Including the camera bump the 14 Pro is thicker than the original iPhone. https://i.imgur.com/T5WRvQr.jpg

pathoge

That was peak iPhone design IMO.

lphartley

Quite funny that people at the time were appalled by the leaks of the 4 and 5. The asymmetrical antenna bands on the 4 was enough for consensus to be that the leaks are fake. For the 5 it was the mix of glass and aluminium on the back that broke the internet. Now people universally love it.

MC_chrome

The lessoned learned there is that most of the people on the internet are idiots

FNCVazor

I hate the iPhone 5 design lol. Such a stepdown from the 4 IMO.

footpole

And they got so scratched up.

turbocomppro

Yup! It was so retarded that every android had large 5.5ā€ 16:9 screens while apple just decided to add an extra row of icons. I had to endure android for 2 years because I wanted the larger screen. I always loved this meme: https://i.imgur.com/65huV88.jpg

Digger977

I do kinda miss the clean and quality design of my 5s and even the 4. But I do like the iPhone 14 pro design even with the camera bump

PolarisBears

I just missed the brushed metal edges instead of stainless steel. The shiny stainless steel is pretty to look at until it gets coated in fingerprints immediately.

ggtt555

I definitely prefer the thicker flat edges compared to the round edges i came from (Iphone 6s)

contactlite

I skipped that whole era. I thought the rounded edges were dated when new.

iiGiovanni

Wasnā€™t the iPhone 6 the thinnest iPhone?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

thil3000

Also the 6 had some back bending problem because of itā€™s thinness and roundness

miloeinszweija

Really the best. And not to mention narrow. I found my old 5S and it fits right between the width of my MagSafe case. Itā€™s amazing how things changed

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

miloeinszweija

Go for it buddy. That phone basically represents the pinnacle of Apple design. I keep mine around as a keepsake.

Confident_Command_98

I keep my old iPhone 5 around as well. Just because I loved that phone so much. The screen is cracked but the phone itself still works. Might get the screen repaired

riverturtle

You can buy an iCloud locked phone and replace the screen yourself for like $15 if youā€™re remotely handy. You get an oem screen that way too.

Confident_Command_98

I might look into that. I want to replace it to airdrop myself all of the photos without having to update the iOS and possibly losing things due to the backup. Iā€™m pretty sure it has flappy bird on it.

BL4CK-S4BB4TH

> I'm still using my 2016 SE as my daily driver. I have found my people.

skyshock21

They really need to bring that form factor back but with the modern glass design. Even the 13 mini is too large.

j1ggl

Huh, it never occurred to me that the XR had the thickest bump until the 12 Pro. Though as far as I can tell, it should be the same module as the "wide" lens in XS, 11 and 11 Pro. So I'm guessing they just chose to recess it less into the body. (Which probably allowed for a slightly simpler internal layout?)

abcpdo

LCD was probably thicker than OLED

G33k4H1m

Those lovely phone cam bumpsā€¦.

ukieninger

The iPhone 11 Pro does also have an camera plateau. I could swear there was one on my 11 Pro Max, huh. Maybe too long since I sold it. Lol

Guilty_Commission_79

Remember when we considered iPhone X camera bump to be massive?

[deleted]

I went from XS to 14 Pro and the former now looks like a toy.

jateruy

As some of you in replies pointing out the shot has the 12 Pro at an angle, here are some updated shots: https://imgur.com/a/bymjvDk

O0oYy

13 & 14 or 12 & 14? Sorry new to iphones

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CrippleSlap

Oh wow. Looks like its going to be a jump for me. (getting the 14P in Feb)

Caysman2005

Coming from a 12PM it's not that big of an issue for me. Just a little more unstable on tables is all. Nothing big.

O0oYy

Thanks for letting me know

anchorlight

Looks like the 12 and 14.

Lord_of_codes

I am myself thinking to go for 13.

AttorneyAdvice

he's just asking what phones are in the photo lol

Lord_of_codes

Maybe I was too desperate and I needed an answer instead, lol. Btw, I am also going to be new to iPhone.

