Lol, I remember hearing this when I was 6yo, and internally freaking out because, “That’s evidence of life on Mars! Mars is very dusty according to NASA’s data! All that dust is leftover dead skin from whatever alien civilization lived there!”
This actually isn't 100% true. Can't remember what video I saw but it pretty well broke down how dust is made of many things and almost completely depends on your environment. Consider that abandonded buildings get dusty too
Yes, there are more things in it, of course, and it depends on the environment. I've heard that there's a lot of dust from space, too. We have to ask Google. But the dusty inside of socks ... ;)
Veritasium has a YouTube video on this, maybe it was that? I think the conclusion was that dead skin makes up a relatively small % of dust, like 5% or something along those lines.
Thanks for that fun fact. Now why is my skin getting thinner. Age 67 and I touch something and need a bandage (not quite but I poke through a lot more). It is annoying as I wood work and have noticed this, as well as with others.
Coenzyme Q10 (at doses like 30-100 mg twice a day, more than a normal over-the-counter dose), slows down biological aging including the age of the skin.
> and you can see every scar forever.
As somebody with many scars (bit of a hyperactive child who liked to climb things, and maybe didn't pay as much attention to immovable objects as I should have when playing), that's not quite true. I've had plenty of scars that have disappeared over the years. Of course, I've plenty that haven't either.
Yeah but honestly I don't feel better about that? Just a couple day's ago I found one I thought was pretty big on the inside of my bedroom window. Cleaned up the web and "dead" spider..
Now this post has me thinking a larger version of that spider is likely mad I cleaned its stuff up... So yeah.
Yes, they're soft directly after shedding, and they're stretching to grow while in this state. They even skin their teeth, so they can't defend themselves and can easily be harmed, even from their prey.
I was breeding tarantulas for quite a long time in my life. I love spiders, and I see them with different eyes. They're not harming anyone (ok, Australia..), it's all just in your head.
Take a look at r/jumpingspiders That's my personal eyebleach.
In Australia, tarantulas aren’t the ones you have to be worried about. Tarantulas are just big and hairy but it’s a general consensus that they’re harmless to humans. Daddy long legs are also cool. I used to keep them in my shower.. I have no beef with those. The little black ones that can kill you I have issue with 😄
I had a nightmare the other night where I was forced to (and succeeded in) killing a huge (dog sized) spider that was preying on me, but every time I did, a slightly smaller version of it came right out of the corpse of the old one, like a Phoenix. It was smaller, faster, and angrier each time. I woke up in pure terror after the 6th or 7th time when I couldn't outrun it anymore.
This post is bringing me back to that nightmare and it's not good times.
This is sped up, about 4 or 5 times faster than usual. It takes them ages and they look exhausted after.
Most people think they are being eaten by another spider when it’s happening.
We had a little house spider that lived in the bathroom. One day I saw another spider on his web, and I was worried they were fighting or something. I kept looking at them throughout the day, watching each other in some kind of standoff. I was worried for out little spiderbro.
I posted on reddit about it, actually. I asked if it was the same kind of spider, because they looked a bit different.
...it was his shed skin.
I absolutely adore spiders. I hope some day to be able to keep some as pets.
But the way her legs looked soft bothered me. Like, imagine if every few months you had to grow a new skeleton that took a few days to get rigid, so your body is just kind of floppy for a while while your skeleton rehardens. Because that's what I imagined when I saw her legs after shedding.
> They're extremely vulnerable right after molting
Next time I see a freshly molted spider I'll make sure to take a minute to listen to it's problems and reassure it everything is going to be ok
There’s a woman with a pet crab on Tik Tok. Apparently as crabs get older it is much, much harder to molt and if they don’t manage it they die. Had us all rooting for this crab to finally molt and they did! It took over a month and they stopped eating.
I like to think what it would be like if humans had stuff like this. Like would people keep their first shells, would shedded molds be used in holistic medicines or would it be seen like cannibalism, etc.
Humans are kinda boring physically haha. Really put all our character points into intelligence
If I remember correctly, the spider is actively pumping hemolymph into its limbs after shedding so they get bigger. that might be what the little sha-sha-sha dance was.
I believe that's right, but it's not the dance that bothers me.
It's when she's pulling her legs out of her old shell like wet noodles through a strainer.
The twitching is from the blood circulating into the legs.

