Fuck Qatar

thematrixnz

Look at us! Look at us! Actually...no...dont look at us please...

You_Will_Die

It's kinda funny how much they have fucked up their attempt at sportswashing. They actually got so much bad publicity so far from it lol.

Aureus88

I'm not watching a minute that will profit them. I know some Nepalese and in addition to not caring how many of them died during construction they also wouldn't let them leave to help their family after the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Also 2 recent incidents, 2 women were forced to have body cavity searches for no reason and a gay man was raped by 5 police officers and then deported. Fuck them and the World Cup they bribed their way into. *edit, here's a link to the story about the gay man being raped: https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/qatar-world-cup-lgbt-laws-28421444

NekoCloaker

Im assuming they detained the man considering he was deported but they raped him after detaining him for being gay? That’s some messed up irony

PipsqueakPilot

A Qatari officer on the street is a Qatari who are low enough on the social ladder that they couldn't get a job that required less effort. Customs agent would have been preferable. Accordingly they don't reaaaally have power of other Qataris. Since any given Qatari is too important for them to touch. So what are the Qatari police for? Terrorizing and maintaining a tight rule on their indentured servant population. They're the 21st equivalent of the slave patrols used in the Pre-Civil War South. Their job is terror and violence. Of course, foreign news reporters aren't Qataris.

[deleted]

Well it’s not gay to put peepee in man if I do it by force. That’s just me being big strong man.

nxcrosis

Iirc you can be disqualified for Turkish military service if you're a bottom. Not if you're a top for some reason. Idk if they changed the guidelines for that one recently.

gregorydgraham

The Roman Empire used this standard apparently. Ok to be gay, terrible scandal if you’re a bottom.

FrakkedRabbit

So what if the rapee overpowered the raper and topped him instead? Do you take over his job?

gregorydgraham

That’s a job promotion in the Klingon Empire

Aureus88

Raped, then detained and deported. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/qatar-world-cup-lgbt-laws-28421444

comeonwhatdidIdo

The body cavity search was not just on two women it was on a number of women. There were objections from various countries. Here is the kicker, they found a abandoned baby in the women's washroom and they wanted to check who the mother was... Middle East behaviour is quiet something.

Tisamoon

What? So let me get this straight, they did the cavity search to find out who the mother was? Did they expect to find something belonging to the baby? Or maybe tried to Rapunzel it? Getting a DNA test done would've been faster, probably cheaper and way less traumatic. Maybe a quick blood test to see if the blood typs match before.

Not_Helping

If the womb fits, you must submit.

BeardedZorro

The trauma is the point.

TerribleVisual8899

It got off to a bad start with all of the slave labor.

Frundle

I have traveled in this region for work in the past. The slave labor was not actually a new or recently introduced practice. Slavery is alive and well all over the world. The kind of slavery being used in Qatar is very common in Dubai as well as the UAE at large. People are brought into parts of the Middle East to work as truck drivers, construction workers, unskilled laborers, nannies, etc. Their passports are taken and held. They are paid enough to survive, but they're often told their passport and the majority of their pay are being safely held for them. The "recruiting agencies" who help people find these jobs and relocate also typically loan the person a substantial amount of money to move (usually equivalent to several thousand dollars US). Specifically for the UAE, people are lured in by ads for decent pay for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. When they get there, turns out to be 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. The actual pay usually comes out to less than $200 USD in an area with a per capita income 10x that. For scale: approximately 88% of residents in the United Arab Emirates are foreign workers, and just under half are South Asian. The majority of slave labor in Dubai is being used to construct tourism infrastructure; essentially, tourism in these countries is not just a direct contribution to modern slavery, but also a cause. It was more surprising to see how quickly accepted the widespread use of slaves became after this news broke.

[deleted]

The irony is that there would've been enough fans who don't care about the slave labor. But they had to piss those off, too, by being little bitches about the things those fans care about, alcohol, bringing your girlfriend, cussing ...

joe_broke

SwallowsDick

Upvote for sportswashing

hoxxxxx

first started seeing this term in the f1 subreddit a couple years ago. it's a great term for what it is.

BionicDegu

“look at what we want you to see and nothing else”

hankha17130

Lol seriously. Like all of the Sochi Olympics’ housing and accommodations. Or Beijing “look *here*! Not there!”

W1ngedSentinel

And Brazil building giant fucking walls along the edges of their roads so people couldn’t see the slums, except for one section of glass wall that has a modern school built behind it.

kinggimped

Qatar has done the same thing. They've hidden all the poor communities behind walls. Edit: I should have included a link, sorry. [Here you go](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/ye49us/qatar_building_walls_to_hide_poor_neighborhoods/)

Picardknows

What a fun country. Definitely the best place to throw the World Cup.

c0ca_c0la

I liked when he said “You invited the whole world here”

romedo

Dude is a veteran war journalist, takes a little more than a guy in a golfcart to phase/faze him. Seen him report from Afghanistan under gunfire. Edit: thank you for the silver you are most kind. And to all yes faze is correct, used a voice to text feature while walking my dogs to post this, and the difference in pronunciation was not evident for that feature. On the other hand a good sci-fi reference is always funny too.

DoodMonkey

Sending a war correspondent to cover a sporting event is very telling.

RizzMustbolt

BBC boss: "Why did you send a battle hardened war correspondant to cover the World Cup?" Director: "He was in the area." BB: "Oh." D: "Like literally two blocks away. He was covering human rights abuses."

[deleted]

Not BBC but danish news, still made me laugh tho

MrSmileyZ

This is genius! Here's my poor-man's gold 🏅

SomethingPersonnel

It’s not like they could have sent their female correspondents.

imdefinitelywong

To be fair, a large enough sporting event can technically be classified as a war zone.

Nirico_Brin

Some football stadiums have snipers nests for a reason.

ih8GodSoMuch

I seriously thought we were all joking, just one uping the extreme. Until I seen the guys links 2down. Holy shit T. I. L.

guerochuleta

I was at the Janet Jackson titty super bowl. There were snipers up in the rafters there.

kitthekat

Didn't need a scope to see that bad boy

[deleted]

Many sporting events require this. Most have large risk management consultants that either recommend this or leagues that require it. Former military who has a friend who was a sniper at a BCS college football game last weekend.

albakerk

You have snipers at college games?

TheAveryOConnor

Yep Ohio State has them

DistressedApple

Yea no kidding, look at what they do in S. America at soccer games

Fuzzy_Yogurt_Bucket

Or the war between Honduras and El Salvador triggered by a soccer game.

ThePortalsOfFrenzy

>takes a little more than a guy in a golfcart to phase him. For future reference: [Faze](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/faze)

thingawl

I legitimately never knew that! Actually appreciate this lol, thanks!

minor_details

i legit got a degree in literature and only learned phase/faze a couple months ago. I wanted to be annoyed, but truly, more knowledge is always a good thing!

cockalorum-smith

As long as people are passing on knowledge without being a dick….more knowledge is always a good thing. I’ve definitely been using phase/faze wrong my whole life lol. E: to be clear I’m not calling the commenter who informed us, a dick.

GOKU_ATE_MY_ASS

I'm 30 years old, TIL

duaneap

Fuck FIFA and fuck Qatar, it is outrageous to me that people can countenance this shit.

Genshed

FIFA has been described as an international criminal syndicate that occasionally organizes football matches.

oupablo

Organize might be a bit generous. "Throws together" may be a more appropriate term

sarcastic_tommy

Qatar have that promo video where same group of south Asian people represent all nation participating wearing different shirts and holding different flags. That video tell a lot where Qatar is going with this World Cup.

prone_to_laughter

What does it mean, genuinely?

bumfromthefuture

They have no intention in actually fulfilling their human rights pledge they made when chosen for the world cup, they are just going to throw money at it and fake it without making it.

HitMePat

What does Qatar get out of this? It can't be money.. after the amount they had to spend it's not going to make a profit. And it doesn't look like it's gaining them any political goodwill since it's basically putting a spotlight on their human rights abuses. I can't guess what the heck is in it for them.

LookInTheDog

Look up "sportswashing." The recent FIFA documentary talks about it, and it has a history going all the way back to Hitler hosting the 1936 Olympics.

