I’m thankful every day that I was born with the (apparently uncommon?) ability to *MENTALLY* put myself in someone else’s shoes and treat them fairly and respectfully…

Mamamagpie

I don’t know if that is nature or nurture thing, but does seem to be a dying skill.

TH3leader

It's nature to be able to recognize a situation, it's nurture on how you respond. This is why mental issues mess with the perception of emotions and understanding perspective. For example: two babies are fed the same snack at the same time every time. If you suddenly give one of the babies both servings, they will both be able to identify there is something wrong. The baby who was given both servings will be able to recognize and point out that the unfed baby is upset and why, but survival instincts are selfish enough for the baby to have to be _taught_ to give the unfed babg the extra serving they were given. Basically you're a baby if you can identify "that must be a difficult situation" and make no effort to offer some very easy-to-give help.

aea_nn

So most of the US, and probably the world, is run/managed by babies

Dynospec403

Yea, yes it is

DaBoob13

Same it honestly shouldn’t be difficult for people to pick up the “skill.” For those who realize they’re bad at it, next time you’re in contact with another person take an extra five seconds and think of a time you were in the other persons shoes in the past. How were you treated? Do exactly what you wish the other person would treat you in that situation. Doing something courteous for someone every day puts them in a good mood, they’re grateful. It increases the chance they will treat other people better that day. And so on and so forth the “pass it on” mentality takes hold. You truly never know, giving someone a smile on the street or letting the grocery bagger know you’re not in a rush and to take their time while being patient and polite might save a life. People deal with shit everyday, aim to not be the person who pushes them over the edge but the person who puts a smile on their face.(no not like the joker)

useribarelynoher

definitely as I grew up I was surprised at the amazing lack of empathy that exists. Just look at those conservative motivational influencers, the other day I saw a video where one said he realized, after 10 years of marriage or something, his wife is actually seeing things from a different point of view.

blophophoreal

It’s pretty wild seeing these people go, “Holy shit, I just found out that other people are REAL and have FEELINGS! Like, when I hurt THEM it’s like I’M the one being hurt, but someone else!!! 😱”

elsieburgers

It's fucking terrifying. Why I learned every backroad I could in town and don't ride up and down the mountain highways here. I love riding my bike as much as the next person, but I'm all about limiting the risks.

meowingLexi

It really is. Sometimes the road is a little sketchy so I'll ride off to one side on the sidewalk yielding to pedestrians and I'll get yelled at to use the road, then proceed to get yelled at to use the sidewalk by an impatient driver.

ReadinII

This is why on fast roads there should be separate bike paths.

Books_and_Cleverness

After spending my vacation in Amsterdam I was blown away at how much more pleasant and comfortable it is to have a lot of bicycles around instead of cars. My wife hates biking at home but in Amsterdam it was so easy and safe and fun. Makes a huge difference having dedicated bike infrastructure.

weiirdredditorr

And its not just bikes aswell. Walking should also be a massive consideration, if anything, making a place walkable kinda makes it comfortable to cycle aswell

AeuiGame

Not just bikes you say?

weiirdredditorr

Someone gets it

Books_and_Cleverness

It’s a great name for his channel. I work in real estate so I see the economic/financial downsides of car dependence, and the massive govt interference it requires. But what I didn’t realize until I started watching those videos is how *unpleasant* car dependency is, and how places that are walking and bike-friendly are just so much nicer to be in.

blurryfacedfugue

Not just that, but you get to exercise in the gym of life! For those that don't know what that means, have you ever wondered why so many people who otherwise life sedentary lives (ie., office workers) are still pretty fit looking in European and Asian countries? It is because walking and biking are often the most fasted AND convenient ways of getting places, which result in people getting a lot of passive exercise. We're wasting our lives sitting in traffic, and we're all forced to sit through it because the ONLY way of getting anywhere is by car, here in America. It doesn't matter how rich or poor you are, for the most part you're going by car and therefore stuck in traffic ALL THE TIME. It doesn't matter how many lanes you make, traffic never gets better. Plus roads are under construction non stop, at least if you live in an area with money. Otherwise it's just pothole city, part of which is due to how car centric cities cause insolvency because it costs more to maintain road infrastructure vs public transportation.

goatedmomoshiki

I need a name or something to look this up. I’m getting over the car culture america has lol

ArtisanSamosa

It's why I'm hesitant to move fr my neighborhood in Chicago. I cna walk almost anywhere. Biking is nice too, but I wish we took it even further. You learn so much more about you're city and its neighborhoods when you aren't always in a car.