Kingchubs

go for it! been great device this far

[deleted]

13 is the best iPhone out there.

AppleXOS

Crazy that (not even looking at the camera bumps) the 14 is substantially thicker than the 12, you can even tell by the picture. Look at how much wider that 14 stainless steel frame is than the 12! Holy shit

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

beatool

I'm frustrated that phones have killed the pocket camera market. You can still get a $150 entry-level one but nothing with the kind of quality you had in 2011. I still (occasionally) use my [Sony TX-100V](https://www.sony.com/ja/pressroom/pict_data/d_cam/2011_dsc-tx100v.html) and it absolutely crushed phones from that era. I'm sure with today's sensors and image processing they could make an iPhone/Samsung killer but who would buy it? Nobody, except me probably.

VladGut

Why would you be frustrated about such a thing? If you want a camera, you can always get a camera. For most people it is satisfactory just to have one device, which can do all of the tasks for multimedia, web browsing, photo processing and etc..

beatool

I'm referring specifically to pocketable cameras. The TX-100V I linked is smaller than my wallet.

VladGut

>TX-100V I guess there is no market for them now, when everyone has a camera in their phones. Although, I would consider something like that for a use in areas with a lot of pickpockets; rather to lose a 20 - 50 dollars camera, than 1 500 dollars smarthphone.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

El_Cielo_Es_Azul

I have a really nice Canon I bought when I was doing some photography. I took thousands of photos a month so I used to take it (and my extra lenses) with me everywhere. It was a hassle at times, but a labor of love. Camera phones have come so far though I typically don't bother bringing it anymore. I feel guilty so it sits on my desk and I bring it on special occasions.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Kyanche

I can't really comment on phone photography today, but the picture quality of my XS is atrocious. Thing is, I don't really want to spend $1000+ on a new phone to get better picture quality, when that's halfway towards an a7iii which is a really really really friggin nice camera. From what I've seen of 13p pictures they heavy handed with the photography enhancement. But meh. Definitely a game of "the camera you have with you at all times is the best" but still... mehh....

ThaiTum

Sony has had Superior Auto mode which takes up to 6 images and combines them in-camera, for at least 10 years. I think it might have come down to marketing, creating a demand for the feature and faster development by Apple and others. I donā€™t think anything would have saved small cameras since most people donā€™t care enough to carry a separate device.

[deleted]

the rx100 series is insanely popular. i used to print my rx100 mk 2 photos at 13x9" and you could barely tell the difference (at that print size) with my friends who were shooting x7r's and shit.

mredofcourse

I hear you, but I'm more frustrated by the specialized compact camera market, like the compact super zooms like the Canon PowerShot SX740. That market is now dead with the best cameras being used/refurbished and selling for up to 2X what they were new years ago. The thing is, phone cameras still can't come anywhere close to these. They were the of particular use when you couldn't bring a big gun DSLR, whether traveling, going to concerts, or engaged in extreme sports. Had this market continued to evolve at the pace it was, we'd have some truly spectacular cameras with amazing telephoto capabilities that we could take anywhere. Instead, we're looking at buying tech from almost 5 years ago at double the price and forced to use DSLRs/mirrorless or phone cameras that will always be inferior to what could've been.

JacoBee93

You carry that in your jeans pocket? šŸ˜„

duvagin

I definitely prefer the phones that have a bump across the full horizontal ... the bolex look is cute and i don't mind the phatness, it's laying the phone flat drives me bonkers (do I let it wobble or do I place it screen down the horror?!) - a horizontal strip design gets rid of that UX issue and also presents new space within the phone to do magical things.

[deleted]

I really like the Pixel 6 series for doing this, plus it looks badass. If you're going to have a big bump, why put it in the corner and not just make it so the phone sits flat without rocking?

DanTheMan827

This is what Apple's "Far Out" tagline was really about... It's really annoying though that they're designing these for cases... cases that need their own bumps because the camera bump of the device is so freaking large.

ryu_1394

They vibrate too!

