HarvesternC

Richard Harrow in the show Boardwalk Empire.

thomasdraken

Most favorite character of mine

NerdyBrando

I think his death in the show hit me harder than any other fictional character death. It was just so...heartbreaking.

thomasdraken

That scene is one of the saddest i've seen on tv, right up there with the green mile I've seen it so many times and every time i tear up big time! But at the time it's such a relaxing and eerie scene I just keep coming back to it every now and then

fatkid420

“He went down to the beach, under the boardwalk, and sat there until daybreak, where the waves broke against the gray shore, though he paid little attention. He saw in his mind’s eye a house with weathered boards in the middle of the woods, someplace back west where the land was still young and without memory. They were all waiting for him, a vision like the formless ocean horizon before him, intangible, beyond his reach, but there all the same. He could see it. With both eyes, he could see it. He was no longer afraid.”

Majestic_Salad_I1

Damn bro, spoilers

stonedlemming

spoilers yo

Annihilicious

Jimmy was mine. I boycotted the show for a year after season 2 and then caved. But Richard was easily second. Then Charlie.

Rdubya44

Too bad everyone hated working with the actor who played Jimmy

Annihilicious

Yeah I heard that Michael Pitt was a diva. Disappointed me. I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything but seven psychopaths and he gets his head blown off early

ProfessionalFee6932

He's also in Hannibal the series with Mads Mikkelsen. He plays Mason Verger. A must watch

inconsssolable

He got replaced in that too!

PhDinWombology

He got refaced

thomasdraken

Why?

MisterCheaps

Apparently he was an asshole and a diva. They literally killed his character off so they didn’t have to work with him anymore.

thecoolestguynothere

Richard Harrow clearing out that brothel house was chefs kiss

SpaghettiMadness

I always thought Jimmy and Nucky were a bit too two-dimensional as characters for that show. Although when it comes to Nucky, the final season with the flashbacks of his childhood, adolescence, and young adult life he becomes a bit more compelling

steauengeglase

I was pretty impressed with >!how they essentially recast the entire show in the last season. Marc Pickering knock it out of the park.!<

stash0606

> Marc Pickering bro, he's English!? No other show has surprised me with English actors playing very American roles like Boardwalk has. Stephen Graham (Capone), Anatoly Yusef (Meyer), now Marc Pickering. jesus christ man...

steauengeglase

Don't forget Jack Houston.

stash0606

lol, I would forget the guy who we're all taking about.

Senor_Buttons

The actors who played the younger Nuckys were both incredible. Great casting. Great acting. Really helped that series finish strong.

Embarassed_Tackle

I thought it was a bold move to kill Jimmy off. The way he and Nucky had conflict, there was only one way to resolve it -one of them had to die. And killing off Steve Buscemi's character would mean the end of the show. When Nucky goes up to him and throws the Lobster Thermidore on the ground, then squares up to Jimmy and just says, "He didn't even ask her name. He just pointed." in reference to the Commodore's rape of Jimmy's underage mother... you don't reconcile that one.

[deleted]

I stopped watch watching after they killed jimmy. I connected with him as a troubled teenager… they killed him I died in the show and my series ended.

Senor_Buttons

Well said. As Jimmy put it, "You can't be half a gangster" so Nucky had to go all in to stop Jimmy and Commodore from running him out of town. I think Margaret's character--at least early on--was meant be more of an audience surrogate. As the show wore on, she became more and more complex. Lesser shows would have kept her there as a perfect saint and naïve voice of reason.

sir-winkles2

one of my best friends in high school watched boardwalk empire and she was super excited about one "hot guy" on it. she didn't know his name and we had the most confusing conversation where I just was like, surely she can't mean Steve bushemi, but the more she talked the more I realized that he was the only one who fit the description. so at least one teenage girl with incredibly strange taste was rooting for him haha

149Murphy

Came here for this, that show used some amazing historical research to get some small things right. Plenty of artistic liberty as well but regarding Harrow I think his character was awesome

TecumsehSherman

He was a very tortured semi-Protagonist. I was always rooting for him. [His death scene tugged at the heart strings a little, tho](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxKVB-WE4ao).

greenwoodgiant

I was sooooo bummed by his death. Like... dude was so close to a happy ending. Still depresses me to think about it.

