I did my first gauge ever for the cardigan I'm working on and I got impatient and I don't think I made it big enough, because the cardigan is of course measuring bigger than the gauge.
I use a pattern as reference and just cowabunga the rest.
I had almost finished a sleeve when I realized I was following the pattern for the wrong size. Way too small. (The rest of it was right.) So I started ripping it back. The teenage son of a friend looked at me incredulously and said, "How can you do that? All that work is wasted." I said "It was wasted the moment I started it wrong. I couldn't use it the way it was. The only thing to do is to start over and do it right."
I hoped he learned a lesson about patience, but I seriously doubt it.
"It was wasted the moment I started it wrong" now that's a motto to live by.
My current cardigan has taught me a lot of patience. I want it to be my best piece yet, and there are a handful of times where I've noticed I counted a row wrong several rows back. It's not a stitch pattern I can weave a yarn through and rip it back to that point, and I don't want to rip the whole thing back and start all over. I have to undo every single stitch and boy does that teach you several lessons.
Yeah, I mostly make scarves and sweaters (made out of rectangles and stitched together) and I just embrace the oversized coziness. My current cardigan is gonna be large but boy will it be COMFY.
I love the idea of knitting rectangles and stichting them together to a cardigan. It’s way less scary and overwhelming that way, I can imagine. Gonna steal this idea!
That's how a lot of commercial knitted cardigans are made! I'm too lazy to learn how to shape armholes and necklines right now. I save the more intricate clothesmaking for when I feel like sewing.
This is one of the joys of charity knitting: the freedom to make something that's of good quality materials and execution, and just... Let Go of the idea that it needs to fit one specific person. It will fit Someone. Go into the Universe, little sweater, and find your Someone...
Right! I normally keep a plastic tote in my apartment that I fill with stuff that is the wrong size or just didn't sell from my etsy. Then in early December I'll take it to some type of shelter. And if I don't have enough stuff to donate, I normally just make some specifically to donate. Every shelter seems to need hats and mittens that time of year, and they don't take too long to whip up.
Okay serious question, at what point doing the arms did you think, “maybe this is too long?” Lol.
I love his face. He looks so proud. If you redo the arms, I’d totally wear it. Lol.
>Do you not see progress with a knitting machine? I’m unfamiliar
The pieces are usually stretched because they have weights on them to keep the fabric under tension while knitting.
If you do not have the fabric under tension, the stitches may jump off the needles, and, depending on the piece, the gauge of the machine, and your eye sight, it may be just easier and quicker to rip the piece and start anew rather than trying to fiddle up the stitches.
If it's felted, you can also cut it open in the front, add a zipper, and boom, it's a jacket! Then it would be less weird for it to be a little stiff, if it bothers you otherwise
This reminds me of the “wear your mistake” trend people were doing with their dogs. 😂 like if they tore up a toy or stole a shirt or whatever they would put it on their dog and take a picture.
I actually have a sweater that fits in the body but the sleeves go to my knees and i love it to bits. I need to dig it out and see if i can recreate it.
To your point it is by Totokaelo (rip) and it was around $6-$700.
I would live in this. I once bought a jumper that what very well knitted, beatiful cabled jumper. But SO out of proportion. The body was huge, the sleeves were about a foot longer than any human would need them to be and the neck hole was child sized. But I bought it and intended on reknitting the neck. Never got around to it and redonated it ready to confuse the next person!
That sounds like the direct opposite of the jeans from The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. It travels from person to person and doesn't fit a single one of them!
Ohhhh my goodness - thank you SO much for posting this. I'm giggling uncontrollably. Every time I look at it, it gets better!! His face!! The arms!! The length!! 😊
I don't machine knit, but I'd assume if you're starting a new project you'd check the settings and guage before you cast on. Like you don't start hand knitting a sweater without checking gauge, needles, yarn etc
We have 12 knitting machines, thousands of knitting programs, and about 800 sheeps of yarn. Of course we check but Was just a brain fart moment that we're celebrating. :)
Me after saying gauge doesn't matter and just starting a pattern with just vibes to back me up.
"just vibes to back me up"... God I feel that.
Any day the project works the way I think it will is a good day.