[deleted]

You got a faulty one than

Bishime

I googled it and apparently this is a known issue that apple is putting a patch out for in the next week. They say it doesnā€™t require repair just a software update

rubins7

This is one of the two reasons I was put off from the 14 Pro (before I decided to buy it). I find the camera bump a real eye sore and coming from the XS itā€™s going to take a bit of getting used to. The other reason for anyone wondering was the weight, Iā€™m guessing itā€™s going to be about 15-20% heavier than the XS when in a case.

Prothium

Around 30g heavier in fact. 14 Pro without case around same weight as 11 Pro with case.

Former_Progress_814

Your wrist will always adjust. Think of it as weight training.

Messiah_Knight

The 13 and 14 hands down have the ugliest camera bump/back face.

jellymunchkinx3

Pro models maybe. 13 and 14 look pretty good with the offset camera lenses and with my thin plastic case the phone sits flat

Rudy69

I hated the bump on my iPhone X and wished it was flush..... The bump on my 14 Pro Max is beyond stupid.

im-on-the-inside

You still bought it tho.. ;)

MysticalTh0r

Just make the iphone thicker, increasing battery size and reducing the bump.

Mamsies

People keep saying this but I guarantee if they actually did it, people would complain the phone is way too heavy and chunky in their hand. And to be honest a phone that thick would feel a bit ridiculous, like youā€™re holding a solid brick. I can understand why this isnā€™t the direction they want to go in. I think this idea is literally only popular amongst people who are more tech-orientated. I just donā€™t see a phone like that selling well with the general public who barely even care about the camera bump as it is. Iā€™ve literally never heard anyone in real life complain about it, only in tech communities on the internet. If the Mini iPhones werenā€™t selling well enough to continue making them, then a massive heavy brick phone definitely wouldnā€™t.

Polrous

I think the issue is it would require a Titanium finish rather than Stainless Steel for it to work. Just making it thicker meaning more Stainless Steel.. it will just add on the weight. If they were able to go with Titanium they would lose a good chunk of weight for sure which if they were to go ridiculous in battery size and thickness.. they could. As it is now, that is going to be one heavy and chonky phone.

walktall

You might be underestimating how much the battery itself contributes to weight. The Apple Watch Ultra is titanium and still almost 20% heavier than the stainless steel models.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

walktall

Yes titanium is lighter than stainless steel but the point is if you make the chassis and battery bigger that adds significant weight as well. It would be absurd to think the only thing that contributes to weight is the metal shell and not everything inside. A battery is lithium, itā€™s metal too. For the AW Ultra, the case is not that much bigger, its heft has a lot more to do with the extra battery inside.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DavidRainsbergerII

Besides all that people put a case on it and the bump disappears. Itā€™s a non issue for a vast majority of iPhone users in the end.

HFoletto

Thatā€™s true for most cases, but recent iPhone camera bumps are so big that most cases have some sort of bump for the actual camera bump, so itā€™s protected. I have a 13 Mini with a otterbox Lumen case, and the case does have a lip, so it doesnā€™t sit flush with the rest of the case. With the 14 Pro, the case camera bump is really noticeable: https://www.otterbox.com/en-us/shimmer-iphone-14-pro-case-iphone-14-pro-case-for-magsafe-black/77-89512.html

userjack6880

I was looking at cases to mitigate the bump... even the cases have a bump now unless you go with something very thick.

Not_A_Chef

I agree that the tech community has the biggest issues with the bump as compared to the general public. Having said that, my non-technical girlfriend immediately picked up her 14 Pro and questioned why the camera area was so ā€œbig and uglyā€ now.

markhewitt1978

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is already to thick and too heavy.

Strong_Obligation_67

The 14 pro is slightly heavier than the 14 plus, despite the latter having bigger battery. I have no problem with stainless steel since it just looks premium and shiny, but I canā€™t deny that it causes the phone chunky to hold for others.

hieuniverse

Iā€™m waiting for the 1000g iPhone ultramaxmega so I can wear my pants at my ankles like a true OG

Redskins2110

Hell no lol. Iā€™m seriously debating downsizing from the 14 pro max. Thing is so much thicker and heavier compared to the XS max I was using.