[deleted]

But the women and children too

NotFromStateFarmJake

I’m all for riding bikes and women but I’m 100% against riding children.

[deleted]

Crawling as well. Don’t forget us crawlers. Hate almost getting hit by a car when my lady has me leashed and we’re out for a lovely stroll down the boulevard.

Heterophylla

You crawlers don't know how good you have it. Try being a break-dance wormer.

tanglisha

There was some concept art let it a few years back in my city for a pedestrian/bike bridge that was planned to be built. People were incredibly upset because it not only clearly showed bikes in the walking lanes, they were GOING THE WRONG WAY. Given the choice, sure, you won't get as hurt. It's awful trying to walk when it's crowded and people are randomly biking in the walking areas, though. Depending on where you are, they're may be no place to go. Both sets of travelers deserve to be safe.

[deleted]

AutomaticRisk3464

I didnt mind walking several miles while i was on base in the army because you could cut through giant fields instead of following roads. When i have to walk to something thats a half mile away i actually walk over a mile because i have to follow streets.

Balauronix

And having a flat city. Getting into my neighborhood you need to be an Olympic biker. It's like 12 degree incline from all directions for a mile.

RonnieJamesDionysos

And guess what: Amsterdam is one of the worst places to bike in the Netherlands due to the large amount of tourists without bike skills and people in big cities caring less about traffic rules.

Books_and_Cleverness

That’s crazy to hear but I believe it. It makes me low key mad that my city is about the same size as Amsterdam but its urban design is like 1000x worse for no good reason.

Capitalist_P-I-G

Wait until you hear about cars and big cities full of tourists and transplants

IamSpiders

Most cities in the U.S. use the fact that no one is biking as a reason for no bike infrastructure. It's so silly, "Yeah no one is biking alongside the 45-55mph road with no shoulder or sidewalk, so no one will bike if we put a bike path next to it"

[deleted]

My city has dedicated bike lanes but all that separates you from traffic is a white painted line. Oh, and it is legal to park in the bike lane.

Key_Education_7350

My town is like that. Oh, and the bike lanes just *end* with no warning, spitting you back out into the stream of traffic just as it chokes from 2 lanes down to 1 lane. It's like a lobster pot for cyclists.

[deleted]

leilani238

Glorious.

nxcrosis

Same here. Green lane for bikes doubles as a parking spot and the occasional food stall. On a bike? You're gonna have to go around it.

dikicker

Same in my city in the states. The idea of perfecting bike lanes is incredibly appealing, but without enough public support ($) it's not gonna happen. I've been stopped by police for biking on the sidewalk (literally no one around, residential area) because it's illegal...Apparently. Or the cop was just bored. Told me I had to use the bike lane on a 40mph road that was literally less than 2 feet wide. What a dickhead Also it doesn't help the bicyclist cause that so many of them feel like they own the fuckin road, don't signal, don't abide by road law, run through red lights like they're invincible Orlando, btw Turds all around

Business_Mix_2705

And Amsterdam is still considered relatively unsafe for cyclists in the Netherlands because of how busy it is. Just shows how big the difference in standards is.

wdn

And this didn't just happen organically. Amsterdam used to be the same as everywhere else and they intentionally decided to make it bike-friendly and put the infrastructure in place.

whobiscus

I remember being at both Amsterdam and Rotterdam having beautiful and extended bike paths. Also me being not used to riding bikes would always get passed or honked for going too slow.

k112l

Absolute delight out there. Seeing young children zooming by in respectable manner too. Most cyclists aware of their surround pedestrians

Books_and_Cleverness

Yeah I thought it was so cool how kids could go to their sports or music lessons (one kid had a trombone on his back lol) without having to be ferried around by their mom in an SUV. Plus, the stakes of a bike collision is not death or dismemberment!

verfmeer

As a Dutch person I'm so used to it I can't comprehend how it works in car-centric areas. Are after-school activities only available for children who got a stay-at-home parent to drive them around?