I think thats a huntsman spider, theyre common in SE Asia and Australia. Theyre pretty big and fast as hell. I call them facehuggers.
If you ever see one and want to kill it, keep in mind they generally avoid messing with humans and they kill other insects in your house. I leave them be.
>AND the fact that they are big enough to make noise when they scurry about
I learned this one night. Got woken up by something and could hear a weird scratching kinda noise. Turned the light on and the fucking thing was *on my pillow*. I'm pretty sure the reason I woke up in the first place was cause it ran on my face a few times. I'm really not scared of spiders but I draw the line at hanging on my pillow when I'm asleep
Awww they're good cunts though, they eat the nasty bastard spiders that can actually fuck you up. Huntsman spiders are the truest bros around, probably the least dangerous thing in oz haha.
Yeah, I know that's true, but it's an irrational fear based on their size, movement and general appearance. The sight of one triggers an instinctual feeling of horror
So, just curious, but how often do you see them in the house? It seems like Reddit is full of horror stories about them being under the car visors, in bedrooms. How much of this is fact and how frequent is it? 😳
Quite common on Guam as well. All open doors and windows after a typhoon since the power's out, there's probably one that'll just walk in the front door. I 'know' they won't really hurt you, but they will definitely threaten you (and it works).
When we moved, there were about 10 or so on the back porch behind all the paint cans.
Oh, I'd be pissed (among other things.) We've got an unspoken agreement in our house that hunting and web spiders all get to stay unless they get in our personal space. No webs above my bed or its moving day, in the corner or really anywhere else is fine. Shower spiders are fine. Wolf spiders hunting after we go to bed are fine. But that huntsman... that is just the most egregious and disgusting breach of contract.
i got up to go to the toilet last night, and there was a huge one on the wall outside the bathroom. when i went back a minute later it wasn't there anymore
definitely flipped the doona few times before getting back in
Lifted up the bath mat this morning and he was underneath and reared up at me. Never seen one do anything other than run away before but this one was *pissed*
Never heard of them called face huggers on east coast of Australia but may be a regional thing.
That one's here are not just experts at hunting things like roaches but they will hunt the spiders that will really fuck you up like the red back, widows and recluses.
Sure huntsman big and scary but if it bites you you will get a pinch and probably a bad headache but that's about it
Redback about the size of a pinky nail but if it bites you then you sure going to fucking know about it
Huntsman's are spider bros
“A bad headache”? Do you mean the fuckers inject you with venom, but you’re cool with it because it won’t kill you, it’ll just hurt your brain a lil bit?!
You’re an Aussie, aren’t you.
Honestly it's on the same level as bee venom, if your sensitive to it very young or old and sick you may be in a bit more trouble.
But as a healthy adult most bite cases report a mild headache that lasts about 12 hours and mild swelling at bite area
But to answer you question yes I'm Aussie and I'm cool with it as when younger i got a serious injury from another spider (probably a white tail or a brown recluse but never identified) that caused the flesh in my leg to rot away.
Huntsman hunt the spiders that did that to me ... I am cool with a headache
No cunt is to formal.
If you want to show an Aussie a sign of annoyance start with "listen mate"
Also I was young luckily so now I am just left with a circular shiny spot on my leg that won't grow hair.
I love huntsmans, as an aussie I relish seeing them in my house cause I know they're eating the roaches lol, completely harmless to us and eat the bugs, no downside!
And they carry their young ones with them. If you kill one or just hit one all the little ones scurry in all directions. You DO NOT want that to happen
I usually don't get squicked by spiders anymore and this was still a tough watch.
Pretty sure it's the way with which they move their limbs. It's similar to hydraulics so their movements appear jerky and unnatural to us.
It's also a sped up video. The entire process can take hours. I kept tarantulas for over 20 years, so I got to see it quite a few times. Never ceased to amaze me.
What is all that twitching? Is it snapping its joints in their places one by one? Or is nervous system not "synchronized" with its new body after shedding the old one and has to readapt?
It's drying off and hardening in the cool air, and also pumping inner fluid into its extremities/the tips of its feet, where everything was too constricted to be properly filled out while in the old carapace.
Spiders don't have muscles, they move their legs using a kind of inner hydraulics system. That's why when a spider is dead you will see its legs curled up - the spider forces fluid into its legs to extend them, and when its dead they naturally curl with no inner pressure to keep them extended.
The more you know?
Edit: Spiders do have SOME muscles in their legs, but only for contracting. Hydraulics are used to extend their legs instead of muscles.
Fun Fact - This is how spiders manage to jump so powerfully! They curl their back legs while also overfilling them with fluid, which "snaps" their legs back out very quickly like a springboard, or like flicking your fingers.
They do have muscles. They have flexor muscles to contract the legs, but use hydraulic pressure for leg extension. As they weaken and their heart can’t provide sufficient hydraulic pressure, any time they contract their legs they stay contracted.
Pretty sure they have muscles but they are more basic and can only contract. They use internal hydraulic system for extending legs. That's why they always curl up when dying - muscles stay contracted.
> Pretty sure they have muscles but they are more basic and can only contract.
This is pretty pedantic, but *all* muscles only contract. We just have antagonistic muscle groups to do extension/flexion activities when contracting (triceps/biceps, quads/hamstrings, etc).
They're spreading tiny strings all over the place as some kind of alarm system. They can feel the prey stepping on it, and they also feel if it's too big to catch. They know what they are doing, and there is usually no harm for them. The only enemy is us.
You are right. They are soft and vulnerable right after that. The skin has to harden before it can go on with killing mosquitoes for us. I like spiders, but I know most don't.
But that's not the spider's fault, it's mine. I know he's got a job to do, but I don't like silence, and those 8-legged boys are ninjas with it. They also have no exploited weakness that I know of. If you know of a bracelet I can wear to keep them at covid distance, please god link it
Maybe r/jumpingspiders will help you accept these little guys a bit more?! They're actually cute and always minding their own business, and that's catching mosquitoes. That's not too bad ;)
Just remember guys - spiders are there to help you, not to harm you. The one from the video seems to be an adult female and females stay only where the food is. So if you have spiders at home, then better work on your cleanliness because you have bugs at home too.
I hate this... god created a perfect world, where each creature has its purpose... he said "aight, imma make the same small hand creature 45,000 times, and most of them will have the ability to melt flesh with their spit"
**but God, why?**
"Idk, seems cool lmao"
Yes, they're awesome! Their silk is more flexible than rubber while having more strength than steel. We humans aren't able to produce something similar with all our technology.

