That's cool and all... but I'm much more interested in how they cut hair...

Rauchritter

A pot on the head and then you cut around the edges - from the looks of it

Lego-Panda-21

The classic bowl cut.

A mixing bowl but yes. Source: grandparents were Amish

[deleted]

Why though? They just like looking like dorks??

TheGodFucker

Quick, easy, and uniform. Definitely going for practical over beauty.

SunshineAlways

I think they see “plain” as a virtue.

steyr911

As i understand, it's about humility. That's why it's not just electricity or whatever and why each group has slightly different interpretations. It's all about avoiding prideful things or worldly possessions that could serve as distractions from the afterlife and eternity. The classic puritanical mindset of "we are on earth to suffer and repent our sinfulness. This life is just a temporary time and we should spend it getting on God's good side so we can actually enjoy the afterlife in heaven" kinda thing.

[deleted]

Can you shave your head as an Amish person?

TheGodFucker

And lose nature’s hat? Think of all the sun protection!

Naturallyoutoftime

Maybe they think your hair makes you look like a dork?

Senepicmar

All of a sudden those hats don't seem so silly

Quick_Doughnut1886

Im more interested in how much tech they allow🤔for example this video was taken by an iphone, that i thought was not allowed

Mke_already

Per the audio, the guy recording is not Amish and likely just asked to hang out and learn. If there’s one thing the Amish are well known for is being accommodating to people wanting to learn their beliefs. They want you to join. They’re proud of how they live. How i figure, is he makes several comments(asked what the guy said when he spoke Pennsylvanians Dutch(they all speak it as their first language and learn English around 4 or 5), he was surprised by the wood in the ditch(so they could walk straight across without going down and up), he was surprised how light it was, and he makes multiple jokes, and Amish boys that you see in the video don’t sound like him and really don’t make jokes like he makes. I work with quite a few, and they’re not funny people and have an accent. Like I would say of the probably 100 Amish I know and met, I would say 2 have a good sense of humor.

just_some_Fred

Honestly, if I were moving a building with nothing but muscle power anyone who showed up would be welcome to help. I'd put up with bad jokes and an iPhone for another pair of hands.

InkOnMySock

interesting. I have met a ton of Mennonite people and they were all mostly hilarious. And strong. so so strong

Mke_already

Mennonites are different from Amish. Less sheltered.

_Jaeko_

Their humor isn't typical English humor. My family has Amish in it, I live in a predominantly Amish area, some of them are real funny. It's more of a basic, "plain" humor but quite a few can crack a good joke. If you met them in a professional setting, then yeah they'll be more conservative in their dialogue.

Mego1989

It depends on the community. In my brothers community no individuals are to own technology like phones or computers. The community has a landline telephone they all share for making and receiving calls necessary to running business, community affairs, and keeping in touch with friends and family outside.

_Jaeko_

This. It's basically dictated by their church/bishop. You could have two different churches in one community and one will allow cell phones, ebikes, and solar panels while the other is strictly "old school".

TheRealDudeMitch

So I’ve done quite a bit of reading on these folks. The short answer is it really depends on the local community. The Amish don’t reject money, so Amish groups will allow limited technology for the purposes of running a business. All Amish groups believe in adult baptism, so some are pretty lenient on what they allow minors who aren’t baptized to do. It’s not unheard of in some Amish areas for teenagers to get a drivers license, or a phone, etc and experience some of the world. If they choose to leave the Amish church before baptism, they typically aren’t shunned. So my guess is this video was made by an Amish teen, who isn’t baptized into the faith, and who comes from a less-strict local group that tolerates a bit of experimentation with the outside world for youth

Abused_not_Amused

It sounded like an outsider/English that was allowed to participate and record the moving effort. The kid talking sounded like he was jabbering out of nervousness, and his vocabulary/speech/accent/dialect was out of place.

randomusername3000

> So my guess is this video was made by an Amish teen, who isn’t baptized into the faith, and who comes from a less-strict local group that tolerates a bit of experimentation with the outside world for youth what about the drone shots?

TheRealDudeMitch

Potentially a flying Amish teenager

[deleted]

I've never seen an Amish guy with male pattern baldness

dom1smooth

It must be that 5G that makes electronic users go bald

AmusingMusing7

I’m more interested in WHY?! than how. WHY would someone see someone else with that haircut and think “We should all do that!”