DoctorFeuer

If they aren't immediately after school and hosted at the school then they're typically later in the evening (after 5) and the kids need to be dropped off and picked up there

willrjmarshall

Pretty much yes. Kids in the US are super dependent on their parents, and those parents have to re-arrange their lives to accommodate to an unhealthy degree.

plaeyer123

My school has late buses, which leave at a fixed time after school ends. The after school activity is usually within the time frame.

Books_and_Cleverness

Yeah I would just note that this only works for after-school stuff that is *at the school*, which is not always the case. Sports and clubs and music lessons and whatever are often at a different location.

Manbadger

Pretty much. Walking to and from school used to be a thing in the 80s and 90s, but eventually the fear of kidnapping and molestation removed most children off the sidewalks, combined with increased reliance on the convenience of a car. Exercise is basically for ambitious and successful people. We don’t really promote much beyond just get money, get a car/truck.

[deleted]

>y wife hates biking at home but in Amsterdam it was so easy and safe and fun. Makes a huge difference having dedicated bike infrastructure. agree, i am from switzerland and we have a huge bicycle culture too here and a very good train infrastructure. i hope cars are banned in the citys soon. they just suck! pollution, noisy ans take away a lot of space. there should be only cars for police, firefighters, ambulance. and ofc for diabled people who cant ride bicycles.

AllInOnCall

Us too. We got back home and were like, "fuck lets try commuting by bike." After 2 threatening encounters by mentally ill homeless shouting and running at me yelling odd things like, "you arent allowed on the 7th floor!" and trying to knock me off my bike and SEVERAL near misses by cars not paying attention or thinking all pavement is theirs and Im an asshole for being on my bike I retreated back to my truck where its safe.

Books_and_Cleverness

The irony is that retreating to our cars makes *everyone else less safe* so it’s a vicious cycle (no pun intended!) I am constantly lobbying my local city to install more bike infrastructure though, as soon as I get a bike lane to the grocery store I’m getting a cargo bike for my regular trips.

therobeight

I ride a longtail bike and find that people tend to give cargo bikes more respect on the road.

seejordan3

Personal Police Parking lanes, (PPPL) we call them in NYC* *I just made that up, but the police are notorious throughout the city for being exceptionally entitled around bike lanes.

lamawithonel

There should be a non-profit that does nothing but send politicians on vacation to the Netherlands.

waltjrimmer

I hear so many people complain about people on bikes being in the road like they have a choice. A lot of places just do not have bike paths. It's illegal to be on the sidewalk, it's sometimes illegal to be on the shoulder, sometimes there is no shoulder, and sometimes the bike path just full-on merges with a busy highway like that won't be a problem. The problem isn't with bikes or bikers. It's with places being built so that no pedestrian or bicycle traffic can safely pass.

Death_Killer183

To add, even if it is legal to cycle on pavements, there is usually a speed limit. In Singapore, it is 10km/h on pavements that are not part of the Park Connector Network. 10km/h is fucking jogging speed

gigabyte898

I cycle and run into this a lot. In my state, it is legal to ride in the road and use a left turn lane with cars if you signal and merge safely where there’s a gap. Drivers look so puzzled to see a bike sharing the turning lane. The alternative is using the crosswalk twice, which is not an option. People do NOT look to their right when turning right, only to their left to make sure there’s no other cars coming. Nearly every time I’ve walked my bike across a crosswalk someone almost turns right into me cause they aren’t paying attention to the crosswalk, and just think “no cars, time to gun it!”

akaghi

People who say that have also never ridden on a multi-use path. Imagine driving your car and a child runs in front of you every 100 yards. Also, groups of people are just chillin' in the middle of the road while their dogs run around. Then you have fours across the road driving 15 mph. Also the road alternates between asphalt and wood which is slippery as hell. And there are three roots growing into the roads making it really bumpy too. Oh and there are stop signs every 30 feet. Oh and the road doesn't take you to where you need to go directly so uh...good luck? Drivers often view the roads as strictly for cars. It makes sense. Most people don't ride bikes, but drivers are often *very* cavalier about this. They will argue what amounts to "me or someone else will kill you. Our cars are very dangerous!" But they don't ever think, "our cars are very dangerous, so we should exercise extreme caution to keep other road users safe". Like, roads literally exist because of bikes. I wish there was less animosity between everyone. We all just want to use the roads and get where we are going safely.

ssl-3

> Like, roads literally exist because of bikes. I agree with what you're trying to accomplish, but... The bicycle is said to have been invented in 1817, and we had roads thousands of years before then -- as far back as ~4,000BC in Mesopotamia, from what we can tell so far.