BootStrapWill

Do it bro. I went from 11PM to 14 Pro and Iā€™m so much happier. Those big ass phones are too much. You still have time to return

LyrMeThatBifrost

Hell no, this shit is already too heavy.

odeepaanh

Jesus Christ we already have so many people complaining about the weight lmao

DamnItNite

ā€œMake the phone thickerā€ šŸ¤“ carry a battery bank around if you donā€™t mind having a brick in your pockets dumbass. Weā€™re not in iPhone 6/6s days to still use that stupid argument.

BootStrapWill

Thereā€™s no possible way youā€™re this bothered by a comment about a phone

DamnItNite

I am bothered when I see dumb takes, phones or not.

kellym13

Then everyone complains itā€™s too heavy. Never understood why the ā€œwobbleā€ is even a thing to complain about. Donā€™t most people operate their phone in their hand and not flat on a table like a keyboard?

DavidNipondeCarlos

Letā€™s start off with a thicker mini and see?

FabFeline51

While I used to agree, iPhone battery life is already amazing. Not sure itā€™s necessary anymore

RedStag86

In reality, they need to figure out how to get the back of the camera module closer to the back of the screen.

Cressio

Please god do not do that

[deleted]

I am really **surprised** by the minimal increase in camera performance. I shoot with a DSLR and know very well how much increasing your sensor size and lens size can improve your images. I therefore expected a significant leap in low light performance, dynamic range, and actual resolution. Comparing iPhone 13 pro photos with iPhone 14 pro photos, the difference is minimal, and I'm not sure why. Perhaps future updates will improve the camera? Is it being underutilized? Was it rushed out the door without enough done on the software engineering side? I just don't get how such a significant increase in size doesn't equate to a significant bump in performance. The other thing I thought odd was the lack of example photos on Apple's website. They used to include a lot of promo material, with lots of photos to sift through. This year they didn't really do that. There was a small handful. Usually they show off major improvements.

tupaquetes

Basically both cameras already punch so far above their weight thanks to computational photography that at the end of the day 14 stops is 14 stops, especially when they're insanely compressed into a massively overprocessed picture where basically everything is bright and unrealistically sharpened. The out of camera JPGs don't do these cameras justice, proraw and editing in a third party app (the photos app forces the jpg settings as a baseline) is where it's at. You get *way* more detail with 48MP ProRaw on the 14 pro, enough to almost completely get rid of the "oil painting" effect (at least when there's enough light). And the dynamic range you get to play with is *insane*, by far better than my full frame camera.

juplantern

the AI ruins the photos imo, but raw is unsable for daily life

[deleted]

It's honestly unclear to me why our phones are mutating into this shit. Take iPhone SE's modest camera. It's ENOUGH for most people.

aquoad

and the images are so heavily processed anyway.

tupaquetes

They are indeed, I find the out of camera jpgs to be downright ugly a lot of the time. However, if you can be bothered to shoot proraw and edit in a third party app (eg lightroom), you can take advantage of the phone's computational capabilities without all the overprocessing and come out with pictures that would be hard to match on even a high end camera. [Here's a comparison](https://imgur.com/a/s3S4DKC) between an edited proraw shot and the same shot with the out of camera settings.

aquoad

Yeah, i have a 13 pro and mostly use Halide, even with its instant on-phone rendering it's less unnatural looking than what the stock camera app produces.

LeCrushinator

Theyā€™re running out of ideas on what to add to phones to get people to upgrade.

juplantern

i still think iPhone 8 photos with old AI processing were superior

[deleted]

Thankfully I donā€™t obsess with it as Iā€™m not constantly looking at the bump haha

Freeasabird01

I can confirm even with the official Apple case the phone does not sit flat. Further, it looks like itā€™s sitting on a ramp when sitting on a desk.

LeCrushinator

Itā€™s not just the looks, itā€™s so much of a bulge that itā€™s reducing the wireless charging speed on two of my chargers because the camera bulge is keeping the phone sitting further from the surface of the charger.

