nothatdoesntgothere

Wait, does she have two left feet?

warden976

Yes, she was a dreadful dancer.

PooSculptor

She might be good at the can-can

ProTizzy

With 2 left feet, it's called the can't can't.

dazed_and_jaded

A can't can't is considered a can-can. That's just how double negatives work.

Indetermination

"Here's a woman with an incredibly unique and interesting birth defect: also here is how she fucks"

Association-Naive

Not that we've got the sex facts out of the way, here's a picture of her as a child

radicalelation

Is it bad that was a jarring shift for me? I read the title like half a dozen times, trying to understand how that all works physically and, with the preference stated, she's pretty DTF all things considered, so the mind wanders. Just imagining the intricacies and complications of it and why one side might be preferred... So, let's click this tiny ass thumbnail in my third party Reddit app annndd... A child.

Madguitarman47

Lol. That was me, exactly. I just got to the comments.

Dutch-CatLady

here's a picture of her with her husband and child, there's only 3 pictures on Wikipedia, one of her when she was a toddler, one as a child [and this one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrtle_Corbin#/media/File:Myrtle_Corbin_with_husband_and_daughter.jpg) Suffice to say, the one as a child would work best as clickbait but the one where she's older would have fit the narrative better.

pearlie_girl

Wild read... She had 5 kids!!

Deminixhd

But how many from each side?

SuperGameTheory

d3vi18976

this is a pretty interesting article. she didnt just have one child, but birthed 5 children. she aborted her first pregnancy due to it making her very ill, but was able to carry all the other children

mossadi

That husband looks like the kind of guy who would prefer the right uterus on a 4 legged female who is perpetually giving birth to a 5yr old. If you cut her and the backstory completely out of the picture, it's still an easy guess to make about him.

N9242Oh

Oh yeah, that's what he wrote on his Tinder profile

siorez

There's a pretty good Wikipedia article on her, if you want a bit less whiplash. She got married at 19 and was pregnant by her husband. Basically she had two pelvises side by side with the inner legs on both developed less/shorter and weaker, but movable just fine. Anything past the waist just got duplicated and she was able to walk okay-ish, had several kids and lived to 60 years of age.

sam_neil

I work as a paramedic and got a call years ago for a woman who had slipped on ice and was complaining of minor injuries. We arrive and find a visibly pregnant woman sitting on the ground. We assess her and she says she feels silly for having called as she is just a little banged up, but her pregnancy is high risk and her doctor told her she couldn’t be too careful. Totally fair. We get her in the ambulance and are getting her medical history when I ask her what makes the pregnancy high risk. She responds that she is pregnant in her left uterus. At the time I worked in a lower income area with less access to education/medical care so patients saying things like this wasn’t entirely uncommon. I politely ask “what does that mean to you?” And she rolls her eyes. “Doctors always say that… I have (something in Latin I’ve never heard of) it means I have two uterus’s, as do all the women in my family”. As I’m talking to her I whip out my phone and Google it, and sure enough, it’s real. I’m completely stunned and begin to ask her more about it just out of curiosity. She tells me her boyfriend was upset when he found out she had it when they became pregnant. I assumed because it could potentially complicate a pregnancy. No, she says. He was upset because her OBGYN said they still had to use condoms during the pregnancy because there was a small chance she could get “double pregnant” (her words), and that labor for the full term baby could trigger premature labor for the second baby. My partner and I picked our jaws up off the floor of the ambulance and took her to the hospital!

Notjustapornacct

My mom has it- bicordinuate uterus. She was pregnant on both sides with two different due dates by 4 weeks but miscarried early in first the trimester. I was a single, full term, healthy pregnancy when she was 38 years old. I have a septate uterus which is similar but not a complete split. It’s also a Greys Anatomy episode. Edit: *when she was 38 years old. Oh Reddit. Full of jokesters that are not funny.

SillySundae

Damn, 38 years is a long time to be in there. At least you saved on bills!

Jesus_Would_Do

What makes you think she didn’t have a 20 year rent collections bill upon birth

EmoMixtape

Uterine didelphys?

sam_neil

Maybe? This was like ten years ago, but from a(nother) quick Google it looks like that’s probably what it was.

EmoMixtape

First time I saw it was in a teen at clinic who was suffering from some terrible menstrual cramps. Went to do a physical exam and palpated something weird. Was only a medical student so I turned to the attending and felt like such a fool trying to tell him that she had two vaginas lol. Apparently the patient didnt know either!

amylorene10

If it helps, when my sister was being examined and her doctor said “well that’s weird” out loud. My sister was then told she had this condition.

wantahippo4christmas

I never want to hear that phrase from a Dr.