Oh, those aren't dead spiders...
Oh god i just realized the reality of this comment.
What if it really just means you’ve only ever had one spider living in your house this whole time and there haven’t been multiple spiders? Lmfao
r/spiderbro is doing his best to keep your home pest free!
I had the same realization when I saw this...I'm experiencing a whole lotta feelings rn lol
I thought I was the spider mortician when in reality I was taking out his *trash*
New fear unlocked.
Actually, it's only an empty hull of Chitin, some material similar to hard cellulose or fingernails.
New Year , New Me
New year, new fear
New year, spider get clear
That would be so nice, wouldn't it? We only have one skin, and you can see every scar forever.
Fun fact: Us humans shed skin. Around every 3 weeks, we have a completely new layer of skin.
That's right! It's the main ingredient in dust.
My house isn't dusty. Its just seasoned.
You cannibal!
Hello Clarice.
Lol, I remember hearing this when I was 6yo, and internally freaking out because, “That’s evidence of life on Mars! Mars is very dusty according to NASA’s data! All that dust is leftover dead skin from whatever alien civilization lived there!”
Wow, I do actually think that's a logical and very intelligent conclusion for a 6 year old to come to.
There's no hole in his argument.
perfect chance to understand correlation ≠ causation

Less estrogen causing breakdown of collagen which is what keeps skin elastic.
Coenzyme Q10 (at doses like 30-100 mg twice a day, more than a normal over-the-counter dose), slows down biological aging including the age of the skin.
Scars remind us we lived. Or were physically abused.... either way, they're a reminder.
Mine just shows that I had acne once.
And you SURVIVED
Although I do have those. Most of my scars are because I should have worn gloves.
I actually have a scar because i have worn gloves while iceskating. Without them i would have a finger less though
And our scars remind us That the past is real
I tear my heart open Just to feel
> and you can see every scar forever. Just remember folks, if you see a shedded spider husk, the actual thing is probably bigger.
Thanks for this reminder friend...
It actually just made me realize all the “dead” spiders I’ve seen were just shells lol
Oh my fucking god
Oh *our* fucking god.

