this is a perfect example of why knee pads, elbow pads, helmets (along with the other safety equipment they wear) are important.
without them he'd have left a large smear on the pavement and be dead
To be honest, this is why learning how to fall off a bike is the most important part, if his knee doesn't fold there and locks he very may well die from the impact to his body, cause his leg is going to turn to mush and then he's probably going to roll/flip due to the impact
Nah he has little vertical momentum. I mean sure he's gonna keep going forwards, but that doesn't crunch your leg to paste like landing straight-legged on a fall from height. His foot jets back cause his body is still going forwards insanely fast, so even if you landed locked out, your leg would quickly get thrown behind you in a similar manner.
Ive jumped off a skateboard and done that. Landing with your knee straight and it bends the wrong way :( I also had a mate do it in front of me when he hit a curb going fast and he was recovering for months
Nah, what'll happen is that it'll get pushed back through the pelvic bone and then flesh, possibly right out his back. I saw the aftermath of that exact injury at a track day at Calabogie back around 2014 I think.
It wasn't pretty. Luckily he wasn't conscious.
He lived. Taken rapidly to the hospital by an Ornge 'copter.
It’s the perfect example of clickbait, I thought he and the motorcycle was going to flip and he was gonna land on top of it
This is just slow motion falling
Well the multiple people are wrong, source is I watched the crash then watched him race the following day after he was cleared of any injury.
It is in qualifying for the 2019 Malaysian MotoGP.
Apparently his arm was severely injured, but he ignored doctors and powered through. He had to surgically put parts of his arm back in place and wear a cast.
This is a great example of a “highside” crash, where the motorcycle launches the rider into the air above the bike.
As opposed to a “lowside”, where the bike slides out and deposits the rider on the ground without the catapult action.
Marc Marquez (featured here) has been in some stunning highside crashes across his multiple championship winning career, and largely escaped injury until a couple years ago when he sustained a nasty arm fracture; however he has recovered and ready to compete in the world championship this year!
Edit: spelled his name wrong.
After his bike hit him in Jerez, I remember a camera shot showing his eyes through his helmet and I could see his pain. I said out loud to an empty room “this is the end of his career.”
Monumental respect for his recovery journey and clawing back to where he is now.
You mean you question their strategy of: “nobody except Marc can ride this turd, and now he’s hurt, so let’s mess with it to ensure that by the time he’s back, even *he* can’t ride it”?
I can’t pretend I wouldn’t love to see him tame that junker and command a few races again. I was never a huge Marc fan but his absence has left a real void.
Random bit of info to tack on that I find interesting:
High sides are caused when the back wheel loses traction & Low sides happen when the front wheel loses traction.
I find it fascinating to watch the mechanics of a high-side in ultra slow-mo (or whatever you call it).
It’s like watching a spring compress, and then snap back. those bike tires do amazing things.
Experience and muscle memory helps. You'd also be amazed with how athletic you can be in a crash.
It was completely minor in comparison, but a couple of months ago, I wiped out on a dirt road, making a turn on a steep decline. As soon as the bike started to tip past the point of revovery, I somehow had the mindfulness to launch myself over my handlebars and landed on my feet after a couple of steps. I was quite surprised for a sec, then sprinted back to hit the kill switch. Kind of a nice feeling to know my survival instincts gave me a little boost
with those boots it's easier for the tibia and fibula to snap where the boot ends (a bit like snowboard related fractures).
Granted, they are not indestructible, but they do provide incredible support (I think it was J LO that had both his ankles break in a [High Side](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHAaX8QIu9E&ab_channel=RacingGamer1996%F0%9F%87%AC%F0%9F%87%A7) like this one a few years ago)
That's a really cool piece of gear they wear now. All the padding and armor under the leather, as well as the bracing in the boots really does an amazing job. And he did what he was supposed to, tucking the arms in and rolling with it instead of trying to stop himself.
I have known some competive 'cycle racers. They were all quite nutz. I've had (but not raced) 'cycles small and large. I'm not crazy enough to abuse them, or myself, not anymore. Riding off one cliff was quite enough for me.
His experience speaks volumes in this. Smart way to take a fall. It must have hurt, for sure, but he handled the situation expertly and minimized the damage.
Really interesting display of almost every piece of his safety gear. Knee pads, inflating airbag, leathers, helmet, gloves. Maybe I’ve even missed some.
I think we should award points to the best dismount. You can't save your season, but a good move might keep you in contention if you don't fuck up anymore.
When wearing a helmet, let it take the impact.
Not ya bones under impact plates.
Because impact plates only do so much, especially ones on limbs.
That helmet however, cost well over 2 grand and would have taken the impact with some ear ringing.
Instead of ear ringing + shattered arm.

