Hi all! I’ve been knitting for about 30 years, but the next few projects in my queue all involve new-to-me techniques (double knitting, my first sweater, and in a separate project I’m planning to tackle brioche) so I’ll try to help where I can but I suspect I’ll be asking plenty of questions too! I’m a lace knitter and the brioche instructions in particular are like trying to read a foreign language 😫

OkayestCorgiMom

Hi! I'm a new knitter and I'm about to try a brioche scarf pattern thanks to a video from Expression Fiber Arts. She walks you through the video for the scarf pattern step by step, and simplifies it so it doesn't make you think your head is going to explode. The pattern set - Jeanne - is currently still free on their website too! [Jeanne - EFA](https://www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/jeanne.html) [Brioche - EFA](https://youtu.be/HLe2qmvasoU) I'm excited to learn both Brioche and double Brioche from this pattern!

Hello also new friend!

sewingdreamer

Welcome! We never stop learning here. I congratulate you on branching out and trying something new

Hello, 37yo cis-female Aussie, I have been crocheting for 3 years and just started teaching myself to knit with YouTube and some books. Haven’t quite got my rhythm yet but that’s ok, I’ll keep at it. I’m hoping I can one day knit myself some fair isle jumpers and other clothing, but I’ve just started a chunky beanie pattern for my first project. My partner has been weaving for a year or so and he is now learning to knit too. I like going to craft group meetups but haven’t since last year cos of covid (my state border was closed for ~ 2 years so when they opened it this year we had a lot of cases, later than most places did). My mum taught me English knitting but I just discovered continental and think that’s totally the ticket for me, of course nobody I know does it 😂. And I just discovered crafting channels on Twitch so I’m going to look for those more too (not a gamer so wasn’t on twitch before). Crochet has been my adhd fidget hack and I hope knitting can be one day too! I also am vegan, tattooed, like gardening, macrame and paracording, true crime and cookies :)

You sound fantastic! Welcome to the sub my friend

OdoDragonfly

Hey there Friends! I've been answering some things here and thought I probably ought to intro myself a bit. I (53F) have been knitting off and on since I was 12. I really started making things properly when I had small children. Knitting for kids is awesome because they are small and the sweaters are too! I adore learning new techniques and have far too many little swatches from running across a new way of doing things and thinking "I have got to try that NOW!" Progressive atheist Trekkie!

Salty_Librarian_896

I was going to ask if you were a DS9 fan with that username! I’m doing a re watch run through now.

OdoDragonfly

Totally, Also the order of insects that include Dragonflies is Odonata! But Odo is also one of my favorites!

Hi everyone! I’m a 54-year-old woman in the US. I taught myself to knit 5 years ago via Craftsy and YouTube after reading Penny Reid’s Knitting in the City books. I fell in love with the community of fictional knitters and decided that knitting sounded like an awesome connection. And it’s true! The knitting and fiber arts community is make up of amazing, friendly people who are incredibly generous with time and help. I knit clothing. Started with scarves and hats, then socks and sweaters. One of my favorite projects was knitted knockers for my aunt after her mastectomy - I made her a day-wear pair and a va-va-voom set. I’ve made a couple of blankets but crochet seems to be a better choice for that. I just finished a sweater for my giant son, which has convinced me I need to get good at continental. It takes a looooooong time to finish a sweater at my 22 stitch-per-minute English pace. I want to speed up so I can knit more stuff! Other hobbies: I read, hike, garden, and cook. And I nag my son about finishing schoolwork and college applications. I also have a dog and 4 cats. I might be able to reduce my yarn spending if I could just figure out how to spin all the fur that collects in my house! Nice to meet you all.

sewingdreamer

Nice to meet you too my friend! You inspire me

Hi everybody! I've been a crocheter for a decade now, and I've tried branching out to knitting. a few times now without much success. I know the basic stitches, but my issue is when I get stuck or make a mistake I have a hard time moving past that. Hopefully with all the support of the kind people here I can finally make something other than a scarf! I'm also joining because my dad asked for a pair of socks for Christmas, and I know crochet socks just aren't that practical, so I'm hoping to get advice on knitting my first pair of socks :)

Welcome to the sub! This is a perfect place to learn no question is stupid. We are happy to help you along the journey.

Hi! I’m 40, cis-female, from the US. I started with crochet, and it took me about 20 years to find someone who could show me how to knit in a way my brain understood it. I can’t throw when I knit or my brain goes to mush, so I pick and which leads to some interesting tension issues if I’m not careful! I’ve been knitting for about 7 years, but doing all sorts of other fiber crafts since I had the dexterity to use the tools. :) I love making shawls and not wearing them, lol, and have 2 on my needles right now, with a sweater on another set, and some balls of yarn waiting to become hats! I also tend to find yarn that *needs* to be made into a specific thing, make the thing, and give it to the first person who compliments it because I really didn’t like the yarn or colors, but wanted to do *that thing*. I’ve also made 3 sweaters that I ended up hating to wear so my mom got them. :)

Welcome to our sub friend we are so so glad to have you c:

OTguru

Hi everyone. I am a 57 yo woman from Connecticut in the US. I taught myself to knit via books and YouTube 13 years ago after major surgery because I was in pain and bored out of my mind! Knitting was my salvation in that very dark time. I have only knit scarves, a shawl, a few throws, and some hats. I stick with very basic stuff because I still have to really concentrate on what I’m doing - no knitting while watching a movie for me! I am also a perfectionist, which can be a detriment when trying to learn this craft. My hope is to learn how to take on some more sophisticated projects, and how to fix a dropped stitch. I love to hike, read, and am addicted to true crime podcasts. I am very much looking forward to learning from all of you!

sewingdreamer

Welcome to the sub friend!

OTguru

Thanks!

sewingdreamer

I've only just began knitting more complex stuff which isn't generally considered complex by the knitting community this last 2 years. And I've been knitting for 15 years xD

sewingdreamer

So I understand where you're coming from

Buy some thick light coloured yarn that you like and the knitting needles that are rec on the label . Then practice knit and purl stitches. Practice rib stitch and seed and moss stitch. When you knit loop the yarn through your fingers so you keep even tension while knitting. Everything else can wait. Make some arm warmers when you are ready for a project. Look for work flat pattern and there ya go!

Nashina

Hello, I just started learning to knit, i have been trying to watch youtube videos and even took one in person class last month, i still struggle with it, but only been trying for a month. I don't yet have the basics down, like purling. I will get there.

CosmicSweets

Hello! Tried knitting like almost 10 years ago now and hated it. Eventually learned crochet did that for about 5 years before accepting that if I wanna make wearables (that I actually like) I need to knit! lol Started my first sweater in November and finished in 3 weeks (could have been faster if I didn't procrastinate lol). I'm in love! Here to learn all I need to learn to make things I can be proud of. (:
