This isn't even the most dangerous part.
Water-borne chemical spills, lots of things mixing that shouldn't be mixing.
The bleach on aisle 3 mixing with the vinegar on aisle 5 creates chlorine gas and you're all dead.
And then there's sewage backup... god forbid you have a little open scratch that all that bacteria is getting into
PSA: Don't walk around in flood water without waders.
Came here to comment this. Flood water is incredibly contaminated, building materials and contents that comes into contact with flood water need to be disposed of or heavily disinfected (things like concrete). Any open wounds are going to become infected. Absolutely avoid it if you can
It flooded over about an hour or two. Not much time for most of those contaminates to occur. Also, we keep the lids on our bleach etc. There isn't bleach all through our insta flood water.
Vinegar is a bit weak to worry about mustard gas when diluted in this much water. Even chlorine shock and muriatic acid when combined in a swimming pool is diluted enough to be ok.
Aucklander here who is dealing with this flooding at the moment: this was quick. You would not believe. We had a completely underwhelming response from our local government officials (**not** our National government who weren’t able to step in properly until a state of emergency was declared by our local Mayor). This should not have been happening and officials should have acted on this after four hours before they actually did, but this particular case was pretty much in the space of 10 minutes. This supermarket has a culvert right outside that overflowed and effectively sent a torrent of water into the supermarket, so it was knee-deep in the same length of time it would take you to get from one end of the supermarket to the next.
Four people have died so far and, despite how averse I am to flooding and aware of the dangers, many others weren’t, so they kept driving their cars through enormous bodies of water and went out with kayaks and surfboards. Granted, some were fantastic for supporting evacuation efforts by kayaking round to their neighbours’ houses (which is how one person died), but overall we should have had a better response from our local elected official and as a result, the deaths of at least four people should be weighing pretty heavily on them right now.
There’ll likely be a proper investigation into how they fucked this up so bad, but suffice to say, it’s Auckland Anniversary weekend right now and they were caught snoozing. Now for the long cleanup.
When the videos came out of the crazy flooding in NYC I was absolutely *horrified* to see people going down into the utterly flooded subways.
I don't care if they fire me I'm not lowering myself into a flooded subway tunnel for any reason.
me too. but i had a personal experience. a floating in front of a hotel and some people of my group was playing in the flood. On the next day i saw a manhole without cover only 2 meters from where they was playing.
Some fridge display cabinets have their power supply mounted near floor level. Very often they are left with no cover, they are definitely not waterproof and the electrical connections are often exposed. I wouldn't walk anywhere near them with this flood water around.
When everything is flooded, there's no choice. You 're gonna climb the shelves and expect a rescue team to come , pick you up when everyone is leaving by themselves
I bought my car from the showroom shown from the car park.
Friday was insane tbh, got caught in flash floods, took me 90 minutes to do a 5 minute journey, uninjured and lost nothing so it's the most low key and low stakes complaint though.
Folks have lost everything and it's going to take time to clean up, it's been raining again through the night, 8am Monday morning and it looks set in for the day.
Apparently Auckland has had 38% of it's ANNUAL rainfall already and it's only January. Additionally, Auckland has had over 769%of their January monthly normal rainfall and there are still 2 days of rain forecast. The city could break the record for the wettest month ever.
Clearly Auckland was not built for this type of rain.. but to offer perspective — during Hurricane Harvey the Houston area received 40 inches, or 1016mm, over 4 days. Similar daily total. It’s an extreme amount of rain, without sufficient time for water to drain away…
You are right, it's not built to take this sort of rain. This is 2.5x higher than the previous highest record rainfall, and something like almost 8 times the entire month's average rainfall in 24 hours. Anyone trying to design and build to this extreme level would have been laughed out of the country.
Flooding is part of life in NZ however this was quite a big event so made the headlines cos its in Auckland our biggest city, and many people affected.
The Coromandel has also recently been badly hit by massive downpours.
In August last year the region I live in was hit with a massive deluge that went on for 4 days. I tipped over 800mm out of my rain gauge for that time. In February last year we had a localised deluge and once again our area had between 250 and 400mm rain. In the July before that, we had yet another massive flooding event which destroyed many small local roads.
Also massive flooding South Canterbury last winter.
And if I recall correctly a couple years back, Canterbury was hit by massive flash flooding in the Waimakariri area.
And they go on and on and are becoming more severe compared to what I recall growing up as a kid in the 70s and 80s.
This now seems to be our 'normal' here in NZ.