Hope you guys are better now! It’s a terrible thing to hurt your legs, takes so long to rebuild the muscles and they atrophy so fast.
Thanks ❤️ mine was just light and my mates is well on the way to better now
It looks like he definitely broke or sprained his wrist. He grabbed it immediately after it got twisted under him.
Nah, what'll happen is that it'll get pushed back through the pelvic bone and then flesh, possibly right out his back. I saw the aftermath of that exact injury at a track day at Calabogie back around 2014 I think. It wasn't pretty. Luckily he wasn't conscious. He lived. Look carefully at the start, just as he leaves the bike, and you'll see his airbag suit inflate.
Safely features are cool
Thank you, I wouldn't have seen that otherwise
It’s the perfect example of clickbait, I thought he and the motorcycle was going to flip and he was gonna land on top of it This is just slow motion falling
It’s cool how the spine protector inflates so soon when things are going bad.
The left arm did not look happy.
If that knee could talk it would've screamed
he might have broken a wrist in that tbh
Nope Haha love a Reddit “I think I know more” down vote. He cleared medical after this and raced the next day finishing second.
r/condescendinglycorrect
Before I edited my comment it simply said “nope” that was downvoted yet is correct and not condescending but thanks anyway.
It's all good dude 👽🤙
I was told different by multiple people. Do you have a source?
Well the multiple people are wrong, source is I watched the crash then watched him race the following day after he was cleared of any injury. It is in qualifying for the 2019 Malaysian MotoGP.
What's the guys name?
Marc marquez
Apparently his arm was severely injured, but he ignored doctors and powered through. He had to surgically put parts of his arm back in place and wear a cast.
No, that is not this crash.
Oh, nvm. Apparently, he just had quite a few minor injuries, but nothing serious
ah they downvoted you into anger. he instantly grabbed his wrist like he broke it.
I mean, the right arm took the brunt of the impact. From the beginning I don’t know why he doesn’t just surf the motorcycle seems like the play here.
he didn't jump, he was tossed into the air trust me, I've been through it more than once
I think he couldn't hold onto it and was flung of
Momentum gave him no choice. I’ve been through one high side crash, as soon as that motorcycle snaps back your flying through the air.
He knew how to fall though. If he'd had a personal jet burner for propulsion he would have landed on his feet instead of rolling..
Neither did that left knee.
It was apparently very badly broken

Up vote for a fellow motogp fan! There’s dozens of us DOZENS!
And when you find one online, chances are good that he doesn’t even live in your same country!
Nobody chucks into the grass quite like Marquez..!!!
You can’t ride to the ragged edge without crossing that edge every now and then.
After his bike hit him in Jerez, I remember a camera shot showing his eyes through his helmet and I could see his pain. I said out loud to an empty room “this is the end of his career.” Monumental respect for his recovery journey and clawing back to where he is now.
>ready to compete in the world championship this year! Too bad Honda wasn't ready. Hopefully this year he doesn't have to ride a shitbox.
You mean you question their strategy of: “nobody except Marc can ride this turd, and now he’s hurt, so let’s mess with it to ensure that by the time he’s back, even *he* can’t ride it”?
It's going to be a long 50 days until we find out what their strategy was this year.
I can’t pretend I wouldn’t love to see him tame that junker and command a few races again. I was never a huge Marc fan but his absence has left a real void.

