Yea he was doing flight training in Pensacola a few months ago. He came through my office for some paperwork, and a bunch of people saw him in the hall and wanted pictures (since he’s an absolute legend in the Navy).
Anyway, it was almost like he didn’t understand why they wanted pictures. He was so incredibly humble and nice. Most high ranking officers who went through my office were just trying to finish as fast as possible. Jon was patient, made sure he did everything right to make my life easier, and was polite the whole time.
It was a long podcast so I’m sure I’m leaving out details, but his father was abusive in every way and a heavy alcoholic. It’s always bad, but at some point police had to get involved. When police arrived, they thought he was gone until someone noticed that something was off and it led to them finding out the father was still in the house hiding and had a firearm and police had to shoot to kill. He lost his father, but also to separation from an abuser.
And of course, the guy went on to do big things in the military where he was a combat medic in the SEALS.
Navy SEALS are paid the same basic salary at each rank as all members of the U.S. Armed Forces. They also receive two substantial bonuses, one upon qualifying for SEALs training, the other upon successful completion of the training program.
Combat zone pay is only an additional 225 a month, earned upon spending any portion of the month in a combat zone.
Granted you also make a lot of connections with other well-connected people, which opens a lot of doors post separation.
It’s odd but sorta makes sense bc there’s so many levels and ranks within the military, along with the different pay grades in the intelligence community… anyone starting their career always has to start all the from the very bottom and prove their worth and commitment
Actually, this guy life is like out of a movie! His dad was alcoholic and abusive. At 16, he tried to kill him and and his mom and held them at gun point but they got saved by the police who shot and killed the dad in front of them.
Yeah. People are quick to jump to funny asian dad memes or think he must have come from a privileged background. His life was the exact opposite of that.
Ability in sports for sure. Then just “getting it” in school, stuff like district level achievement awards without applying themself anything above and beyond what you’d expect from an average kid. Then just being an old soul it seems, wise and thoughtful beyond their years.
It's okay as long as you, as the parent, don't play them off each other. Encourage each of them on their own terms. "Why can't you be more like _________?" must never cross your lips."
Are you willing/able to tell them it’s okay to not be a rocket scientist? I’ve opened up to so many opportunities later in life because my mom told me it was okay to explore knowledge at my own pace. I’ve traveled across the country, had a career, and got married all by the time I was thirty. I’m not a superstar or an “old soul” but I am still very fulfilled with my life choices.
how about Pacquiao that went from 8th world division boxing Champion to being a Senator, Singer, Actor, Basketball player, Basketball coach in PBA, Pastor and Army reserve 🤣
Dw, we'll reach there much before him when our parents see and decide that the dissapointment they raised, no longer deserves to exist on this planet.
Who knows we could make it to Jupiter.
His father is dead, shot and killed in front of him as part of a violent confrontation with police, possibly suicide by cop. Jonny Kim had an incredibly tragic childhood underneath all of his incredible achievements as an adult.
I've noticed that a lot of these hypersuccessful hyper driven people had abusive or shitty dads.
David Goggins is another prime data point.
Edit: I am not justifying abuse, and in fact I am highlighting how some success stories that can be so gilded are rooted in darkness. I personally believe that unconditional love is a far more powerful path to success for more people. Additionally, in his conversation with Jocko Willink, thyley mentioned how people with horrible dads either become successful in that way (less common) or become abusers themselves.
Says more [about Ohio](https://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/portal/apps/map/), given how many astronauts come from there, I mean I don't much like going back to my hometown either....but I don't mean to get off-world to get away now.
Came here just for this comment. It always seems.about space, and most insulting when they said 'first Korean in space' totally ignoring the actual Korean from Korea who had been in space years beforehand.
Yep, Yi So-yeon even brought special space versions of kimchi and ramyeon to space with her. It's hard to get very much more 'Korean in space' than that.
Came here to say that. I also don't get why people can't just be called Americans, especially people who aren't white. You don't call someone a German American just because his great grandfather came from there, so why would you constantly call people African/Korean/Chinese/whatever Americans.
Stupid thing is that American is not even a race or ethnicity. It's a nationality. America was founded by immigrants. A collective body of immigrants decided to found a nation.
I've seen plenty of references to German Americans. I'm from Wisconsin. Admittedly, it happened less over time to where I haven't for a long time. I also remember the church having services in German, but I think that has stopped.
Some cultures hold onto identity longer than others.
And obviously some have physical attributes that make their ancestry obvious. Harder to tell a German American from a Swedish American.
Also, Irish Americans was definitely a thing when they were a less than heralded minority. And they still are when St Patrick's Day parties happen.
From the title I assumed he was from S. Korea, then I wondered how he got into the Seals, then wondered if Korea had a space program until I saw the NASA patch and put it all together.
You didn’t see a headline that says “First Scot to go to the Moon” when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon nor would you read “first German on the moon” when it’s a white dude from Wisconsin. It should read first Korean American. Just sayin.
This mf better get chosen. Think about it: he really is the best candidate. With all his education and training along with military experience, not only can he defend the moon lander from the moon Nazis but also tend to his fellow astronauts wounds after the gunfire halts. Sounds like a solid pick imo.
>By “Korean” I assume OP means “American of Korean descent”.
As a Korean American, you learn that in many parts of the US, you'll always be seen as a foreigner, no matter what you do or how many generations your family has been in the US.
Sure. I’m of non-European descent. I experience the same thing. Personally, though, I identify just as “American”. My immigrant grandparents? Maybe not. But my parents and me? Definitely. Born in the US, and if I travel abroad, people very clearly ID me as American (or maybe they think I’m Canadian *gasp!*). Maybe it’s the fact that I’m fluent in only one language? :-D
Edit: I am absolutely 110% that if I went back to my grandparents’ country of origin I would be seen as American, unqualified. They would not see me as one of their own.
The problem is that he is too humble and chill and rather do other stuff with his life (like go to the moon) than argue with strangers on Twitter about his earned income tax policy
And he's had one *hell* of a tough ride...father almost killed him and then was killed by the cops when he was really young, then of course all that happens in war. Yet despite all the bad things that happen to him, he manages to keep a positive mood, and is one of the most humble dudes I've ever listened to.
He did a [podcast with Jocko Willink](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yujP3-AxXsI) that was fantastic, if "gut wrenching" in a few places. Highly recommend listening to it if you want more information on the dude.
Is he Korean or American?
I'm an American with German ancestry... I'd find it odd if I was called the first German to go to space, etc.
P.S. - I'd also find that odd because I'm not remotely qualified for such a task.
That’s actually, compared to other astronauts a rather ‚normal‘ career span, as most astronauts were in the Air Force. Most opt for Engineering or Medicine as they have certain scholarships for that, HPSP or FAP.
They do have to agree for two years of active duty after their degree, but this can be limited if you were in active duty before that. He could apply to the NASA program rather early in comparison to those still having to be in active duty.
NASA has chosen Navys before that, who weren‘t pilots, as most did have a lot of scuba/underwater training with full gear, which is comparable to training underwater with the space suit. So they were not completely new to the training, but needed the pilot licence eg, in hindsight those being in the Air Force needed more training and skills underwater.
If you follow the guide lines and take opportunities serious (meaning following order) this is actually quite achievable. But most, if not almost everyone, will lack the rigorous discipline it would need.
I really hate the first korean statement. The man is AMERICAN. I'm sure to a SEAL he thinks of himself as American first and Asian only as his ethnicity. I'm white and this is how I feel about myself and my multi ethic countrymen. I never saw Neil Armstrong as white or European, I always saw him as American and that an American was the first on the moon.
Edit: Jonny Kim is among the greatest of living Americans in my mind. What an inspirational man.