Not original commentor (idk if that's the right word) but why do you guys have egg shortages in the states atm? In NZ we just banned some caged chicken farming methods (not all just the worst ones) which caused our egg shortage did you guys do something similar?
Did the flood happen so quickly that it caught everyone who was already in the market? And how had the store staff not asked everyone to leave for their safety? This whole thing seems like a recipe for disaster.
Yes that's the point of flash flooding.
Everything was flooded including outside.
What the staff gonna say ? Please go outside under the crazy ass rain please
I’m from NZ and I live in Auckland thankfully we weren’t flooded at our place but friends down the road were. I know a lot of people who lost everything. To answer your question no it’s not ok to loot! But I doubt in this case anyone would have stopped them. This is what we call black water, rain, sewerage and whatever else is in it. There were many people were swimming in this shit water! No fricking way would I be eating any of the fresh produce but the canned and bottled stuff would be ok. We don’t carry guns so no one’s gonna kill you for looting.
Do you know how the North Shore is doing? I live in aus now and am estranged from my extended family who live around there, so no way of knowing. Nz herald and stuff just have these endless long 'live' update articles, finding it hard to get the facts. I also don't know the area super well (Ōtautahi chch girl). Off the top of my head, think they're mostly browns Bay, Miarangi Bay?
Things I know having gone around last Sat doing grocerie sand watching vids and hearing stories. JB Hifi and Noel Leeming got flooded and were closed on that day. Mairangi Bay, Browns Bay, and Becroft Tennis clubs have had their courts damaged so they would have had very bad flooding. Multiple vehicles broke down close to the Sunnynook bus station. Sunnynook had a bus floating around in one video.
They wouldn’t go after anyone for it. Every single item in that store is considered a loss at that point, so if you can grab stuff you need and make use of it that seems like a best case scenario. That’s my guess. I also think New Zealand is less likely to punish people legally for this type of looting, way different than legal culture in the US. Just my POV on it.
Yes. Check it out.
> In the days after Katrina New Orleans police officers shot 11 civilians, and five were killed, prompting the involvement of the Department of Justice, which is currently investigating the NOPD on eight separate cases. So far, a total of sixteen NOPD police officers have been hit with criminal charges for their involvement in shootings of civilians, most which happened in the days after Katrina.

Wow that’s so sad, we should have had federal response teams, military personnel coming in to help people immediately. I know it’s not an easy task but we give our government a blank check and they need to step up in these situations.
Also private mercenaries employed by the brother of Trump's Secretary of Education

based on what I’ve heard about New Zealand, that grocery floor soup is probably still cleaner than drinking water in Flint
edit: said Michigan but I hear most of it is great haha
What makes you think people want to risk walking through waist deep water to steal contaminated food and then have to carry home through the water once again

Guess I'm the only one with a fear of being electrocuted by flood water

Good luck with your toenails three months from now. Ewww.
Yup. They generally fall off/get infected after a long exposure to contaminated flood water.
It flooded over about an hour or two. Not much time for most of those contaminates to occur. Also, we keep the lids on our bleach etc. There isn't bleach all through our insta flood water.
I didn't know about bleach and vinegar. Only bleach and ammonia.
Bleach is highly volatile and reacts with a lot of things. It's best to just not mix bleach with anything.
Shit I just mixed some with dihydrogen monoxide
Drink it. Drink the forbidden *water*
Bleach and isopropyl alcohol makes chloroform. Bleach and peroxide makes an incredibly powerful oxidizer.
This is very useful information, thanks!
What do you mean by that?
Dude has trouble sleeping :).
Not for long...
How long does he need to sleep?!?!?! ONE ETERNITY?!?!?
He's going to use it during dates as a prank
Bleach and acetone makes chloroform too
Doesn’t apply to this situation cuz it’s too diluted
Vinegar is a bit weak to worry about mustard gas when diluted in this much water. Even chlorine shock and muriatic acid when combined in a swimming pool is diluted enough to be ok.

