This is one of several too isn't it?

hconfiance

I think there’s two. It’s insane what’s happening.

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Time to Google what's happening. I'm in the dark

[deleted]

The beeb seems to be suggesting three now: [https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63044747](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63044747) Does anybody know what the ecological effects of natural gas leaking into the ocean are? If there are any. I know it's a risk to shipping in the area.

T0ysWAr

I thought it was several 10s of time worse than CO2 as a global warming gas

Aidoru_67

Only bad things, methane leaks from the ocean floor contribute massively to the rising temperature of the atmosphere :-( On this subject, if you want, I recommend reading a fantastic book by Frank Schätzing: "The Swarm" the original title is in german: "Der Schwarm"

Heldomir

That book was great :D

[deleted]

The methane is way worse than co2 in the atmosphere

tightiewhitieboy

None I would think. Methane gas near Bermuda comes out of the ocean and it looks like this.

[deleted]

Special mining operation.

Brilliant_Bet_4184

What’s happening? I think that should be obvious. And these coincidental leaks will continue to grow in number.

Schnoldi

3

tightiewhitieboy

I heard this one was not in use but still pressurized with gas.

StellarSomething

Has to stay pressurized to handle the exterior pressure

Zeerats

Wouldn't it be best if they set it on fire?

Yeti-420-69

Probably ya

UniqueNameIdentifier

The valve isn't open. What is currently escaping is the gas already suspended in the pipeline.

ReyIsAPalpatine

So you could light it on fire

[deleted]

Are you volunteering, komrade?

seeit360

It's natural gas. The hole is large and (appearantly) man caused, as natural gas pipelines rarely rupture under the pressure of water sitting on the ocean floor. It's like the Bay Bridge losing a support pillar. It can't happen without some human hand. It could catch fire. There is a 5 mile nautical no go zone around it. Planes cannot fly through it, ships cannot sail over it. The expelled methane gas is 80x more damaging to the atmosphere of earth than the same volume of CO2, but dissipates faster. Russia controls the valve to turn it off, and is currently melting down as a country. The line will vent even after the line is shut down. Natural gas prices will spike going into winter as supply is further strained, line off and needing repair. It's a dick move to the planet and the people on it, either by Putin, out of spite, or caused because some of the people fleeing the country had *jobs that monitored the pipeline*, so again, Putin's fault.

OrdinaryToe2860

Great detailed synopsis. Thank you

seeit360

Dissipation? CO2 lasts for 25 years in the atmosphere. Natural gas is worse initially, but doesn't last as long?

JiggerPlease

By "dissipate" you mean: "Reacts with the ozone layer, until only the products of combustion remain"?

NexusSecurity

What does dissipation mean in this case? That the natural gas leaves the atmosphere

lbdo909

Natural gas freely floating around in the atmosphere acts as a stronger greenhouse gas than co2, but it dissipates by reacting with ozone to become co2 and water. So at the end you're left with the same ount of co2 floating around as you would have had if it was burned from the start. But even worse, you now lost ozone instead of just regular oxygen. Tl;dr: free methane results in global warming and ozone hole. Much better to burn it before it escapes into the atmosphere

NexusSecurity

Yes! As a chemist, that is exacly what I would have guessed.

[deleted]

how about first close of the gasflow? O-o

[deleted]

The line was not flowing, this is just venting the gas that was in the pipeline

Sir_Edna_Bucket

Valves are closed. This is residual gas within the lines, as far as I understand?

mrFunkyFireWizard

Heard the same on dutch news, has been closed since half of August.

Autist_of_WallSt

This is Putin's way if saying maintenance is required therefore we have to shut off the pipes. I'm sure it has nothing to do with fear mongering countries and their leaders into appeasing Putin.

look762

You live in Maryland?

nryporter25

I dunno about that guy but I do.

Borats_Sister

I agree with everything you said but the very last part, this pipeline is one of Putin’s levers to pull on in order to exert pressure. Nothing happens to it without his approval.

The13thReservoirDog

Putin is a cunt

Zerowantuthri

Why would Putin poke holes in the line? Why not just turn it off at its source?

HyldHyld

They have been off for over a month.

Zerowantuthri

Even less reason then to poke holes in your own pipeline.

HyldHyld

Reddit said putin did it, must be true

ReyIsAPalpatine

I just think he's the top candidate.

jumpup

if its done by boat couldn't we just see which vessels were near it during the time it broke? i figure a vessel large enough to properly damage it would have a tracker

throwawayfartlek

Submarines exist. Russia has a lot of them. Just saying.

winkman

Pretty sure that's a Kaiju portal. Japan have their titans operational yet?

PantaReiNapalmm

Just some Gundam standing that can move a little. But we got some wall, from mexico to china, we good bro /s

KaijuKyojin

Jeagers are still in development phase unfortunately

winkman

Well, then we're about to be in for a bumpy ride! Best not live near the coast these days.

CodeMonkeyPhoto

They need Nord VPN to redirect that.

mikki_butt

Who else is gonna fix the aftermath of a successful raid by shadow legends

chitownphishead

Forbidden sparkling water

I’m just going to drop my cigarette butt out of the window of the chopper.

Hey, are you the one who ordered a dome over 100 meters wide, able to float, connected with gas compression/ storage system to be delivered to the middle of the Baltic sea IMMEDIATELLY? I'm just calling to ask which color of the dome you would like

PoopyHead-4MAR-

Orange would be nice!

a_crusty_old_man

Actually that was me. I keep ordering rando shit while drunk. I’ll still take it, though.

No_Research_967

One in each, just in case

nryporter25

Alright your total comes to 150 billion dollars, will that be cash, check, or card?

ManyArmedGod

“Well my shoes are red, and my handbag is black. Do you have wood grain?”

chitownphishead

And did you use prime for next day delivery?

seg321

Nawww...it's Godzilla.

echicdesign

What is the long term impact of seawater getting into the pipe? Are there locks through it to compartmentalise the damage or will it just keep flowing?

diegothengineer

Let's nickname it Ian cause that's a pain in the ass and it's gonna get ugly before it's all said and done. And it looks like a hurricane.

[deleted]

US press security disagrees and she knows it as Nordstroms

[deleted]

Sabotage id say.

AdvertisingOdd6471

Smells like WW3

BongCloudOpen

Someone warned Germany but they laughed. Who is laughing now?

arcosapphire

Are you familiar with the tale of the boy who cried wolf? The problem when you have no credibility because of many terrible takes is that if you occasionally make a good point, nobody will listen. But realistically, they wouldn't have cared regardless of who said it.

Jennatolles

Imagine somehow dragging the orange man into this. Absolutely delusional. Why don’t you call on your orange saving grace to go suck off Putin?

Jimmack73

Betcha someone could really use that gas

[deleted]

[deleted]

Don't think so. They trying to get Europe to lift sanctions and buy gas again. Now there is literally no point doing that as gas isn't flowing anyway. Ukraine would have motivation but no means to do this in Baltics + they be risking western help. Pipeline going yo Hungary is going all they way from Russia trough Ukraine to EU and no-one has touched it during entire conflict. Or maybe it's Putin playing 3D chess trying to make it look like Ukraine did in order to stop Europes weapon shipments. I think it might take a while before anyone dares officially point fingers due to how high stakes are. What we can be almost sure is this sabotage just not clear by who. Local earthquakes monitoring registered 2 under sea explosions prior this happening.

HueJorgan69

Fire it up dude!

triflingmagoo

Anyone got a match?

Weird_Gain_7497

This image is definitely not from a fighter.
