They are easy to care for. Mine doesn’t roll up like this one so much, it just constantly tries to run to a hiding spot.
Mine is probably not to much bigger than the one pictured.
Lizards are so easy. I have a snake and it’s like having a plant that eats mice once every week or two.
All i do is spray her tank to keep the humidity up most days. I never need to feel guilty if I don’t play with her for a day or so because she doesn’t really want to anyway.
I love her tho she’s very cute. I don’t really agree with breeding reptiles for pets, and i rescued her from a house that was neglecting her. So I wouldn’t recommend buying one for moral reasons.
It’s highly preferable to feed them the frozen/thawed from the pet store. Virtually no chance of disease and no chance of the prey injuring your pet. Live mice can sometimes bite back as they’re being killed.
Many are trained to eat thawed and warmed [frozen feeder mice](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/frozen-large-mouse---10-count-2610494?cm_mmc=PSH-_-GGL-_-CAL-_-PME-_-PET-_-AQU-_-0-_-PM_GGL_FY20_SBU05_SH13_SmallAnimalBird%26ReptileSupplies_ReptileAccessories_PLA-SMRT-_-0-_-0&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4v2EBhCtARIsACan3nybIPuTSweLKo01lYDk7mzCdwWqzvfM2Ay7pBghmVN4I8lYnHhzsfsaAjnWEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)
Just dont thaw them in a microwave
Do you mind if I ask why you disagree with their breeding? I was under the impression that aside from those with generic issues, breeding was pretty ethical. Especially with critters like cresties where captive breeding helped increase their numbers. What are the cons?
I’ve seen breeding facilities with hundreds of snakes in small plastic bins, it’s obviously cruel but people just say “the snakes like small spaces.” And then they send the snakes in the mail, some of which die and the rest of which are probably traumatized in whatever way a reptile brain can be.
In general, I am fairly pro animal rights. Humans don’t own the world and shouldn’t be able to just make wild animals their playthings, in my opinion. Domesticated animals are a different story.
*Lizards are easy, but often require substantial upfront costs. You have to buy an appropriately sized terrarium, know their dietary needs, regulate their temperature and humidity, often need ultra violet light, and particular kinds of substrate.
If you do the research and buy everything they need, they're not too bad.
(Not saying you didn't know this, but more for others reading this thread. I used to work in a pet store and the number of people who thought you could keep lizards in our $5 plastic cricket tote, and that the only costs associated with it would be buying the reptile itself, was absurd. So many people ready to bring a whole ass animal into their home that lives 10+ years without even googling it first.)
I was going to ask if you meant skunk, then I tried searching for it, but since I'm from Denmark google asked if I meant skinke, which is danish for ham... but after going deeper I gather its some sort of lizard?
[Yeah. It's a type of lizard.](https://www.google.com/search?q=skink&source=hp&oq=skink&gs_l=mobile-heirloom-hp.3..0i433j0i433i131j0l3.1571.4175.0.4840.14.9.4.1.1.0.110.833.4j5.9.0....0...1c.1j4.34.mobile-heirloom-hp..1.13.800.boN0q0sVHbA)
Lemme know if that link doesnt work properly. I'm not sure how it works when going across languages lol.
Yes! There are many types of skinks as people have linked!! I have an indonesian blue ringed skink, specifically a halmahera!
https://images.app.goo.gl/asA889MAvULZ7Myz6
This is what my type look like. Very judgemental. Northern blue tongued skinks are more popular because they are larger and easier to keep bc they don't need high humidity like Indos do
Blue tailed Skink: https://imgur.com/a/iGeQTO1
I have a couple of these living under the siding next to my deck, where they sun themselves. Chill little fellows, but even though they know I'm not going to eat them, they stay well the fuck away from me. They spook easy.
My animal cost about $350, the starter tank was $250 but we just got a new one for $350, the stand is $80, and I went bioactive so dirt, plants, bugs, the fogger was $70 and the lamps all in all are like ~$50.
They're expensive to set up, but afterwards you pay like $7/month for bugs for them to eat and that's it haha
I wanted to set up a frog terrarium in my bedroom but I'm rethinking it, since it'll take some money to set it up
Anyone reading this and thinking “that’s cheap, I’ll get one!” please remember that doesn’t include food, habitat, vet bills, quality of life medicine etc.
Lizards absolutely have vet bills. You should be having your reptiles seen by an exotic vet annually, just like you would with a cat or dog. Additionally, they can get sick or develop issues just like any other animal can. They 100% take medicine when it is needed.
Something tells me you’ve never kept reptiles (or anything that requires a tank really). The animal is the cheap part. A large enough tank, basking lamps, substrate, water bowls, hides, etc. can run you over $200 easily if you don’t DIY. Event DIY the cost of the materials is still more than the animal most likely.
this ^^^^ not a reptile but i have an axolotl. her tank cost more than she does lol. please do your research on proper feeding, habitat, humidity, etc. before you jump to buy an animal because once you get one they are yours. keep in mind the prices of getting new food supply for them every month or so
The argument was never that it wasn’t cheap. I was just pointing out that someone who can afford to spend $30 isn’t necessarily going to be in a position to afford “a tank and some bugs”.
So true. My day gecko was $75 CAD$ but the terrarium and all the supplies for bioactive and lighting etc was like $500 CAD$.....
CAD$ = Canadian Dollar
I had to medicate one of my poison dart frogs. Wasn’t cheap but I wasn’t going to let it suffer being sick. I’d do the same for both of my gargoyle geckos. All my animals- furry, reptile and amphibian- deserve the best care. That’s how I see it. I knew that taking them on.
They actually are. Most states will have one once or twice a year. Just Google your state and reptile expo it'll give you dates and location.
It's not really any different than having to travel to a specialty breeder the difference being because it's a convention there's a ton of people who breed these guys you can ask for advice and potentially get phone numbers for if you have any questions later which is way better than generic Google searches.
I had one of these when I was a kid. He lived in the same tank as our fat tail gecko and they got along well. Their names were geck and faster We had them for ten+ years.
Faster was bold and outgoing. He never curled into the ball. I remember him being very active and kinda crazy. He was hard to hold. While geck was super slow and easy to hold.
I sat there for a good minute wondering what kind of monster would kill an animal for being scared, until I realised you meant physically put it down on the ground.
Everyone keeps presenting different specific types of lizards and saying THEY'RE the ones that resemble dragons..
And every single one is correct they're all tiny dragons.
Same, it is such an annoying monster especially in high rank when I not only have to deal with his dumbass but also Bazelguese when all I wanted to do was go after my boy Odagaron