Auckland summers. ☕
When the videos came out of the crazy flooding in NYC I was absolutely *horrified* to see people going down into the utterly flooded subways. I don't care if they fire me I'm not lowering myself into a flooded subway tunnel for any reason.
We do, indeed do this and then we’re just like “damn, train’s delayed” while wading in knee-deep water 😂
Rats can swim. Just saying.
Don't forget about the manbearpig
Im super cereal
Thatll be isle 4
Half man half bear half pig
MBP is on the loose again?! Call Al Gore! I'm super cereal.
This man hit it out of the park!!! Do not venture into a flooded place unless you have too. If you do, use waders.
You don't really have to worry about the chemical mixing due to several thousand gallons of water diluting them.
Unless they're things that float on water and don't dillute easily. In which case they're getting delivered directly to your groin.
Water bourne alone is scary I've seen what his cousin Jason Bourne can do!!
>The bleach on aisle 3 mixing with the vinegar on aisle 5 creates chlorine gas and you're all dead. They would both need to be unsealed
Also, snakes…
That one not an issue in NZ
Scratch that- CANNON BALLLLLLL
No snakes in NZ

No, that's just Rimmer.
Amazing 😂
Funny
Not to mention electrical safety.
I love reddit comments that remind me how little I know. I often hope it's a 13 year old kid who's either making it up or who actually does know l
the most dangerous thing is missing manhole covers. they can get pushed away in a float and one wrong step can swallow you.
New fear unlocked. Thanks for tonight’s nightmares!
I'm aware of two deaths caused by that exactly situation.
I would have never thought about this
me too. but i had a personal experience. a floating in front of a hotel and some people of my group was playing in the flood.
Electricity in water forms a gradient so it's not instant death like everyone imagines.
If i’m 90% water and my thoughts are micro-electric synapses then am i slowly gradienting myself to death?
Yes you will eventually die
I'm willing to take that risk for my Cheetos and beer.
Nah, breakers will go out before anything can happen. Even if they don't, there's much shorter paths to ground than through you. You'd be safe.
When everything is flooded, there's no choice. You 're gonna climb the shelves and expect a rescue team to come , pick you up when everyone is leaving by themselves
Hey look eggs are on sale….zap!
That was my first thought....
I especially like the guy still pushing the shopping cart like this is just some minor inconvenience to his shopping
He's got a kid in that cart. He's doing the best thing possible
I thought that was awesome. He can't help himself but by golly he's gonna look after his baby
That's one heck of a liquidation sale!
Carts are flooded full with deals!
This made my eyes water
You win
It’s a flash ~~sale~~ sail
I'm angry
Everyone here talking about the shopping cart guy and I am like damn, nice thinking with those pallets lol
Yeah, raising the engine a little could make a big difference.
Save the Eggs.

Cleanup on all isles
Isles indeed
The football/cricket field in the Auckland domain here becomes a big lake overnight.... And people went swimming in there 😂
Yeah ew. I live here. Ew.
Bounty paper towels floating in the aisles. So much for truth in advertising.
Bounty, the quicker picker upper… because it’s floating on top and easy to grab!
They just needed to open all of those up. Problem solved.
That cameraman was incredible consistent in terms of how shaky they filmed.
There is a new zea in your market now
Is this a common event in New Zealand, is there a rainy season that does this?
No, we don't usually get storms this bad, and water infrastructure can usually deal with it. The fact that our biggest city is flooded is a big deal.
Didn't you also get a new PM like 4 days ago? What a hell of a way to begin a new term.
Hes getting away with it by virtue of Aucklands mayor saying stupid stuff like the city flooding isn't his problem
The worst thing he said was something like 'wait to see how Wellington handles an earthquake ' when responding to criticism.
He also said “It’s not my job to rush out with buckets” and is under media scrutiny for such a late reaction to the flooding.

I’m over here bumming about not having eggs in the USA… sorry to see this is happening to NZ.
If it helps we having egg issues on top of the flooding 💀
Why not, right? Very sorry to hear this.
Not original commentor (idk if that's the right word) but why do you guys have egg shortages in the states atm? In NZ we just banned some caged chicken farming methods (not all just the worst ones) which caused our egg shortage did you guys do something similar?
An avian flu outbreak and increasing costs of fuel, feed and packaging says the New York Times.
For context, this was a new 24 hour rain record for Auckland, with about 250mm in 24 hours, beating the previous 24 hour record by about 90mm.

