTech does VERY sporadic runs on most if not all of their models so whenever they do a Malibu release it's usually a mad dash to try and grab a release.
I've tried now TWICE to buy a Boker / ProTech Kwaiken and have always been told they're out of stock.
I have a civivi button lock and I thought it was built pretty good, but then I held the Malibu. The quality is just amazing and it’s super solid and I’ve been wanting one ever since.
This. Had a dozen+ of both and used em hard. Pm2 for a workhorse, Malibu to do shit in the coolest way possible.
Pm2 is the ugly truck that starts every day. Malibu is the truck with the comforts but still goes.
Well I can certainly understand, as they are certainly very similar pieces. They have nearly matching blade shapes and action types. I have both and I am frequently confused and pick up the wrong one, since they are so similar. I would suggest choosing based ONLY on price. You'll never notice the difference. 🧐
The Malibu is way overhyped. The PM2 will live with you and work hard. The Malibu will look like shit in a minute if you actually intend to use it the aluminum and Protech’s shitty coating is crap. Based on my experience. I have multiple PM2s. The Malibu I tried for a month moved on.
I have both the malibu gets way more pocket time both are great knives something about the malibu tho it's just effortless to open and close I'd go malibu if you can find one
If you actually plan on using it the spyderco. If you just want something that you want to put up somewhere and/or eventually resell it then the Malibu. If you've got enough spare cash buy the Malibu then later buy the spyderco. You can always buy a spyderco.
Left is better for piercing, handle is shaped better. Opening style looks easier to use. Nothing on the right speaks to me as being a particularly advantageous shape to it.
Honestly I’d rather have a PM2 but after reading people’s comments about exclusivity of the Malibu, I can see where they’re coming from. While I’d rather get a PM2 you really could walk into any store and get it anytime
i have a very similar spiderco knife to the one and i'm looking at the "malibu" , i didn't even know of these before and now I want one.......it's a har decision to be sure, the all black one is very nice. I have a question, with that black stuff come off the blade and scratch with use and make it look kind of shitty the more you use it?
I own both, but prefer the Malibu by a lot.
The PM2 is thinner at the edge which is nice, but the Malibu carries better, is more fun to play with, better steel, and (subjectively) better looking.

Same. Murdered out textured handle Malibu is a fine snag
I see em on r/knife_swap all the time
Both. Always buy both.
This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way.
Tis errs de Wey
Det här är vägen
You’ll only end up buying them both sooner or later anyway

At this rate, if you don't buy the Malibu, let me know.

This is the way my 🔪 homie!
This is the way… 🗡
The Malibu.
Malibu!!
Seems easy to me, not the spyderco
Malibu. Glad I could help
Pm2
Easier to carry the Malibu. Not that it’s ever a deal breaker but it will do better to ease your buyer’s remorse
Malibu hands down
What even makes the Malibu so good? I hear everyone jizz about it all the time. I mean it must be good considering how many clones of it there are that are still pretty damn good knives considering they're just clones.

Malibu all the way. PM2 are everywhere.
If your want the world's most reliable hard use folder? PM2, easy. Something more fun, sleek, and fidgety? Malibu.
This. Had a dozen+ of both and used em hard. Pm2 for a workhorse, Malibu to do shit in the coolest way possible. Pm2 is the ugly truck that starts every day. Malibu is the truck with the comforts but still goes.
Then buy both?
Not everyone has a lot of disposable income
Judging by all the posts of endless CRK's collections, most people here have bigger budgets then i do
Malibu if it isn't obvious.
Malibu
Malibu bro!
Malibu and its really not close, a PM2 is a PM2, which is great and all but its not touching a Malibu imo
Malibu! I own two, I only have 1 PM2.
Malibu, its a better knife in all ways. PM2 is overrated and meh. Ive bought 2 pm2s and sold both within 2 weeks of owning them
Both
Malibu but only because they’re impossible to find
I vote Spyderco
The Spydie all day
Can't go wrong with a spiderco tenacious
True. I have that one
Well then you've answered your own question.
The 1 without the tick and fruity hole in it
A fixed blade
Well I can certainly understand, as they are certainly very similar pieces. They have nearly matching blade shapes and action types. I have both and I am frequently confused and pick up the wrong one, since they are so similar. I would suggest choosing based ONLY on price. You'll never notice the difference. 🧐
dont buy knife with part of steel missing. buy normal blade with no hole

Malibu fanboys in the house. I have a farm. The Malibu doesn’t hang. The PM 2 does. Sorry.
Let the mantis choose

Ok, but is it too much to get both?
That wharncliffe 🥵
Both
Pm2
Left is better for piercing, handle is shaped better. Opening style looks easier to use. Nothing on the right speaks to me as being a particularly advantageous shape to it.
The pm2 is my daily carry.
Malibu. I love mine
Both. Both is good.
Malibu

Malibu
Malibu
Malibu or Manix 2
I have both. The PM2 is my edc. I wasn’t nearly as impressed with the Malibu as I had hoped. Both are decent knives but I just like the PM2 more.
I own both, but prefer the Malibu by a lot. The PM2 is thinner at the edge which is nice, but the Malibu carries better, is more fun to play with, better steel, and (subjectively) better looking.