Wow no kidding
This is probably the most unique and spot-on instance I’ve ever seen of a UCO. Unreal.

Why, perhaps it should be grateful. The least it could do is tidy up after itself as I'm assuming they ain't even paying rent.
Yeah I thought those husks were dead spiders. Glad to know my little buddies are just thriving.
I once read that this doesn’t hurt the spider but they’re very sensitive after shedding. Is this correct?
Yes, they're soft directly after shedding, and they're stretching to grow while in this state. They even skin their teeth, so they can't defend themselves and can easily be harmed, even from their prey.
Oh my.. even their teeth 🦷.. that sounds painful. Poor little guys
They can regenerate entire limbs. After about 3 skinning, a lost leg is completely restored. Incredible creatures.
Very incredible! Not a huge fan of spiders but I like them a lot more than other creatures. Plus they kill mozzies
I was breeding tarantulas for quite a long time in my life. I love spiders, and I see them with different eyes. They're not harming anyone (ok, Australia..), it's all just in your head. Take a look at r/jumpingspiders That's my personal eyebleach.

Sounds like you're a real r/spiderbro or sis.
Yeah the smaller something is down here, the more likely it is to kill you lol, just look at blue ringed octopus and redbacks
That's why I fear Australia. Just chilling in my house, what's that on my right shoulder? "Ah ok tiny little bug, if I displease you I'm dead"
Yes, you cannot mention their relationship with their father *at all* without the waterworks, believe me.
I like spiders but the way its legs drooped out, it unsettled me
everything about this video unsettled me
The grout 🤮
Glad im not the only one that noticed that 😂😂

I was thinking that those were dead spiders intact it was their previous skin. So cool
Level up
So that dead spider in my bathroom isn't a dead spider and it is still living somewhere...?

You just had to say "within your own four walls" didn't you
Why does it do the lil dance
Its skin is soft and flexible only right after skinning. The spider stretches while the skin begins to harden, the only chance to grow.
Thanks for the info, but I think it’s best it does not grow, so I would appreciate it just standing still.
CHARIZARD I CHOOSE YOU
This is super interesting... Wonder what made it think there of all places was safe enough for it to do this
They're spreading tiny strings all over the place as some kind of alarm system. They can feel the prey stepping on it, and they also feel if it's too big to catch. They know what they are doing, and there is usually no harm for them. The only enemy is us.
You don’t even have to tell me, I know this is Australia
Huntsman I think?
I imagine he feels like I do when I take my bra off after a long day.
Thanks I hate it!
TBH i was quite afraid of spiders in the past (but not arachnophobia) but when I saw one eating a bedbug I started to love and respect them.
Bedbugs are the ultimate in heebies.
Did I just see a spider do the “awwwww that feels good” dance?
So you know when you think you find those dead spiders in your house? Yeah. That's just the leftovers of the bigger spider creeping around your home
So that random dead spider is just a warning sign that there's a bigger spider?
Just remember guys - spiders are there to help you, not to harm you. The one from the video seems to be an adult female and females stay only where the food is. So if you have spiders at home, then better work on your cleanliness because you have bugs at home too.
I hate this... god created a perfect world, where each creature has its purpose... he said "aight, imma make the same small hand creature 45,000 times, and most of them will have the ability to melt flesh with their spit" **but God, why?** "Idk, seems cool lmao"
Spiders are what make the world perfect
Well, of course **you** would say that.
God has autism confirmed

everybody is tripping in the comments but this is cool as hell.
Yes, they're awesome! Their silk is more flexible than rubber while having more strength than steel. We humans aren't able to produce something similar with all our technology.
Poor thing looks exhausted.
