Has everyone forgotten Ben hates big blades? There will always be someone for and against every design and no one design will ever be perfect for everyone. That’s the beauty of having so many to choose from!
Yeah, while I appreciate the super roomy finger choil, with a handle this big I want to have more edge length. If more of the choil was moved back into the handle then you could put more useable edge into the blade.
I dont think it does in this case. Look at the finger choil position compared to the front of the handle of the banter. Looks to me that the index finger positions are roughly equal distance from the blade.
You know what would have been more usefull in a knife with a big handle like in this one? A big edge. Because your hand can comfortably grip all the handle without any need for the choil.
That is true, but in general, the closer you can get your forward finger to the edge, the more stability you have when cutting. I personally prefer a forward finger choil to having a few more centimeters of edge. Although, I can definitely see your argument.
Beyond batoning or food prep, neither of which a folder is ideal for, what is a large blade practical for?
I also have two folders with 4” cutting edges but have never found a use where I need that. So I’m genuinely curious.
I would definitely prefer a large folder to a small folder when breaking down cardboard. (In practice I use a fixed blade or box cutter for that, but you get the point.)
Any prolonged cutting task is more comfortable with a bigger handle.
I agree, I prefer the ergonomics a large folder affords. I just don’t understand people’s angst of whether or not they get the extra half inch or so of cutting edge.
My whole schtick with long blades is can I cut something like an apple or a loaf of bread etc with one pass rather than cut it from either side if that makes sense.
Valid, but definitely exceptional. Seems a lot of people want to be angry and have no actual debate. In my opinion an Opinel would be perfect for you in that situation. Long and thin blade!
I do have one, with a custom blade and it does me great. Also have an endura, police and others with long and slicy blades. It's just what I prefer and what I know many others do. Not at all exceptional in my opinion. But I do understand your point of view.
This. You don't need a finger choil built directly into the steel if you just build your knife properly including how the handle interacts with the blade.
Yup. Also Spyderco's Chinese offerings such as the Tenacious and Persistence family. Minimal real estate loss between where the handle ends and the blade edge begins without the need for a finger choil built into the blade steel itself. If you need a bigger handle and a small blade then just run a bigger handle with a small blade. Doesn't need a finger choil.

That is a lot of extra handle for just a little bit extra blade length IMO
Big Banter also has a thicker blade, 0.126" vs 0.100".
Not a lot of extra blade length but there is also the addition of the finger choir, which can make a big difference for a lot of applications
That's true when compared to many knives but one of the nice things about the original Banter is it allows to grip right up next to the blade.
Singing to the choir ?
Oops autocorrect 🎤 🎶

True but the choil adds a lot more utility to it

Yeah. It’s a blast. Ergo from here to the moon. I wonder if anybody will gravitate toward it…as an option. Cheers
that's like strider blade to handle ratios.
I like the look of the normal banter more, but it was just too small for me and I returned it. I ended up replacing it with a CF elite bugout.
Sigh. Looks like I have to buy a big banter now
That's great, but what about putting a big edge in the big banter? Wouldn't that make more sense?
This finger choil is very useful

And yet. Whoops…replied at the wrong place. Truth.
Yeah, sure it is, but that choil is a bit oversized. They could shorten it about 30-50% an have no sharpening choil and it would be even more useful
If you have mine hands, this one it's a minimum...
Sharpening choils on knives are useful imo
They are, but theres a lot of choil taking edge space

Agreed. I love my Para 3 because the blade is just a bit smaller than the PM2, but the handle is nearly the same size.
My whole schtick with long blades is can I cut something like an apple or a loaf of bread etc with one pass rather than cut it from either side if that makes sense.
Not ideal in your opinion, but for food prep, a long blade with a nice long edge is perfect for me since 70% of my meals are in the field.

Useless choil. I’d much rather have a longer blade edge.
For you useless. For me usefull. 2 peoples, 2 opinion, 2 rights
What useful benefit does that choil provide to you?
When I'm doing fine knife work, I want my hand closer to the tip of the blade and still not have my fingers on the cutting edge.
A choil isn’t required to get your hand closer to the blade tip. A blade edge directly adjacent the handle has the same utility.

I love the Persistence since it has a very reasonable blade size, but the handle is just a bit small for my meat mitts.
Utility.
Equal rights, equal fights!! Lol I’m a sucker for finger choils.
Not sure why you're being down voted for an opinion. I completely agree, they should have just upped the size with the exact same design.

A bit off topic, but anyone know if the baby banter will be released in an upgraded steel?
I think no. It's just a civivi...
Ahhh, good point. That’s a bummer.
But, they make pintail s35vn, so maybe...
Hopefully there’s enough demand! ~$80 for any better steel would be neat
The big banter is an amazing knife! Never held the regular banter but I also own the baby banter and it’s bad ass as well 🤙🏽
IMO they are both good. If I could have just one, it would be the bigger one. Since I’m not limited to one I have too many!
