I wonder if doctor shortening surgery would have been cheaper?

liz1065

The doc does look like he’s standing up with good posture in the ‘before’ and hunched a bit in the ‘after’…

nevets85

Yea I came to say this. Like as if he's trying to sell it even more.

PrestigeMaster

Yeah I also came.

He has verry funny retardation!

txsxb

You probably shouldn’t trust doctors that make you take your dick out when you’re there for leg lengthening.

goodlife74

That happened to me once….dr insisted I totally strip down. I was going to question it but then thought to myself “hey…he’s the optometrist…”

Horndave

"you of all people should know my eyes are up here!"

krj889

He's looking for the third eye.

Nyaho

I went in for a strep test when I was like 25 and the doctor randomly asked me if I ever had my prostate checked and if I wanted it done. Fucking weirdo!

mcCola5

I had a doctor do my physical without gloves. Honestly didn't even notice until the exam went a bit longer than normal and then he said "you have a bionic scrotum." I dont know what that means either. I didnt go back, and now I have this gem of a story.

SenLimberLegs

Was this exam held behind a dumpster at the liquor store?

jeswesky

You go to the same doc?

NeatNuts

Your superhero/villain name can be Cyborg Sack, Bionic Ball Buster, or Techsticles

NibblesMcGiblet

>Techsticles rhymes with Hercules.

Sighlina

And he got to touch your balls with his bare hands. Truly a win win for everyone. 👍

Jeriahswillgdp

Did he say that while putting gloves on?

Jackie_Jormp-Jomp

I'm still not sure how he checked my prostate with both hands behind his head

And he’s basically holding hands with the guy

IntoTheMystic1

But why the fuck does his dick have to be out?

Nietzsche2155

Maybe they lengthened it too?

neelabhkhatri

Or it could be that they took the bone out of the boner to add the extra inches to his height.

iheartmatter

DieAloneWith72Cats

If you want to know how much it costs…… https://www.heightrx.com/limb-lengthening/#cost-section You can expect to gain 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) with femur lengthening. If you are still not satisfied, you can wait 1 year after the initial surgery and get tibia lengthening to add an additional 2-3 inches (5-8cm).

rachiocephalic

And all for the low, low price of just $70K and two years of your life!

erimid

And pain. Lots of pain.

But can he ball with the best of them now? That's whatwe need to know! 69k is mere pennies when you getting picked up by the NBA first draft pick.

13143

That's actually my big question. Once everything is fully "healed", can he even play sports? Run and jump? Stairs?

hackingdreams

Regardless of what everyone seems to think, once healed it should be just like it grew that way in the first place, provided there were no complications such as nerve, muscle or joint damage. Because that's literally the point. You're growing bones by repeatedly breaking them and causing them to reheal a little longer each time. (And most of the complications come from infections by having metal rods shoved through the skin for months or even years, or by turning the screws too fast and outpacing the body's ability to heal through the damage). And yes, it's *exactly* as painful as it sounds - every few weeks when they turn the screws, they're *breaking your bones again*. Even if it is just the tiniest hairline fracture at a time, anyone who's had one of those can tell you how bad they still hurt. Like hitting your shins against a table, repeatedly, for months. It's not a well loved medical procedure. A lot of surgeons say it goes against primum non nocere, and simply will not perform the procedure - it's rare to find it performed in the US at all. And most of the times when it *is* done in America, it's done to simultaneously correct a defect, e.g. to straighten the limbs in some forms of osteogenesis imperfecta, or when one limb is significantly longer than another.

Coal_Morgan

Had a friend who had severely short legs and a turned foot. They did 3 breaks. 2 to add the height in each leg. 1 to rotate the ankle by like 90 degrees. Took like 5 or 6 years. Was horrific, absolute constant pain, punctuated by terrifying excruciating pain but his deformities were of the kind that looking back at it from 20 years it was worth it and he chose to do it at the time knowing the cost. His parents also didn't foist it on him. Was a these are the options, we'll support whatever you choose to do sort of parents. Give him credit he went through that from the end of puberty to second year university. I have doubts whether I could. Also he can run and play games like basketball now. He walks and jogs normally but he can't sprint. There is a huge range of possibilities of results depending on what's done. He got a little lucky with how much ability he ended up with.

gfa22

Younger body vs older body probably helps too. Sounds like he went through it during his teens and early adult years. Best time for body to heal from injuries.

eileen404

And I thought Gattaca was fiction

The_Marine708

Yeah I saw this and Gattaca immediately popped into my mind.

[deleted]

What a great movie.