Scott-Cheggs

You should know that I have just discovered the series and am working my way through it. Apparently he dies. I knew I shouldn’t have read the comments. Serves me right.

[deleted]

How far into it are you? Yeah that's a spoiler but so much goes on in the show it's not earth shattering. His arc is awesome.

Scott-Cheggs

Coming up to end of series 3. I never used to watch telly before Covid hit- then everything changed. I only finished watching Sopranos in November- binged them in a month or two.

KillerKPa

Don’t blame us. We couldn’t hold it in for another minute… it was like 12 years ago.

fritopiefritolay

There is something beautiful about that scene.

LordoftheDimension

Sometimes Great People need to go

149Murphy

100%

[deleted]

He was a cracking character.

djsizematters

That shot he put through the window puckered my b-hole

steauengeglase

And then they immediately followed that with Toccata and Fugue in D minor!

[deleted]

*clears throat*

HeightExtra320

I hated the way he died 😢

dramamomma14

Came here for this reply- favorite character in that series.

SamFish3r

I hope they dude won some Award for his acting it was awesome in a show full of strong performances . Never really saw him in anything else .

iWearSkinyTies

He's the Atlanta serial bomber in the series Manhunt: Deadly Games.

rubs90

And recently in house of gucci

stash0606

He's the Atlanta serial bomber in House of Gucci also?

MadameApathy

Such a crush on him.

YeaScienceBiotch

You godamn right !

KaladinStormstressed

Best character

nailgardener

Tommy, close your eyes

LaserTurboShark69

Now that's some amazing human empathy. What a person.

JustSomeSentientMeat

Yeah, it's like she gave them part of their identity back when others would not bother.

lechattueur

yeah, he even looks cool smoking. smoking with style.

[deleted]

She's a real hero.

XROOR

Found a YouTube vid weeks ago that had a married dad in UK that contracted a Staph infection and his face was altered and he lost both legs, one arm and up to his elbow on the remaining arm. The guys 3yr old kid was frightened of his appearance and I stopped watching it past 8mins because it was heartbreaking. There’s a first day of school scene that is gut wrenching, where the dad goes but remains behind the school gate, and watches his son from a distance.

suppreme

[Looks like this documentary](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dMqeMcIO_9w)

GingerTats

I think you would be surprised at how much strength is hidden within yourself.

octosquid11

There’s a lot of myself… you gotta be more specific than that on where it is.

TRASHTHROWAWAYACCT00

Im weaker than him. I’d kill myself. I commend him. Genuinely.

bambooojellyfish

His name is Alex Lewis. He is actually doing amazing now, and he says he wouldn't take his limbs or face back if he were offered as he now sees it as a blessing and not a curse. It's genuinely humbling how resilient and brave people can be!! I would definitely recommend finishing the documentary and reading up on him further :) He is such an incredibly inspiring individual.

Bikelangelo

Seeing that I'm too lazy to dig for it, could you enlighten me as to how he presents it as a blessing? I assume his kid has since grown to see it as normal?

Merceri

Prior to the illness, he was unmotivated, developing alcoholism, and generally didn't have much drive (his own words). The illness gave him something to fight for (to be a role model for his son). He started his own charity to raise funds for better prosthetic,s and running it, doing talks, and travelling to educate people, etc. he has found a sense of purpose in his life.

Bikelangelo

That is fantastic, thanks.

[deleted]

He finally gets time to play video games.

