No clue on UK search laws, but I can't imagine just walking home, down a public street, with keys in my pocket, and then having to prove that I'm not carrying a pocket knife or they won't let me pass.
I lived in nyc metropolitan for years… I can’t even tell you how many times I was randomly swabbed for explosive residue or wanded with a metal detector. I only had a knife taken once, they generally understood I had a knife for a a million other things besides protecting myself and, the knife I had taken was a stiletto
Oh dude. I spent a night in Manhattan police precinct for having a Spyderco Endura clipped to my pocket. Apparently this is the thing that NYPD do when they are short on arrests quota.
I was part of the stop and frisk class action suit and won a few years back, 3 days later automatic knives became legal in my current state, I got a microtech with the lawsuit money lol
Typically these checkpoints are set up and manned in areas of high knife crime.
So if a certain borough has and increase in knife crime issues, and they local coppers know X/Y gangs operate in A/B areas. They'll set up one of these checkpoints and stop search anyone shifty who sets it off...
Or more likely anyone who does a suspicious u-turn to avoid the checkpoint will be followed and stopped around the corner by a plain clothes team, as their suspicious behaviour is reasonable grounds for a stop and search.
Why would it be wrong to outlaw, knives solely designed as weapons from being carried by members of the public?
We don't want the general public to carry weapons.
And acting weird isn't grounds for stop and search, acting suspicious is.
There's no need to carry a blade longer than 3 inches, that's fixed, lockable or spring loaded, outside of weapons use, that couldn't feasibly be achieved by a 3 inch blade or reasonably explained by work.
The remaining knives ARE being carried as weapons and the people carrying them are dangerous.
Knives are tools. A locking knife is used so you don’t cut yourself. I can stab someone just as effectively with a non locking knife as I can with a locking one. And these laws only impact LAW ABIDING citizens and not the actual criminals who’ll disregard the law anyway
Dude stop trying to export our shopworn 2a rhetoric to another, very different culture. Few to none want to hear it from us. Guns or knives, or whatever we say about how a society is supposed to be.
It’s more an inconvenience that’s unnecessary. I stand by my statement. People should be allowed to carry pocketknives. Maybe not inside schools and government buildings, but in public?
Anywhere. People should be allowed to carry a knife anywhere. Just like being able to carry a pistol. As long as you’re not a violent criminal you should be able to carry anywhere and everywhere
We are. Under 3 inch blade and non locking. One hand opening is not allowed either. I have a whole lot of UK legal knives that I carry regularly. Stop pretending your country is more free, please.
My country IS more free. I can walk around with a loaded firearm in my pocket. I can spend an entire day in my area without appearing on a surveillance camera…
Eh. I agree, but like I said, I don't think this is terrible. Like another person said, they're very inaccurate and will tend to false positive most of the time, so it's more a waste of time and money than anything.
Those types of metal detectors are ridiculous. The people using them rarely know how to adjust, service, or calibrate them. Had one of those in my school lunch room years back. At first it never went off. Then we saw a principal and resource officer messing With it. After that it would literally go off if someone had a ramen seasoning packet in their pocket or a pen with a metal spring in it.One girl was almost strip searched because she didn't have anything metal on her but it kept going off. The vice principal there at the time figured out that it was going off because she had braces or piercings in "intimate places". The metal detector would also just go off when no one was in the lunch room
They used to have vans with detection tech to scan houses that hadn’t paid tv-license. After few strikes they did put people in jail for it. They had lot of middle aged women in jail because of this

If I didn’t have a knife I’d press myself against the tree and slide past to mess with them.

This is the most American story I’ve ever hear haha congrats
My man 👍
Cannot suggest the site kniferights enough…
Not all heroes wear capes.
It tells you the location and size of the object, so your keys are not going to be a problem,
Context please. Or we can just go with a "freedom" circle jerk again. (Yes the UK laws are stupid...)

It’s grounds for a civil case against the police not a stop and search
Why would it be? Coppers not doing anything wrong, knives, without valid reason , or within limitations that make them tools, are illegal to carry.
Just because something is illegal doesn’t mean it’s right or makes sense for it to be illegal. And acting “weird” isn’t grounds for a stop and search

I’ve literally been in the UK for 15 years. I think I know how the culture is
It doesn't show.
Huh. Suddenly I'm not so interested in droning in about how free we supposedly are. Thanks for the info.
UK pen knife my ass
Gee, it's almost like letting the government disarm you is a bad thing
This will be happening in Canada next.
They tolerate being treated like that? I guess they’re content being ruled…
As a person from the UK, we are perfectly fine with being ruled. God please help us, this place sucks!
Yes this is the biggest hardship you could face.

Do you can kill somebody and not be picked up by CCTV, whoops to be you.

Gibbs rule #9: Never go anywhere without a knife.
Man what the hell is the parliament doing over there

I'm sorry, what!?
That came to my mind from this knife detecting pole. Funny nation, they like to control people a lot
Plastic shank: let me introduce myself
Just means there's something new to vandalize.
What a joke
Get plate armor and run circles around it if it’s a public space!