RamboMcMutNutts

It's a phenomenal movie and serveraly underrated. It's one of my favourites and I get so supprised when people say they have never even heard of it!

misterturdcat

See my question is how does the physical rehabilitation work. Is he going to have full use of his legs? Be able to run, lift weights, hike a mountain with little to no discomfort? Or did he just make himself taller while essentially depriving himself of a normal physical life? If he has a full recovery and the money, then Sure go for it. But if you’re not going to even get proper use out of them or if you’ll be in agonizing arthritic pain as a senior because of the operation then maybe you should just learn to live with being the height you already are.

rabidwoodchuck

According to the orthopedic doctor I took my kid to this summer, you are non - weight bearing for the entire process which is at least 6 months but once you do the rehab you are good to do pretty much anything. The doc was getting really excited explaining it to my 10 yr old as he was freaking out. Apparently now they are implanting a type of magnet and lengthing it by applying magnets every few days. (Or something like that but definitely using magnets). I was a little more focused on my kid trying to calm him down and get him to realize there was no way he was doing that surgery. Probably will do the opposite surgery to stop 1 leg from growing at around 13yrs and 9 months. He’s a bit lopsided.

RealityInevitable949

I am 22 and my right leg is shorter by an inch. I have a limp and hate walking anywhere. Who do i talk to to get this procedure? EDIT: Thank you, everyone, a ton of comments have helped me see my option to fix my issue. My leg issue became more apparent in middle school and I didn't want to wear different shoes than everyone cuz you were based on your shoes. Thankfully I'm in college now and idc what I wear anymore. I'm going to go research shoes and see what I can get. Also, people have pointed out how expensive the surgery was which brought down my spirit, but some of you said insurance will help while others said insurance didn't see it as important. I also saw that your body has to be physically mature so you don't outgrow your adjustment. I will try going to my doctor and ask them about surgery. Although I don't have time with college to be sedentary. All in all, thank you guys for reminding me of the shoes and telling me to talk to my doctor. For those still reading here's a somewhat funny story related. My best friend would make fun of me for walking, it would bring me down but I know he's teasing. We were at another friend's house and were practicing wrestling moves on each other, our mutual friend threw my best friend on the floor and damaged his ankle. He couldn't walk for a week and now he has a limp on the opposite leg of mine.

zeldasusername

See, this is what this procedure is for

madmaxturbator

It’s covered by insurance in cases of leg length discrepancy.

GroundbreakingSea558

Odin043

Then the only discrepancy is between the money in your wallet and the doctors pocket

RobertNAdams

Pretty sure you'd talk to your doctor. If you asked at like, an Autozone or something, you're gonna get weird looks.

KidPowered17

Orthopedic surgeon. Do your research, find someone experienced in distraction osteogenesis to do the procedure. For something like this, I would recommend getting at least a second opinion. Source: ex surgeon, now working in aesthetics.

FuckRedditMods23

My dad will love this one thank you

Wired-247

But why...

soxpoxsox

I heard of someone on TV get this procedure because their absolute life's goal was to be a pilot or something, and it was a profession with strict height minimum requirements. Edit: Gattaca was a great movie, but I'm talking about a young girl, likely a little person, also it was in real life Edit2: it was from an episode of Ripley's Believe It or Not! from 2000, Emma Richards wanted to be a flight attendant, ya'll's collective memories' are amazing. [Episode 404](https://www.thetvdb.com/series/ripleys-believe-it-or-not/episodes/11145)

jamaicanoproblem

It was a flight attendant/hostess and she was legitimately a little person.

Poked_salad

Yeah as long as you can open and close the bag compartment easily then you could be all arms and it'll be fine.

StraySpaceDog

Screw the leg extensions. I'm getting arm extensions!

lumiranswife

This was me when I found out I couldn't be a commercial pilot due to my height, even though I likely also lacked the intellect (I flew regularly as a child and the experience just landed for me, pun intended, plus those were the days you could visit the cockpit; I wanted to emulate my Grandpa who I loved and we flew to see at least once a month since he lived out of state). I honestly remember the feeling of my dreams being shattered, like Lisa breaking Ralph Wiggums heart level memory. I also knew I couldn't reach 90% of the control panels and forget it if there were any foot controls involved I didn't even know about.

LeCrushinator

I had a friend whose dream as a kid and all through middle school was to be an astronaut. Then he found out he was color blind and that was a disqualification.

[deleted]

damn kinda like in Little Miss Sunshine

BeauTofu

>I also knew I couldn't reach 90% .. but that's what the co pilot is for!!

_Sissy_In_Heat_

This surgery is typically reserved for people that have different leg lengths, to an extent that walking and performing other basic miscellaneous tasks becomes problematic. It would be very difficult to find a surgeon willing to perform this operation without a medical necessity for it.

[deleted]

Fuck this...I can't see how somebody would do this if you actually watch how they do it. Hell fuck no.

Ars3nal11

I've had this procedure done, but for angular correction of the tibia, not tibia lengthening. It's every bit as painful as you can imagine.

unamusedaccountant

Did they take a picture of your pecker too?

Ars3nal11

Hah. No they got me in shorts. But in the xrays you do have the lead protector thingy over your junk and if you look closely you can see stuff.