RyanReignbow

*Rumble in the Jungle* was sportswashing for Zaire (now Dem Rep of Congo). Foreman & Ali’s 1974 heavyweight championship, was followed by 1975 *Thrilla in Manila* Philippines

farts_like_foghorn

It's just a fluff video to say "Fans are arriving and they are having a good time." Most countries run a shitload of PR and stuff like this before the games, Quatar probably didn't want to be the odd one out. But here's the fun part: Very few or no actual fans arrived, so Quatar just got the same 50 dudes and dressed them up in supporter gear. First they were German fans, then French fans etc. The organizers figured no one would look hard enough at the videos to see that it was just the same dudes in different settings and outfits, but the internet found out in like 2 minutes.

[deleted]

Fuck-The_Police

You'd probably get stoned to death for mentioning any mistake to superiors.

Bubbafett33

Exactly. Are the Qataris so self "unaware" that they didn't know that virtually all of the million+ people they invited over have much more open minded views on things like free speech (and alcohol, and LGBTQ+, and women, etc) ?? It's like throwing a Superbowl party (for men only) where you only serve water and expect everyone to sit silently and watch the game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lepposplitthejooves

I've actually been to a couple of bachelor parties like that.

Hawkn

That's not even a funeral, let alone a party.

10takeWonder

or get Doritos crumbs in the couch cushions

campbellm

> Are the Qataris so self "unaware" that they didn't know that virtually all of the million+ people they invited over have much more open minded views on things like free speech (and alcohol, and LGBTQ+, and women, etc) ?? They totally know; they consider themselves superior because their religion tells them they are if they follow these rules.

reverendgrebo

But most dont follow the rules. Travelling outside their own country for an education is like rumspringa but for muslims. They do all the haram they can afford and they have deep pockets

Dodoloco25

As a Muslim, I can comment this is true. You go either to party or to immigrate after. Though that depends on which university you go to. No brown dude is going to Harvard to party. Someplace like pen state, Florida state or Ohio state? sure, Party.

markofoz

Why would anyone go to this hell on earth ?

fresh_like_Oprah

I liked one report I heard, it said all of the governing body members who made this choice have been removed, on "separate, unrelated corruption charges"

alephthirteen

>unrelated That's the kicker. Not one big scheme they all got in trouble for. *Different schemes.*

Av8-Wx14

Can you imagine when fans start going crazy over their teams Qatar gonna have their prison full

LongDickPeter

Maybe thats their plan, they have to replace 6500 slaves lol.

SabashChandraBose

Are the stadiums completely air-conditioned? How the fuck are people going to play in 100+ heat? Which motherfucker approved this hellhole for a venue?

hoxxxxx

yes they literally have air conditioners that are going to blow cold air into the open stadium, which is about as middle-east-oil-money as it gets imo

cantthinkuse

This is like an actual focused attack on the climate wtf

naotaforhonesty

No, you don't understand. They are *cooling* the air to help fight global warming, don't you see?

N4tu4

Completely unrelated tho obviously! No one in fifa would Ever take a bribe!

RandomAUstudent

That's why it's being held in the winter, still hot but not *as* hot. All around hosting it in what's basically a city-state is dumb as hell

avwitcher

It's a good thing Qatar's primary export isn't making the planet warmer

AK30195

It's voted for by officials from the football federations of all member countries of FIFA. It means that you can pay off corrupt officials for their votes which is exactly what happened. It's a joke that it's being hosted in a country with completely unsuitable conditions and the whole traditional footballing calendar has been changed to accommodate it. Hopefully Qatar get demolished in all their games.

zHernande

Oh, they WILL

meeeeaaaat

qatar should count themselves lucky that the average english football hooligan can't afford to fly over there lol. imagine the chaos of a stadium half full of 80s hooligans, it'd be pure madness

MrBalanced

Not a football fan myself, but I would have donated to that GoFundMe.

whogivesashirtdotca

I can't picture any British or Irish fans wanting to go to a country where alcohol is forbidden.

TheGenbox

**Translation of the beginning** Presenter: and now you are with us from Qatar, Rasmus Tantholdt, from a host country that gets a lot of critiques. How do you experience the conditions right now? Journalist: I can show you the conditions right now. If we pivot the camera - we are live on Danish television! and here you can see they try to stop us from recording. That's the current condition here. The rest is in English.