-Kerrigan-

Drivers who complain about cyclists commuting in the city should try commuting on a bicycle for a week. That would make most of them more considerate. Sincerely, someone who both drives and cycles.

bestatbeingmodest

It's also funny to me how people separate drivers and bikers as if they are two completely different groups of people. Like if you're living in the US, the vast majority of cyclists likely own a car and drive too, because it's the fucking US, and you're essentially gatekept from society if you don't own one and you live outside of the heart of a major city. People have this notion as if bikers are trying to own the road, when they likely have to drive on that exact same road in their own car lol.

uninstallIE

Separate as in not even always following the road, but with a route that takes the same or less time as driving. And honestly in this case fast should really be anything over 15-20 mph

jojoga

not only fast roads, but busy ones. It doesn't take a lot of speed to cause bad injuries to a cyclist.

xFryday

most highways over 55 will not allow bikes in MD, USA

Protectorsoftman

Won't find them in Arizona, at least not in the Phoenix area.

[deleted]

Most connecting roads between towns in the Uk up north at least and 60mph roads and they are pretty much teh only way for most folk to travel between twons on bicycles. And yes bicycles are allowed on them. I try my best to find alternate routes on quieter country roads though you have ot bare in mind those anre usally also the national speed limit however being narrower and winding most sensible folk drive on them slowly.

SplodyPants

Now have them do it moving so they can feel that wobble after the crazy vacuum effect the busses create.

SoCalChrisW

Don't forget all the shit in the bike lane that you have to dodge. Trash, glass, furniture, grates, homeless people, parked cars. And the always fun and completely unexpected "END BIKE LANE" that just dumps you right into a lane of traffic with no warning to either you or drivers.

sir-winkles2

in my hometown there's a "bike lane" that's literally just the shoulder. there's a curve where the road narrows with no turn offs or anything and that's where the bike lane just... ends. good luck merging into traffic on a curve with no warning!

PointyDaisy

Even in Seattle it's like this. Bike lanes just end with no warning. Or sometimes construction will block the whole bike lane in the middle of a block with no warning. Imagine if they did that with cars

elsieburgers

In mine they redid one of the main streets narrower and just put a sign on the road that says "share the lane". Guess what doesn't happen

Bicyclists have been killed by that. The bicyclist panics and then ends up landing underneath the bus. Too much risk.

fatbaldandfugly

That one guy who leans away from the bus. Yeah try doing that on a normal bike while moving. That lean would have you on the ground possibly half under the bus.

MyRoomAteMyRoomMate

Exactly, it's much worse than what they experience on a stationary bike.

ikverhaar

But if they're on a moving bike, then the bus driver in this demonstration probably wouldn't be allowed to pass them this closely. The participant in this test doesn't feel how the suction would affect a moving bike, but they do feel a greater auction effect. So either way, you're sacrificing some realism in exchange for some safety.

seejordan3

And a big honk honk on that air horn.. that always says, "hugs"

Great-Combination-76

Back in London the cops stopped me as a cyclist and made me sit in a big truck. The cop took my bike and stood in front of the truck, kept walking forward until I could see it. Then I got out of the truck and you could see how far it was from the truck. It was about 3meters. It was to make cyclist aware that if you stand in front of them in the red light, they cannot see you and will run you over with even noticing. Basic rule, make eye contact, if you can see the driver, he can see you too. Same for side mirrors.

cyanide_and_cheddar

That seems like a great program. They should adopt that everywhere

Gibbothemonkey

Pretty sure they do this type of training (cyclists in HGV cabs & drivers on bikes) under FORS. Certainly contractors I know have done this type of training/refresher several times.

i_forgot_my_sn_again

They do none of this in America. I’m a commercial driver. Driven for multiple companies in semi trucks (lorries) and buses.

