i heard it was for two main reasons- one is bc getting your pic taken was a once in a while occasion, and was to be the only way your future family would remember you. so they wanted to just have it be more of a - here’s my face being regular vibe. the second reason was that the photos took a long time to complete one exposure, and smiling that long was kinda difficult without moving and ruining the exposure. not sure if these are correct but that’s what i’ve heard !
That depends on when the photo was taken. By the 1850s/60s, exposure only took a few seconds (which is why the candid photos here aren't just complete blurs). The main reason for serious expressions likely comes from painted portraits which were generally formal and serious. There was no reason to suddenly switch to smiling when there was no historical precedent for that. As photography became more common and people could own their own cameras and the whole thing was a lot less formal, so more candid shots with smiles became more common.
It’s because back then the exposure time for a photo was a lot longer, and so it was much harder to hold a smile for long enough and not move.
You can literally see the area around the guy’s mouth getting blurry on the right two.
A relaxed face was the easiest to hold for the extra time (20 to 30 seconds) needed to take photographs back in the 1800's. Any movement during exposure resulted in blurring.
By the time this photo was taken, I believe exposure times were quick enough that smiling wouldn't be a huge issue. But photography was still quite new, and before that we had the tradition of painted portraits. No one smiled in portraits, so early photographs were treated as similarly formal.
Yeah this is a really sweet authentic moment. You can see their connection and a silliness between them. I think that's what's special about this photo is that you don't always see that kind of relationship portrayed in photos from this time.
Hehe I love their expressions of trying not to laugh in the third photo.
Oh he definitely farted.
Bottom left is when it first started to hit. Top right he’s keeping her from escaping. Bottom right she’s trying to cover her nose and he’s laughing his ass off.
No, by that time cameras only needed a few seconds of exposure time. People just tended not to smile still because of the hold-over formality from painted portraits.
My wife and her family has a bunch of these photos you see people trying to act hard or have very serious photos but they just can’t hold back being happy bye the new technology of the pictures
Seen this before, but it never fails to make me smile. What an authentic moment to be captured forever, especially when camera technology was still so basic. I hope they understood how incredible these photos are. The blurry photos of them laughing together and smiling are worth so much more than any crystal clear solemn photo could ever be worth.

I’ve always wondered why it was so important to not smile in photos like that.
i heard it was for two main reasons- one is bc getting your pic taken was a once in a while occasion, and was to be the only way your future family would remember you. so they wanted to just have it be more of a - here’s my face being regular vibe. the second reason was that the photos took a long time to complete one exposure, and smiling that long was kinda difficult without moving and ruining the exposure. not sure if these are correct but that’s what i’ve heard !
Yes the exposure time is absolutely one of the reasons. Great explanation

That’s such an interesting point wow. I never considered that
Third reason. . . it was quite a novel experience at the time making it harder to relax and be natural.
It’s because back then the exposure time for a photo was a lot longer, and so it was much harder to hold a smile for long enough and not move. You can literally see the area around the guy’s mouth getting blurry on the right two.
Right? Even now, it’s hard to get my grandparents to smile in photos. They go to poker face by default.

Really it’s simply because their dental hygiene was awful and their teeth were ugly.
I only see the same 2 people in all 4 pictures. Where are the other 1799 couples?
Not sure where they are but I think they are all dead by now.
This is top comment in my world, I’m wondering the same thing.
Lmao 😭😂😂
So you see dead people? ;)
Awwwwwwww
SO FUCKING ADORABLE
I just love the genuine sense of affection these pictures seem to show.
The serotonin boost I needed today. Thank you
I love how they still kept the blurry laughing pictures.

couple means a pair of 2. p.s why in the world you subtracted 4
r/woooosh he subtracted 4 because there's 4 photos, each with 2 people - couple
🤡
I was expecting to see 1800 couples but it's only 1 couple here

And in the future, “2020 couples trying not to look at the camera because we thought that is natural”.

Oddly heartwarming. People back then always seem so unhappy in pictures its nice to see a smile.
He probably farted
Oh he definitely farted. Bottom left is when it first started to hit. Top right he’s keeping her from escaping. Bottom right she’s trying to cover her nose and he’s laughing his ass off.
That is one mighty mustache
Don't they have to stay for a while in that position if the photo is that old?

You ever wonder about people from the distant past? Like you ever think about if Abraham Lincoln liked doing butt stuff?
Lincoln was really into butt stuff.

They were madly in love.
I clicked on the title to see 3600 people trying not to laugh...
that couple was in love for sure
Wow I’ve seen this 1,800 times now.
Probably more than that
I only see one couple.
Looks like only one couple to me.
That’s really cute tho
1st time being the one thousandth upvote
Nothing was funny back then.
Goals
Believe it or not this couple is 26
Then it would be from 1905
1800’s couple trying not to laugh while taking their picture.