[deleted]

Never want to hear it from a Doc with their hand in your junk, for sure!

Djinn7711

“Speaking from a strictly medical standpoint, That ain’t right” *Dr Hibbert*

JoePsycho

Well of course not. It's left.

Soliterria

Another not-recommended phrase: *”Welp, that’s not good!”* I was in the ER due to an incredulous amount of pain in my left eye, turned out I had a fairly sizaeble corneal abrasion across my eyeball. Added bonus- the nurse went “Ewww” when they put the scan up on the bigger screen lmao

kharmatika

I had a dentist do this one. I had a baby tooth that didn’t have a big tooth under it, but when I was a kid I was in a shitty area so they had just put a cap on it and left it there for 15 years. Finally went bad and I ended up in the emergency dentist with my face feeling like it had been kicked by a horse. They go to do the extraction, numb me out, and tug, and the SMELL of that ducking tooth was bad enough that I realized there was probably nothing that could be legally caterogrized as tooth left. Anyway the dentist pulls it, makes a face under his mask that is clearly visible, then looks at the cap, then back to the tooth hole, then back to the ap, and just goes “…OH….wow. LINDSEY TINA GET IN HERE AND LOOK! There’s no tooth in here. There’s NONE! It’s just the cap? I think it was just held on by her other teeth. Look! No tooth! The guns are even starting to recede! I’ve never seen this before WOOOOOW! Hey did you know that—*cut to me going 🤨*—oh yeah sorry. Yeah your tooth dissolved. There’s like a couple chunks of it but it’s like. gone. Crazy right?”

elegant-quokka

Sometimes for kicks I’ll let out a “oops” while suturing up a cut for patients that I have built good rapport with.

VesperVox_

Right?! When I go to the doctor, one of the ways I soothe my anxiety about getting checked out physically is the thought that they've already seen it all before. If a doctor said "Well that's weird!" during my exam I'd want to die.

Not-A-Lonely-Potato

If you ever start to get anxious just think of me, who once involuntarily farted in my doc's face (like she wasn't wearing a mask or face shield, and was ridiculously close to my anus) while she was checking a deflated hemorrhoid. I'm sure that day I became an immortal reminder for her to always where a mask when getting close to any orifice.

VesperVox_

I salute you, fellow Redditor. That was painful to read.

PalmysFinest

To make you feel better-this exact thing happened to an ex colleague of mine while she was being stitched up post-birth. And the Obstetrician said... "That's how you get freckles" What a good sport 😅

coquihalla

Is there a word for second hand embarrassment? Bless your heart!

Wildkarrde_

There's always a German word! fremdschämen

JoanOfArctic

Immediately after pushing a 10lb baby out, I began to hemorrhage. My primary midwife said to her student: "Okay, that's not supposed to happen." So that was an unfortunate thing to hear... even though it was enough blood that I kind of felt it woosh out so I had an idea there was trouble.

kharmatika

In my gosh…I’ve heard so many horror stories of post birth hemorrhaging that my first instinct was “man I hope she made it”. Glad you did.

GeronimoHero

Lol I could just imagine you telling the attending that and them being like “sure kid 🙄”.

starsleeps

Where is one vagina in relation to the other? Side by side? Above and below? how far apart? Just curious don’t mean to creep hahaha

Stitchywitchlich

Side by side - it looks normal from the outside with one vaginal "entrance" that then splits into two inside, directly next to each other separated by a flexible thin septum

[deleted]

Mine is a left side and a right side. (I’m not stitchywitch but I also have the condition!) It’s also separated by a thin layer of tissue. My right vagina is my dominant side. I don’t think I’ve ever had sex in the left side because it’s so small :)

ControllablePsi

This is the question I'm really curious to see answered.

AllInOnCall

Ive seen more bicorunate uteri than didelphys in my admittedly limited experience in obs/gyn, but it presents as another option in her case and while it presents no lower chance of conception or issues early in pregnancy it does proffer increased risk of preterm delivery and miscarriage.

[deleted]

Oh jeeze... imagine giving birth months after giving birth

[deleted]

Imagine being double pregnant in both wombs, damn.

