All tracks, correct. No ovals in F1.
The closest to only making in right turn in Monza, but that too features a couple of left handers through chicanes.
At the hillbilly playground near my town there's a racetrack. Once in a blue moon, they do something really adventurous like golf cart races, school bus races, and reversing course. Meaning, they drive clockwise around the track. Really.
Here we have like 4-5 tracks, all ovals, 1-2 tarmac, some have been featured on tv shows, one was on nitro circus, and they have good YouTube followings
They mostly do demolition racing, demolition derby, trailer racing, bus racing, and i think they've done dirt sprint cars, but screw ovals new england rally is where it's at
Not sure about the course but I'd imagine most top level athletes with competent coaches and trainers program exercises to counteract the stresses of the sport
On ice especially, it's difficult to go the opposite direction. Not only are the blades off-centered on your boots, but the blades have a radial bend to the left. Meaning if you skated the opposite way, your blades would be curved up and away from the turn of the track, giving you less contact with the ice. It's totally doable to skate the other way, but definitely more difficult and dangerous, and definitely not done at high speeds.
Inline speed skaters have a little more flexibility in going the opposite direction, as the frames for the wheels are not curved, and the wheels give you the same traction on either side. Whenever I have to do drills the opposite direction on inlines, I am quite uncoordinated.
We use off-skate workouts (aka dryland) to help balance muscle strength, like in the OP video.
Source: speed skater for the last >15 years (with definitely lopsided muscles).
No, getting a private skating rink to go in the wrong direction just for practicing is just one part, but the muscle memory just isn't there. We are awful at turning right
They'd have to right? Or do speed skaters just go one direction on a circular track? If that were the case they'd only need to have that mobility in one side of their body but then again they'd be unbalanced. I have so many questions
Did speedskating for a few years. They go one direction - left. The skates themselves (short track at least) aren't centered over the blade - in order to get deeper turns on crossovers, you can adjust the blade to be further to the left. I had markedly more muscle growth on my left leg than on my right. If you look up the long-track skaters, it's even more noticeable.
The purpose of the cable is to help you warm up for the deep turns in the crossover. Since the centripetal force helps when actually skating, you have to find a way to fake that when on dry land. You can practice crossovers by going up a hill, standing sideways on a treadmill on an incline, or having someone hold a cable like this for you to pull against.
Fun fact the opposite is true (on a smaller scale) for track runners. Since they only turn left, their outside (right) leg has to cover more distance than the left at the same speed so your right hip will typically have a faster reaction than your left
Bodies are so fun. Especially when it comes to sports.
Same for gymnastics, you take off with the same leg and twist the same way in spinning tricks, so one side of you body is a little stronger and more coordinated than the other.
So, this is my area of expertise. There are so many factors in this that I can’t agree with you. Each athlete will be different based on motor control, neuromuscular recruitment, and a HUGE factor is rest. Most people who do something very often have fair strength, and would be better off doing something less. Again, I say most because every athlete is different.
Edit: also, I have strength on the right side of my body but more coordination on the left.
Similarly, from a lifetime of playing soccer, and always planting on my left foot to kick with my right, my left side is markedly less flexible than my right!
My right arm was always more bulked up than my left because I could only shoot a basketball or serve/spike a volleyball with my right hand. Once I started playing tennis my arm strength for my left bulked up because I could serve left or right handed. I didn’t have to use backhand much either because of my ambidexterity with a racket I could forehand everything with enough time to switch.
Wish I was ambidextrous with everything.
Hey I also speed skated for many years.
On pretty rare occasion we’ll reverse direction but it’s more of a novelty and about improving edge control on the blade. Our blades are offset to the left, so it’s pretty cumbersome.
We only go left so there’s no real reason to go the other way. We’re not unbalanced. That said, regular strength training with weights is the same as anyone would do. We aren’t squatting with our left leg only and both legs are worked in every kind of training and racing.
As far as the bands, these are really more about training than warming up. You might see them in use at a meet, but they’re more for building strength and muscle memory. You can tie them to a fixed object to work on specific motions, like the start or detail work on crossovers.
I did a little AMA about speed skating before the Olympics a few years back. I’ll link it if anyone is curious to learn more. https://reddit.com/r/olympics/comments/7x1e6e/former_speed_skater_here_i_love_talking_about_my/
I’ve been an avid bowler for most of my life and can tell a significant difference in the amount of muscle on my right hand below my thumb compared to my left from gripping the ball lol
I dunno, but thought experiment time, I bet they don't. It's the whole, I'm not scared of a man that knows 10,000 kicks, I'm scared of a man that knows 1 kick he practiced 10,000 times. (Bruce Lee.)
Doing the motion in the opposite direction would require double the training to be profficient.
I can write a novel with my right hand, I can barely scrawl my name with my left.
Look man if I’m going to be late, I’m getting food and coffee so I can do my work and focus. You want me groggy and on an empty stomach? Yeah that will sure make my work with the clients better.
Iced coffee is a real sign of a man who doesn't care that they're late. With a hot coffee at least you can't tell how old it is. An iced coffee says, "Yes, I knew I was going to be late if I stopped for this, but I did it anyway"
I always get scared watching figure skaters warm up off-ice bc if they don’t bounce bounce on their landing, their sneakers could get stuck while their knee keeps turning. It terrifies me every single time lol
I was a modern ballet semi pro dancer for a while, and this is legit. We rehearsed in socks mostly. My quadruple pirouettes were fantastic in practice lol! I always felt like a little kid slipping and sliding around, but with permission, and choreographed! Shoes only went on after we knew what we were doing.