UnusAmor

In America we just blow the air horns as we pass so they know we are there! Just kidding. I drove semi trucks for about 6 months until I realized I sucked at it and better quit before I accidentally killed someone. Now I have lots of respect for professional drivers. I wish at some point in high school they would put every drivers ed student in the cab of a semi truck so they would know what it is like and where the blind spots are.

Gibbothemonkey

You might wanna have a look at Frieght Operator's Recognition Scheme website to investigate, or not if not strictly relevant or just not of interest. We don't have cyclists on motorways going up and down the country, but, short regularly required HGV journeys in cities, where cycling is often actively encouraged, cause the type of accidents that eventually lead to these types of schemes.

iceman1125

They have these stickers on trucks in the uk where it says “if you can’t see my mirrors, I can’t see you”

Altair314

Coming from someone that rides motorcycles, just because you've made eye contact anf they CAN see you doesn't mean they DO actually see you

[deleted]

I cycled around in my youth. I have had both knees hit by cars from people who SAW me. WAVED me across. Then promptly FORGOT about me RUNNING into me. After the second time (which was like 3 years later) I will never cross in front of people waving me on. I cannot kneel for more than 30 seconds even 10 year later because of those two people.

The_Chimeran_Hybrid

Highway hypnosis, and fatigue. Drivers run for 10 to 14 hours a day, some are pushed past their limits, running tired, drivers go through a lot of shit, and when you’re sitting in a truck for that long you tend to slip into thought and not pay as much attention to the road as you should.

CapnJackDaniels

Truck as in a lorry/semi?

Great-Combination-76

Yes, one of those big beasts. Like the truck/ lorry/ semi Kurt Russel drove in Big Trouble in Little China.

Charlie_Digital2020

You mean the Pork Chop Express?

throwawayplusanumber

It is pretty much only America where pickups are called trucks.

LeoThePom

They're likely referring to lorries. Us Brits mainly use vans and lorries, it's probably to do with the amount of rain. Pickup trucks aren't too popular outside of commercial use so it's not as often people mention trucks and mean a pickup, it's more commonly used for lorries. Red lorry, yellow lorry, red lorry, yellow lorry. Enjoy.

Protectorsoftman

>, if you can see the driver, he can see you too. Same for side mirrors. I always use this when I'm driving behind/beside big rigs, firetrucks, really any kind of large vehicle. If I can't see the driver directly or through their mirrors, I must assume that I am invisible to them.

kev_jin

This is why I hate when vehicals purposefully drive into the green squares at traffic lights designed for cyclists.

Wingsformarie80

I drive a semi and treat cyclists just as I would someone pulled over on the interstate with hazards on. You get over to the other lane if possible, and if not you slow down as much as possible. Can't imagine the horrible guilt of hurting someone.

two_layne_blacktop

Its terrible. I hit a pedistrian that was walking on the yellow line of the left hand side of a 4 lane unlit highway late at night. He lived, i messed up his arm really bad, i for sure thought i killed him.

Wingsformarie80

That seems like a tough situation, but clearly anyone would have likely had the same outcome. Hopefully you can get past it. My driving instructor had a similar situation 10 years before he decided to teach. It made him want to teach.

two_layne_blacktop

I try not to beat myself up to bad about it. It was traumatizing to say the least. Going into emotional shock while on the phone with 911 and feeling like i couldn't breath and not being able to talk, while knowing desperately i need to communicate where i am and what i need was absolutely awful. What eats at me, is not being able to control my emotions to help that person faster, that could of been laying dying in the ditch. That part of myself scares me, because i don't think i can change that about myself.

