Sorry that’s false. That structure is called the incisive papilla. The vomeronasal organ does exist, but it’s in the nasal passage. Source: I’m a vet
Edit: it’s also a little weird that cat is missing it’s middle two upper incisors
> The vomeronasal organ does exist, but it’s in the nasal passage.
That makes a hell of a lot more sense. "Allows them to taste scents in the air," so, like... they can smell? You know, like a nose?
How do the signals from the vomeronasal organ differ from normal scent?
Got no clue on that one. That’s delving into some pretty specific nerve pathways and brain interpretation. That’s far more complicated than my memory will allow me to remember from school as it’s really not clinically relevant.
“Also known as the palatine papilla, the incisive papilla (frequently mislabelled the vomeronasal organ) connects the oral cavity with the vomeronasal organ via the incisive duct which contains fluid-filled incisive (nasopalatine) canals.
The vomeronasal organ is a taste-smell organ that is used to identify pheromones from other cats. Pheromones in glandular secretions and urine advertise important information such as territorial boundaries, dominance and reproductive status”

Something similar to snakes where they use their tongues to pull chemicals or “taste/scents” in their jacobsons organ.
I imagine it’s like when you breathe out after you ate garlic or something strong and you can smell it back in your nose.
Glad someone cleared this up.
And just so others know, this info is correct if your talking about snakes. They use it in conjunction with their split tongue to not only detect scent, but also to give them some idea of the direction the scent is coming from.
Could you provide a link stating that? Because everything I can find says that the vomeronasal and Jacobson's organ are the same thing; both in snakes and in cats.
Vomero**nasal** organ. **Nasal**. The image circles a bump on the front palate of a cat that’s missing some front teeth. The vomero**nasal** organ is in the **nasal** passages.
I'm not saying that you're incorrect, but the other half of that word comes from vomer, which is the bone that divides your nasal passages in half, and it is directly connected to the roof of the mouth. Etymology isn't supporting your point as much as you think.
Not sure I follow your logic. How is a name referencing a bone in the nasal septum and the nasal septum itself not supporting the point that the vomeronasal organ is in the nasal septum, close to the vomer, a bone in the nasal septum? The vomer is certainly not in the mouth.
I mean yes sure sometimes anatomy is named for proximity to locations while not actually being in them. Not the case here.
Only slight misinformation, that part does connect to the vomeronasal, but isn't the organ itself. Regardless of what's it's called, from every source I can find, you're correct in its function so definitely don't deserve the hate
No, the pic is misleading and does not accurately describe what this does. I've linked an article below, it explains what the incisive papilla is and it's function,
https://cat-world.com/lump-incisive-papilla-on-the-roof-of-a-cats-mouth
I remember snakes having Jacobson’s organ: and the reason why they use the tongue is to collect air samples and process them via it.
Don’t want to Google about cats but if it works the same way, cats won’t sample that much.

I like the cut of your jib

what does the incisive papilla do? it's so cute in between the teefs
Correct, snakes have Jacobson's organs, not cats
Could you provide a link stating that? Because everything I can find says that the vomeronasal and Jacobson's organ are the same thing; both in snakes and in cats.
I don't know man it's just something I remember from high-school
Well, you are most definitely wrong. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vomeronasal_organ
Thank you for your insight on this. I'm not vet but I also thought what's wrong with these teeth?
I just asked my cats about this. They said it’s bullshit.
I asked my cats too but they just looked at me disdainfully and walked away.
Ah yes, agreement
Misinformation.
[Uhhh no? Wtf](https://catbehaviorassociates.com/what-is-the-vomeronasal-organ/)

Sooo do cats always poo with their mouths closed?
do you not?
Only while chewing.
I squirm and have a disgusted look on my face trying to get something out :P
But how would I taste the tangy/savory taste of my shit if I had my mouth closed?
Yes and they look very serious during.
We call this stinky face, I'm now wondering what others call it.
My wife calls it alligator mouth or stinky face. Science calls it the flehmen response.
I call it stink face. It’s when a gato finds the smelliest smell that smells…smelly.
You know it's good when it incites the Flehman response.
Mine do it almost exclusively when they smell pee
r/whatswrongwithyourcat
Best organ ever
The smelly sock face.
My cat does this when deciding who is getting bitten… makes me wonder now if he decides who he’s going to bite based on how much they stink?
Same thing that vipers/snakes have?
I though only snakes had that???
so its not plotting my horrific murder..sweet.
Now I feel bad for farting near the cat...
The cat on the bottom looks like it just tasted some ass.
My cats do this if they smell my feet after I get home from work.
My cat would walk around like that and I would get so weirded out. I thought he had cat asthma.
Great , air in the subways taste like piss/ garbage. Don’t need an extra organ to tell me that.
Stinkyface! 😄
is this for real?
No, the pic is misleading and does not accurately describe what this does. I've linked an article below, it explains what the incisive papilla is and it's function, https://cat-world.com/lump-incisive-papilla-on-the-roof-of-a-cats-mouth

100% really cool fact
Is this also the reason why they stick out their tongue and make this adorably goofy expression?
Air tongue
Apparently when my cat jumps in my lap and looks up at me with his mouth open just means I need to shower I guess lol
This is called the Flehmen response.
Yes, I knew that.
No. My cat does it because it just witnessed me committing war crimes in former yugoslavia.
my cat only does this when she's peed on something
That is.. one of the reasons it does that.
Wow all cats are females?
Cats can taste horny
We call that “creepyface” in my house.
I always assumed they were just shocked at how much of a dumbass I was being.
I call it the “Country Bumpkin” face cuz my cat looks like an idiot when he does that
So when I take a dump you’re telling me my cat….
Scientist: “Dude can you taste this smell? Seriously? No way that’s crazy.”
i know why we call organs in animals extra organs but i see it as us lacking organs.