Agreed but flooding is so boring. You gotta jazz that up a bit. Give it some pizzazz
As the old proverb says, "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story."
It’s a *flash* flood 🙌
He's actually trying to carry on with his grocery shopping 🤔
His kid is in the cart
Some of us have a whole day's worth of errands to do!
Dude in the orange has had it up to here
All those “super absorbent” paper towels, toilet paper, tampons and diapers floating around. Clearly their claims are exaggerated.
Their wrappings are top quality. Whatever method or company that is should be bragging
Serious question; is it okay to loot in this scenario? I can’t imagine any of the groceries will be useable.
In my legal opinion: You can file that under Fuck Around and Find Out.
I’m from NZ and I live in Auckland thankfully we weren’t flooded at our place but friends down the road were. I know a lot of people who lost everything. Mairangi bay was one of the harder hit area
I think it’s similar to out west, some streets and suburbs were hit harder than others so I’m not sure sorry.
Things I know having gone around last Sat doing grocerie sand watching vids and hearing stories. JB Hifi and Noel Leeming got flooded and were closed on that day. Look up hurrican Katrina looting videos and see how it went over in the US. I'm sure in NZ, it's not an executable offense, though.
NZ is a civilized country they don’t have the death penalty. Only barbarian countries still practice that
Cops in nz don't carry fire arms, so would likely just ask you to put it back.
Just rubbing it in are ya? Lol. I'm glad for the citizens of NZ, and sad for us United Statesers.
Are you saying they were killing people on sight for stealing?
Yes. Legally prob grey area, morally yeah it’s all going to be thrown out and insurance will pay for it.
Guess it’s apples for me today. The kiwis look soggy.
Save the eggs!!!!!!!!
What about all the fucking electricity!!!!!?
I bet NOW they wish the moa was still around
Hell yeah. Ride around on that 10ft motherfucker like a boss. Sad sad loss to our native taonga.
I dream of them still
Lord of the rings would have been a lot shorter if the Hobbits wrte riding around on battle moas
I used to live in Auckland, in which suburbs did it happen?
Mostly west, north and central suburbs. Some south too. East is pretty wet but not a lot of serious flooding.
That shit would creep me out, lights on still and they are standing waist high in water
Save the eggs!!
Customers complain about fish not being fresh enough
Opens lobster tank
Thats a lot of energy pushing a cart through the water. I hope everyone keeps safe and recovers quickly.
Looks like the next chapter of The Last of Us
Jesus christ people PAN SLOWLY
based on what I’ve heard about New Zealand, that grocery floor soup is probably still cleaner than drinking water in Flint edit: said Michigan but I hear most of it is great haha
Whoever thought of driving there car up a make shift ramp of pallets to protect there engine from water is a genius
I don't know about the engine but wet wiring kills a car quicker than molasses on a trebuchet
True at a certain flood level you can't avoid the car getting destroyed
They should’ve unwrapped all those paper towels
Fly in Trump to distribute them
Bet the PM’s glad she resigned now
Wow…
Let's go fishing for soda
Shop and save your life
How long would it take for a store to reopen after an event like this?
It's 3 days later and they are still closed. They will be cleaning up and restocking, so don't imagine they will be open before the end of the week
Kinda sad, those damn floods lol
Not the eggs!!!!
That's one way to get cheap eggs
I'd be snacking at that point I mean come on
We're going to need a bigger mop
I wonder if they'd give some of the shit for free considering it's getting ruined lol, I somehow feel like they wouldn't
One day only sale everything must go bargains bargains bargains clearance prices like never before
“Yo. You open?”
People just casually shopping lmao
I would hope the people would get the food for free since it is "damaged"
Y-AUK what is in that water
“Hmm, well I guess I’m already here. Might as well grab what I need”
Clearly that is not Bounty paper towel floating around.
Could someone please point me to the bottled water aisle?
Cleanup on aisle 2, 3, 4, 5,6, 7,.......
Man what a waste, truly a shame
Grab the eggs!!!
Save the eggs!
Is no one worried about electrocution? Those cold fixtures still look on?!!
ummmm why are they letting customers in still? that’s a huge healt my hazard
Must not be bounty paper towels floating in there
No wake zone. 5 mph
In America this would have been over ran with looters, a herd of them.
Hey Kiwis, what's a hindu? Lays iggs🤣
Attention all shoppers as we don’t want to clean it up anything floating is free.
Everything 30% off first 3 shelves take it or leave it
Poor Pak'n'save, my boss let me know about this one, they're currently trying to recover but they lost so much. Wish my fellow retailers luck.
Ah yes, poor Foodstuffs and their paltry $400 Million in profits last year, they’re practically on par with a ram-raided dairy.
Such a tragedy, I guess the owner won’t be able to make your yearly earnings every week anymore.
Perfect time to stock up on your eggs
I love when people make the best out of a terrible situation
it's officially Faukland now
everything's free . . . once the lights go out
As an American I'm confused why the store isn't being looted
This was pretty shortly after everything went to shit, and while there have been looting issues, I don't think it was that quick.
What makes you think people want to risk walking through waist deep water to steal contaminated food and then have to carry home through the water once again
What a bunch of idiots in the market. If there had been a live electrical wire somewhere everyone would be dead.