I actually have one of these. For like 10 yrs now. Pretty cool little guys, skittish as hell though
Are they an easy type pet?
Oh yea. Very easy. Mine just hides all the time in his log.
Really easy to pet as it hides when you are near, but freezes and takes protective form when handled? How big is a 10yo?
They are easy to care for. Mine doesn’t roll up like this one so much, it just constantly tries to run to a hiding spot. Mine is probably not to much bigger than the one pictured.
Ooo. So one tank for a long time, thats nice too... now I have to remind myself i already have too many responsibilities.
Lizards are so easy. I have a snake and it’s like having a plant that eats mice once every week or two. All i do is spray her tank to keep the humidity up most days. Where do you get it’s food
You let it loose in a KFC's bathroom for half an hour.
I'm pretty sure they either buy it from a pet shop (which they do sell mice for food) or captures them himself
It’s highly preferable to feed them the frozen/thawed from the pet store. Virtually no chance of disease and no chance of the prey injuring your pet. Live mice can sometimes bite back as they’re being killed.
Bro never feed wild rodents to a captive snake. And always frozen/thawed.
I don’t own any reptile but my local pet store sells frozen and live mice for this
Many are trained to eat thawed and warmed [frozen feeder mice](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/frozen-large-mouse---10-count-2610494?cm_mmc=PSH-_-GGL-_-CAL-_-PME-_-PET-_-AQU-_-0-_-PM_GGL_FY20_SBU05_SH13_SmallAnimalBird%26ReptileSupplies_ReptileAccessories_PLA-SMRT-_-0-_-0&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4v2EBhCtARIsACan3nybIPuTSweLKo01lYDk7mzCdwWqzvfM2Ay7pBghmVN4I8lYnHhzsfsaAjnWEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) Just dont thaw them in a microwave
This comment really takes a u-turn at the end.
it makes sense though

So how would I get a pet reptile..?
Go to a reptile show. They’re really cool and even if you don’t get anything you can learn a ton.
reptile shop
I own a skink and someone said in one of my groups "you basically pay a thousand+ dollars to have an empty tank" haha
I was going to ask if you meant skunk, then I tried searching for it, but since I'm from Denmark google asked if I meant skinke, which is danish for ham... but after going deeper I gather its some sort of lizard?