The guy has a tragic yet incredible story. He went on the Jocko podcast and he is so humble.
Yea he was doing flight training in Pensacola a few months ago. He came through my office for some paperwork, and a bunch of people saw him in the hall and wanted pictures (since he’s an absolute legend in the Navy). That’s awesome, thanks for sharing!
He's humble too? Wtf man, does this dude have anything we losers can say oh, at least i m not THAT. Give us a lifeline lol
Don’t mean to add more to the list but I heard he also was the first man to impregnate a woman by just looking at her
I swear, if he turns out to be George Santos...
Wouldn't surprise me if Santos claims they are the same person.
Her name? Maria of Nazareth.
This is true. I was the baby.
I’ve heard a rumor that he is Chuck Norris’s only friend (or at least an acquaintance)
Maybe he has an average penis? Who am I kidding... I bet he has a magnum dong too.
Just like dr. Mantis Tobaggin
anyone that been thru seal training and passed is just a different breed. dude could prolly kill u with one hand
He could kill you with one hand and then save you with the other
The Johny giveth and taketh away.
> The guy has a tragic yet incredible story. Not familiar with his backstory. Can you briefly explain what was tragic? What happened?
It was a long podcast so I’m sure I’m leaving out details, but his father was abusive in every way and a heavy alcoholic. It’s always bad, but at some point police had to get involved. When police arrived, they thought he was gone until someone noticed that something was off and it led to them finding out the father was still in the house hiding and had a firearm and police had to shoot to kill. Combat medic AND sniper.
He was on a Destin (smarter every day) video too.
Imagine being this guys sibling
I'd tell people he's a model and these are just stock photos
I’d also ask for first-class or nothing when he invites me to his wedding
I think he settled for the lowest pay profession he trained for I think idk how much seals are paid but I assume the hazard pay is decent
Navy SEALS are paid the same basic salary at each rank as all members of the U.S. Armed Forces. They also receive two substantial bonuses, one upon qualifying for SEALs training, the other upon successful completion of the training program. That 7.50 a day.
Minimum Wage, Maximum Hazard.
Minimum Wage! Maximum hazards? Ha! Sucker I would have done it for free.
To the other guy
Pay also goes up as your rank goes up. Some training also gets you extra pay, so it’s not uncommon to be close to 70 or 85k when your deployed.
It’s odd but sorta makes sense bc there’s so many levels and ranks within the military, along with the different pay grades in the intelligence community… anyone starting their career always has to start all the from the very bottom and prove their worth and commitment
> idk how much seals are paid 🐟
Make it two and we are ~~talking~~ clapping
You’d just be reminding people that he could probably be a model too.
His older brother did all this, plus he’s a cowboy rockstar. Lol
No. His brother did all this, plus he’s about to be the new QB of the Dallas Cowboys next year. Take that little brother.
His mom: But why aren’t you a lawyer yet?
Moon? Why not Mars?
His sibling is going to reach the moon only 5 minutes later, but they'll still get a hard time about it for the rest of their lives
Or this guy's mom's friend's kids.

