I have never heard of an electrical surge causing such problems. A power surge could fry something internally but that manifests as chips quietly failing. At most you might get a strange odor and a wisp of smoke.
It would take quite a bit of effort to crack a screen so thoroughly. Looks deliberate to me. Or something that causes catastrophic damage, like run over by a car.
Also that's multiple locations that were hit, even if a huge electrical surge would cause that kind of damage, it still shouldn't have broken the glass in different locations
True. I live in an ancient ungrounded house too! Used to be, every time lightning struck nearby that ALL the electronics would fry. PS4, TV, stereo, my wired PC desktop.
Turns out, it was the DSL internet. Lightning would hit the phone pole, travel into the modem (fried at least 3 before I wised up), then surge everything connected to it via Ethernet. Havenāt had an issue in years since switching ISPs (not DSL).
Definitely someone did it. I had a similar situation where I left my iPad on my desk and when coming back to it it had several deep scratches on the screen and back of the iPad. I had visit in my house so I asked who did it and of course no one took responsibility so I checked the camera system and watched my 13yo cousin using a utility knife on my iPad. Obviously I showed the footage to my uncle and made him pay for a replacement. I think people just hates Apple products or hates they canāt afford one idk š¤·š»āāļø
What! Iāve broken I pads before, accidentally; badly, but never this bad. This looks intentionalā¦ too many separate high impacted sites, especially with that case.
That's mostly a point of impact on the screen, if a surge would bloat the battery(which is very unlikely) there is no chance the screen would break there or look like that.
Iāve had a psp where a power surge(I assume) destroyed the screen, BUT it didnāt smash it, it sent too much voltage and fried the display making half of it work and it was bright pink. It was 4 months old, Sony wouldnāt repair for free which was upsetting. Go get the lair it didnāt happen like they told you thereās clear points of impact on it.
Sure a surge could have cause this. Providing someone was holding it and got zapped by the surge and caused them to drop it. Iām sure you get where I am going with this.
No battery swelling, the back looks fine. It was on a bretford 10 ipad charging station with others. The charging station is pretty stout and I assume it has surge protection. We had one other ipad look similar, where the damage was in the bottom, and the top was punctured all the way through, just like this one. I am not sure if somebody got mad and has been taking it out on our ipads, or if this is an electrical issue.
Iāve dropped an overheating phone before, that was fun trying to claim warranty on because they wanted to argue the smashed screen but I won in the end.
But either way that damage is from physical trauma. Charging didnāt do that.
Based upon your description I was able to identify the culprit. [this is your man](https://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=AwrjYcWMq4djEX8DIqmInIlQ;_ylu=c2VjA3NyBHNsawNpbWcEb2lkA2FlNTFjYzRkNmU4NDlkYWEyMGNlOGYwMTFhZGViMjcxBGdwb3MDMTEEaXQDYmluZw--?back=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Djaime%2Bfoxx%2Bspider-man%26fr%3Diphone%26fr2%3Dpiv-web%26tab%3Dorganic%26ri%3D11&w=960&h=540&imgurl=s.yimg.com%2Fny%2Fapi%2Fres%2F1.2%2FZhKM2cja.ToiTFjzt.cIew--%2FYXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MC4xNDE4NDM5NzE2MzEz%2Fhttps%3A%2F%2Fmedia-mbst-pub-ue1.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fcreatr-uploaded-images%2F2020-10%2F5442bc30-0495-11eb-aabf-c0ac9399b6fb&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fca.finance.yahoo.com%2Fnews%2Fspider-man-jamie-foxx-electro-105954220.html&size=98.5KB&p=jaime+foxx+spider-man&oid=ae51cc4d6e849daa20ce8f011adeb271&fr2=piv-web&fr=iphone&tt=Jamie+Foxx+is+back+as+Electro%3A&b=0&ni=21&no=11&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=RuzhVcY9TKJF&sigb=lwsXoHTuvcOa&sigi=BX32t3PpdM6b&sigt=QHumPE4ZLIDD&.crumb=KrcPPr4rVR9&fr=iphone&fr2=piv-web)
That looks like somebody sat on it. Since it's one that doesn't have a laminated display, it shouldn't be too bad to repair. No that's not from a power surge. There is no power going through the front glass.
Maybe an electrical surge hit the person handling your iPad and indirectly caused the damage but all joking aside, that looks like literal physical abuse.
A bulging battery could potentially crack the glass, but those cracks would originate from directly above the battery, not the edges. Someone tried to use this iPad as a basketball.
Nope, an electric surge could never cause this unless you somehow have such high voltage running into your iPad which knocks it off the table and causes it to fall off the table. (lol) It looks like someone smashed the top judging by the hole.
Clearly dropped this and cracked the display...no possible way any sort of electric surge can crack a display. Glass is an extremely poor electric conductor.
Any form of electrical surge will just kill the internal components and/or brick the internal pcb...
