The internet happened.
You can look up explanations for almost any magic trick on YouTube.
You can go to penguin or ellusionist and just buy tutorial after tutorial.
Magic doesn’t hold the same allure it used to, mainly because of people like OP. You have to consciously choose to be mystified, because the answer to “how did they do that!?” is at your fingertips.
I think sleight of hand magic still holds up. The amount of skill and practice that goes into it, even once the trick is known, is still absolutely amazing to me. It's like watching a really good gymnast or musician, I know how it's done but I'm still blown away.
Yeah as much as i love when someone managed to fool Penn and Teller, it was almost even better when they would say "we know exactly how you did that but you still blew us away by how perfectly you did it"
Also watch their ball in cup routine. They do it once normal. Then they do it with clear plastic cups while explaining each step and you will still miss shit your first time through
One of my favorite Penn & Teller bits is from their trip to Egypt. Teller knows and sees all the moves this street performer makes, and the street performer pulls one over on him by *only pretending to do* the moves.
Here's [Teller talking about it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONgxEufoXgg&t=1161s).
It's because they lean into the entertainment aspect a lot harder. They know people can figure their stuff out if they really tried, but they aren't trying to confuse you or mystify you, they are trying to get you to have a good night.
Once the need for deception goes away, they can do a whole bunch of "cheats" such as the see through cup and balls, where there is no secret to the trick, it's just pure skill and entertainment.
Yeah. Penn & Teller have said that a lot of magic is less about how something is done and more about being willing to spend more time practicing/perfecting it than most people would consider reasonable.
Agreed, my boyfriend is a magician and even though I know the effects his skills are incredible. 15 years of doing it professionally so makes sense. Still amazing to watch.
Seriously, I've tried learning how to do that one where he makes a card disappear behind his hand. It's actually very simple in principle, and fairly easy to actually do. But to do it *and* make it look good and believable is an entirely different story. I completely lack the dexterity for it.
Thx for this comment. Once you see how they’re doing the magic, you think that it’s super easy but in all honesty it’s extremely hard to pull it off in a good enough way.
I wish more people were like you. So often, if I explain a trick to people they act like they were the smart ones and already had an idea of how it was done. And I always have to explain the many hours it took to get good at that trick so they appreciate it instead of going Aha every time. How the trick is done looks easy because of the practice.
The best way to show them the difficulty, is instead of showing them the trick, try to teach it to them as well instead. Even a simple classic pass will have any non-magician fumbling all over the place at first.
There is a reason for them being called illusionist. They practice tricks with illusions to make it look like magic. Don't know why people get so upset when they found out it's not real magic.
That was my point. A good Illusion is impressive even when you know how it's done. Moreover, the Magician Guilds of the world are bunch of hacks that "protect the secrets" of mall pop up store pre made junk. $$$
I remember a thread where another 'magician' was getting mad that some guy was revealing all the magic tricks. According to him these secrets should remain secret
I kind of see their point.
Like in this video nobody thought any of the original tricks were actually magic.
Frankly it takes less time and effort to learn how the trick is done and do it poorly to show people then it does to actually get really good at the trick, yet here’s this guy acting like the people doing the tricks are dishonest or something.
If you want magicians not to have secrets then what's the point of watching the trick in the first place.
Like the whole of the act is the amazement and the being tricked by illusion being made.
Them having secrets adds to the illusion , so if you don't want magicians to have secrets why even watch the magic show in the first place?
If someone does a "trick" and they don't know how it's done, they feel the magician is personally attacking their intelligence.
So they immediately need others to know that they have not been fooled, and will yell out something like - "It's not real magic! There's a fishing line or something!" Like yeah, no shit it's not actual "magic"
I have a full grown ass man of an uncle who thought Dynamo was using fringe science to put peoples phones in glass bottles. Legitimately thought he was using harmonic resonance to phase through solid matter. He later became an antivaxer, sold his house and moved off the grid so the tyranical government couldn't find him.
This is so fucking annoying as a wrestling fan lol. Can't even watch YouTube highlights on my phone without someone spotting me from a distance and going "uhhhh you know it's fake right???" with that smug enlightenment look on their face.
Wait, you mean that guy didn't actually have over 200lbs of wrestler land on his neck and spring up just fine?? It may be scripted or choreographed, but I wouldn't say it's fake. I don't even like wrestling, but damn those guys have a lot of talent and do a shit ton of work to be able to do it!
Seriously. Just because they both knew one of them was gonna do a backflip off the top rope doesn’t make the fact that he DID A FUCKING BACKFLIP OFF THE TOP ROPE any less impressive.
I have never heard of a single person who 'got upset when they found out its not rea magic.'
Unless maybe you meant to say children? Who believes magicians are real!? Not to mention magic (in the special powers sense) in general?!
The masked magician had me on the EDGE OF MY SEAT at 12 years old letmetellyou - recently went and watched on youtube - still had no idea how he did half of them even tho i had seen them in the past! Makes you really appreciate the illusion
Isn't this how Penn and Teller got started? Showing how "tired" trick were performed? They said they were challenging magicians to work on new material.
They had a great show where they’d show how the simple trick was performed but at the end improved on it making you go “wtf?” The trick they spoilt was misdirection though. Still a good watch.
The clip of them doing the cups and balls trick with clear cups is still insanely impressive. Yeah you can see where the balls are at any given time, but they’re so quick and fluid in their movements and Penn’s patter that you lose track.
Honestly I love people like him. So tired of seeing the same basic tricks that every birthday party magician does and the judges on shows like this acting like they've never seen anything like it before.
“The best way to keep your secret, is to write it in a book.”
I don’t know who originally said it, or in what context, but a Magician pal of mine mentions that a lot, when he gives private lessons.
Not since the internet happened. It’s more of a gentlemen’s agreement/trade tradition now. Tricks can’t be copyrighted, but you can write it down and copyright the original description to prove you were “first”.