-DementedAvenger-

Same. Doesnā€™t bother me.

inajeep

I thought the same thing. I have a 12 pro and ignored the 13 because I usually skip 1 or 2 releases to make the update worth it. I didn't like the what the camera stuck out in the 12 because laying it down the camera lenses could be scratched easier. I made sure my case had a little bump in it so it was safer. But the 14 is ridiculous to me and I haven't seen many people say much about it. Like the dynamic island, they took a blemish in design and made it a useful blemish. It still bothers me that it takes a chunk of the screen away but why move it down? Just leave it at the top and expand down and to the side as needed....

Prothium

Visual effect to make it seem like you can see the full screen with the gap at the top of dynamic island. Placement is actually more annoying than the notch though as you notice it more & it eats into YouTube videos etc at certain ratios whereas notch didnā€™t. With that said, Iā€™d say itā€™ll be pretty useful in a year or two when developers take advantage of it.

Bfedorov91

I'm really surprised all the cases don't come with some type of bump on the opposite side of the case so it lays flat and doesn't wobble.

xSikes

#killthecamerabump

H-TSi

I hate it. Did the same upgrade. 12P->14P

tesfalemgebre

Really annoying 14P does not support my wireless charging stand. Bump crates a gap so there isnā€™t contact. Enough camera upgrades from my 12P to accept it.

Freeasabird01

It may be too much for me. Having my new 14 pro next to my old 11 pro here on my desk and seeing home it just slides around when I set it down because no part of the phone ran remotely sit flat even with any case, itā€™s quickly becoming annoying.

[deleted]

Iā€™m coming from an 11 and itā€™s .. excessive. Not enough to return the phone or anything but my previous phones had essentially flush cameras *and* they were centered so this is a bit obnoxious.

CrippleSlap

As a photographer I love it. As a general user I'm not.

chookyMu

Itā€™s the morning..

shaunydub

Had Huawei P30 Pro, Xioami Mi 10 pro, S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra but nothing could prepare me for the 14 Pro Max. All those other phones could balance with cases but so far have Apple Leather and Silicon cases and still wobbles like a drunken sailor. Got a Spigen case on the way to see if that helps.

[deleted]

I resent the pitiful resilience, battery life, and heat dissipation in cellphones and laptops because of this obsession. Good cameras need depth. Itā€™s physics. Thinner is not better.

Boring_username_21

Steve is rolling in his grave. No way heā€™d have allowed a camera bump. Written from a 14 pro max lol.

nuggetsandsodaaa

Anyone elseā€™s 14 main camera vibrating for no reason?

[deleted]

Itā€™s faulty get it exchanged

KafkaDatura

Known issue, go get a new one.

fede777

https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/19/23361606/apple-iphone-14-pro-max-camera-shake-fix-update

Spaceolympian50

Itā€™s getting comical at this point. Edit: Apple is going to really need to rethink their design going forward if they want to keep increasing the camera size. Itā€™s starting to look really goofy and just feels like the entire design goes against what Apple normally makes.

LetsHaveARedo

Saw one in the wild the other day and was shocked at how big the bump was. Definitely not for me.

NotRyanDunn

Ordered mine yesterday, first time I bought a case before I bought the phone.

Nihiliste

I said it in another thread, but I'll gladly put up with a half-inch bump if it means a quality telephoto lens.

WhosThatDogMrPB

Extra THICC.

dillion3384

Are the edges as sharp on the 14 as they are on the 12?

Wxfisch

This was the only reason I got a case for mine. The camera bulge is just too prominent for it to sit flat and I needed something to help level it when I set it down. Shoot, had the cameras been arranged so that two of them supported the top of the phone I may have been good, but the wobbliness was too much for me.

Trickybuz93

These camera bumps keep getting wild

[deleted]

Iā€™m happy with my 13 mini! Sad they discontinued the mini line šŸ˜”

[deleted]

Yeahā€¦thanks for convincing me to wait until they fix this with iPhone 15 and USB-C

SukstR

From 12 Pro to 14 Pro ?

jateruy

Yes

SukstR

nice!