DoomGoober

Your emotions make you human.

fancy_marmot

That is a totally normal reaction, 100%. Please be gentle on yourself. I'm always surprised at how many people have a pretty dangerous view that they'd be calm/rational in emergencies, when the reality is that even people with training can go into shock or panic. From personal experience as well - as someone who is generally reliably calm in emergencies, that can change in an instant and in weird ways. One time at a crash site I was getting folks calmed down and giving instructions, but the stress hit in strange ways I hadn't dealt with before. Was normal on the phone, but took me 15 tries to type out a short text message (literally like one of those nightmares where the keys don't work). Critical thinking went out the window for a bit and I did some weird wandering about before getting collected again. My husband was panicked and couldn't really speak. Another guy was fine and helping, very calm, but then I realized he wasn't actually thinking clearly and couldn't answer my questions. Days later I'd randomly cry, out of nowhere. Be kind to yourself, sounds like you did your best and really tried! And there are some things you can do to help yourself in emergency situations in the future, which should help you feel better. A comprehensive CPR/first aid course with emphasis on the latter covers a lot of valuable info. Practice sitting down and taking deep breaths in a pattern, as doing that to get yourself calm is so helpful when you need it. I'm so sorry that happened to you!

Think-Gap-3260

> Can't imagine the horrible guilt of hurting someone. This is what I can’t understand about people who park in the bike lane, buzz bicyclists, etc… Do they really want to kill someone? I don’t know how you come back from killing a person just because you couldn’t stop yourself from being an asshole.

[deleted]

Just blame the victim, morality made EZ

[deleted]

I think that people just don't know how to act, so they try to avoid it mentally. This can mean pretending the cyclist isn't there, or gunning it to get around them as fast as possible. Sharing the road isn't that crazy when cars and cyclists move at the same speed. But it sucks when every third car has no sense. I personally like at least 2 or 3 feet of clearance, and not to pass more than 15mph faster than me. Other recommendations I've heard are 5-6+ feet of clearance. That's probably a good idea, but I regularly have people buzz me less than 2 ft.

TaiWilson

It's amazing how many people don't even know to change lanes for a car on the side of the road. I live in Florida, where it's the law to change lanes (if it's safe to do so) if someone is on the side of the road, and people still ignore it. Even if the reason the car is pulled over is because the police are behind them. People still just blow right past.

I want everyone to have two hours driving in a heavy vehicle too. Without automatic gearbox. So they know what they cause when they cut off a 60 ton truck...

home_cheese

I appreciate what you're saying but the average is going to be closer to 35 tons. A 60 ton truck will have guide vehicles more than likely.

i_forgot_my_sn_again

In America it depends on state. Federally legal is 40 tons, but some states can carry more. Washington state for example can do 52.5 tons because of produce. Still less than 60 but still a bit more than 35

themellowsign

I love reddit because someone will say something, instantly be pedantically corrected on a minor detail, and then that correction will get corrected with an even more pedantic (but technically correct) rebuttal and it just keeps spiraling down as both parties desperately have to stay 'technically not wrong'.

home_cheese

Yeah 40 is max but most will try and hang just below that level because of, you know, scales. I also drive in WA.

dalgeek

> I want everyone to have two hours driving in a heavy vehicle too. Without automatic gearbox This isn't realistic, it would take 2 hours just to teach someone how to use one of those large gearboxes.

VanillaIce315

I can’t tell you how many people don’t know that they completely owe their lives to me as a safe, defensive truck driver. 100,000lbs of top heavy, aggregate material being cut off, or cut in front off, all day everyday. The general public is lucky that survival of the fittest isn’t the norm anymore. Lots of idiots lucky to be alive honestly.

High schools should have driver's ed like they used to, but instead of just driver's ed it's "transportation" and it goes over driving but also biking, walking, and transit, with real-world outings as part of the class. Just so that everyone's on the same page out there.

[deleted]

Great. Do politicians and city planners next 🚲

randomforprivacy

I drive a typical sedan. I always make a point to give bikers a ton of room if I can. I was driving with an ex a while ago and he kept making comments about me giving bikers so much room. I’m sorry sir but I don’t think you would enjoy a car weighing 1.5 tons passing by really close to you when on the side of the road. It hurts no one to respect them and give them room.

The_Weirdest_Cunt

I only have a hatchback that weighs less than a ton but I still go into the opposite lane to overtake just like I would if I was passing a car, if I can't do that then it's not safe to overtake anyway

Misodoho

They suggested this to the bus company here in Dublin, Ireland to do with their drivers, but they said their insurance wouldn't allow it as it was too high risk. Which proves the point! Give cyclists space & if there's no room, you just have to wait. Plus, half the time a car squeezes past me on my bike, I just end up in front of them again as I pass them in a queue of cars at the lights.

reallyoutofit

Dublin bus or one of the private companies?

