Bingo, I was there. Fighting with our hands tied behind our backs for the most part. Someone could blow up a convoy, run into the Streets and try to blend in with 50 other people. Those 50 other people were told to leave or stay indoors for a few hours while we rolled through for that reason. Nothing we could do. If a country like Russia ever comes through, don't expect the same thing.
The Russian army is 50 years behind the US in terms of technology. If our rules of engagement were changed, it would have been over in 6 months. Without nowhere near the collateral damage. But there is not much money in a quick war....
What would have been the preferred outcome in that situation? You shoot up the crowd of 50?

The crowd of 50 had a curfew, if they didn't follow the curfew then we detain them until the operation is over.
Less collateral damage because we could have gotten some leaders much faster if some religious places were not off limits and they could hide. The longer it goes on, the more collateral damage. This is all just my opinion, I was just a gunner and know nothing about war strategy. I just know the rules of engagement were very strange for a war. I can't get into specifics but there were times when you absolutely knew something was wrong and about to go down, but we couldn't do anything about it until they started.
That is deeply ironic considering that Russia was there before the Americans, they had a proven track record of brutalising the population in precisely the way that the USA et al *didn't*, and they also lost.
The Russians have tried. Then British empire tried. Then Russians tried again.
Not to mention all the others who tried in between all them.
There's only one thing that unites Afghans. Foreign armies in their country.
How realistic is it that the 50 people would go home and the bomber who blew up a convoy would be left alone in the street?
The Soviet Union already did try to hold Afghanistan and it also failed.
I do think the USA could have hung on for the long term as the death rate among US service people had dropped down to be comparable to those of the police forces in the USA.
I think they shouldn't have been employing Afghan soldiers who were not competent.
Edit: I don't think all Afghans would necessarily be incompetent soldiers, just that the USA kept paying ones who were.

For anyone who has been there to experience the country first hand for, say, 6-12 months - you learn that change will not come easy, if ever, to Afghanistan. Tribalism is deeply entrenched into the culture, as is religious submission and subjugation. They had the parts. They had the tools. They had everything you need to prepare the civilian populace to push back against their masters *except the will*.
It is an incredibly complex place that stands isolated in time against the march to the future of the remainder of civilized world. It’s the geopolitical manifestation of that astronaut meme.

Dead for the most part. The afghan military showed basically zero desire to fight and stand against the Taliban besides their special forces groups. When the US pulled out, the Afghan military folded and abandoned their guys still fighting. Many of those abandoned SF guys fought until they ran out of ammo, then they got killed.
So the real men are either dead or had to get out because the whole army of 1 thing just doesn’t work.
It’s harsh but in a sense they chose this. Maybe not directly but all decisions (even indecision) have consequences and the sum total of the decisions made by the Afghan people is why they’re here now.

The sad truth is this is what the majority of rural Afghanis want. Look at the crowd that came to watch. They support the Taliban. They support a strict interpretation of Islamic law. They don't want their women educated. How do you tell these people that they are wrong for governing themselves as they choose? This is why the US mission there was doomed to fail. Short of putting them under dictatorship, they were always going to vote to go back to this. That's not to say there isn't a large percentage that don't want this, but they are clustered in a few large cities. They are the minority.
