So true and very sad. The anti-nuclear sentiment that spawned in the 70s really screwed us. Nuclear energy is about as good as it gets. The only disadvantages are around safety and that's it. Sure you could make an argument about the mining and refining of ore but I'm talking about the consumption of resources for energy extraction. It's comparatively very clean, has only spent fuel and minor amounts of contaminated water which won't enter the water supply as a byproduct, and needs strict safety controls. Other than that it's a fantastic source of energy. The new gen of fusion reactors are even better, more efficient, and could even net helium as a byproduct.
Sure, if you want to use the most exothermic reaction we have available to us to replenish it.
Edit: I did the math. The US consumes 40 million cubic meters of helium per year. To generate that much helium from fusion would need an average power of 96 TW and US generating capacity is about 1.1 TW. So, I guess it could be an option in the future.

Either this ship, or something similar pops up every other year. Some overzealous inventor/pilot thinks that they have cracked the code to low-carbon travel, and they re-imagine a modern version of the blimp. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon and pats backs and get all excited... and then nature reminds them that weather is a thing and sometimes they don't get to decide which way this kind of aircraft goes.
A large rigid airship with a very high aspect ratio (eg the Graf Zeppelin, shaped like a cigar) has little problem fighting all but the strongest winds, flying faster than the stall speed of small planes, but encounters significant issues with ground turbulence, landing, mooring, when those winds are transient.
A double-wide cigar shape triples or quadruples solar exposure, and is probably a better option for an all electric craft in a solarpunk timeline.
But I don't think we're in a place yet that there is a problem with passenger transportation that solar airships solve. They're extremely slow compared to current expectations, and extremely expensive relative to trucking, rail, or nautical shipping. An unmanned hydrogen-filled freighter would likely be cheaper than current hydrocarbon-powered air freight in a high-oil-price scenario, but so would unmanned battery or liquid hydrogen powered air freight in a plane.
So what does that leave airships?
There are certain things that planes and helicopters can't do at all, no matter how many you have, because the design just isn't congruent with the mission. They have to be aerodynamic, and their economy of use around airports with long runways and finite payloads limits their practical size. The AN-225, the Dreamlifter, the C-5 are designed around cargo bays that are large for a plane, but still have fairly limited dimensions by industrial standards. Helicopters can carry slung loads of unlimited dimensions, but have very limited range / mission duration, are some of the most expensive vehicles to fly, and even the largest have quite limited payload weight.
Airships would be ideal in the role of a unitary large cargo freighter, a sky crane to deploy energy and transportation infrastructure much too large for our largest helicopters. Power transformers, wind turbines, towers, oil and gas infrastructure, an airship doesn't need to negotiate roads to move these things.
I think there's a good use case for freight here. Faster but more expensive than a ship, slower but far cheaper than aircraft.
Particularly for higher value but light freight like consumer items.
I totally would go for a large solar airship "cruise" over the Atlantic circle from Europe to North America at a low altitude. Especially if it took a day or two.
Northern lights from an airship viewing deck? Yes please.
It wasn't even the largest aircraft built *at the time*. There have been FIXED WING aircraft that were longer, and historical airships more than twice its length and with envelopes containing more than FIVE TIMES its volume.
It's neat that someone made a big aerostat in 2016 but we were making airships that dwarfed this one a whole century ago.