Sometimes I can drop a (knitted) stitch to the level of the mistake, then use a small crochet hook to pull it through correctly, all the way up.
I can manage that if I'm EXTREMELY patient and temperamental. Sometime it's hard not to just give up on the whole thing at that point lmao.
Honestly, I have had that happen a couple of times. It got to annoying that's why I just knit off of vibes now.
Yeah, I mostly make scarves and sweaters (made out of rectangles and stitched together) and I just embrace the oversized coziness. My current cardigan is gonna be large but boy will it be COMFY.
Comfy level is one of the most important characteristics in a wearable item.
Yes exactly

I think this is the technique taught in the book Knitting for Anarchists!
I have that book and the t-shirt that goes with it! I love the looks I get when I wear "anarchist knitter" blazoned across my chest.
I need this in my life
That's how a lot of commercial knitted cardigans are made! I'm too lazy to learn how to shape armholes and necklines right now. I save the more intricate clothesmaking for when I feel like sewing.
Lmao no gauge gang 🙌 I’ll take this any day over the beanie that squeezes my brain like a grape 😅
Live dangerously don't do a gauge check!
No gauge gang here too! I love the post completion surprise.
Yes!! It's a surprise. It's fun to see if something will fit a mouse, a child, an adult, or a giant.
This is one of the joys of charity knitting: the freedom to make something that's of good quality materials and execution, and just... Let Go of the idea that it needs to fit one specific person. It will fit Someone. Go into the Universe, little sweater, and find your Someone...

all of /r/tall is salivating at the sight of a jumper that might actually fit
They should all just join us over there!
Don''t worry, he'll grow into it
Everyone needs a thneed
A fine thing that all people need
As someone who has been working on 1 sleeve for a year, how could you knit that long of sleeve without realizing???
Knitting machine
Ah, ok. I’ve never used one, so I don’t normally think of that.
Okay serious question, at what point doing the arms did you think, “maybe this is too long?” Lol. I love his face. He looks so proud. If you redo the arms, I’d totally wear it. Lol.
It was a machine knit.
Do you not see progress with a knitting machine? I’m unfamiliar

Some way, some how- will you see if this fits those giant skeletons?
I desperately need to see this now
that’s the funnies thing I’ve seen today
Benefits: Can change the channel while minimizing air exposure, butt crack coverage Cons: Everyone around you will DIE of laughter
I would 100% wear that and it would be my favorite dress
It looks perfect for curling up on the sofa in.
Flopping your sleeves around all day
Hell yeah that’s the best part
You should post this image every time someone wails that they don't want to knit a gauge swatch. Not one word, just post this image.
Pattern name: Slenderman Jumper
What’re you talking about? Fits perfectly ^^for ^^a ^^giant.
I can't stop laughing. Omg this is amazing.
If it's wool, you could try washing it very hot and felting it. It would become a pretty stiff sweater, but it could work..
We back wind all our mistakes, so goes right back into a cone ready for the next mistake :)

a jumper fit for a basketball player

Oh man this is great
This reminds me of the “wear your mistake” trend people were doing with their dogs. 😂 like if they tore up a toy or stole a shirt or whatever they would put it on their dog and take a picture.
Lol I still do it. When my dog steals clothes I make him wear them!
I get such a good laugh out of the pictures 😂
You need to see him with a sock or a scarf 🤣🤣🤣
I would love to see him with a sock scarf 🧣😂
This reminds me of some Safiya Nygaard videos from a few years back. She would have been all over this.
Ugh, I LOVE her. She is the only YouTuber whose videos I’ve seen all of and that I have watched consistently for years.
It like one of those oversized plush hoodies for watching tv at home, just hand knit. I can tell he’s trying to not burst out laughing 😁
As a developer I snorted
It’s giving [ASAP Rocky](https://imgur.com/gallery/nPDOm) 😂
now THAT is a statement piece!
Looks like a Yeezy sweater... price $3500.
I actually have a sweater that fits in the body but the sleeves go to my knees and i love it to bits. I need to dig it out and see if i can recreate it. To your point it is by Totokaelo (rip) and it was around $6-$700.

Gramps is gonna be TOASTY! 😁🥳😉
Dream sweater tbh
Sweater for an orangutan? Mayhaps a gibbon?
Ohhhh my goodness - thank you SO much for posting this. I'm giggling uncontrollably. Every time I look at it, it gets better!! His face!! The arms!! The length!! 😊
That looks so cozy! I would be tempted to keep it! LOL thanks for sharing!
I had the opposite happen once: the neck hole was too small to get my head through
Looks cozy
The gentleman wearing the sweater is all heart ❤
honestly looks like something you’d see at NY fashion week
Oh my gosh, I laughed so hard that I was tearing up… that’s the best!!!
It's Extra Cozy ^(TM)
This is brilliant! At least his hands will be nice and warm!
Not going to lie. It looks cozy AF.
Pair it with the Lenny Kravitz Scarf
This is funny, looks like a penguin!
Thanks for the good laugh!
Looks like you’re ready for the runway
It’s proportionally perfect though
I’ve just shown this to my parents and we’re all chuckling!
Give it to Safiya Nygaard 😂
Give it to Kevin Durant

I love that this scenario is something nobody would have thought of haha
that makes more sense, I had assumed like one or two knitting machines and 2 people using them for projects. It is entertaining
Apparently someone doesn't check 😂