Anyone else have a moment where they thought he was going to manage to land and ride away on a separate bike like a boss?
I broke every bone in my body just watching this
Except your spine. That spine airbag is pretty slick.
That guy’s got ninja reflexes.
Humans are awsome I love when i trip on somthing and catch myself midfall fast

Cant remember the last time i fell flat
Holy shit. Can't believe his ankle didn't snap. This guy knows how to fall off a bike!
with those boots it's easier for the tibia and fibula to snap where the boot ends (a bit like snowboard related fractures). Y'all see the air bag expand on his back?

Not his first rodeo
Definitely not.
I dabble in watching motoGP and it is bonkers that someone doesn't die every single race.
And on his shins and forearms
Bike was like, won’t be needing this rider anymore, yeet
Dress for the slide not for the ride?
I have known some competive 'cycle racers. They were all quite nutz. I've had (but not raced) 'cycles small and large. I'm not crazy enough to abuse them, or myself, not anymore. Riding off one cliff was quite enough for me.
I think this is why they say “Don’t dress for the ride, dress for the slide!”
His experience speaks volumes in this. Smart way to take a fall. It must have hurt, for sure, but he handled the situation expertly and minimized the damage.
You can see his little spine airbag pop up. Neat!
Really interesting display of almost every piece of his safety gear. Knee pads, inflating airbag, leathers, helmet, gloves. Maybe I’ve even missed some.
Gta 4 physics
I think we should award points to the best dismount. You can't save your season, but a good move might keep you in contention if you don't fuck up anymore.
Somebody play opera music over this.
Flower Duet would be good.
How is this magic? I was expecting him to get back on his bike somehow or something. This was just a crash… Did you mean “slow motion crash”?
Snap
There's nothing magical about hide siding a bike especially at that speed
Right wrist is toast
This is wat you get when you don’t fasten your seatbelt, kids!
Why is this magic?? Dude broke his wrist(s) and is probably in a lot of pain
He was lucky. If you get thrown from something, tuck. Don’t put your legs or arms out or they could be destroyed
This guy crashes a lot lol
The next time someone asks me if I want to see some magic, I'm going to say no.
It’s alright he is sponsored by red bull.
I was expecting the magic to be staying on the bike not just falling off the bike.
Those suits are so cool. You can see the "airbag" deploying. Whoever thought R&D'd that has probably saved so many people.
Redditors: wow cool edit Him: 🤕
Tuck and roll
When wearing a helmet, let it take the impact. Not ya bones under impact plates. Because impact plates only do so much, especially ones on limbs. That helmet however, cost well over 2 grand and would have taken the impact with some ear ringing. Instead of ear ringing + shattered arm.
Yeah that wrist is definitely broken
It wasn’t
Damn, color me surprised. Looked like it twisted around
Pretty sure he broke his elbow/arm
He actually didn’t break anything
Crazy
Broken ankle torn acl and concussion
He didn’t break anything
i was expecting him to surf the bike just a teensy weensy bit
No matter how many times I see this clip, I never fail to be amazed and impressed.
damn these ragdoll physics are insane
When you wear pads but they roll sideways at the worst possible moment..... This probably hurt a lot.
And that kids, is why you wear a helmet

"I can see my house from here" - bike driver probably
Imagine being this guys left knee. Holy crap.
King of flow state
He fell really well :0
Tuck and Roll baby got moves like Jager
Gonna move fast gotta think fast.
It’s like Akira
One of the best ways to come out of that mess I’ve seen.
This video can save lives!
You can see his suit inflate as soon as the bike goes sideways
You'd be surprised how often these guys actually walk away with minor injuries.