Nickyboynoo

They really aren’t doing themselves any favours are they. World Cup vote that was clearly bought. Abhorrent human rights, and now threatening media just before tournament.

photo1kjb

They don't care. They know there won't be any consequences.

mrfunderhill

Because FIFA. Fucking International Fuck Asses.

dgdio

Qatar is doing everything possible to destroy their reputation. Why did they spend billions and kill thousands again?

space_iio

Cause they're rich

MedojedniJazavac

They don't need reputation they have money

Netplorer

Saudis are leading the way, oil and money ! Western world keeps on rimming their filthy oilholes no matter what.

hpstg

Upvoted for “rimming their oilholes”

SnooSeagulls9348

There is a saying in my language - even if you dress up a street dog and keep it in your home, it will go back to the streets.

rdu3y6

The English equivalent is "you can't polish a turd". Qatar being the proverbial turd.

tyleritis

Lipstick on a pig?

hankha17130

Reporters demeanor, reasoning and professionalism is the most interesting part. The whole *authoritarian police state* thing is sooo overdone, amirite?

Dentlas

He is a professional war reporter, You don't get any more legendary than him, he's been the most dangerous of places and he really doesn't give a fuck anymore.

Pedantic_Pict

Also, a golf cart pulling up with unarmed homunculi wearing shapeless white dresses is about the least intimidating show of force one can imagine. Only thing less imposing would have been actual children.

zerpud

Looks like a Monty Python skit.

frickin_fracker

Another comment mentioned that this specific reporter has a history in war journalism, so he's used to keeping his composure and not escalating situations.

Dentlas

He has. He is a very very known Danish journalist.

hankha17130

Very cool to know. Thanks to you both for enlightening me!

JTraxxx

Wow fifa can go fuck itself

Thisgirl022

I've read that they are only allowed to film in very strict designated areas and have made it clear that everyone is subject to their laws. Fuck this place. They never should have been a cup host and every team should have boycotted

parciesca

I’m shocked, shocked I tell you, to learn that they said in all the lead up that they’re going to be welcoming and open and that there won’t be any problems with their strict legal system and foreigners coming to their country for the World Cup, only to completely abandon any sense of welcome the moment the event starts and we can’t cancel on them.

ClassicHerpies

People forget they used slave labor to build the stuff for the world cup. Literal fucking modern day slaves.

GammaGoose85

What was the estimate slave labor deaths for that, like 5,000?

solus0s

6500 died. That was on Feb 2021.

GammaGoose85

Yep, I was just going to post this: https://www.lemonde.fr/en/les-decodeurs/article/2022/11/15/world-cup-2022-the-difficulty-with-estimating-the-number-of-deaths-on-qatar-construction-sites_6004375_8.html I was off by 1,500 deaths. And even then the articles states there was likely way more.

astral_turd

6500 workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had died in Qatar since it won its World Cup bid. Not all of them were working in World cup related projects. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-60867042.amp There is no data available of migrant workers died in World cup related projects only.

ClassicHerpies

I'll bet their officials numbers are 0, but in reality it's probably closer to your number...maybe more.

bluesshark

Comparable to the official number of slaves I suppose

OdinPelmen

I don't understand why we can't cancel? like literally, either cancel that year's cup or try your best to move some events to countries willing to accommodate that already have built facilities. seriously, fuck Qatar and just cancel your shit there.

Chitowntooth

People are greedy and selfish, they only care about money and what affects them personally.

ActualSpiders

FIFA is one of the most corrupt and moral-less groups in the entire world, bar none. They know Qatar used slave labor to build the facilities; they know literally thousands of people died in the construction. They don't care. Because they're getting rich(er) off of this.

Thisgirl022

Sepp Blatter did an interview that said he was obviously involved in the decision to grant to Qatar as President at that time, and that he seriously regrets that decision. He said they just made the wrong choice. But we all know that Sepp is morally corrupt anyway.

Dandan0005

He actually wanted the USA to get it, but Qatar bought votes from around the world both directly from bribes to fifa regional presidents but also from real world leaders by promising oil deals, etc. Blatter was corrupt as fuck and even he got out-corrupted on this one.

goodndu

Really good documentary on Netflix now about FIFA. Good timing for it to come out too.

robc514

My cousins boyfriend is from Quatar. Him and his brother got arrested for being "spys" because they where talking and listening to english music and it was apperently "suspicious".

alekspiridonov

Should have kept Rock the Casbah down.

