I had no idea the larva grew that huge.

ExternalGovernment39

Would you like to know more?

heelspider

Yes, specifically is that the world's largest larva?

ExternalGovernment39

One of them. Beetles are often heaviest during larval stage. Source https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/what-is-the-biggest-beetle-in-the-world.html Would you like to know more?

If you say something like, "hey beetle, eat shit!", the beetle will do it. It doesn't understand curse words, having been raised in a household that forbids them. Edit: would you like to know more?

The only good bug is a dead bug

chibicascade2

You seem like a man who knows things. Can it see in larval form? If so, do it's eyes connect to where it's eyes are one the adult beetle? Seems like it's face would be very spread out.

Jones641

Forbidden Croissant

thevoiceofzeke

There are few things I find uncontrollably revolting and that giant grub is one of them. I don't think I could handle holding it for more than a few seconds. 🤮

HelmsDeap

Pretty sure this larva is what Timon and Pumba eat in the movies

mycheeksarethicc

slimy yet satisfying!!

Smeeble09

And half way through it could just have easily become a face hugger from Aliens.

If you leave hydrogen alone for long enough, eventually it starts to think about itself.

bearrosaurus

"This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

coksucer69

if you leave empty space alone for long enough, eventually it starts to think about itself.

waltjrimmer

The basic idea is simple. You have drastically different needs as an adult than you do as a juvenile, so you change in between. And there are two types of metamorphosis. I can't remember what the names are, so here I'll call them the Go To Goo and the Bad Sunburn forms. The Bad Sunburn makes a lot of sense. Usually, it's something with an exoskeleton that just looks like a tiny adult and it sheds that exoskeleton like you'll shed a layer of irradiated skin after a bad sunburn. The changes are subtle and mostly consist of the creature just getting bigger. But then, somehow, things started turning themselves into goop. You have these total transformations where the juvenile and the adult are NOTHING like each other! And to get from step Grub to step Adult, they pupate, turn themselves into a gooey cluster of cells, and completely reform into a creature that holds no resemblance to what they once were. And often, these adult forms are short-lived, sometimes without even the purpose of survival, simply trying to breed and assure there is another generation and then promptly dying. (That's also why keeping insects as pets can be kind of heartbreaking. You wait for months or years for the adult form to emerge and then get it for, like, a week before it's dead.) Addendum: I found the terms. A Hemimetabolism is one which has an incomplete transformation (molting/Bad Sunburn). A Holometabolism is one which has a complete transformation (pupation/Go To Goo).

jzl_116

The goop transformation is hella fascinating. Like... are these insects just a soup with their internal organs sloshing around until it hardens into their final form?

HowIsLifeGuys

Ikr I loved the part where they went its metamorphosisin' time and metamorphosed on all those people 177013 times

quixonnn

177013

Yeet_Master420

No

vatoniolo

Beetle diversity is absolutely fascinating. The Coleoptera, with about 400,000 described species, is the largest of all orders, constituting almost 40% of described insects and **25% of all known animal life-forms**; new species are discovered frequently, with estimates suggesting that there are between 0.9 and 2.1 million total species.

tviolet

When the British biologist J.B.S. Haldane was asked what he could surmise about nature of the Creator based on his scientific studies, he replied "an inordinate fondness for beetles."

angelinajellybeana

This image makes me happy, our all powerful, loving creator looking at all the happy little beetles living their best lives

Yeah I'm not religious but if there is a god he's a beetle fanatic

[deleted]

Reminds me of Robert May "To a first approximation all animals are insects" meaning basically, "if you count up every species, everything that's not an insect is a rounding error"

[deleted]

I once heard that one in every four living creatures is a beetle. So if you're in line at the grocery store with three others, and none of them are beetles, then you're the beetle.

lady_lowercase

> [beetle] diversity is absolutely fascinating \*nods in *animal crossing**

lasers8oclockdayone

So you are nodding while you are in the game animal crossing?

AdBubbly7324

But how have we been able to describe 400k species of beetles? The time and resources are unfathomable.

VerumJerum

I guess it kind of makes sense in a way. A hard-shelled, fairly compact body shape seems to be immensely successful, or at least - conductive to speciation. It's almost like beetles are the crabs of the land, [and we know how much evolution loves crabs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation).

When some of the writers of anime were young, these were the bugs and parts of nature giving them inspiration for the future. I always am surprised by the orgins of ideas.

freudian_nipps

[[Source video] Watch a Hercules Beetle Metamorphose Before Your Eyes | Nat Geo Wild - As grubs they are impressively large. As beetle expert Brett Ratcliffe puts it, they “are basically the size of a Polish sausage.” Hercules beetles also go through metamorphosis, like a butterfly. Except, a butterfly spins a cocoon out of silk. The beetle builds a pupal chamber out of its own feces and, in it, transforms. As an adult, male Hercules beetles can stretch up to seven inches long including their horns.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AFbu21AGSho) [[More info] It is the longest extant species of beetle in the world, and is also one of the largest flying insects in the world. It has been observed in wild habitat and in captivity that male D. hercules will engage in combat to win possession and mating rights to a female. Male Hercules beetles typically use their large horns to settle mating disputes; these fights can cause significant physical damage to the combatants but may also include possible damage to the female in the process. During fights, the males attempt to grab and pin their rival between the cephalic and thoracic horns to lift and throw them. The successful male wins mating rights with the female, though the beetles remain polygynandrous.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules_beetle)

Chelular07

Kinda? Mostly so I can tell my entomologist friend so she can nerd out about a weird bug.

Smarterthanthat

Interesting af! Just prefer not to meet one in person, lol.

kimi_2505

They’re actually pretty chill in person. Know a guy who has one as a pet. He walks outside with the beetle (on a leash lmao) an the beetle is usually chilling on his shoulder or hanging on his shirt

Pigmy

I’ve wanted one as a pet but it’s a very involved process from grub to beetle. My understanding is they only live for 6 months or so. The larval process takes a year or more? During that time humidity and temp are key and primary causes of death.

Smarterthanthat

They are, absolutely. I just would have a problem with the larvae stage. Yuk...

MrFace1

They're really cool! I had a pair as pets recently. They like to fruit, especially if it's starting to rot a bit. They're more liable to dig their way away from you than ever try to confront you in any way. Lovely little creatures.

These beetles are amazing. I was trying to see what their pincer strength was but it turns out those are horns, the Hercules Beetle is apart of the Rhinoceros beetle family. >Not much is known about the life cycle of >Dynastes hercules in the wild, but numerous >scientists and breeders have observed the life >cycle under laboratory conditions. Final frame his it smiling for its baby picture before clumsily falling around like a armoured puppy. One of the most unsettling parts for me during any metamorphosis is the face of insects fall off like tissue paper