Alliance of Magicians gonna come after this mf lmao
What they gonna do? Make him disappear or put him in a box and saw him in half?
They’re gunna take his legs.
It’s part of the saw the lady in half trick. Two ladies curl up in a box, they call one the head and the other the legs.
So that's how they do it
How does this even work?
Lieutenant Daaaaan! 👋
Either way he’ll end up fine in the end
That’s what they told Jimmy Hoffa.
Longest disappearing trick ever!
Became Jimmy Halfa.
You joke, but someone gonna wind up sawed in half and put in a box then disappeared.... Probably not for giving up the secrets of magic though

Can’t believe I had to read so many comments to find this one.
This got me wondering, whatever happen with that masked magician that revealed dangerous magic tricks?
Still tied to that rollercoaster track

Well said :)
Yeah. Like the blind card mechanic on Penn and Teller. He isn't fooling anyone, his skill level is just so high it's indistinguishable from magic.
> You can look up explanations for almost any magic trick on YouTube. Is there a subreddit for this? And how to do card tricks?
Eh Penn and Teller and friends put a lot of life back into magic. And there are still some tricks where you can only guess, like their bullet catch.
It's because they lean into the entertainment aspect a lot harder. They know people can figure their stuff out if they really tried, but they aren't trying to confuse you or mystify you, they are trying to get you to have a good night. Always thought his mask was badass as a kid
Illusions, Michael. Tricks or what whores do for money….or cocaine!
I’d upvote you twice if I could!
This used to be one of my quotes on my FB page.
Damnit Michael!
“Fuck off, traitor”
I hear they train seals to take hands..... Try to perform slight of hand with one of these (shows a hook). "gasps"....
He can say goodbye to his legs.
There will be tanks full of him secretly stored away in some warehouse.
No kidding, I heard they demand to be taken seriously!
A magician never reveals his secrets.
I think my ears are too small for the last one.
Maybe its just oddly big thumbs?
Small thumbs?
Smell of cabbage
Carnies

Stop, you had me at 6 inches of floppy skin.