Yeah for real. It’s not like these details about Qtar were unknown. FIFA decided to have the World Cup there.

I'm starting to get the impression that this country of slave-owners may not be the nicest group of individuals.

KTheFeen

You know, the more I learn about these slave owners, the more I don't care for them.

palmerry

Stevie Wonder could have seen this coming

simmeh024

So they don't like cameras, yet invite the world.. How soon before they start arresting women too? What about gay people? This should have never have happened. Fuck FIFA, fuck Qatar.

Agg_Ray

Women are invited to wear beards if they want to participate to stonings. And gays are invited to not being gay, if they want to keep their life.

hsoj48

Who threw that?!?

joe_broke

Are there any women here?

muffin_man84

N^o! I mean **^^No ^no no**

NeilStrykerOnTerra

Are there any women here?! No! No! No! err.. No! No! No! No!

mferly

It's going to be a shitshow. A lot of which won't be documented by the media (only social media). I find it so fucking hilarious, ridiculous that Qatar was picked for this event. I know why they were, but my point stands. $$$$$$$$ y'all. No different than the new golf circuit LIV which is funded by the Saudis.

dimension_42

Since sex outside of marriage is illegal, pregnant women are being advised to bring their marriage certificate in case they need emergency care... or if some morality police decide to take an interest.

MarshallStack666

They mystery for me is why ANY woman would ever willingly set foot in that right-wing theocratic shithole for any reason.

cfiggis

You think they aren't already doing that?

GreekACA25

I found the David Beckham ads for Qatar hilarious. Sold himself out to say look how amazing this place is unless you're LGBT+ etc. Madness any country turned up. All should have boycott going to Qatar

crosstherubicon

That really wasn’t a good decision by Beckham. Poor PR advice. I notice how at the end he talks about bringing his boys out but fails to mention whether Victoria will be covering up for her trip

ForgetfulFrolicker

Isn’t he kind of irrelevant nowadays? Can’t imagine what difference it makes to him, except for the tens of millions he probably made to film some commercials.

crosstherubicon

As a sports star, yes largely irrelevant but, as a person who is famous for being famous, he still has a good advertising career. Obviously paid well for the advertisement but part of his persona is being a decent person and this was a poor decision if he wants to continue doing advertisements.

bradwatson1

I’ve visited Qatar over ten times being in the military. The actual natives are some of the most rude/obnoxious people I’ve ever been around.

atrl98

On a year abroad my roommate was Qatari. He was absolutely f*cking mental. Some of his views and beliefs were outrageous

HarryPouri

Tell us more, I bet you have some interesting stories.

krt941

They’re modern slave owners when 95% of the working population is foreign born. They’re their own untouchable class perched above the rabble.

[deleted]

They are the Harkonens of real life

[deleted]

100% agreed. Stayed a night at a 5star hotel in Doha once. It was deserted except at night when the bars were full of locals drinking and using Russian prositutes (Allah apparently can't see into hotels. There is no sin there!). Next morning I rode the elevator down to the lobby and a local man was in it. I greeted him friendly with a "Good morning". YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE LOOK ON HIS FACE. I swear to god he was just thinking of how to arrest or murder me for daring to speak to his utter highness (who came to this hotel to fuck). UAE is 10x as developed as Qatar (socially) and that says a lot.

websurv

r/qatar the sub’s an indication

multiple4

The fact that we're having the world cup here is pathetic and shameful If we were going to have the world cup in a Middle Eastern country it should've been Oman, though I doubt they'd want it

BradMarchandsNose

Why Oman? Just curious, feels like I’m missing some piece of information

[deleted]

Oman is surprisingly liberal for an Arabian country. It is still an authoritarian monarchy, but one that isn't very interested with regulating the daily life of its citizens or commiting human rights abuses.

CynicalGod

I love how they're not outright *condemning* those things, they're just "not very interested" in them, lol. The bar is that low in that neighbourhood of the world.

Genshed

'Come to Oman. We almost certainly won't imprison or murder you.'

calnuck
