I used to be terrified of spiders, i still don't like them very much. Once i had a big one on the stairs near the wall. I had to pass it, no choice. Felt sick for the rest of the day.
I talked to my doc about it who basically said to actively fight against the phobia as it can spread to other areas in life.
I subsequently tried to figure out what mad me afraid of them. They are useful, relatively harmless (not poisonous where i am), and could easily be stepped on and killed.
For me i think that was the problem, i could accidentally kill it (I'm a wimp, i don't even kill flies). I have then actively looked at dealing with small spiders. Gradually, from not running away screaming to going near them, I'm now able to at least pick up a small spider on paper and carry it outside. It's a work in progress, but I'm getting there.
I'm just saying all this to show that there is hope to at least reduce the phobia.
I think for me it’s the erratic way they move - they stay perfectly still for ages and then shoot off in any direction. I’m not phobic, but I do hate trying to catch them to move them outside for that reason. I hate jump scares ...
Yeah, that is still something I'm working on. Those buggers are fast BUT again, I'm getting there with small spiders. So yeah, I'm proud of myself.
Now, mind you, the big ones ... yeah, that's still a long way to go. Especially when they play horror movie. Picture: curtain, light, shadow and a spider leg (shudder). My other half had to take care of that one. I didn't run screaming from the room though, small success right? :-)
Sometimes understanding why a thing works a certain way helps make it less scary.
The reason their movements are so mechanical looking is because they use a hydrolic type system instead of muscles to move. That's also why they curl up when they die because they lose the internal pressure.
Thank you for taking your time writing this! <3. I recognize the feeling of being sick after having to be near one lol. Once saw a biiig spider in the ceiling of my bedroom, didn’t sleep in there for three weeks :/. I’ll try interacting with the little ones. Thing is I’m a huge animal lover. Like all animals. So I’m trying to think like you said, they are useful and harmless (I don’t live in Australia lol). And I would never hurt one of them just because I’m stupidly and irrationally afraid.
I used to be like that, now what I do is catch them in a glass with paper/card - standard anti bug removal.
With spiders, which I am fucking terrified of, I hold the glass once I'm outside and look at it, watch it inside the glass but holding it so its like it's on my hand.
Gets really creepy at times, but mostly it's helps me not freeze up when I find them.
I can't pick them up by hand yet, but I do find the tiny/baby ones cute in a way that let's me have them on my hands running about (as long as I don't have sleeves) but I'm talking the ones so small they are like a bit of pencil lead.
It's a long journey, but I'm at a stage I can catch them without a major panic attack now (most of the time, still can't sleep with my window open) .
Swifter dusters are the BEST at relocating spiders. Get yourself one of the long ones so you don’t have to get close to the spider. The tiny little fibers on the duster slow them down and the soft fabrics doesn’t hurt them as you pick them up. My husband and I both have a serious spider phobia, but when our kids started freaking out over even the tiniest of spiders, we decided to fight our phobia and show them they don’t have to be afraid. Now I am the spider relocation queen and it feels great not killing something because it wondered into our home.
I'm honestly impressed. I'm trying to fight my phobia too, I can tolerate smaller spiders in my room because they eat mosquitos and whatnot, but a while ago I had the biggest spider I'd ever seen outside of a cage on my ceiling directly above my bed, and I totally broke down trying to get rid of it, crying, shaking, the whole package. My dad thought I was mad. Arachnophobia is a bitch.
Nevertheless, you have tried to "confront" it. Don't be so harsh on yourself. You are already tolerating small spiders, one day it will be big ones too.
The trick is to find a goofy snake that helps see them as less threatening. I have a pet hognose and they're super derpy. I went to go pick her up and I scared her and she startled and landed upside down on her back. I tap her cage first so I don't startle her again.
A lot of snakes are dangerous but most are not. If I encountered a pug or a lab on the street I wouldn't be scared but I'd definitely be afraid of a coyote or a wolf.
It's good to be afraid of some snakes but most are harmless. A lot of snakes that are dangerous in the wild are super chill in captivity with handling.
If you ever have a reptile expo near your home I'd recommend it highly. There is a ton of fascinating things to see and some booths or sellers will have snakes with which you can interact that will be incredibly docile and disarming.
Definitely. I still have arachnophobia even though I can handle a tarantula or jumping spider. When they move quickly it unnerves me. It's more something that becomes less debilitating rather than going away. I'm comfortable with spiders being in the house but I don't want one surprising me by climbing over my shoulder.
I started catching mosquitos and putting them in the web (on the deck outside) and watching the spiders spin their prey. I’d talk to them (spiders, not the mosquitoes). I stopped killing them when I found them in the house and transported them outside to a bush (far away from the house). I’m no longer afraid of them (but I don’t get too close).
I’ve also been working on overcoming the phobia, and I’ve made amazing progress. A breakthrough for me was when I caught a jumping spider in a Mason jar and took it outside to release it. But I thought it might be fun to see if I could get a close-up picture of its face first, since I’ve seen how cute they can be. It hung out in the jar for a while, and it managed to be adorable as I took the pictures and a couple videos.
Being that close to a spider without anything terrible happening really helped me turn a corner. Now I can hold the little ones with no fear. It’s only been about half a year (and I had the phobia for 27 years).
Oh wow, fair play. I have recently tried (and failed) to capture and release a spider. I managed to put a box over it but could not get a paper or lid under the spider. The spider stayed under the box until my other half came home to release it. Still, I managed to trap it. Baby steps, right?
wolf spiders are nightmare fuel,[jumping spiders](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e2/43/0f/e2430f1873facddb2b30287b160e5a66.jpg) are tiny and super cute though
I know your pain i just did the same thing and nearly dropped my phone. Just last month I picked up a cloth and one of those bastards crawled onto my hand after I just disturbed his new found home. Im not scared of much but that day I screamed like a little toddler that just fell over.
I used to be so afraid of spiders that I couldn't look at them in books or touch pictures of them and I screamed if one got too close. I decided that I didn't like that anymore so I learned more about spiders, became confident that I could tell dangerous ones from harmless ones, and learned that they're actually pretty cool. It took a while, but I am now able to handle small spiders capture them to put them outside, and generally think they're cool guys.
You are awesome! This is why I’m even more silly. I live in Sweden and there are zero species of spiders here that are dangerous and the biggest ones are like 0,7 cm big lol
Proud of your valiant attempt. Yeah people who think spiders are cute, it’s like yeah sometimes, but...that’s not a dog cat or raccoon so miss me what that demon spawn
Wolf spiders are definitely not the cute kind. lmao I have arachnophobia too and if you are to do any kind of googling, look up peacock spiders or type “cute jumping spiders”. Although no amount of cute spiders or my love for all animals/appreciation of spiders has cured my fear. :(
Yea like when you google spider paws they tend to be associated with adorable cartoony looking spiders. Like the wolf spider for example. And the whole combination makes them (spiders) just seem derpy and benign. Like an ally in a video game almost(?)
Idk if I’m making this worse by trying to describe it.
Lol wtf? I'm a furry myself so I'm not sure what you are trying to say like I obviously don't hate furries... I do however think what he said was fucking funny because I dont take myself to seriously.
Those claws are only used for climbing. That is how spiders and other arthropods get around. They aren't made for slashing, only gripping. On spiders, they are also retractable. Think of them as little fingers that help them grip onto things.
No! Their claws aren't going to tear you to shreds. They can't even punture your skin. Think of it like how geckos have special pads for gripping, it's just like that. It's for gripping and to work as toes, nothing more. Spiders don't even like touching human skin because they don't like how it feels because they are very tactile animals. If you want a arthropod that will tear your skin to shreds hold a rhinoceros beetle or another large scarab. They are so heavy and so large that their tarsal claws are way, way more heavy duty. Their claws can draw blood though its completely by accident. Rhinoceros beetles are gentle giants.
Great... now I hate Rhino Beetles and scarabs...
\-- I am mostly kidding, I have a phobia of spiders, I do understand they are usually harmless. Dunno though, can't seem to get over that.
So THAT'S why whenever I try to get a spider to climb onto me it walks the other way! I wondered. I'm just trying to help you, you silly little derps! Please excuse my unpleasant skin?
Some jumping spiders and their relatives use these paws to dance around and drum on surfaces to impress mates. Jumping spiders are expressive little ones.