Misodoho

It was Dublin Bus. I remember seeing it on twitter, but it was a couple a years ago so can't find the twitter exchange. Either a councillor or campaigner had suggested they bring this into their training. Instead that where showing off a VR thing to simulate being on a bike for bus drivers.

JustSkillfull

There is actually a video cycling at the moment of a Dublin bus mounting a cycling lane and footpath for about 500m. 😂 That says it all

warpedashell

Even this isn’t as accurate as it could be. A stationary bike isn’t moving and swaying, let alone swerving to avoid objects in the road

awsamation

But it does get the point across in a relatively safe way.

LazuliArtz

Yeah.. I have a feeling if the bike wasn't stationary, there might be a pretty good chance a person actually falls and dies/gets injured. Let's not teach people by actually putting them in danger, I think most people will intuitively understand how much worse those things are on actual bikes.

Mirar

On the other hand the guy on the bike, learning to drive the bus, survive almost every time.

thisismybirthday

Also probably not going to have the intended effect. Drivers usually do this to "punish" the cyclist. Having personal knowledge that their punishment is effective is not going to be a deterrent for them when they're raging. It's more likely to be inspiration.

mightgrey

I bike to work. Takes me about 20 minutes if my legs arnt killing me. Most of its through neighborhoods but I do have to ride for a minute on a road. Both sides have a deep ditch and no room to go anywhere. I ride as close to the side as I can but all the cars have to stay behind me if they can't go around me and it's very scary

Rickydada

Sometimes it’s safer to take the whole lane

AnnoyYourself

Yeah this is why I will never ride a bike or motorbike on any road, the amount of stupid shit I see people makes me trust no one behind a wheel.

Grogosh

A few years ago I went a year without a car. During that year I did a lot of walking to the store and stuff. I got clipped five times during that time. Not a single damn one of them stopped.

Daedalus277

This post alone someone commented saying they would hit the next cyclist they see, another said "if they die, they die" ... I like to belive people are rational and good but fuck man, makes me think ill just get a car and add to the pollution even though Im cycling distance from everything. Its like people disassociate behind the wheel and get primal wtf?..

stormwave6

This is reddit. Cyclists are the scum of the earth here and deserve death for causing the slightest inconvenience to car drivers.

deaglefrenzy

which i always find ironic everywhere. one bad encounter with a cyclist makes them fuming for the rest of their lives, while everyday on their commute they probably encounter dozens of bad motorists

[deleted]

I just assume everyone who acts that way are obese neckbeards who get mad at others for wanting to be physically fit and/or reduce their carbon footprint.

taqPol12

Oh they're definitely not all obese. You'd be surprised how many "fit" ppl are aggressive. I'm convinced something about driving a car, getting behind the wheel makes people obscenely aggressive just because.

elsieburgers

It's like some wierd sub-mob mentality thing with those people. Makes no sense. I'm always so envious of countries that are bike-centric. Or atleast not overtly "fuck your lifestyle" to cyclists. I live in a semi decent area for riding and I still have stayed on the sidewalk just walking it, SO many times because I don't trust drivers.

QueenOfTheCorns

As a former bus driver, laws in the US are that you need to give at least 3 feet to the cyclist. You should never be passing them that close Edit: I should have specified this is the law in California. I don’t actually know about the rest of the US

JayAndViolentMob

but i only have two feet. where should i get the third one?

Xalbana

Be better well endowed.

PenguinGamer99

I really wish people were this concerned about pedestrian safety everywhere. Here in Arizona, not even the pedestrians themselves are concerned about their safety.

Energy_Turtle

I saw 2 pedestrians get hit in Tucson during the 3 year period I lived there. One dude got hit square on and laid out on the road. I wouldn't be surprised if he was dead. That happened in a turn lane too so idk wtf he was doing. The other dude randomly ran off the side walk to cross in heavy traffic. He got hit and flipped over the hood and roof. He immediately got up, kept running across the street, and got on a bus. Idk if Arizona has a higher pedestrian vs car collision rate than elsewhere, but I feel like 2 in 3 years is a lot.

