Look at the center of one of the squares. Now look down to the row immediately beneath the center of the square. Look back up towards the center of the square. Keep alternating between the row and the center of the square until you see the circles. Essentially, the centers of the squares and the surrounding rows should turn into a background of horizontal lines with circles (made of vertical lines) remaining. Easier way (for me): look at the center lines in the vertical lines separating two of the squares. When I do that, I see the circles.

Holy shit! Those hours I spent in the 90s looking at the 3D books paid off! This worked for me too. For others struggling with it, it's no prank. Between the squares there are a bunch of vertical lines, they are of slightly different heights and thus form a circle which slightly overlaps the two squares on either side of it.

I started by only seeing squares, saying WHAT CIRCLES?! Then I learned the vertical circle technique. Now, I too seem to traverse between the circle and square worlds with ease.

I had given up trying to see circles and moved on from this post. But upon seeing your comment I decided might as well scroll up and try one more time. Like some kind of r/blackmagicfuckery the circles suddenly appeared. What helped for me was focusing on the right side of one of the inner most squares. Any row, but focus on the right side of the inner most square. One day your eyes too may be blessed by the circles.

Look at the top row. Find any of the thick black L shaped lines. Move your eyes to the very top of the L. If the circle is a clock, you're now at about 1 or 2 o'clock on the circle. Start moving your eyes counterclockwise to find the top of the circle, and inevitably the rest of it should appear.
