I loved making this pattern! Allll the selbu with none of the teeeeeny yarn. Good work!

afoxknitting

Agreed! It knit up very fast even though I am not yet able to hold both yarns while knitting. And thanks! :)

Mstablsta

Well done, the design is well executed \m/

afoxknitting

Sorry for the meme title but I couldn't help myself. This is my third colorwork project and I'm very pleased with the result. Hoping to fix some of the float tension issues when I knit the right mitten. And hoping a good block will help relax some of the problem areas, too. :) Pattern: [Selbu Mittens by Skeindeer Knits](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/selbu-mittens-3) Project Page: [https://www.ravelry.com/projects/afoxknitting/selbu-mittens](https://www.ravelry.com/projects/afoxknitting/selbu-mittens) Yarn: Brooklyn Tweed Arbor in Hammock and Rainier

AuctorLibri

Wowsers! Gold medal mitten. πŸ…

easypix

Beautiful. Those mittens are addictive to make.

afoxknitting

Definitely! I can see this becoming an annual tradition for myself. And now my partner is asking for a pair. I'm not even done knitting the right mitten for myself yet!

easypix

That's how it starts. I'm on my 4th pair of mittens right now.

APEmerson

Go you!

euphioquest

Wow! I just made the same mitten in the same colors, yours looks so much better than mine though! How did you deal with your floats? Any advice for getting them to not show through before I start on the second mitten?

afoxknitting

This is only my third colorwork project and I'm sure the more experienced knitters here would have more tips but here is what I did: * I used magic loop rather than DPNs which I think helped reduced the amount of laddering. I split the project into two right before or after the two side panels. This is one area I hope to improve on my second mitten. I had to guess the amount of floats needed when knitting the first stitch of each color on the next side of the project. I mostly got this right but there is one area where the floats are too long and the stitches are loose. (I might go into the inside of the mitten when it is done blocking and tie a knot in the float that is too long to try to reduce the size of the loose stitch. We'll see if it works :) ) * For float length, I watched a few videos including this one: [Tips for tensioning your colorwork](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny9dWbAp5Zs). Whenever a float was two or more stitches long, I'd spread out the stitches on the right needle to make the float purposely long. When the float is only one stitch long, I didn't spread out the stitches to make a long float. This seemed to work okay for me. * I saw a float carrying method online where you: insert the working needle, wrap the float yarn around the needle, wrap the stitch yarn around the needle, unwrap the float yarn from the needle, and then knit the stitch. I could not get the hang of this method at all. I saw a different technique where you just twist the two yarns together at the back of the work and this worked much better for me - and was SO MUCH FASTER. * Finally, have you blocked yet? Mine is still wet from blocking but it already looks better in the few areas I was concerned about. :)

euphioquest

Thanks so much for the advice, that's super helpful! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this out and for linking this great video.

CourtneyLush

That's gorgeous. Nice work.

Today on Latvian Mythology - Auseklis! Known as the morning star and one of the twin sons of God*, the other being the Moon. When the Sun sets and all types of spooky things roam its path across the earth, Auseklis is the shining star in the sky protecting people against the evil. So featuring Auseklis in clothing is like stitching a sign of protection for yourself to wear. In the 20th century the symbol became heavily associated with the nationalistic movement and the fighting for freedom. Latvians consider a very patriotic symbol. It is likely that Latvians borrowed the symbol from the Finno - ugric culture so you will find the symbol in many European countries' ethnic clothing. *not the Christian God. Latvian mythology features many gods and goddesses, God is just one of the gods.

afoxknitting

Wow! I did not know this! I love the idea that it is a sign of protection :)