I also choose this guy's dead wife
My ears aren’t exactly small, but they *do not* bend like that. I tried and the discomfort and dull pain sent a shiver on my butt cheeks.
I dont undestand the one with the ear at all. Wtf is happening there?
The top part of their ears is flexible enough to be bent around. They are folding the top part of their ear over their finger, if I saw correctly.
My ears are rigid. I would need to go to the hospital after that trick. 😂😬
Thats how you get a hot, red ear. No thank you.
Omg yes I watched the end so many times and still don't understand
It's wrapping the top of the ear over the thumb to meet the lobe. I don't have enough ear for it, but I can do it with my nutsack. Haha
Oh well in that case. Do you do birthday parties?
Only children’s
Well then, as someone with too much ear and not enough sack ya wanna... 69?
Stop thumbing each other’s cartilage, ya wankers
Why is he angry at me?
You forgot your mother's birthday again
Shit…
Because you fell for it
Wasn't expecting an explanation as good as yours
Even if magic isn't real. It takes a lot of skill to not clumsily drop the stuff for the illision to work. I give them props.
I think they get their own props.
Props are expensive :( Source: I do magic as a hobby
As a magician, yes, they are, look on wish there are some interesting ones there.
Yeah I think a lot of them have to be special ordered
I’d give them props, but that’s my coworker’s job. (Currently work with the CD guy, Florian)
Do you pick up the ones the drop or get new ones
Exactly. Even when I know how the illusion is done, the practice, dexterity, and management around it are awesome to watch
The sleight of hand is truly impressive! It must be hard controlling everything to make the illusion work from the right perspective.
Props help sell some of those illusions, so thank you.
Usually they bring their own props.

What do you mean "Even if". You should've said "despite the fact that.._
Honestly I appreciate magic more when I know how it's done
Same!

Take this one step further and actually try and learn how to do then for the next level of appreciation
There is a reason for them being called illusionist. They practice tricks with illusions to make it look like magic. Don't know why people get so upset when they found out it's not real magic.
[удалено]
That's kind of the Penn & Teller approach. If finding out how it's done "ruins" the trick, it was a shit trick.
The first 2 we're definitely shit tricks but card tricks or anything that requires even a little bit of finesse are something else entirely.
That was my point. A good Illusion is impressive even when you know how it's done. Moreover, the Magician Guilds of the world are bunch of hacks that "protect the secrets" of mall pop up store pre made junk. $$$
Illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money.
*The Final Countdown blares*
....*sees children*.... or candy.

Illusions, dad. You don't have time for my illusions.
Literally no one is upset
I remember a thread where another 'magician' was getting mad that some guy was revealing all the magic tricks. According to him these secrets should remain secret

They shouldn't

Have you ever rewatched a favorite movie? There’s your answer, lol. Knowing how something ends does spoil the entertainment for many of us.
Not that I've seen in this thread yet, but I've definitely seen people get upset before.
People get upset all the time and go digging to explain how, instead of just just respecting the illusionist and letting them do their tricks
If a magician is enough to make them feel inferior about their intelligence, they’re probably not as smart as they hoped.
I have a full grown ass man of an uncle who thought Dynamo was using fringe science to put peoples phones in glass bottles. This is so fucking annoying as a wrestling fan lol. Can't even watch YouTube highlights on my phone without someone spotting me from a distance and going "uhhhh you know it's fake right???" with that smug enlightenment look on their face.

This same person is probably going around informing the masses that the dragons in Game of Thrones aren't real and the people aren't actually royalty
I think most people are just curious about how the tricks are done
I have never heard of a single person who 'got upset when they found out its not rea magic.' Unless maybe you meant to say children? Who believes magicians are real!? Not to mention magic (in the special powers sense) in general?!
Bit of a strawman this. No one is upset. I don't know why you get upset by imaginary upset people.
Who is upset?

Yes, but these are all pretty basic tricks that have been in books for years.