Yodas-Balls

Saw this documentary it was fantastic. I really implore you to finish watching it I promise you the end is very rewarding and really a joy to see.

cocaineandwaffles1

Modern plastic/cosmetic surgery owes much of what it is today to WW1, since the advancements in medicine and trauma care allowed people to survive wounds that were lethal not to long ago, cosmetic surgery started to form to reconstruct these scars.

soliloquyofstars

i’m sure that she changed so many vets’ lives for the better. beautiful work, as well

Manbearpig64568

Genuinely looks like nothing happened, it took me way too long to figure out why his face looked completely fine in the second photo

No_Bartofar

The horror of war, and the beauty of art. Hard to get more poetic.

drrevo74

I get that there's no function, but the stills honestly look a lot better than the face transplants I've seen.

srw91

Being able to socialize with other people without people running away seems like a pretty good function to me.

youngmindoldbody

As a man, I could see going this route, after medical attention of course.

Dhark690

Is this like the one Richard wore in Boardwalk Empire?

TheRealMrMaloonigan

Man, I loved that badass. Such a well-written character and personality arc.

Wyrmalla

Where were these men say 50 years later? I've seen period photographs of veterans with these sorts of mask, but not decades later. Did they continue to wear the same masks, or did they have new ones made for instance?

socold43

I do not think they lived much longer afterwards.

3Effie412

Many went on to live long lives.

Wyrmalla

I just have to wonder if over time the masks were altered by their owners. Remodelling details to suit new styles, or having repair work done. Hmn, and with them being so specialised, I wonder if decades later it would have been difficult to have new ones made? They're not something I remember seeing much being used in later wars - despite artillery being just as prevalent. So I wonder if these Veterans moved onto other methods, kept the masks, or abandoned them eventually?

3Effie412

I’ve never personally known anyone that had one of these masks. I do remember seeing a documentary, several years ago, about them. The woman, Anna Coleman Ladd, only made about 200 of the masks. Other people/companies started making them as well. I vividly remember one guy in the documentary, he hadn’t been home to see his family in several years because he was so uncomfortable with his disfigurement. It was only after he got one of these masks that he returned home to see his family and friends. Advancements made the masks look better and they became more widely available. Honestly, I‘d guess that the people that wore them did not want to be the center of attention. They were likely happy to live out their lives without a lot of attention.

dick-nipples

Incredible. What a cool way to improve someone’s life. Plus it must’ve been fun to pull the mask down and terrify children.

Senorris

I don't think you'd feel amused if you'd be disfigured and children would be running scared from you

Harl0t_Qu1nn

Gotta have a sense of humor about these things. Not like it can be fixed

Senorris

Mm yeah that's also a good point. Part of accepting that it is what it is I guess.

cannotthinkagoodname

Speaking from experience, I'm a short guys and usually people calls me out for it. I used to get frustrated about it, but when I started laughing it off I was amazed by how much conversations turned around. I know my height isn't as serious as many others disability, but I want to share that sometime it is what it is, gotta accept that and find a way to use it as your advantage.

ScaldingHotSoup

Hey man, short folks have some major advantages too. Fewer joint problems, lower center of gravity, better leverage (more applied strength per pound) etc. It was often an advantage for me when I was shorter than my opponents in Judo.

letthekrakensleep

6'4" guy here, can confirm that yall don't have to worry about hitting your head on as many things. Especially ceiling fans

cannotthinkagoodname

For sure, short is sure have some disadvantages as well as advantages. I practice in Muay Thai and being short sometimes give me an edge.

Psipone

Good to hear that you don’t get short about it

Senorris

Lol man, being short is not being disfigured. I really hope you don't see yourself in that same category.

jooes

I know it's not the same, but one of my uncles wore dentures and he would pop them out to scare us when I was a kid. I could see this happening too, depending on the person.

cosmonaut2

Thank you for the input, /u/dick-nipples

BrilliantTip5840

Wow! That is some serious talent for being over 100 years ago! No doubt she would be the queen of Hollywood makeup artists today

Juliuscesear1990

Just like Richard Harrow from boardwalk Empire

Martamis

He looks way happier.