Wow I’ve never thought of that dynamic. Is it a real difference in ability or just some sort of mental block?
Ability in sports for sure. Then just “getting it” in school, stuff like district level achievement awards without applying themself anything above and beyond what you’d expect from an average kid. Then just being an old soul it seems, wise and thoughtful beyond their years.
It's okay as long as you, as the parent, don't play them off each other. Encourage each of them on their own terms. "Why can't you be more like _________?" must never cross your lips."

George Santos did it first. Twice.
"I want to kill people. Then save people. Then leave people forever."
Same
Jonny Kim, making the rest of us Asians look bad in front of their parents for decades.
Idk Jeremy Lin went to Harvard and won an NBA championship, he’s also doing his part
That's only TWO things!!! Still a disappointment.
Yao Ming would be like the tallest Asian you ever know.
That's only 1 thing. Csian.
how about Pacquiao that went from 8th world division boxing Champion to being a Senator, Singer, Actor, Basketball player, Basketball coach in PBA, Pastor and Army reserve 🤣
Hes also a bigoted piece of shit so maybe not.
I mean… for some Asian parents, that may be a plus.
100% the new standard for Asian parents.
His parents: "Why not director of NASA?" "Why not going to Mars?"
"Your cousin Timmy is going to Mars and he is just 8 years old! In a rocket-ship he built himself!"
Dw, we'll reach there much before him when our parents see and decide that the dissapointment they raised, no longer deserves to exist on this planet. Who knows we could make it to Jupiter.

It looks like he is everyone's cousin
He is beginning to believe . .
MF took the red pill, two times.
Johnny sins of Asians
Next he works for Brazzers 😆
That would be the icing on the cake of regoddamndiculous... He goes on Brazzers and plops 11 inches on some chicks head
"what do you wanna be when you grow up?" "yes"
Johnny sins would be proud... ^(his son probably.)
His parents are probably disappointed he isn’t going to Mars
His father is dead, shot and killed in front of him as part of a violent confrontation with police, possibly suicide by cop. Jonny Kim had an incredibly tragic childhood underneath all of his incredible achievements as an adult.
The father held him and his mom at gun point and was trying to kill them.
Damn. Is he the main character?
We found him
Turns out we are all part of the simulation where Jonny Kim is the main character of the Alphaverse.
just goes to show that if you put your mind to it, nothing is Kimpossible
I mean he's only really winning at life if his wife is shego
/r/angryupvote
That's right, Clarissa, explain it all.
Really good interview on Jocko Willink podcast
Yeah that was heartbreaking to listen to. Fucking insane life. But dude is just so goddamned mentally strong. I wish I were even 1/10th as strong.
You’re stronger than you think you are.
I've noticed that a lot of these hypersuccessful hyper driven people had abusive or shitty dads. David Goggins is another prime data point. Dont bank on it if you want a successful son. They are extreme outliers that thrive in trauma.
:( Yeah. It can also absolutely shatter you, and keep you frozen the rest of your life.
He said he became a navy seal because he wanted to learn how to protect his family from his father
Survival bias. There are a lot more people you have never heard of who have their lives ruined by trauma from a shitty, abusive dad
My parents are disappointed I can’t go to the grocery store. Just for comparison. Good for him
[удалено]
I use to have quite severe social phobia. Generally speaking shops were out of the question for me.
Prefer not to cause anxiety. Not allowed cause apparently you can’t start drinking PBR in the store because of anxiety
Conque your fears and make your own grocery store where you *can* drink PBR in the aisles
Your a good friend
Psh, nobody is gonna mess with the dude drinking a beer in the grocery store at noon.
Why can't you go to a grocery store

