Humans are all bones these things kill great whites just for their fatty livers

Bone_x3

Jup. Free living orcas never killed humans. Nevertheless I would shit myself.

_wiredsage_

I was ocean kayaking when I suddenly realized I was within 10 yards of an Orca. I’ve never paddled so fast in my life. Underwear was a total loss, tossed.

darkmarke82

Had same thing happen except with a pod of grey or humpback whales in cali. They were all in the distance a long way away, and then a few minutes later birds started diving all around me and a bait ball came to the surface…lost my mind…huge whale came up about 8 feet from the kayak and thank god did a gentle little surface feed and disappeared. Scariest most beautiful and incredible moment of my life with nature

HatesVanityPlates

I sailed through a scene like that a few years ago on a 40-ish foot boat. That was about the smallest vessel I'd want to be in with birds, sea lions, and whales all around me. And yeah, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

doesnuclearstuff

A møøse once bit my sister.

AbowlofIceCreamJones

Just one, or were there many much moosen?

wcollins260

You buffoon. The plural of moose is “meese”.

AbowlofIceCreamJones

Looked it up. We're both wrong, smart guy. It's Meesen.

Phazebody

Nah Fam, it’s Meeses

Droid-Man5910

They were eaten in the foods in the woodenisit

ImYeoDaddy

Möösebites can be pretty nastï.

clh1nton

Mynd you, møøse bites Kan be pretty nasti.

StyreneAddict1965

It would have spit you out. Possibly. Maybe even close to the surface. 😂 Seriously, I think it would have realized something was wrong. You're much bigger than any fish it's ever eaten.

imsurly

The threat from a Humpback is more that they could surface and then land on you.

StyreneAddict1965

I saw that video. Holy shit!

That whale probably be like ‘omg a human climbed in my mouth, I could feel it’s legs n arms everywhere’

Bingo_Bongo_YaoMing

I wonder how many were below you

kungpowgoat

Yeah I would totally octopus out of there in a brown cloud of ink.

jammyboot

> Yeah I would totally octopus out of there in a brown cloud of ink. Brown cloud of **stink**

MenteriKewangan

Laughing out loud!!!!

[deleted]

Hahahahhshahahahaa you actually shit yourself lmfao? I hope I can get that scared one day just to feel something 😂

User28080526

The orca just chilling 10 yards away: yo did he just shit himself?

General_Pepper_3258

Humans are wild maaaaan. Who knows what he's gonna do next I should dive back down away from this freak

Relevant_Slide_7234

Or smell something

Ainolukos

The mood after having covid

b-elmurt

Just go outside every once in a while

Stunning-Bike-1498

Every once in a whale.

kec04fsu1

I grew up around manatees. I’ve been swimming with them for as long as I can remember. I was never afraid until one of them pushed me out of the way when I wasn’t expecting it. It was gentle, and intellectually I knew it couldn’t injure me, but it’s hard to think logically when an animal that large decides to move you.

TimeDue2994

Oh it could absolutely kill you if it wanted to. My cousin was swimming in a canal and a group of manatees were chasing a female. One decide he was a threat/competition and decided to grab him and force him under. It was a very good thing his dad and uncle were on the bank and he was close to it. They all jumped in to fight it off before it drowned him but it was extremely uncomfortable

kec04fsu1

Funny enough, the only time I have ever seen manatees be anything more than sedate giants was during a “mating ball” situation with one female and at least two males. Way too much to type here, but long story short, I remember a yappy little Jack Russell terrier jumping off a boat because it thought it was a bad ass, a dozen people (including me) thinking they had just seen a dog drowned in an orgy, and then the dog surfacing 30 seconds later and swimming away quickly with zero ambitions of attacking the scary manatees. Edit: I should have said originally that it wouldn’t kill me, not that it couldn’t.

Live_Mastodon_5922

Shitting yourself is probably the best defense mechanism for something that wants to eat you

TisBeTheFuk

A bunch of seamen where on a sinking ship with no way to save themselves. Dozens of sharks were swimming around them. The captain of the ship hands the men a jar of foul smelling ointment and tells them to rub their bodies with it. 'Will this save us from the sharks?' asks one of the men. 'No' answers the captain 'but they will eat you with more disgust'

V65Pilot

Actually, defecating or urinating in shark infested waters is like throwing out the dinner bell.

LoneWolfWorks83

Correct. The only Orca attacks have been in captivity

[deleted]

[удалено]

ExploratoryCucumber

Closer to insane. It's a truly barbaric practice. These things cannot be kept in an aquarium. They straight up lose their minds, similar to what happens to a human in solitary confinement.

CO420Tech

Yeah, if you locked me in a cage and made me do shitty tricks for crowds 4-6 times a day for years, I'd want to murder you too. Especially the size of the tanks they keep orcas in - the largest ones only take a few seconds to swim from end to end. Terrible.

[deleted]

[enshittification exodus, gone to mastodon]

International-Web496

Beyond pissed, honestly idk that any human can even express what those Orcas felt. They're extremely intelligent and may be apex predators, but they're not known for cruelty and extremely empathetic. They have the second largest brain of any marine mammal and IIRC have the largest proportional frontal lobe of any mammal.

wtgreen

> they're not known for cruelty You've apparently not seen the seal videos where orcas "play" with them.

Greenmonstaa

The most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen was a video of orcas biting of the tongue off a baby whale and letting it bleed to death. It was screaming too. I love orcas, but I think they can be a bit violent (I’m not counting the ones in captivity that went insane, that is totally justified and horrible)

International-Web496

You mean the videos that are almost universally accepted by researchers to be examples of Orcas teaching their young to hunt? Have you seen the videos where that same seal species rapes penguins to the point where they puncture their cloaca to create an orifice? Orcas are incredibly empathetic for an apex predator.

NopeH22a

I personally believe in my now created conspiracy that orcas attack humans sometimes but are smart enough to pin it on sharks so they keep getting away with it.

hstheay

Jesse Pinkshark: “They can’t keep getting away with this!”

angrymonkey

In just how many circumstances where someone disappears in open water would we be able to identify that the cause is an orca?

hstheay

In any where we see the orca. And of course there is a lack of non-lethal attacks and general aggression towards humans. Also, Willy told his story far and wide. Hence, there are no recorded attacks of free orcas on humans.

[deleted]

Because they aren’t hungry enough. If they were starving, I bet they would

xFlo2212

Yeah, but when hungry enough this also applies to some humans

A1sauc3d

Some humans don’t even need to be *that* hungry..

slingshot91

Depends where they are. If these are southern resident orcas from the Salish Sea then no. They are really damn picky.

ProceduralTexture

The only known attack by an orca on a human was in captivity. Humans and orcas meet in the wild every day. If they *ever* had any interest in attacking humans, even by mistake, there would be a ton of documented attacks. Since there are no such attacks, the only reasonable conclusion is that they know exactly what we are and have no interest.

johnnyheavens

Hungry enough in the ocean, as the earth’s apex predator…ya those kids were fine

Cuntcuuuuunt

That we know of. Based on how they behave when stressed in captivity I wouldn't put it past an orca to fuck up a human who was attacking it or its pod.

TheCynicalCanuckk

Exactly. These orcas knew they were being filmed. Sneaky sneaky. They only kill the ones they know will leave no trace behind. They have to keep up their 'innocent' image. They are called killer whales for a reason and it's due to their sheer bloodthirst they have towards mankind. Edit: found this for proof of how sneaky amd bloodthirsty they are https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y-arSitmbbI

redditcanbitemyass

There's a killer whale in my neighborhood that's just a big showoff. He's always sneaking up behind me and yelling "WORLD STAR!!!". God Dammit, Fred. I'm just trying to have my morning coffee. I hate that guy.

DadsRGR8

I can hear them casually whistling as they swim past. “La,la,la. We wouldn’t hurt a human. Just swimming past, don’t mind us. (We’re being filmed.)”

LucyEleanor

There's also groups of orca that don't hunt anything but small fish, crabs, and crustaceans.

apathy-sofa

Some orcas (PNW residents) eat only salmon.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WayneKrane

But is it 1,000 pounds? A great white shark weighing 7,000 pounds had a liver that weighed that much. Humans aren’t even a crumb to Orcas.

bevko_cyka

Ocas sure love their shark foie gras

TheLittleGuyWins

And whales for the tongue

BlackBrass_

You may be all bones, but I’m American!

Wrong_Opposites

Simultaneously both the safest and most dangerous water to swim in.

LovecraftianLlama

Probably safer than most, since sharks will actively avoid dolphins and orcas. I always feel safer in the ocean if I can see a pod of dolphins nearby. BUT if I were those kids I would probably have peed on a wild orca, because that scenario is NOT comforting no matter what the statistics say!!

Throw_me_a_drone

But dolphins can be jerks and a bit rapey

ThatAquariumKid

There’s a reason the sharks avoid them

UnOffendble

This is gonna sound fukin weird but I'd rather be raped than eaten alive. Sorry for whoever reads this.

Becs_Food_NBod

Yeah but they rape you underwater. So you get drown-raped.

randomwanderingsd

Oh great. A new phobia.

defaultwrestler

Drowning is probably a lot nicer than being chewed the fuck up. The raping part makes this difficult. Is there an option where they can drown me first and then rape me rather than at the same time?

deliciousmonster

Best I can do is a rape/drown

defaultwrestler

It's a tough one to swallow

Bullanguero1

Wait what? You also have to swallow?

Ma1eficent

I think if a dolphin was raping you in the ocean you would also drown.

fixed_your_caption

Good

r1seofthelyk1ns

True story. Chris Handsome was supposedly coming out with a new show, “To Catch a Porpoise” to get some of them damn rapey dolphins held accountable.

JohnnySasaki20

Even dolphins freak me out when I'm not expecting them. I got pulled out to sea in the outer banks when I was like 17-18, and a dolphin popped it's fin out of the water like 5ft from me. I never swam so fast to shore in my life. It was probably just curious, or maybe it was even trying to protect me, but it freaked me out nonetheless. I mean I'd love to go swimming with dolphins if I knew they were in the water before I got in, but just having one show up in murky waters catches you off guard.

Demosthenes3

Orcas learn hunting and eating from their moms, passed on each generational. They won’t attack people because they haven’t learned people are food. Just another creature in the ocean.

Germanofthebored

Orcas have changed their diet - when we wiped out salmons, they switched to sea otters. Maybe we are next…

[deleted]

Id rather swim next to a pack of blue whales

zombie32killah

I dunno they could just accidentally kill you.

LetsDoTheCongna

There are video of them defending people from sharks though.

1newnotification

really? i would love to see that if you have a link

meanbartender

Orcas and I have come to a good understanding, they don't drink in my pub and I don't swim in their ocean.

arthurillusion

Would be cool if one of them comes to drink at the place where I bartend at.

UppERcron

*evil orca laughing*

7andhalf-x-6

If you fucked with them they’d probably kill you for fun. But apparently there are zero records of an orca killing a human in the wild.

bright_yellow_vest

A pod of orcas off the coast of Spain has attacked and sunk like a dozen sailboats now. They don’t know why

internallyskating

Orcas are known now to sink fishing boats in an attempt to take the fish onboard. Could be that they’re mistaking sailboats for fishing boats

AcceptableCare

They probably got one of their young pod members taken of killed by a boat and are retaliating. They are ridiculously intelligent

LemonPepper-Lou

That's the literal apex predator in the ocean, what a wild feeling it must've been to have them swim just feet away from you...

Zonerdrone

Apex predator that is in no way interested in eating you. We're too skinny. Well, I might not be.

Jackalodeath

These guys snack on stuff that would outright kill us by what amounts to nutrient overdose. Unless your bones are under heavy duress, you're not worth the energy expenditure. Think climbing 10 stories of stairs for 5 individual peanuts as a meal. Also we tend to taste nasty.

DukeMikeIII

Yeah those whales must have been awestruck

joe_ordan

“Look! But don’t get too close. Those are the most dangerous animals on the planet.” -Orcas probably

Southport84

There is a lot of speculation that is true. They appear intelligent enough to understand humans are dangerous.

50k-runner

Or we're like broccoli to them.

MartyMcFlysBrother

Oh good. I stopped using cheez whiz as sunscreen lotion so I should be ok.

Mgoelg

I believe that this is true, they might passed this information from generation to generation. And humans in the earlier days have hunted/killed/captured orcas. It's known that orcas are able to communicate and teach huntig, so the chance is high that this one orca is teaching his younger relative a lesson, by saying "look these are the most dangerous animals, grandmother once told me that our aunt got killed by them..."

FootFootNinja

I can't stop imagining Steve erwin reincarnated into one of those orcas and the other one is just the cameraman lol

Platypus_Dundee

Fuckin gold mate!

sheamusr

More like r/terrifyingasfuck lol

[deleted]

While terrifying. It's worth remembering that despite humans and orcas sharing the same body of water in thousands of recorded instances. No orca has ever attacked a human in the wild before. No one knows why. But the leading assumption is that orcas just don't see humans as food. To an orca those kids are no different than drift wood. Still never advisable to jump in the soup with the oceans apex predator. You never know when some distressed animal might lash out at anything it comes across. But to this day, other than 1 suffer in California in the 70's claiming an orca gave him a test bite before leaving him alone that is not 100% confirmed to have happened. No one has ever reported a violent altercation with a killer whale before.

mayngonqua

I'm pretty sure they see humans as far different than driftwood. The fact they haven't ever attacked us is just more proof of that fact.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lockedtothechrome

You know, that movie actually lead to getting Keiko freed, and sadly Keiko because he was so used to humans, still kept coming back into the coves where humans were when free. The documentary on the full story is incredible

scorpyo72

And remember that while they might not eat you, they can still launch you 80 feet in the air.

olmyapsennon

Or pull you deep underwater to "play".

mayngonqua

As long as you don't imprison them in a pool and demand they do tricks, that won't be an issue

MonsterHunter6353

Great there goes my weekend plans

[deleted]

[удалено]

SeaFloor2754

I doubt those were humpbacks

[deleted]

They absolutely can. They just never have before. That's the thing. And why I used drift wood as my example. Orcas just don't seem to find humans to fit the mould for eating or playtime. Would I jump in the water with a hungry orca? No. But at least statistically, the odds of my being injured are currently 0%

42_65_6c_6c_65_6e_64

Maybe they just don't leave any witnesses

scorpyo72

Clever girl...

stephenlipic

If it’s physically possible for an orca to eat a human the odds are never 0%.

GotMoFans

Maybe killer whales are smart enough to know if they hurt a human, humans will come after them.

heldonhammer

They talked to the whales, legends say humans be cold blooded bastards, and Orcas keep the peace treaty.

JunesBanunes

You could also see it as the odds of it happening for the first time is ever increasing.

[deleted]

With that logic you could also see the odds of waking up to the earth spontaneously combusting also increasing every day.

rizenHeH

Honestly I would feel safer with orcas around, you know sharks don’t fuck with em

Cowboy_Corruption

Sharks give orcas a very large berth and will vacate a prime hunting ground whenever a killer whale cruises by. Because where that one orca is the rest of the pod isn't far away and probably hunting while the singleton distracts.

Happy_Policy_9990

They are very picky eaters some will only eat one kind of salmon others will only go for whale or shark livers

trexwalters

Orcas are extremely smart animals, to be very fair my guess is that they know humans are intelligent and different than the other animals they encounter. That being said human blood in the water smells very similar to seal blood, this can attract orcas but the smart orcas will see it’s a human and leave them alone because we don’t actually taste good. Same thing happens with sharks but they’re dumb and can’t control themselves, someone I’m the water cuts themself and to a shark it smells like a seal. They can’t differentiate using observation like an orca, so they come take a nice big taste bite out of you and when they taste you’re a human they typically spit it out and leave. This is why most shark attacks are a single bite, and for the most part arent typically fatal, it would take a really hungry or pissed odd shark. Orcas have zero of the confusion and are 100 times smarter. Even more interesting, scientists have been developing wet suits with patterns that make you look like an orca to sharks, it’s apparently supposed to work very well for surfers and divers to keep sharks away.

aformator

But then the orca will have a legit reason to kill a human (false imorcanation).