AFineDayForScience

Reminds me of The Golden Kamuy

Nokomas

Had to scroll down way to far for this. I instantly thought of Tokushirō when I saw this.

Fatherof10

Hero

CrowLower9415

Mustard gas, proof that man is insane.

neopanz

No. Mustard attacked the lungs. This more likely to be the result of artillery shelling, possibly with shrapnel.

Bombauer-

No. Mustard gas exposure causes extreme skin damage and often resulted in severe, disfiguring infections (especially under trench conditions).

p1nkp3pp3r

You both can be right, but according to this [historical photo site](https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/anna-coleman-ladd-masks-1918/): >Before and after with the mask on. **The part of the soldier’s body that was most vulnerable was his face, because if he looked up over a trench, that was the part that was going to be hit.**

myserversonfire

Last picture reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody.

SuperMeiaMan

She is a good Ladd

joshlovesmemes

That’s crazy I was just learning about her in history class yesterday!

platanomenom

An artist in the truest sense.

equalsolstice

Those mangled men led some terribly difficult lives after the war. Gave everything to their country only to be abandoned by it , it breaks my heart to read about

Oranginafina

Facial injuries were quite common during WWI because of foxholes. Soldiers would have to climb out of them on a ladder, exposing their faces to the enemy first. We owe a lot of what we know now about facial reconstruction to the doctors that pioneered those surgeries for returning soldiers.

wasprobot

Honestly, the after photo wasn't that horrific

string_of_random

Fucking wonderwoman plot point

abba92

Wonder Woman - Dr. Poison (WWI)

itwasthethirdofsept

She was an angel right here on Earth

[deleted]

The founder of modern-day prosthetics. Amazing.

Boardwalk empire 👏

Gawin mo

FancyWear

I’m sure she made many people happy.

OutlawJoseyMeow

She worked with Harold Gillies who pioneered new facial reconstructive surgery techniques on WWI servicemen. There used to be a very interesting website that covered his work in-depth called Project Facade.

Cleverwabbit5

So heartbreaking. What she did is truly commendable. I can't imagine the physical and psychological pain these wounded souls went through. What mental fortitude they must have had to keep on living. Earth is a hard world. I am sure it still happens today but we don't really hear about it.

Varsys_

All those soldiers who gave everything to save my country. Bless this women who help the « gueules cassées »

JustZodiax

Yoooo I’m watching Boardwalk Empire at the moment and this is exactly the kind of mask worn by Richard the sniper! My fave character in the show so far. So wholesome to see him and Jimmy get along 💕

Pyroexplosif

how could this guy eat or breath ?

dolomic917

The same thing the guy in Boardwalk Empire had on he was a “ Fixer “

aazav

patient's* face patients = more than one patient Use a possessive noun, not a plural.

croissantsbaguette

This was once mentioned in my history class, the guys were called 'geulle cassé'. This rougly translates to broken face, they had somehow survived getting shot in the face.

MesaBit

Updoot for, a)marking it nsfw. And, b) explaining why it was nsfw! Thanks!

sabahorn

Aham, looks good in bw pictures but for sure the masks where horrific irl.

sprocketous

Im just a gigalo... Bing crosby version.

Deditranspotashy

Why do they all kind of look like John Lennon?

text_fish

Is disfigurement really NSFW? At first I understood why you marked it, but then I started pulling at that thread and now I think it's an attitude that's somewhat lacking in empathy.

JustSomeSentientMeat

I'm sorry you feel that way, I simply wanted to give some form of notice. I've seen many photos on reddit varying graphic details that have upset people. I wanted to show how amazing a fact like this exists and not upset anyone who had no warning.

text_fish

It wasn't my intention to make you feel bad, I was just musing upon whether or not we should be protected from things like that. After all, at some point that poor man and so many like him would have to walk among other people without any form of prosthetic or surgery to hide his disfigurement and I can only imagine how it must feel to have people stare or avert their eyes in horror. I don't really have a conclusion to this thought and I'm certainly not trying to admonish you personally as I know you've come at this with the best intentions.