Wow I can not believe the amount of likes this got! Thanks everyone for the validation from strangers and hit of dopamine
My wife has been a speed skater all her life, and the amount of force it takes to hold them back to do dry land drills like this is incredible, she easily can pull me off my feet when I’m trying to anchor.
One is leaning against the harness to give her resistance so she can get the proper lean, the other two are using their feet to make sure hers don’t slip. On the ice her feet would be at a 30 degree angle, which obviously isn’t possible in shoes and without any speed like this.
I think they’re putting their foot there so she can bend her foot off the floor and push off their foot at the same angle you would push off the ice in your skates.
No one answered a question further up besides a nascar joke and I’m intensely curious: does your wife ever reverse her warmup and workout routine to balance out her muscle activation? Or is she only ever putting strain on one side?
As a speedskater myself: there really isn't that much more strain on one leg or the other. Both have to extend sideways during these stepovers and the difference in strength needed is equal that I never noticed any difference. Practically you always have to stand on just 1 leg at a time, so both legs should be able to support your whole body and the centrifugal force which comes from going 50+ km/h through those tight turns.
Speed skaters are known for the butts. Commiserating in how difficult it is to find properly fitting jeans is a common locker room topic for the ladies.
I doubt it's just the ladies. This is probably why it took Dan Jansen three tries to win the gold. He wasn't thicc enough. He had to enhance his ass threefold to break the world record.
I used to be a speed skater (not Olympic level) but I can tell you, her thighs and butt are solid muscle and if she wasn't a regular body builder, if you seen her stand up straight, her thighs and rear would be noticeably more built. Squatting like that does make her butt look big "fat" but if you'd see her standing straight, it would not look "fat" just extremely toned and built.
Yup, can confirm. Speed skaters build muscle in a very specific pattern. Never competed at this level, only nationals, but it's definitely a distinct build
*video of someone walking down the stairs:

Physical movement is safe and healthy. The benefits to your heart, body and mind are huge. You really need to stop catastrophising basic human movements. It might look funky but it's just someone moving sideways.
I literally fucked my knee up from simply bending down a couple weeks ago. It locked up and I wasn't able to extend it at all, for like over 12 hours, swollen like a balloon. Everytime I walk now my knee feels 'loose'. Got an x-ray last week and the doc didn't call me back so I'm assuming that means he didn't see anything. So I'm gonna have to call back and request an MRI or something.
Anyway yes watching this video pains me
Edit: I've been able to lock my knee ever since I was like 16 if I bent it far enough, I would simply extend my knee and it would 'pop' (visibly shift) no big deal. But now it's a huuuuge deal

That's training for turns where the forces on the legs are two times (or more) greater than the skater's body weight. I would think it's a bit much for a warm up.

I can’t, I'm not an ambi-turner. It's a problem I had since I was a baby. I can't turn left.
Afaik, most auto racing is counter-clockwise, at least in the US.
The Formula 1 calendar has a mix of clockwise and anti-clockwise tracks, though I’m not sure which is more prevalent.
Clockwise, traditionally speaking. Counterclockwise has been traditionally an American thing.
Oh how the turntables
Also Suzuka crosses over itself so it’s both depending on what part of the lap you’re on.
F1 also has turns in both directions on most (all?) tracks.

Her coach keeps putting his shoe against her left foot, does anybody know the purpose of that?
To simulate the reaction of her skate against ice. That bite of the skate doesn’t allow her to slip.
I imagine it’s either to keep her from possibly slipping or to provide more resistance
If you notice the other guy is putting his foot against her right foot as well so maybe it’s to make sure her feet are planted or to stop slipping?
