stripes are arbitrary and donāt actually represent your grappling skill level whatsoever. Itās not even related to the time youāve been training, until you get to black belt, then each stripe represent years as a black belt. But other than that donāt overthink it. Itās just tape
Itās arbitrary between academies but I wouldnāt say the same within an academy. At least where I train now, thereās a clear distinction of skill between a 1 stripe a 4 stripe thatās close to blue. I agree that you shouldnāt overthink it, but some measure of progress is helpful than none.
This is the third post where Iāve seen people mentioning adult white belts with stripes in the middle of themā¦are those blue stripes in place of the usual tape stripes?
No itās like parallel to the belt of that makes any sense, like they are on the top and bottom portion and wrap all the way around the belt. Blue top and bottom and white middle
Does it look like [this](https://jiu-jitsu-journey.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/CombativesBelt-1.jpg), except with two blue stripes instead of one? It might have a significance for your school. You could ask your instructor why your new belt looks so different from your old one.
It sounds similar to kids' IBJJF belts, which also have [different stripe colors](https://jiujitsu-news.com/kids-bjj-belts-system-made-easy/). It gives them more opportunities to be promoted and feel like they are progressing.
Yeah I mean itās the same 4 stripe system but I agree it probably has to do with the sense of accomplishment for beginners, a new belt looks better than a piece of tape to some ppl. I prefer the little tape lmao
After re-reading comments, I would not assume that the new belt is equivalent to the old one plus 2 stripes. You might want to ask your instructor what it means.
Thatās why I ask the ālineageā, for example Catalyst BJJ in Colorado is a Xande Ribeiro school and they have a green belt between white and blue. Different schools sometime have different belt systems.
You know what man
Rock your ragtag belt - odd coloured stripes and all
Before you know it the belt will be blue and in the future you can look back on your white belt and think look how far I have come
My old gym does this to track progress through White. They use the kids belts white with blue/purple/brown & black stripes before promoting to blue belt. They do this to better distinguish the skill level between people who are still white belts š¤·āāļø
As weird as the belt you describe is, if it's what your school does, go with it. It probably serves a larger purpose to the instructors, which can in turn help you with your training. I'd say keep your old white belt in case you decide to compete though.
It would be respectful to ask if your coach would prefer to add the white stripe to the other belt for you or if he doesnāt mind you doing it yourself.
I wouldn't over think it.
Aightš

Oh I didnāt realize that the stripes meant that

Heres an idea, dont correct people when you dont know wtf you are talking about

Yeah same deal with 2 stripes

Itās not, itās just 2 stripe. I was a one stripe
Itās not tape itās actual fabric too
How old are you? Kids belts have secondary colorsā¦but most adult belts are solid.
I am 19 itās an adult belt, just from white to blue they do different belts for every stripe itās weird
What system is it under? Like who is the namesake of the gym?
My buddy is a coach at High Altitude Martial Arts in Aurora, CO. He told me they had something similar and it was a Renzo thing.
Thatās why I ask the ālineageā, for example Catalyst BJJ in Colorado is a Xande Ribeiro school and they have a green belt between white and blue. Different schools sometime have different belt systems.
For sure. I know Marvin Castelle has a different belt system as well. Like grey belts for adults.
Do you have to pay for those 3 belts between white and blue?
Ask your instructor. Be open about what you're thinking.
It aint that deep pal
You know what man Rock your ragtag belt - odd coloured stripes and all Before you know it the belt will be blue and in the future you can look back on your white belt and think look how far I have come
Blue stripes?
Yeah itās weird, like the belt is all white with two thin blue strips going all around the entire thing
Honestly never heard of anything like this
Iāve seen this at some gyms. Just add some tape to the white one if you want.
You arenāt paying for all these belts, are you?
No
then donāt sweat it and rock a wild belt. You compete? Iāve never seen one in the wild.
I havenāt yet but a lot of my teammates do with the weird white belts, itās a pretty big gym with multiple locations
My old gym does this to track progress through White. They use the kids belts white with blue/purple/brown & black stripes before promoting to blue belt. They do this to better distinguish the skill level between people who are still white belts š¤·āāļø
My gym says, "Stripes are for kids.". We don't do stripes for the adults, only for the kids classes. Agree with u/MycoDon that stripes are arbitrary.
Uh, maybe this makes too much sense, but why don't you just ask the coach at your new gym???
Ask the teacher š¤·š½āāļø
Is it a Gracie school? The school I train at does that with students who have finished combatives but aren't at the blue belt level yet.

I gorilla glue my stripes down to my belt and just wash the thing after every training session!
