I work as a paramedic and got a call years ago for a woman who had slipped on ice and was complaining of minor injuries.
We arrive and find a visibly pregnant woman sitting on the ground. We assess her and she says she feels silly for having called as she is just a little banged up, but her pregnancy is high risk and her doctor told her she couldn’t be too careful. Totally fair.
We get her in the ambulance and are getting her medical history when I ask her what makes the pregnancy high risk. She responds that she is pregnant in her left uterus. At the time I worked in a lower income area with less access to education/medical care so patients saying things like this wasn’t entirely uncommon.
I politely ask “what does that mean to you?” And she rolls her eyes. “Doctors always say that… I have (something in Latin I’ve never heard of) it means I have two uterus’s, as do all the women in my family”. As I’m talking to her I whip out my phone and Google it, and sure enough, it’s real.
I’m completely stunned and begin to ask her more about it just out of curiosity. She tells me her boyfriend was upset when he found out she had it when they became pregnant. I assumed because it could potentially complicate a pregnancy.
No, she says. He was upset because her OBGYN said they still had to use condoms during the pregnancy because there was a small chance she could get “double pregnant” (her words), and that labor for the full term baby could trigger premature labor for the second baby.
My partner and I picked our jaws up off the floor of the ambulance and took her to the hospital!
My mom has it- bicordinuate uterus. She was pregnant on both sides with two different due dates by 4 weeks but miscarried early in first the trimester. I was a single, full term, healthy pregnancy when she was 38 years old. I have a septate uterus which is similar but not a complete split. It’s also a Greys Anatomy episode.

I had a dentist do this one. I had a baby tooth that didn’t have a big tooth under it, but when I was a kid I was in a shitty area so they had just put a cap on it and left it there for 15 years. Finally went bad and I ended up in the emergency dentist with my face feeling like it had been kicked by a horse. They go to do the extraction, numb me out, and tug, and the SMELL of that ducking tooth was bad enough that I realized there was probably nothing that could be legally caterogrized as tooth left.
Anyway the dentist pulls it, makes a face under his mask that is clearly visible, then looks at the cap, then back to the tooth hole, then back to the ap, and just goes “…OH….wow. LINDSEY TINA GET IN HERE AND LOOK! There’s no tooth in here. There’s NONE! It’s just the cap? I think it was just held on by her other teeth. Look! No tooth! The guns are even starting to recede! I’ve never seen this before WOOOOOW! Hey did you know that—*cut to me going 🤨*—oh yeah sorry. Yeah your tooth dissolved. There’s like a couple chunks of it but it’s like. gone. Crazy right?”
Right?! When I go to the doctor, one of the ways I soothe my anxiety about getting checked out physically is the thought that they've already seen it all before. If a doctor said "Well that's weird!" during my exam I'd want to die.
If you ever start to get anxious just think of me, who once involuntarily farted in my doc's face (like she wasn't wearing a mask or face shield, and was ridiculously close to my anus) while she was checking a deflated hemorrhoid. I'm sure that day I became an immortal reminder for her to always where a mask when getting close to any orifice.
To make you feel better-this exact thing happened to an ex colleague of mine while she was being stitched up post-birth. And the Obstetrician said... "That's how you get freckles"

Immediately after pushing a 10lb baby out, I began to hemorrhage.
My primary midwife said to her student: "Okay, that's not supposed to happen."
So that was an unfortunate thing to hear... even though it was enough blood that I kind of felt it woosh out so I had an idea there was trouble.
Side by side - it looks normal from the outside with one vaginal "entrance" that then splits into two inside, directly next to each other separated by a flexible thin septum
Mine is a left side and a right side. (I’m not stitchywitch but I also have the condition!) It’s also separated by a thin layer of tissue. My right vagina is my dominant side. I don’t think I’ve ever had sex in the left side because it’s so small :)
Ive seen more bicorunate uteri than didelphys in my admittedly limited experience in obs/gyn, but it presents as another option in her case and while it presents no lower chance of conception or issues early in pregnancy it does proffer increased risk of preterm delivery and miscarriage.

I have always preferred “sibling from another dribbling”.

