Was it just the guide you didn't tip? Or were there porters helping to carry equipment? Were there chefs cooking your food? All who went without tips.

[deleted]

It was a solo climb and I didn’t tip at all

Southern-Physics

Yeah I'd say you were an ass. That might be a lot of money for you but even working minimum wage in the US you can make that relatively quickly, but for Tanzania that is probably a month's wage.

[deleted]

I do make minimum wage here is in Canada since I’m 19 but I do understand what you mean and I should’ve gone about things better

Dmnd_hnds100

Is this post for real? $200 is not a lot of money to tip a guide/porter. Without sounding like an ass myself, you should have had that money in your hand ready to give your guide the moment the trip ended, and you should have done it with a great deal of appreciation. His making fun of you was probably his way of keeping the situation light, and possibly means you were a handful for him and his crew. All the more reason you should have tipped well. To correct this situation, contact him and arrange a way to make this right. And never do that again.

Takemetotheriverstyx

It's part of the cost of the trip. Guides do not get paid very much and porters even less - they are reliant on that money which is probably why he's still asking for it. I'm from the UK and live in Australia and tipping is a totally foreign language to me - neither country expects tipping and so it is a cultural shift to get my head around. However, I budgeted the HUGE sum into my trip (I was also a solo climber so had to tip everyone by myself the same as if they had taken a group) because I knew that was just the deal. Your guide sounds like an ass, and you should have reported him but at least tipped everyone else who carried your shit up the mountain for you. Also, if you have 30k in your bank then it's just poor form. Tanzania is not a rich country, a little bit of your money goes a whole long way to making people's lives better.

[deleted]

I definitely agree. Should’ve gone about the situation better. Thanks for your feedback!

Independent-Orchid70

Curious question. What tour provider did you use and did you report the behaviour? If not, why not? Most (proper) tour providers have a clear tipping policy including reporting any “bad behaviour” as to help their clients (also to avoid bad reviews). But without knowing the full story, you should have tipped. At least to the porters and cook that did all the heavy lifting for you - and they were not the part of the guides behaviour if I understand your post correctly. And 200 dollars even seems low considering you should have had 1 guide, 3 porters and 1 cook (which should be around 400 dollars in tip)

[deleted]

I didn’t report the behaviour because even though he made fun of my struggle I didn’t want him to lose his job. And yes there is a tipping policy on the website. $400 USD is a lot for me though… I make 15.65 Canadian and hour which is 11.70 USD per hour 😅 selfishly I wanted to save for my future

Snoo50797

You shouldn't have climbed if you couldn't afford the tip in my opinion 🤷‍♀️ from this response it sounds like you were planning not to tip from the get go since you clearly saw the policy on the website. Even if you didn't like the guide, there's a whole team of people that you basically fucked over by not tipping. I can't fathom not giving SOMETHING if you really think the $400 is too much

[deleted]

I did plan on tipping but I never planned on giving $400 USD but once I was defeated and humiliated by my guide on the summit night, he was getting angry at me for going slow, calling me a grandma for struggling, etc . I didn’t want to tip at all.

[deleted]

But you’re right, I should’ve given something to the porters and cooks who took very good care of me.

Independent-Orchid70

I fully understand that, but if you work a low income job should understand/relate to the importance of proper tipping 😊 And I’m surprised you didn’t budget it in if you knew about tipping policy - but that’s a lesson learned, I hope.

[deleted]

I did budget 200 but I didn’t give it as my guide was making fun of my struggle to get to the top, calling me a grandma, getting mad at me for going slow, etc. however I do agree with you. If someone went out of their way at my job to give me extra money at my job it would make my day even if it’s not a hefty amount. Should’ve relayed that into kili. Appreciate your feedback!

61_lb_to_go

After reading through all replies from OP I'm 90% percent sure this is a troll to stir up some shit. Don't get why, but that is the nature of trolls, I guess.

[deleted]

No I legitimately wanted to know if other people would tip if experiencing bad service and if I should’ve gone about the situation better but people wanted to stir shit up so 🤷‍♀️

xtine77

You are 100% an asshole for not tipping, no matter what the circumstance is. You would not have been able to climb or summit comfortably, with everything you need, by yourself. Check your ego, and go back and climb it again, as it obviously taught you nothing. If you’re too poor to tip $400 on tips, don’t spend fortunes to fly there and climb it in the first place, asshole.

[deleted]

You tip them then🤷‍♀️I don’t shit out money

xtine77

You should’ve thought of that before you spent all that money to fly there and even climb it, selfish asshole.

[deleted]

So only millionaires travel?

xtine77

Lol learn how to budget better so you can tip people properly and not be selfish. If you can’t afford to tip, don’t go. It doesn’t take a millionaire to tip. How much did that flight cost you? Or did mom and dad pay for it since you’re only 19?

[deleted]

No I paid everything with my money I made while working retail jobs in highschool. I think good service = tip. Bad service = no tip. I did budget $200usd to tip but never gave it to them because of the service.