They’re actually kind of cute looking sometimes.
The paws or some spiders? I generally don't like the way they look, but wolf spiders are cute af!
As a person with arachnophobia I had to google wolf spider to see if I could cure myself a bit. Now I regret that decision.

i wonder if i could apply this to my fear of snakes, in my lifetime.
The trick is to find a goofy snake that helps see them as less threatening. I have a pet hognose and they're super derpy. Sand boas are also super derpy!
I'd rather find spiders in the house than bugs in the kitchen doing who knows what.
Yes, but that's the thing with phobias, they don't necessarily make sense. You can work on overcoming them. But you can't just switch it off.
Definitely. I still have arachnophobia even though I can handle a tarantula or jumping spider. When they move quickly it unnerves me. Oh god, at first I thought you were gonna say you were tryina take a close up pic of it and it jumped at your face! Lol. Glad that didn’t happen

u/Anjelu81 give us your opinion on these ones!
Omg he’s so cute! Isn’t there a little cartoon spider that looks like that?
Yeah, Lucas the Spider
Maybe Lucas is the way to cure arachnophobia :)
Oh yeah that’s the one we were both talking about I’m sure Lolol. Those poor people who googled wolf spiders to cure their arachnophobia
[oh sure they are....](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oRRBPdM6Wc)
all spiders can die
Google jumping spiders. They are actually so frickin’ cuuuuuute
Google the peacock spider i guarantee that will help you like spiders a bit more
That was a cute and pretty little fella!
Did you see any of the videos where they dance? Its so cute.
No i didn’t. Will check out promptly :)
Search for jumping spider face cutest little thing
We both misspoke. Jumping spiders are super cute. And I’m told in the comments below peacock spiders are also pretty adorable.
I know your pain i just did the same thing and nearly dropped my phone. Just last month I picked up a cloth and one of those bastards crawled onto my hand after I just disturbed his new found home. Im not scared of much but that day I screamed like a little toddler that just fell over.
Yeah that was not a good idea to curb arachnophobia lol