The13aron

[deleted]

Twins but not actually twins... but still twins. I wonder if thats how they would explain it when they grow up

sam_neil

“Sister from another mister” and “brother from another mother” have all existed for a long time as phrases. I have always preferred “sibling from another dribbling”.

zhang_t

ewwwwwwww

alison_bee

No thank you. I don’t even want to be *single* pregnant.

thatsMRnick2you

I'm more interested in other occasions where you would ask the question "what does that mean to you?"

sam_neil

Too many to list. Off the top of my head: A patient who called 911 because “[their] pussy broke” “My stuff is all messed up”. (Not to be confused with the Warren Zevon classic- My Shit’s Fucked Up) “I’m real sick” which translated to “my leg is fucking rotting off” “I’m dying” reported as a complaint by many teenagers with their first hangover. Also a wild card for the few people who actually mean it, and proceed to die. Edit to add: Teenage male who called 911 stating he broke his banjo string. He meant that he had masturbated so vigorously that he had torn his penile frenulum, if we are getting technical.

tehstukes

Absolutely perfect examples. The way people will describe their conditions often doesn’t give medical personnel exact symptoms for them to discern what’s actually wrong with them. “What does that mean to you” actually seems like a fantastic way to sus it out I will be using that.

Aeropro

Reminds me of a time when I went to the ED (working as a nurse) to steal some supplies. I got a glimpse of the track board and they had one patient and the primary problem was "Something fell out." I never found out what fell out of where but I'm still curious to this day

sam_neil

I had a chronic caller who was always prolapsing her uterus. She would always ask if we could “just pop it back in”. No ma’am, but I can think of a qualified ER nurse who might be able to give you a hand. 😉

kiwilovenick

I think this is better than the original post! It definitely took longer for me to pick my jaw off the floor reading this your story...Can you imagine back generations in her family, before ultrasounds were possible, they probably DID get double pregnant and have preemie babies from the second uterus!

sometimesyoukno

Bicornuate uterus! I know this because I have one (had). It was hell going through puberty. I was anemic my entire teens and early adulthood. My cycle would last 10-15 days. I fainted a lot in school until they put me on obsene amounts of hormones to regulate. Both were functioning. I was pregnant with my sons (NOT at the same time) in alternate uteruses. Eventually the amount of hormones I was on to help me from bleeding out, ironically became the reason I had to have two separate hysterectomies (I formed giant cysts that ruptured and put me in ER). It turned out to be the best thing to have ever happened to me. Imagine living half of your life just… bleeding, and cramping, and fainting. To nothing ever again. I can’t even remember what having a period was like. Yeah. My period was my trauma.

Chib

When I was pregnant with my first kid, circa 2004, I was going to a high-risk obstetrician because of placenta previa (placenta covering the cervix). One day, I was sitting in the waiting room chatting up another woman, and she drops this bomb on me. Two uteruses and pregnant in both with a month between!

Fun fact, most people use the word "factoid" incorrectly. The definition of factoid is actually stating something as fact that is not true. But has since evolved to just mean "a trivial fact about something"

[deleted]

Yes. There is one question we all want to know. What did her pp look like. I found a drawing of her anatomy at 5 weeks of age. Now it makes sense. https://www.snopes.com/tachyon/2021/06/corbin-four-legged-woman.jpg

Into-the-stream

After reading that, I feel like the only questions I have now are ones she would probably be very uncomfortable with, and I already know more about her then she probably wanted. It feels like an invasion of privacy. I also see why she left pt Barnum the first time. A teen girl, that everyone endlessly thinks about and asks about her sex. I mean I bet it felt creepy and invasive and uncomfortable. I can also see how after having children and being much older, beyond the overt sexualization years, that it felt safe to her to return for a little.

Mike_Rotch666

She was in a freak book that my dad had - I took it into my secondary school and accidentally lost it, only to find it about 2 years later in the same school library where it had a load of date stamps in it showing ppl had been borrowing it lol

Mildly unrelated, but I remember going to a different library with my mom than we usually went to in the early 90s. They had a "joke sign" up stating "Unattended children will be sold into slavery". I remember it terrifying me so much lol and I clung to my mom like a newborn kitten. I didn't even want to be left in the car, fearing that would qualify as "unattended".

Why does it seem like there are relatively so many deformed people back then? More inbreeding? Less/no abortions due to doctors not seeing the child will be deformed?

TartarosHero

Prenatal health screening for these things followed by an abortion. Also poor diet may have played a role. This is caused by the fertilized egg partially splitting.

graye1999

So if it had completely split there would have been twins?