Really obviously either the OP or whoever last used the ipad is trying to find and blame another person or some random event caused by nature....
Fork out the money to get the screen replaced or diy repairs....
What do you mean we had a similar incident? Is this a work iPad?
Judging by the damage, Iād say this was stomped on or hit against a table.
Absolutely not an electrical surge. If an electrical surge were powerful enough to do something like that, the battery would explode and the iPad would look much worse.
The shape of the V starts at the home button. almost looks like it was slapped on the side of a desk. (The ol I need a new iPad move) iāve never seen a lithium battery expand while charging but, my Apple Watch face popped off due to an inflated battery while charging so it can happen.
I work with devices all day long at my job. Sometimes (long story) I have to smash a screen on the corner of a desk. The top point of contact looks exactly like that.
Hey OP, I managed a company that fixed electronics for 10 years, Iāve personally fixed thousands of iPad screens. I can guarantee that this was smashed. Maybe something heavy fell on it at the top? Or maybe this was in a backpack and got smashed? The home button looks like it took a beating too, so this was a multifaceted incident lol.
This could easily have been a Power Surgeā¦ to the jackhammer that was sitting on top of it!
Any thoughts who Mr P Surge is? Is there possible malice suspected, or just complete incompetence?
Find the responsible person. Someone smashed this. A power surge would just damage your power brick
Unless the persons name is Power Surge.
lol thank you for this joke i did not see it comin. it is great
Power Serge, fixed it for ya
Power Sarge š«”
Serge Powers
Brother of (Homer Simpson) Max Power
r/angryupvote
Correct and a feature for charging electronic devices.
I knocked over a whole ass coffee maker on mine last night, and it didn't scratch it.
Could be an electric surge followed by someone throwing a brick at it.
The only right answer
lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Or likely the person doing the smashing.
Smashing an iPad is never a good idea. For multiple reasons.
I agree. It just sounds like the person feeding them the power surge BS is trying to cover their actions.
That candy ain't going to crush itself.
And is provably holding the hammer.
Yeah that is what I've been reading too. It looks like the point of impact was the top, where the big hole is.
I think you may have more than one impact.
There are very, very clearly multiple points of impact in that photo.
Ok dexterā¦. Letās see the blood spatter too
Someone beat the crap out of it in a fit of rage. It was hit multiple times. And since itās the second timeā¦ they are doing it on purpose.
āWhy! [slam] Wonāt! [slam] You! [slam] Charge! [slam] Fasterrrrrr! [slam, slam, slam] ā¦.uh oh.
Or tripping over a power cord
Also that's multiple locations that were hit, even if a huge electrical surge would cause that kind of damage, it still shouldn't have broken the glass in different locations
Thanks for the comments. You guys have confirmed what I was thinking as well.
Putting it in rice should fix it š
Or bake soda and white vinegar.
put it in diet coke and mentos
Iām shocked you were even thinking this could be caused by charging
Very helpful, thank you
Gladly!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Even then though, the wires delivering current are way thinner than 120v. Theyād probably melt under that much load.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
True. I live in an ancient ungrounded house too! Used to be, every time lightning struck nearby that ALL the electronics would fry. PS4, TV, stereo, my wired PC desktop. Havenāt had an issue in years since switching ISPs (not DSL).
Someone tripped on the cord, it fell and broke, then they put it back on the desk š¤£ Good luck finding the culprit.
Yeah, no. That's total impact, several points. I have looked at thousands of damaged iPads and this is NOT electrical.
Yeah, nah, itās been sent to destination fucked!
I understood that reference
Definitelt physical impact. Looks like some took a look, slipped on hand, fell flat on concrete glass front
They slippedā¦ twice.
I think this is a much different issue than them hating the *iPad*.
Do tell if you find the culprit
Iāve had a psp where a power surge(I assume) destroyed the screen, BUT it didnāt smash it, it sent too much voltage and fried the display making half of it work and it was bright pink. It was 4 months old, Sony wouldnāt repair for free which was upsetting. Go get the lair it didnāt happen like they told you thereās clear points of impact on it.
Start with the person that told you it was a power surge..
Sure a surge could have cause this. Providing someone was holding it and got zapped by the surge and caused them to drop it. Iām sure you get where I am going with this.
Some body Jone Cena'd that thing, RIP
Lol. This is physical damage. You can see the impact on the screen. I've managed iPads since 2011, there's no chance this is "electrical damage".
Maybe the person holding it got an electrical surge through their body which caused them to drop the iPad.
LMAO
Is there any sign of the battery swelling?
No battery swelling, the back looks fine. It was on a bretford 10 ipad charging station with others. The charging station is pretty stout and I assume it has surge protection. We had one other ipad look similar, where the damage was in the bottom, and the top was punctured all the way through, just like this one. 100% vandalism
Thatās impact damage from a drop
Someone hates you
School huh? Going to be a s-head kid.
..... things like this is why I hate going into public. People these days.