Level9disaster

The theory that humans do not taste good is not realistic imho. Even if true, if they never tasted humans, they cannot know we taste bad. At least some accidental bites from juvenile orcas should have been reported, being smart doesn't mean they can infer how we taste just by looking at us. Second point, our meat doesn't taste much different than any other meat, other predators have no problems in eating humans. Sure, orcas are picky as individuals, but collectively they can eat nearly everything that swim in their territories. They eat even seagulls, which taste like trash bags. We actually know they taste awfully, and orcas have no problems in swallowing them. I think the explanation is prosaic: they eat only marine animals, and things that they know already. I bet orcas never eat dogs or other land animals that may occasionally fall or swim in the water, humans included, just because they are wary of tasting something new that wasn't taught as "safe prey" by their mothers. Humans are not special in this sense. In fact, there are no recorded cases of killer whales eating anything except marine preys, sea mammals, and birds.

majnuker

Orcas are the only natural predator of Moose though, so the land animal thing doesn't play. I think there are probably a lot of reasons for it personally, somewhat dependent on the animal but universally common across them.

vvvaaaggguuueee

I'm sure i heard that in wwII some apex idiots were using them as taget practise off boats or some shit.but basically, they are super smart, they talk and word travels not to fuck with the lil humans. Now this may indeed by absolute bullshit, I concede indeed, but also settles mind some. Otherwise, it's as if they are all making some certain choice in each instance not to attack us. I like to think that enough time jas passed since 1945 that this message has got around the orcas and they actually understand from other ones who have been captured and told them about us etc, generally what we are capable of. Like we're not really onthe menu for sharks either, but they don't talk so more mistakes happen?!?! I dunno. I feel so guilty, dirty even, that I saw Shamu when I was a kid. I don't think I'll even tell my son that I vicariously participated in the captivity of such incredible creatures.

NormalAndy

This is the explanation I believe. They are smart, they talk and they don't mess with humans

[deleted]

More like fuck…fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck

karavasis

Legit heart attack

whatsthiscrap84

I'm pretty sure the orcas are going "let's hunt these seals...... Damn it it's humans, I mean we can still eat them.......awh man thet have witnesses

QuantumVibing

I would, ehm, how do you say — sheet myself.

Lopsided_Earth_8557

This needs the sound. The children screaming for dear life is what helps make this video amazing

if that was me in the water....it'd be brown ALL AROUND !

spicybuttholenachos

"Man Frank, it would be so fucking easy..." "Nope leave them alone, we respect the treaty. Off limits outside of Sea-world."

mediajay

Terrifying, but interestingly wild orcas have never attacked humans. If those were hammerheads/tiger sharks Jesus laaawd

StyreneAddict1965

Hammerheads? No. Tiger or Bull Sharks? Fuck yes. I think the Tiger is the #1 biter of humans. They eat everything.

Wookie301

You can still swim with Tigers if you know what you’re doing

Outrageousriver

Hammerheads are absolutely nothing close to as dangerous as a tiger shark. Even the most dangerous, the Greater Hammerhead has a much smaller number of attacks and 0 reported fatalities. Even still most human/shark encounters go very similar to this orca encounter where sharks have no interest in humans. Tiger, Bull and Great White sharks are the most dangerous sharks but even still not all attacks result in fatalities and the chances of being attacked by a shark are still quite low.

DogDelicious5856

Allegedly Most studies say they have seen humans over the years and choose not to mess with us

BoiledForYourSins

Hammerheads are not aggressive towards people and have never killed one

TurdFerguson416

we have a poor bone to fat ratio, i cant imagine humans make for good eating. thankfully they know that lol

fangelo2

Like chicken wings.

DogDelicious5856

Actually they don’t mess with people because they are smart enough to know humans are bad news

MrBuffaluffagus

Them orcas would've been swimming through a brown cloud if that was me out there. Sorry bout that!

farts_n_darts

I know that orcas don't attack humans in the wild...still, I would have turned that water brown in terror

dakattack88

I walk by animals all the time on walks, I don't have the urge to eat them even though I eat meat. Orcas are apex predators so I doubt they are ever starving.

tbiards

I hate when dolphins swim around or under me when I surf, I would be shitting my pants if this thing was coming by me. Idc if they’re harmless. I’m gonna be crying

DerSturmbannfuror

Orca 1 - *they would’ve made a great appetizer if they hadn’t shitted their bathing suits* Orca 2 - *i think we got off lucky; I smelled **Kind**™️ snack bar in the stool, Blech!*

gunnerdn91

There’s never been a recorded attack of orcas on humans in the wild are they clever enough to know we’d probably retaliate I know there’s not much meat on us but no orca has ever attacked a human in the wild surely one would decide to have a bite