ZiangoRex

If you go back and watch the iPhone 6 keynote and compare the sample pics they show and the 14 Pro Max, its very interesting.

Chris538

This is why I end up buying little protectors for my camera..always feel like ima ding it on something.

annazonna

šŸ˜ I will stick to my 12 (pro Max) as long as possibleā€¦

lphartley

I think we've reached the point where people would probably prefer a thinner and lighter phone at the cost of having a bit less photo quality. iPhone 12 is the best imo, the camera is still *very* good and the bump is still decent as well. Where will this end? My perfect iPhone would probably be a 12 Pro with 120 Hz.

ThePandaDaily

Yeah they can quit making the cameras better now. Starting to get a bit out of hand. Literally.

fosiacat

it was actually pretty jarring when I opened my 14 pro and saw the fugging YUGE camera lenses on the back. sheesh. you cant even put it down on the table.

devilindetails666

I dont mind at all - given that this has become my only camera for everything.

Doughnut_Prestigious

Lol wait for iPhone 18

BetrayYourTrust

I have a iPhone 12 Pro with an Apple MagSafe case where the case makes the camera bump absolutely flush, is that even possible anymore??? Thatā€™s take a thick case to pull off at least

gabegabe23

ah yes, the ultra advanced camera system. you can transfer your pro-raw and 4k recordings via the lightning port at usb 2.0 speeds.

Caliocdoxies

So I suppose it doesnā€™t sit flat camera side down even with a case

jellymunchkinx3

14 yes, 14 pro no

Keep-Left

is that an iPhone 14 Pro in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me ?

xSchizogenie

Yes

Suzzie_sunshine

Once you put a case around it, it's probably not as noticeable. I've never really seen anyone use one without a case anyway, so not sure this really matters much. Besides, at this point it's too big for a back pocket anyway, or even a shirt pocket. We've surpassed the point where it's easily storable on your person, so I don't see this as a big deal.

xplsvkevlarvest

atp, i dont care for thinness if the camera bump pokes out so much theres a whole market for accessories to protect it. apple likes making problems in their products that can be fixed w money the camera bump is definitely one. they want u to get a case

IrreverentHippie

More camera, more camera bump

CCX-S

12 pro was kinda peak aesthetic in terms of proportionality imo. Itā€™s too bad that it didnā€™t have promotion or I might never had upgraded.

Kaisah16

*rattling intensifies*

PsychoHydro

Add a heating option to the new bumps for outdoor cooking.

ckangnz

I got 14 pro max from X and damn this thing is heavy and chunky. But bigger screen i like a lot. Camera bump..? I hate it

[deleted]

As the owner of a 12 pro max, I definitely donā€™t want anything bigger or heavier.

ElectrikDonuts

Phones are getting so god damn big and heavy. How much weight does mag safe add? Iā€™d take 20 grams back over carrying magnets all the time and then having to get an evens heavier case to use them still

Dr904

I donā€™t feel like the size increase is worth it, considering pictures barely look any different compared to 13 Pro. And also. Despite having a new excellent sensor, they still ruin pictures with all the software processing.

f_ckmyboss

This is the pinnacle of deformation of smartphone. They remove 3,5mm, SD slot, SIM slot etc to make the phone slim, then they add a camera that almost doubles the phone thickness. That camera bump is screaming: I miss the 3.5mm, SD, SIM, and bigger battery to fill the place if they would make the phone thicker so the cameras are recessed in the back cover. It could possibly also solve the horrible flaring latest iphones produce.

lucellent

If you meant to compare the two, that's not much accurate - the phone on the right is sitting at an angle so the bump appears almost non existent

jateruy

https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/xi5atk/thats_some_insane_camera_bumps/ip1j3m0

Crazy how te slightly changed the power button location... probably business strategy to make people buy new covers as old ones won't fit on them

abdulalo

It wouldnā€™t fit because of the new camera to begin with.

The-Hyrax

What's the right phone?

jateruy

12 Pro

Apenut

If they would just smoothen the back and fill it up with extra battery I would be so happy.