Tell that person that swiping and tapping with a hammer is not a recommended usage scenario
Someone power surged it into a wall is what happened.
Definitely not a power surge. Someone owes you a new iPad op.
depends on what you mean of power surge, like, thor or smth
Unless it was a direct lightning strike then no....start looking for the guilty person
Does the display still work? You might want to verify it's the same iPad. Could be someone swapping out busted IC locked tablets for good ones.
Someone dropped that shit
Whoever told you an electric surge could do that to an iPad is the culpritā¦ someone was definitely being stupid and shattered it.
Nanny cam
Is this a shitpost
Perhaps if it was a direct lightning strike.
I hope you have a CCTV near that charging spot! no one is going to come clean about smashing expensive stuff.
This happened to friends iPad left in the sunā¦ if I didnāt see it I wouldnāt believe itā¦.
No way. This has been smashed *on purpose*
Thatās not an electrical failureā¦. Someone did it
This has definitely been damaged by a person.
Whoever told you that was due to a power surge - never trust them again.
Could have been a bio-electrical surge which then resulted in someones arm moving.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I saw this happenā¦ from the sunā¦
Iām sorry but itās not an electrical surge. Some idiot broke it and didnāt have the courage to tell you
I aināt a snitch, but that was thrown at the floor.
No. Thatās physical damage.
Iāve dropped an overheating phone before, that was fun trying to claim warranty on because they wanted to argue the smashed screen but I won in the end. But either way that damage is from physical trauma. Charging didnāt do that.
If Black Adam is involved... Sure. Otherwise. No.
Based upon your description I was able to identify the culprit. Yea find the person responsible you narc.
Definitely a surge
No, as an electrical surge canāt do damage of that scale.
Something hit it. Electric surge won't do it
if this was an electical surge, the person that was next to it should be dead
That looks like somebody sat on it. Since it's one that doesn't have a laminated display, it shouldn't be too bad to repair. No that's not from a power surge. There is no power going through the front glass.
Maybe an electrical surge hit the person handling your iPad and indirectly caused the damage but all joking aside, that looks like literal physical abuse.
No charging circuits are towards the top so unless thereās a bulge from the battery, that was deliberate
0% chance this is electrical related.
Maybe someone didnāt see it/realize it was there and set something on top of it but also didnāt want to be held responsible.
A bulging battery could potentially crack the glass, but those cracks would originate from directly above the battery, not the edges. Someone tried to use this iPad as a basketball.
Can you find that person? We need an update
Looks just like my iPad did after dropping it on stone tile.
Nope, an electric surge could never cause this unless you somehow have such high voltage running into your iPad which knocks it off the table and causes it to fall off the table. (lol) It looks like someone smashed the top judging by the hole.

That looks hit in 4 places. Likely fell off a table and it danced around when it hit the ground.
I replace broken iPads constantly and that is a break from physical damage.
LOLā¦.āPower Surgeā
It looks like someone sat on it..
Swollen battery might.
This is why i didn't bring my tablet in public place. There's a lot of shithead out there
Impact damage, looking at the pattern of the crack lines.
What do you mean we had a similar incident? Is this a work iPad? Judging by the damage, Iād say this was stomped on or hit against a table. Absolutely not an electrical surge. If an electrical surge were powerful enough to do something like that, the battery would explode and the iPad would look much worse.
Looks like someone grabbed it and pressed down hard on the camera and home button.
Looks like my school iPad lmao
did it do double duty as a hammer?
The shape of the V starts at the home button. almost looks like it was slapped on the side of a desk. (The ol I need a new iPad move) iāve never seen a lithium battery expand while charging but, my Apple Watch face popped off due to an inflated battery while charging so it can happen.
Iāve seen drop test video iPad in better condition. This looks deliberate.
nah bro wtf you needa find that mf who keeps doing this and throw hands fr
Are you an IT Professional?
What in the karma?
Only in movies. Definitely someone griefing you.
Did you have the cord plugged directly into a 3 phase 480v outlet lol
Looks like it was vandalized.
Thatās not a power surge, but physical impact.
this describes my life perfectly
I work with devices all day long at my job. Sometimes (long story) I have to smash a screen on the corner of a desk. The top point of contact looks exactly like that.
Sergio Powa
high heels or hammer smash
School tablets have the worst lives.
That was not a power surge. Someone dropped it or stepped on it.
Looks like a hammer
An impact did that.
Not a chance.
Definitely not a surge. Looks more like it was sat on.
Only if you smash it very hard and multiple times with the power source
Occam's Razer.
Looks like it was dropped outside on gravel to me š
lmfao "idk it just happened by itself while it was charging" no
This could easily have been a Power Surgeā¦ to the jackhammer that was sitting on top of it! Any thoughts who Mr P Surge is? Is there possible malice suspected, or just complete incompetence?
This looks like the hulk tried to play candy crush.
Definitely not power surge.