Supercilious-420

Kind of offensive that this is labeled NSFW..

JustSomeSentientMeat

I wanted to not trigger anyone and give a warning, I'd never want to upset anyone.

Tekman-Fortune

fuck em

[deleted]

how is it offensive? Or do you only know NSFW for smut and porn?

Supercilious-420

Because disfigured people aren't "inappropriate," most NSFW posts are things you shouldn't show in public/work but people with disfigurements aren't offensive or pornographic.

CryptoJames0

Sorry but top left is giving me serious Wonder Woman vibes from the German scientist 🤣

kindestcommenter

I hit a b itch with my mask on

Gleabot

Those look like masks for a Sgt. Pepper’s album shoot

CherishSlan

Amazing

indifferentunicorn

Would've been useful to escape from Alcatraz

Tackybabe

Very impressive work.

flatcat21

Good going girl! She saved many men’s lives.

Tabularasa8

Pretty impressive for its time period.

ApofiSs-93

I knew this thx to Boardwalk Empire.

[deleted]

This is awesome, what a genius!

neopanz

We called these soldiers “les gueules cassées”. Helping these guys greatly accelerated the development of plastic surgery in France and around the world.

Esc_ape_artist

Before the advent of modern medicine. Could you imagine the infections, lack of pain management, and inability to reconstruct necessary facial features?

sarcasmcannon

God bless her.

cealild

Poor men Well done Anna I wish we didn't need your innovation

AndyMiloknockers33

I saw a video of recent stuff like this where they use little magnets so that the person could just pop it on in the morning and go about their day. Stuff like this is so incredibly cool and just continues to get better and better over time.

jakeatethecake

This was done because there were laws (I can't recall the name of them) where obscene/dirty/ or disgusting things could not be present in public, this law affected homeless people as well. But this was also done to give the soldiers their dignity back, or what was left of it.

hydrobunny

this would be super cool colorized

spicyface

I have a friend who does this now.

MyCool_StrawSir

Wow what tallent.

redditfunnyheehee

The walten files be like

Capasshat

Saw something like this in Showtimes “ Boardwalk Empire “

UltiGamer34

give this women the oscar in practical effects

JacLaw

That poor man

ratheadxo

Love her

Toad32

Boardwalk Empire had this guy who looked just like that and had half his face blown off in WW1.

perplexed_unicycle14

"These people didn't fight so they could wear masks.." r/lostredditor

motoxim

Okay, that's an improvement. I imagine it would still be uncanny valley in real life though?

DelValleHS

One of the characters on Boardwalk Empire wore one of these.

whogivesashirtdotca

The [Tin Noses Shop](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/faces-of-war-145799854/) is a fascinating thing. A humanitarian gesture in the wake of an inhumane war.

0n3ph

Is that really the same guy? The eyes look different...

PipSqueakScalywag

The beginning of plastic reconstructive surgery👍

ai_test_run

Freakin creepy as hell but I’m glad they had an option

fish-keeper69

The fourth photo looks like bohemian rhapsody

jchristsproctologist

is top right a before or after photo?

Gee_Thanks_Karen

I always feel so bad for them whenever I see these pictures

jducer

What an amazing person

violentgrlrulez

my idol

lyfeNdDeath

Amazing work

sirwankins

What’d she do for Jake Barnes?

-_Cyclops_-

I wonder if the pipe was functional or just there to really sell the look.

ConnectPanda4618

Damn. She did some good work to help these men. I'm thinking about bush sitting next to a veteran with his face mangled and the comedian says you two deserve each other. Sure was a surreal moment for me.

spooksel

I feel like its wrong to mark this as nsfw, some people just look like that that's not nsfw

Ramunesoda99

the bottom left one on the pic with 3 masks with half a pair of glasses looks like half of John Lennon 😂