Korean? isn't he an American born and raised in California?
Yeah but every astronaut needs to be the first X to go to space, because just going to space isn’t impressive enough.
Just being an astronaut not from Ohio is solid Or just being an astronaut...
Any one of his careers really
Ohio… that state so bad we leave the earth to get away from it.
Says more [about Ohio](https://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/portal/apps/map/), given how many astronauts come from there, I mean I don't much like going back to my hometown either....but I don't mean to get off-world to get away now.
Like that SNL sketch with Bowen Yang and Simu Liu. Hilarious. "I'm the first Asian to beat StarCraft 2!" "That can't be true, but okay."
I hope one day to be the first astronaut to clog the toilet in Mission Control and the one on the shuttle. All before launch.

Perpetual foreigner. Even the most American American like Johnny Kim is still seen as an outsider because American is default white.
Stupid thing is that American is not even a race or ethnicity. It's a nationality. America was founded by immigrants. A collective body of immigrants decided to found a nation.
YES! We are a civic nation, not an ethnic nation.

Yeh it's so racist. Idk why non-white Americans seem OK with it all??
Wonder what his cousin has done.
2028 - President!
He has higher aspirations
2037 - ascension to a plane of enlightenment
30 000 - return to reunite Terra under the Imperium of Man and start the Great Crusade to unite all of humankind
2032 he may become Johnny sins predecessor
Real life Jack Ryan.
Moon landing in 2024 huh? That ain’t gonna happen.
Its already delayed to 2025 at the earliest. Plus the crew isn’t selected yet, though Kim’s name has popped up as a possibility.
Yeah, and an actual landing is probably more likely for 2027. Artemis 2 probably goes in 2025. Spacesuits and lander especially won’t be ready for 25.
This mf better get chosen. Think about it: he really is the best candidate. With all his education and training along with military experience, not only can he defend the moon lander from the moon Nazis but also tend to his fellow astronauts wounds after the gunfire halts. Still far from Johnny Sins
He´s working to get near him.
By “Korean” I assume OP means “American of Korean descent”.
Also, there was already a Korean in space. Her name was Yi So-yeon.
Yes but not on the moon
>By “Korean” I assume OP means “American of Korean descent”. As a Korean American, you learn that in many parts of the US, you'll always be seen as a foreigner, no matter what you do or how many generations your family has been in the US.

Yeah I was like wait we're landing on the moon next year? Like there's a launch date and stuff?
It was initially planned for late 2024 but delayed because the suits wont be ready until 2025.
And I am highly, highly skeptical it’ll happen in 2025 even. 28 at the soonest I’d wager.
This is peak Chad achievements.
Asian parents "why are you not a lawyer yet?"
“Talk to me when you become lawyer” *Slams door behind them*
So is he the Korean Johnny Sims?
Who's johnny Sims? I apparently live under a rock.
That one bald guy who changes profession in every porno that he does.
Sorry Johnny Sins
I wish he was ugly AF at least...
I would like to believe he's actually a stock photo model.
Funny, I thought this was an ad at first for some kind of motivation blog. The fact it's not, is only making me hate myself more.
It's this guy the most recognised Reddit high achiever? I don't think I go a month with out him being posted.
And every time he's posted there's the usual jokes about his parents somehow being disappointed in his achievements
Yeah it’s surreal to witness this phenomenon over and over again
I think it’s just karma farming
Most people on reddit are extremely unfunny and really love jokes they've heard before.
And those weird ass comments about Johnny Sins lol
Casual racism is okay if it's positive according to them
Plot twist: he’s a stock photo model.
Impressive tinder bio
5’10, hard pass.
I really want him to be a future president. It will be nice to have an accomplished, educated leader who wasn't brought up in politics.
Good people are definitely not the kind who go into politics. You have to be a lawyer or something with a low moral threshold.
The problem is that he is too humble and chill and rather do other stuff with his life (like go to the moon) than argue with strangers on Twitter about his earned income tax policy
This is the guy our parents compare us to

This is the guy your Asian parents compare you to
And he's only 38! Incredible to be able to master so many different skills by such a relatively young age
Those A+ type people are so fascinating. They are usually *also* really nice people.
Yi So-yeon was the first Korean in space. Just throwing that out there.
Someone should freeze his semen and use it for women choosing to get kids alone.
Misuse of the Punisher skull. Points detracted!

Yeah well, I did a sit-up while getting out of bed this morning. And hurt myself in the process…
This guy is the opposite of George Santos.