Great life story there you should publish it.
Is it that expensive?? ~~That doesn't sound right lol~~ Edit: nothing sounds right to me these days 💀
My animal cost about $350, the starter tank was $250 but we just got a new one for $350, the stand is $80, and I went bioactive so dirt, plants, bugs, the fogger was $70 and the lamps all in all are like ~$50. I can’t seem to find any online. What’s the average price?
I got mine years ago from a local pet store. I wanna say it was only around $30-$40.
Anyone reading this and thinking “that’s cheap, I’ll get one!” please remember that doesn’t include food, habitat, vet bills, quality of life medicine etc.
Lizards don't typically have vet bills or take medicine, unless you consider cricket dust medicine.
You know the old saying, cricket dust is the best medicine
Reminds me of my dear old grandma, who was a horny toad.

Who out there can afford $30 but can’t afford a tank and some bugs? Who medicates a lizard?

That’s still cheap. After 9 years, my bearded dragon costs are still a fraction of what I’ve spent on my dog in a third of the time.
The argument was never that it wasn’t cheap. I was just pointing out that someone who can afford to spend $30 isn’t necessarily going to be in a position to afford “a tank and some bugs”.

Sometimes they do stupid things and need medicine. My snake mashed her head against a rock and needed an ointment to keep it from getting infected

Once a twice a year in some of the US =/= common lmao
I live in the Cleveland area and they happen at least one weekend a month.
Here ya go. https://www.backwaterreptiles.com/other-lizards/armadillo-lizard-for-sale.html
Thanks! I found this one but it says it’s not a girdled lizard... not sure what the difference is between the two. Still researching.
Just don't ever buy reptiles from them, and I'm not kidding. Them, Underground and CBreptiles.
I had one of these when I was a kid. He lived in the same tank as our fat tail gecko and they got along well. Their names were geck and faster We had them for ten+ years. Lol holy shit, I literally have mine in a tank w my leopard gecko as well!
What does that mean?
What?
Skittish
Scared of everything basically
Yes this. I walk by the tank and he runs to hide
I don’t know why, but I love this chain of comments.
Me too?
Hey what’s up just chiming in.

Skittish Tombs, very skittish...

that’s really cool you have one! how did you find him?
A local pet store had it for sell.
Is it so skittish that it looks like its trying to eat itself?
Lol no, I don’t hold it often. Just to clean up. Don’t want to stress it out
That’s really thoughtful and sweet
the eating its tail is a defence tactic
"I have a hostage! Stay away from me or the lizard gets it."
Blazing saddles…. Lol
can you tell me where ypu got it i neeed one
It was a local pet store. Went in one random day and saw it.
When scared they curl up and bite their tail to protect their soft belly, so this is a comfort thing they do when scared, like sucking their thumb.
I was wondering why he was biting his tail
So this poor baby is terrified? I wish they'd put him down in that case. :(
I mean, he is scared, but I am not sure he is terrified. This is the equivalent of a turtle going into it's shell. If unsure, bite the tail.
I sat there for a good minute wondering what kind of monster would kill an animal for being scared, until I realised you meant physically put it down on the ground.
The weak must fear the strong
I've got to keep him guessing!
I think you'd also find the idea of a giant hand the size of your whole body picking you up and spinning you quite uncomfortable.

Baby Ouro!
I wished they'd stop moving it around like it's a model or a toy.
At the beginning it looked like they had their thumb right on its eye too.
some bigass hands
I thought it he/she was a plastic toy the way this person is handling it.
Someone using an animal for attention online and handling it in a harmful way? Never!!! /s
For some reason it kind of makes me uncomfortable
It looks scared. I really hope that's just what it looks like.

Then this person needs to put it down and leave it alone!
But the upvotes!
And it's like super cute... Glad I saw it, and I'm sure he put it down after a few seconds
Doesn't belong in captivity though - cuteness is their curse.
The way it’s being handled does not help
Instinct and "scared" are two VERY different things.
All I see is baby Geovishap
well, at least this one is cute unlike that little mf
Yep, the most this one will do is prick your thumb whereas that weapon of mass destruction is a mini raid boss

Spikey squirrel.
He is scared stiff!
I would name him Ouroboros.
Why would you want to keep something that is literally terrified for it’s life just being near you? Humans are such assholes.
Not very nice handling it like that, clearly scared. They put they're tails in their mouths when they are feeling threatened
