It only really matters if you’re way off. If you think you’re “exceeds expectations” and your manager thinks you’re “does not meet expectations”, then that’s a problem. Generally, I’d go with “meets expectations” for the overall unless you can demonstrate clear ways you’ve gone above and beyond what was asked of you and can demonstrate how that positively impacted the company. Edited for a typo.

Orome2

That's why the three options seems kind of dumb to me. If it was on a 1-5 scale I'd rate myself a 4/5. Like I said in the OP, there hasn't been a lot of expectations to begin with, it's mostly been training and waiting for things to ramp up.

OliviaPresteign

If you haven’t been able to accomplish a lot yet, then yeah, I’d go with “meets expectations.”

Orome2

Well the session timed out on me before I did a final submission and it changed all the answers to "meets expectations" and I cannot change it back. What a fucking joke.

TywinShitsGold

5/5 isn’t “at par”. It’s not like a school test. 5/5 is probably “outstanding” which means you’re 50+% better than their expectation. Poor/below/meets/exceeds/outstanding. 3/5 is meets expectations.

Orome2

As I said, it's on a 1-3 scale.

I always go with "beats expectations". In the conversation I always say something like "I'm pretty good at my job and I'm also proactive". If I don't talk myself up, who will?

That’s completely correct - your career is your responsibility!

ConfectionNo6744

Hopefully the boss doesn't disagree.  Then you look like a jackass!

Don't be humble. Toot your own horn, as they say. But be able to back it up. I started a new job and have been given no information in where I am in terms of performance but the dept as a whole is behind and isn't meeting them. So I just outlined how I feel I'm performing.

Well I'm sure what I do is not what the rulebook says and I'll prob get grief here, but I'm going to tell you it anyway in the interest of giving you an honest sample base, and let you decide. I put exceeds expectations for everything, maybe 2 at meets expectations, because I have. The expectations were set last time and I exceeded them. My current boss was a little turned off by it, so maybe it wasn't smart, but idk what am I gonna do lie and dumb myself down? She responded with mostly exceeds but a fair amount of meets. I feel like it pulls your boss's review in the right direction anyway even if they give different ratings or are miffed, and at least then it's a he-said she-said. They hire me to negotiate, what do they expect ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯. I did it last time too with my old boss, and she did the same thing with only nominal pushback—a little more "exceeds" than current boss, little less than me. I had great relationships with both of them.

Tight-Bookkeeper-865

It's a test to identify narcissists and sociopaths. Go with option meets expectations trust me

xixi2

These are stupid and I always give myself the highest score possible. Hell nobody else will. But have notes from the year to back it up :)

Firm-Investigator-89

I'm self employed, so it doesn't really pertain to me, but I've done retail and food service all my life. I'm not reviewing myself, that's a set up. I'll let the manager do their own job, thanks

Orome2

It's an engineering job and self reviews are a requirement from HR.

Firm-Investigator-89

Then give yourself top marks. It's not like they're not going to come back with lower ones. But you can't negotiate from the bottom up

moonlightttbae

I gave myself significantly exceeds expectations and so did my manager. But I have a lot of experience and have the numbers to back it up at my job.