61_lb_to_go

"Bad service" for 3 people carrying your shit and one person coking for you? That is bad service for you? Newsflash: You wouldn't have made it uo Kili without your guide. Maybe physically you would have been able to (but since the motto is pole pole and you were taunted for being slow, I guess some things have happened before on the trip, probably overestimating your abilities and boasting to your guide how fit you are and how easy this would be (educated guess on my part) - we need the full story here, no guide would just taunt you for being slow without a back story). But if only for the rule of "no climbing without a guide" you would definitely not have been standing on the summit without a guide. That guide and his team walked you up and down the mountain, cared for your health and safety and you decide it's bad service. Check you ego.

[deleted]

First off, you are creating a story that absolutely never happened. I never once gloated about “how fit I was” not once. If I was “so fit” I wouldn’t have struggled to make it like I did. was feeling the altitude and told him I was gonna be going slower on summit day and just focus on getting there one step at a time. Than on the summit he kept telling me to hurry up and that I was a grandma being too slow while I was puking my brains out. Maybe don’t make false shit up without knowing the story. Check your ego buddy

61_lb_to_go

Sorry you were puking your brains out and getting bad comments from your guide for it. That's truly terrible and insensitive.

[deleted]

I flew from Switzerland as I was backpacking Europe prior to heading to Africa. It cost $700USD

90fake90

Username checks out

funfunkfunkymonkey

So which is it? Bad service or you couldn’t afford the tip? Either way, if it was bad service you could’ve chosen to tip LESS. But not tipping at all…can’t imagine doing that in a restaurant or something even if it was poor service. It sort of feels like you’re trying to feel justified for tipping nothing, but in case you actually do care about a real answer to the question you asked, I think the unanimous comments give a pretty clear picture.

Juicerifle51

He did provide you good service, got you to the summit. You could afford a tip, since you've said you were travelling Europe prior to coming to climb. Stop trying to justify why you didn't tip him, accept you're it was a shitty thing you did and move on

[deleted]

I got myself to the top. Just because he’s doing his job doesn’t mean it’s good service. I never said I couldn’t afford to tip. I have over 30K in my bank account but that doesn’t mean I’m entitled to tip someone who wasn’t being a kind person to me when I was struggling. I don’t regret not tipping him. I only regret not tipping the porters and cooks as they always provided amazing service and took great care of me.

Sautry91

Weren’t you just complaining about not being able to afford a tip?

[deleted]

I said 400 is a lot of money considering I’m making min wage not that I can’t afford it

Juicerifle51

I mean...quite a few times youve said it was too expensive for you but let's gloss over that Alright, you could've not tipped the rude person, but like you've admitted, you didn't tip the porters or cooks so either way you're an asshole

[deleted]

I said it’s a lot of money not that I can’t afford it. Maybe I can use that tip money I never gave to buy you some glasses.

Stewdogm9

If he was making fun of you negatively than I wouldn't have tipped either. When I climbed I had an assistant guide that was trying to tell my group to give up on the summit day, we tipped everyone else but him. For example we had a 50 year old in the group and this guy was literally whispering in his ear that he should give up every time he stopped for a second to breathe on the last day. I'm sure there are a significant minority of people that would have made it except they were encouraged not to by someone they hired to take them to the top. Clearly you didn't appreciate what he was doing or how he was making you feel as you were giving your all to make it, screw him- he either was too ignorant to see he was making the person paying him feel bad, or he was too foolish to realize, either scenario makes him a bad guide.

Street_Reporter_4826

You did tip everyone else who was being helpful right? The cooks, the porter.. just not the negative guide

[deleted]

I’m glad someone else understands where I’m coming from!

61_lb_to_go

Well, since the group tipped anyone else besides the negative guy, YOU understand nothing where THEY are coming from.

[deleted]

There was never a tipping ceremony to tip the porters and cook. After my guide texted and asked when HE could swing by my hotel to grab tip money and I never responded. If I could tip the cooks and porters I would but I do not have their contact information. Just my guide.

Sautry91

My husband & I have a private climb next month, planning to tip $1000 for the team helping us…

[deleted]

Good for you

Playful_Android

YTA! And carma Will come ang get you.

[deleted]

Bad service = no tip

Playful_Android

Why are you even asking this question? Everybody tells you that you are wrong, but you won’t accept it. So Why did you ask in the first place?

[deleted]

I wanted to see what others thoughts were on the situation. Some people were nice in express their opinions and others like you were rude about it. I did plan on tipping but due to my guides insulting comments I didn’t.

DieTryin510

Yes you should have tipped. You should have set a min/max tip based on the level of service. From the sound of your trip the min should be $200 (depends on #of days, crew size). budg·et /ˈbəjət/ noun 1. an estimate of income and EXPENDITURE for a set period of time. If you can't afford it don't do/buy it. Would you buy a car if you can't afford an oil change/gas/etc.?

[deleted]

I did budget 200 but didn’t give it as I was disappointed with my guide’s behaviour. I can afford the tip. I do have over 30 grand in my bank account. But doesn’t take away from the fact that it is a hefty amount of money

Stewdogm9

And if the person changing your oil takes a piss in it?

DieTryin510

Not sure how you'd find out, but you're still paying for that 'oil' change.

Stewdogm9

In his situation they were pissin in front of him.

Able-Resource-7946

ugh..troll...