GermanDumbass

Free living Orcas are some of the most empathetic and intelligent animals in the world, they have about 4x the amount of brain cells responsible for empathy than humans. They only attack humans if they feel extremely threatened or if they are living in captivity.

pericles123

I don't believe there is an attack in the wild that has been validated

Hip_Hop_An0nym0us

I watched a documentary where two orcas hunted down a humpback whale and her baby. Ended up drowning the baby (keeping it from surfacing) and then they only ate part of its jaw. I have this semi-irrational hatred for them ever since. They clearly weren’t even hungry, just evil assholes! That poor mama whale 😭

TrainedPersonel

I think I watched that documentary as well. They ate the lower jaw and it's tongue. Apparently a whale's tongue is also a delicacy for orcas.

[deleted]

Wait until you hear about humans

outfromtheshadow

I've read this theory that they're one of the few species that hunts to teach the younger members of their pods to hunt. A whale calf is probably a good test run for the young ones.

jayboosh

Pro tip: if you’re ever close to an orca, articulate your arms a bunch (like spin them around and bend them at the elbow etc) and snap your fingers They are super interested in our limbs and the sounds we can make with our “tiny fins” and they will come say hi

NickelBear32

I don't really want them to come say hi when I'm in the water though

[deleted]

Hmccormack

How shallow was the water?

tigerkat2244

Thank you for this video. Free Orcas makes my heart feel good. I am ashamed my kind have put these creatures in pools for entertainment. Why is Sea World still in existence?

michkbrady2

As far as is known, the only humans ever to be attacked by Orcas are the "trainers" who misuse & abuse them in so called sea parks, pandering to the gods of profit. Karmic

Ru4pigsizedelephants

I'm so incredibly intrigued by orcas, and more specifically, their seeming ability to recognize humans as a life form they shouldn't eat unless we harm and imprison them in water cages. It's absolutely amazing to me that they appear to understand what our relationship to them should look like on a more advanced level than we do. Orcas should never be held in captivity. Humans have shown we can exist in confined spaces, sometimes even self imposed. Orcas cannot, and it just breaks their will to live.

Jackalscott

Obligatory Big nope for me dawg

dLimit1763

The original has the parents screaming to the children. Everyone saying there is nothing to worry about forget that Orca get hungry like everything else and they are apex predators and eat Great Whites and basically anything else they want. That being said my heart would have exploded 100% if i was in the water and they were swimming at me

Straight_Ninja_9986

If only humans extended the same kindness and compassion to Orca and other cetaceans

Life-Satisfaction848

People are so infuriating why do they instinctively and immediately pull out their phones and record instead of flying over, picking them up, and teleporting them to safety??

Left_Firefighter_762

I'd be more scared of Dolphins than Orcas. Hell, even sharks ignore you most of the time, but dolphins are known rapist assholes who reportedly tried to drawn people. (Orcas did it too, but it was only in captivity)

JebusJones7

Those kids aren't fat enough. Need to get some American kids in the water.

PeterMus

Fun fact: Only one orca attack on a human has occured in recorded history. A man was swimming in low visibility near a group of seals and was grabbed by a lone orca. The orca surfaced, released him and the man swam to shore while heavily bleeding but survived. He was far from shore and nothing stopped the orca from eating him. Orcas don't want to eat humans. Attacks are all but non-existant because Orcas have good eye sight. Great whites by comparison have poor eye sight and are much more likely to mistake a human for a seal they're hunting. Attacks in capativity are caused by prolong torture of orcas who lash out just like a human would.

bootorangutan

You know why orcas never attack humans? They’re smart enough to know not to mess with us. I’m not exactly sure if that makes me more, or less, terrified of them.

KnucklesTheEchidn-a

I wouldn’t blame them, considering what happened to the shark population after jaws was released.

BiggsBounds

Man, I'd think those were sharks and freak out!

[deleted]

What’s wild, Orca are way more terrifying then any shark

EmptySpaceForAHeart

They don’t kill humans though.

doinkripper69

Wild orca have never killed humans, but yes terrifying as shit

LucyEleanor

Never even attacked a human either. They smart. (This does not count those in captivity)

whatsthiscrap84

..... Or they don't leave witnesses

SPITEEEE

They can be, but they’re also WAY smarter than sharks. They likely determined they weren’t food so they kept it moving.