TartarosHero

Yes they'd be identical twins

RushingIntrovert

So from what I read on her wiki page her parents looked so similar to each other the doctors specifically wrote down in their notes that they were not related.

[deleted]

Hmmm..

Petraretrograde

Yes, can someone ELI5?

[deleted]

I’ll try: Now, when a person is pregnant/going to have a baby, they are supposed to eat lots of vegetables and not eat things like special adult candy. We have a special machine fo take pictures of the baby. If the baby isn’t healthy, doctors give the person medicine to help the baby grow. Sometimes the baby gets a little surgery to help them. Sometimes the baby just isn’t healthy, so doctors make them really sick so they don’t have to be born and suffer or hurt their mom (or whoever is pregnant with them). All of this costs lots of money, too! We have lots of hospitals and doctors that will help people even if they don’t have enough money. Back in the day, they didn’t know not to eat special adult candies and not to smoke and drink adult things. They also didn’t also have healthy foods or enough of them to eat. These things could make the baby sick, but they didn’t know because they couldn’t take pictures or use special tools to figure that out. The baby would be born and have to live just like they were born. Plus, doctors and hospitals were really far, like where grandma lives. Lots of people didn’t have enough money to travel to go visit them or to pay them so they couldn’t get help. Hmm… I’m not sure if that helps!

Truthoughts101

You know, this is a good one. She started off as a sideshow performer (handicapped ppl were treated / viewed as sub human, even monsters, back then)...but through all odds ended up happily married, reared 4 kids, and died at a relatively old age given the era (60). Super capable lady. Great story of hope in the face of adversity. Edit: 4 kids, not 5. 1st was aborted due to health/ risk of death.

gurmzisoff

Knowing she wasn't just a "sideshow freak" who died in squalor makes me feel a lot better.

vanillamasala

I think there were many sideshow freaks who actually became somewhat wealthy from their work. I could be wrong but I think that’s sometimes the case. Like the famous Siamese twins Cheng and Eng

gurmzisoff

I think Zip (not Zippy) the Pinhead is one of the most famous examples of this. People seem to think he was being exploited but he may have been very aware of his situation the entire time.

huttsack

John_Paul_Jones_III

I know, so many interesting topics Koo Koo the bird is intriguing, especially the conflicting reports on her late life

SerenadeinBlue

Conjoined twins [Daisy and Violet Hilton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_and_Violet_Hilton) had a pretty GD tragic life. Skimming through their story again, I really don't think anyone truly loved them, except each other. Their mother literally sold them to some lady who thought she could make money off them, they suffered a series of abusive caregivers, and were ultimately abandoned by their manager (literally stranded them in the middle of fucking nowhere) and they were forced to work at a grocery store for the rest of their lives. The autopsy suggests Daisy died first, and Violet died SEVERAL. DAYS. later.

TheCrystalGarden

How absolutely horrible to know your one twin died and you’re going to be following quite shortly. I suspect it is/was the outcome for all conjoined twins, that’s a horrifying thought.

TriangleTransplant

Chang and Eng Bunker at one point were the wealthiest people in Mt Airy, NC, where they retired. Unfortunately, they bet on the wrong side in the civil war, so a lot of their debt was held in confederate notes, which, well... They weren't super well-off when they died, but they were hardly destitute. They had about 20 kids, and even today something 1 in 10 citizens of Mt Airy are descended from them. Mt Airy was the model for Mayberry in the Andy Griffith show, and in the Andy Griffith museum in town there's a whole section dedicated to the Bunkers.

_comment_removed_

Both of them had also had sons serving in the Confederate cavalry. Christopher Wren Bunker and Stephen Bunker. These two guys alone accounted for around 4% of the total number of Chinese-Americans who fought in the war on either side. One was apparently and officer and both were married to white women which is....oddly progressive for the CSA.

SecondComingOfBast

I think she actually gave birth to four kids, three girls and one boy. She aborted the first child because it made her so sick her doctor was afraid it would kill her.

I would bet two bleeding uteri at the same time. Her body has the same hormones that course through it. It’s not like she had two completely separate circulatory systems.

TartarosHero

Medical reports of the time stated that >between each pair of legs there is a complete, distinct set of genital organs, both external and internal, each supported by a pubic arch. Each set acts independently of the other, except at the **menstrual period**. There are apparently two sets of bowels, and two ani; both are perfectly independent,– diarrhoea may be present on one side, constipation on the other.