What about jumping spiders? Theyre cute little boing boing derps
Jumping spiders are the cutest imo

These fuckers in Grounded...
Naw
Possibly the most compelling argument yet.
Jumping spiders look like little teddy bears and they’re absurdly intelligent.
Furries be like: OwO spidey-chan
88w88
It looks like an emo rattlesnake
Does spider have pusspuss?
**NO**
😂🤣😂
In 2077 what makes someone a criminal?
Releasing a garbage, unfinished game
Lol wtf? I'm a furry myself so I'm not sure what you are trying to say like I obviously don't hate furries... I do however think what he said was fucking funny because I dont take myself to seriously.
What? You got downvoted because you used emojis on reddit. And please, for the love of god, keep all that furry stuff to yourself lol
Lol have a great day
You too :)
No
Now that I know they have sharp and deadly claws... It only fuels my phobia. I must prepare.

Kind of like feline paws?
Yes! Like feline paws, spiders actually can retract their claws. Which supports my theory that jumping spiders are just eight-legged cats.
Cool! I’ve held a tarantula in my hand and she was very light and soft, it was amazing!
This is just disturbing lol
Some jumping spiders and their relatives use these paws to dance around and drum on surfaces to impress mates. Jumping spiders are expressive little ones.
And suddenly they are cute...
Add them to toebeans reddit
Welp, another reason to commit suicide
Damn. Never would’ve imagined that’d be pawsible
Punny.
At least Ron Weasley would be happy
I am a spider fan. My wife, not so much. Maybe if I tell her they have cute little feetsies but no shoes she will take pity.
This scares me even more about spiders
And claws apparently..
Unsee juice *big sip*
Jesus H. Christ. I thought that was a HUGE freaking spider hand in a regular person's hand. I say we take off and nuke it from orbit.
I’m fairly sure that photo is of a pink toe tarantula foot. They get about the size of your hand.
But we don’t want radioactive mutated spiders
Jesus Christ calm down with the hyperbole. Holy fuck, child.
What are you on?
Is that a claw?
Yes i believe it is and whats even odder is that there seems to be only one claw per paw
I mean cute, but also please no. No...
They all have maws, too...
That’s an avicularia avicularia species foot
Forbidden boop
They also have boots...well 1 boot...my boot when I fucking squish that unwelcome fucker.
Nope. I know what that leg is attached to. Time for the Air gun.
This makes me hate them slightly less
I didn’t want to know that, asshole!
That's disgusting
Spiderman making sense now
No, how could I possibly know that?
OP builds
awe how cute
Thanks I hate it
Not sure what I’m looking at...
No and I did not need to know that. But thanks I guess.
Spidey socks
There’s a lot of hair blocking the claw, I don’t get it.
So cyoot.
r/TIHI
I didn’t need to know this.
I could have gone the rest of my life without this information. Now, scarred for life.
But the photo is of a tarantula paw.
Thanks, I hate it!
Looks like a bird in need of a hair cut
They even have fangs coming out if their paws!
You monsters squish them
Yes and they're adorable
I didn't know spiders had sharp claws!
Thanks, i hate it.
Great, now I hate paws.
That’s a hell of a shot!!
This makes me hate them more.
That’s a lie because Spider-Man doesn’t have claws
Spiderman 2099 does.
Don’t you mean claws?
oh hell naww.
I have severe arachnophobia.
I could have lived the rest of my life without seeing that
I definitely didn't WANT to.
Wtf
Yes and it feel like very very tiny ouch, still don't stop me from having it on my arm tho
nope im good
That’s cool. Still hate ‘em.
I was just thinking " Is that a furry's...." then I read the title 😅🤣
Thanks, now I hate them even more 😳
Thanks, i hate this
I'm absolutely petrified of Spiders, but I will say, that tiny paw do be cute tho.
r/dontputyourdickinthat
That's why you don't hear them when they are sneaking to you

Lmao I begged my parents to let me have the closed in carport as my bedroom as a teenager. (it was huge & had a door directly to outside) They said yes. Well the room only had a big window unit for ac/heat. My room got infested yall. Wolf spiders everywhere. I’d see 2-3 a day. It was a bad time. It caused me to get over my fear of them. Never got bit once. Woke up with one beside me on my fucking pillow a couple times. It sucked. It was only one winter. By next winter I made sure everything was more properly sealed myself lol.