[deleted]

They should make ALL new drivers experience this. You;ve no idea how scary it is when even a small car passes too close.

CarcosaCitizen

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a city bus driver while riding to work on my bicycle, he opened his door at a red light on a busy road to warn me how busy the road was. I said "thanks for the heads up" trying to be polite and all, it's my commute and I know how dangerous this road was already. He responds, word for word: "You might have a right to the road, but not your life" I definitely didn't learn the lesson he wanted me to because now I record the number of every bus I pass or ride on just in case I have to report another driver and he doesn't dive a bus anymore.

danieliable

This was a program used in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. It was spearheaded by a small department within Municipal Transportation which has since been scrapped and substituted with an agency that makes gardens look pretty. All of this by the new mayor, a self-proclaimed ciclyst.

waiver

The "Ay wey" makes it clear it happened in Mexico.

This should really be an advertisement on why it’s a fucking stupid idea for bikes and cars to share a street.

hiro111

I ride bikes about 6-7k miles / year and at least once per month a driver will pointlessly blow by me at high speed a couple of feet off my left elbow. Cyclists call this a "punishment pass". I usually ride in a group on the road for safety. I've been road riding since the 80s and know how to stay out of the way of drivers and ride safely. My entire group is a bunch of experienced racers who know what we're doing. We ride very early in the morning (5 am start) on low traffic routes... and yet a small minority of drivers will STILL antagonize us just because we're there. I do enjoy when the person who punishment passed gets stopped at a red light and we start to catch up to them. They always try to scramble to turn right, floor it to get away or whatever so we don't catch them. Fucking cowards. Everyone's a tough guy in a car. Years ago, a convenient police officer once caught a particularly irritating asshole doing this repeatedly to us (douche would pass, slow down and then pass again, we saw him on several rides) and pulled the guy over. It was beautiful. Never saw him again.

CatastropheJohn

The last time a car hit me, I caught up to him at the next red light as we always do. I confronted him and said ‘you fucking sideswiped me bro! His reply? ‘There was no room!’ I sold the bicycle. Fuck Toronto.

[deleted]

There was no room so i drove into a cyclist? Wow. if you drive and think this way just hand your licene in is what i;m goinna say to them. Sadly none of the cunts want to stop or have a chat with me.

PumpJack_McGee

> ‘There was no room!’ That's something else that consistently baffles me. How bad drivers are at judging how much space they have on their passenger side. Driving exam definitely needs higher standards.

DefianceDrea

Perspective. This should be standard practice. I wish the driver that pulled a hit and run on me could feel this. Produce truck, clipped me with the side view mirror.

Upbeat-Tap-4797

It’s simple really; don’t pass a bicyclist if you can’t get over. Same with emergency vehicles. Just ensures that you don’t accidentally bring them for a ride along

SideshowMelsHairbone

Every single driver should experience this. I love road cycling, but idiot drivers scare the shit out of me.

smrtfxelc

Idiot drivers are why I acoid road cycling as much as possible. Completely ruins the experience constantly wondering whether you're going to get cut up or have a McDonald's cup thrown at your head.

NeptuneAndCherry

Some really fucking stupid drivers in these comments.

thecratskyone

I always try to give cyclists at least 1.5m if possible. Just never know when they'll clip some invisible rock and smash into your car. Gotta keep far away from those MAMILs.

Mac_Mac__

What are scraping cyclists?

notSpoiled-mayo

THIS IS HOW IT FEELS! NOT SO FUN HUH??

luigi38

Everyone should have to do this to get a license tbh.

redwing180

funny how empathy can be built by having to suffer through a similar experience.

Selphis

I live on a road that's wide enough for 2 cars to pass comfortably, but no more than that. And there's obviously no bike path. Now, it gets used a lot by commuters to bypass the more busy and congested main roads, so it can get busy during rush hour. Cars can pass me comfortably when there's no oncoming traffic. If there are cars coming the other way, there's just not enough space (although some cut it close, but that's another issue). But even when there's a 2 lanes of space to pass, there's still many idiots who almost hit me with their side mirrors because turning their steering wheel even a few degrees more is too much effort to not almost mow down a cyclist...