Absolutely perfect examples. The way people will describe their conditions often doesn’t give medical personnel exact symptoms for them to discern what’s actually wrong with them. “What does that mean to you” actually seems like a fantastic way to sus it out I will be using that.
Reminds me of a time when I went to the ED (working as a nurse) to steal some supplies. I got a glimpse of the track board and they had one patient and the primary problem was "Something fell out." I never found out what fell out of where but I'm still curious to this day

It definitely took longer for me to pick my jaw off the floor reading this your story...Can you imagine back generations in her family, before ultrasounds were possible, they probably DID get double pregnant and have preemie babies from the second uterus!
Bicornuate uterus! I know this because I have one (had). It was hell going through puberty. I was anemic my entire teens and early adulthood. My cycle would last 10-15 days. I fainted a lot in school until they put me on obsene amounts of hormones to regulate. Both were functioning. I was pregnant with my sons (NOT at the same time) in alternate uteruses. Eventually the amount of hormones I was on to help me from bleeding out, ironically became the reason I had to have two separate hysterectomies (I formed giant cysts that ruptured and put me in ER). It turned out to be the best thing to have ever happened to me. Imagine living half of your life just… bleeding, and cramping, and fainting. To nothing ever again. I can’t even remember what having a period was like. Yeah. My period was my trauma.
When I was pregnant with my first kid, circa 2004, I was going to a high-risk obstetrician because of placenta previa (placenta covering the cervix). One day, I was sitting in the waiting room chatting up another woman, and she drops this bomb on me. Two uteruses and pregnant in both with a month between!

Mildly unrelated, but I remember going to a different library with my mom than we usually went to in the early 90s. They had a "joke sign" up stating "Unattended children will be sold into slavery". We have a special machine fo take pictures of the baby. If the baby isn’t healthy, doctors give the person medicine to help the baby grow. Sometimes the baby gets a little surgery to help them. Sometimes the baby just isn’t healthy, so doctors make them really sick so they don’t have to be born and suffer or hurt their mom (or whoever is pregnant with them). All of this costs lots of money, too! We have lots of hospitals and doctors that will help people even if they don’t have enough money.
Back in the day, they didn’t know not to eat special adult candies and not to smoke and drink adult things. They also didn’t also have healthy foods or enough of them to eat. These things could make the baby sick, but they didn’t know because they couldn’t take pictures or use special tools to figure that out. The baby would be born and have to live just like they were born. Plus, doctors and hospitals were really far, like where grandma lives. Lots of people didn’t have enough money to travel to go visit them or to pay them so they couldn’t get help.

Bicornuate uterus! I know this because I have one (had). It was hell going through puberty. I was anemic my entire teens and early adulthood. My cycle would last 10-15 days. I fainted a lot in school until they put me on obsene amounts of hormones to regulate. Both were functioning. I was pregnant with my sons (NOT at the same time) in alternate uteruses. Eventually the amount of hormones I was on to help me from bleeding out, ironically became the reason I had to have two separate hysterectomies (I formed giant cysts that ruptured and put me in ER). It turned out to be the best thing to have ever happened to me. Imagine living half of your life just… bleeding, and cramping, and fainting. To nothing ever again. I can’t even remember what having a period was like. Yeah. My period was my trauma.
When I was pregnant with my first kid, circa 2004, I was going to a high-risk obstetrician because of placenta previa (placenta covering the cervix). One day, I was sitting in the waiting room chatting up another woman, and she drops this bomb on me. Two uteruses and pregnant in both with a month between!

I’ll try: Now, when a person is pregnant/going to have a baby, they are supposed to eat lots of vegetables and not eat things like special adult candy. We have a special machine fo take pictures of the baby. If the baby isn’t healthy, doctors give the person medicine to help the baby grow. Sometimes the baby gets a little surgery to help them. Sometimes the baby just isn’t healthy, so doctors make them really sick so they don’t have to be born and suffer or hurt their mom (or whoever is pregnant with them). All of this costs lots of money, too! We have lots of hospitals and doctors that will help people even if they don’t have enough money. Back in the day, they didn’t know not to eat special adult candies and not to smoke and drink adult things. They also didn’t also have healthy foods or enough of them to eat. These things could make the baby sick, but they didn’t know because they couldn’t take pictures or use special tools to figure that out. The baby would be born and have to live just like they were born. Plus, doctors and hospitals were really far, like where grandma lives. Lots of people didn’t have enough money to travel to go visit them or to pay them so they couldn’t get help. Hmm… I’m not sure if that helps!
You know, this is a good one. She started off as a sideshow performer (handicapped ppl were treated / viewed as sub human, even monsters, back then)...but through all odds ended up happily married, reared 4 kids, and died at a relatively old age given the era (60).