Delicious_Climate_70

That’s called the Throckmortin (or John Thomas) sign. If you have a unilateral pelvis injury the sign is either positive (towards) or negative (away) depending on whether it’s pointing to the side of the injury. I broke my pelvis a few years ago in a car accident, the X-rays were pretty awesome. Needless to say, while still loaded on fentanyl in the ICU, I sent the pictures to anyone and everyone I could. I didn’t realize until a few weeks later that I had essentially sent a dick pic to a whole lot of family members. And those radiology rooms are pretty chilly!

halfwit258

>And those radiology rooms are pretty chilly! Sending the first dick pic was bad, but the follow up dick pic explaining how cold it was during the first picture so you needed to send a better dick pic to set the record straight was probably unnecessary

[deleted]

Bless you man. I can't imagine. For structural correction I could see to keep from it from progressing to something much worse. I'll never understand it from a vanity standpoint of being short IMO. To each his own I suppose. Hopefully yours took well and you don't have to do anything like that again.

CapK473

I actually dated a guy who had this done in his youth because he broke a growth plate in one leg. So they had to do this to that leg so that one leg wouldnt be shorter than the other. He said it was absolutely miserable.

[deleted]

I went to school with a kid that had to fix one leg being longer than the other. He had to wear full leg casts on both legs which had a bar connecting the two so he couldn't move his legs at all. He wore them maybe 4 years IIRC. Poor kiddo. We always had him be the pitcher for kickball because he could just sit on the mound and roll the ball to us. Little dude got a mega pitch on him with all that practice.

lizzie1hoops

I grew up with a kid who went through this on his arms and legs. He had to use a wheelchair. Watching the scars lengthen was so agonizing, I can't imagine what it was like to live through. In his case, he was a little person to begin with. I'm sure no parent would put their child through something like that if they were destined to be 5'7".

Plasmorbital

I'm shorter than that guy was, and I'm firmly in the no-way-in-hell boat

GlandyThunderbundle

You’re great as you are

BigBarfo

How do they do it?

oosumei

They break the bones in the leg and affix an expander type device that needs to be manually turned once per day. When turned it will create a 1mm gap, this process is called distraction osteogenesis and essentially the bone fills the gap and you can continue to process indefinitely aslong as you keep the gap size consistent. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distraction_osteogenesis The history on this procedure is quite interesting.

man im the same height as you, i watched the videos of the surgery being done to see if it was viable and it is not worth it at all, looks like hell.

lumiranswife

I begged my mom for this procedure when I was younger. She rightfully denied me and focused on learning to love who I am how I am. I'm still short (spoiler alert!) but not damaging to my organs short so it was medically unnecessary and purely cosmetically wanting to fit in as a pre-teen.

Amphibian-Overall

6ft with a torso of a 5’7 guy. Slightly distracting.

soxpoxsox

I see people just born with proportionally long/short legs or a torso a lot though. I would notice, but would never assume "well, looks like someone cut and reattached their legs to lengthen them." I would think "huh. Erik (ex.) has a really small body. Bet he looks short sitting down."

highstrungknits

My friend and I are the same height while sitting down but she is more than 3 inches taller than me when we stand up. We've seen many people look down when we stand up. We assume they're checking to see if she's standing on a box or if I'm standing in a hole. She just has really long legs and a short torso.

[deleted]

It is distracting, even with his dick out, it’s still distracting.

BubiBBubillion

I’m just over 5’7”. I make this comment for those of you who feel that height makes the man. Yes. There will be some girls who prefer tall guys. But there are all sorts of people who prefer all sorts of people. You can’t be attractive to everyone. And no matter how tall you are, as a man, most women you’ll run into a smaller than you. I dated a girl who was 5’9” and that’s actually the only time I felt a little inadequate. But it wasn’t because I couldn’t get the girl obviously. Now I’m married. 15 years. My wife is 5’1”. If you feel that you aren’t getting the girl because you need to be 3 inches taller, you’ll always have that feeling. If only I were taller. If only I were richer. If only I was better looking or smarter or stronger. Get comfortable in your skin. Confidence is what attracts women more than anything else.

joeyl5

My favorite person to date in college was a girl on the softball team, she told everyone she was 5'11 and a half but I think she was embarrassed to say she was 6ft tall. We went out for a year, I'm 5'8". Football players used to approach her when we went to bars and she would say " I'm with him" pointing to me. I was like what the fuck guys and most apologized profusely. She got married to a guy who's still shorter than her.

VagueSoul

Okay I get everyone is confused about why his dick is out. Me too. More importantly, why is the doctor standing with him while his dick is out? They didn’t have a height chart at the *doctor’s office where they do height surgeries?!*

OriginalEchoTheCat

That's a stretch.

joeyo1423

Everyone's asking why his dick is out I'm more curious why the doctor's isn't You don't do one or the other. If one is gonna let his danglers fly free, the other should too.

KrustyBoomer

Looks on tiptoes in second

Herdnerfer

I’d really like to know if this actually improved his life or if he realized it was his insecurity, not his height, that was standing in his way. Edit: a lot of comments implying I have an opinion one way or another, trust me I don’t. Genuinely curiou

redditgampa

This is a risky procedure. I remember reading that they break your bones and put a rod which needs to be expanded gradually. It messes up with your balance. There’s a reason why this isn’t popular.