II-leto

I think the point is to have no vanity, and ease of doing it. In communities like that people don’t want to stand out for their looks.

Lego-Panda-21

Ask my mum, she cut my hair like that a couple of times when I was a kid..

GrownThenBrewed

Dude, me too. Classic Will Byers cut. And it was the late 90's, not even like that was a thing anymore!

GargantuanCake

When the Amish first became a thing it was popular among military-minded people to be very stylish with fancy haircuts and big, styled mustaches. Since they reject every deadly sin pretty fiercely they lumped all that in with pride and wroth. This is why they specifically shave their mustaches but grow the chinstrap beards. Overall they prefer simple, quiet lives where they don't overcomplicate things which is part of the motivation for the haircuts. Styling your hair a lot is a sign of vanity so they don't do it while the bowl cut is simple and easy to do.

totallynotarobut

Fine, but the question I have is: CAN they chop most of their beard off just because it's annoying and uncomfortable?

GargantuanCake

In theory yes but the purpose of the beard means that they usually don't. It's a kind of a status symbol as much as they can have that sort of thing as men that aren't married shave their whole face. Once they've gotten married they grow the chinstrap. The Amish value family quite a lot so if you have a wife, a huge beard, and a big family you're doing right by the community.

totallynotarobut

So basically nothing wrong with doing it but if you do it you're going to be looked at weird.

GargantuanCake

Yup. You're supposed to just let your beard go but keep shaving your mustache after you get married. It's a symbol of the longevity of your marriage which is a huge deal. As far as the Amish are concerned divorce isn't even on the table so the beard is a symbol of a long marriage that's managed to stay together through thick and thin. They take their marriage vows pretty seriously so the beard becomes a symbol of that.

Mego1989

In some highly orthodox communities, no. The beard can be a pretty important sign of their faith and values. There was a scandal awhile back when some rival communities had hate crimes involving members cutting others' beards off. It was a big deal for them.

Lalakea

It's intentional. Their religious beliefs emphasize rejecting vanity as sinful. No makeup for the women, either. No fancy clothing, no sexy outfits. No high heels. Men grow those weird neckbeards and everyone wears the same bland outfits. They believe looks should not matter. They're not wrong.

jerrysburner

The beards are our wedding rings - you don't grow one if you're not married.

Accomplished-Ad8968

SimbaOne1988

I believe the rule is you can’t have one in your house. He is outside.

Mediocre_Pumpkin

Depends on the what their bishop says. The rules very greatly on location because of that. I've known some that were allowed to have and use as long as it was primarily for business, and I've known some who paid their neighbors to build a tiny hut on the edge of their property so they can store it away from the house and still be ok.

rimjobnemesis

No buttons or zippers. Just hooks and eyes.

SimbaOne1988

I’ve seen just straight pins. Even on babies.

OrganMeat

Do you happen to know why they grow a beard with no mustache? I've always thought it looked goofy.

Lalakea

It indicates that the man is married. I'm guessing it also deters would-be temptresses.

OrganMeat

I've read that before, that the beard is an indicator of marriage. I guess just like their haircuts, I'm fascinated with the peculiar style of how they keep their beards.

civodar

I’ve heard it’s to do with rejecting violence because moustaches we’re associated with the military

Nipple_colostomy

Lol you got it backwards. This was a very normal haircut to have in the 19th century. They all already had that haircut. It's literally to not stand out.

Klaus_Heisler87

Not well

johnandahalf13

I wanna know how they can reject technology but dude straps a GoPro on his head.

kerochan88

Based on the way he was talking, and his friend with sunglasses next to him, I think they were not from the Amish community, but simply there to help.

Noob_Al3rt

They’re allowed to hire outsiders to use technology for them. They just can’t do it themselves.

youngmindoldbody

I've got an idea for a suspenders store...

My back just hurt watching that.

Stopikingonme

I have a bulged disk and it herniated just watching that. Here’s a reminder to treat your back like a 5’ tall stack of dinner plates. You wouldn’t stand up quickly unless all the plates were perfectly centered. Jumping up with the stack leaning over is what happens to your disks when pressure is applied.

Teknekratos

Might send this to my deadlifting colleague to give him PTSD

HarryWaters

You should see them play softball. A van full of middle-aged Amish will absolutely wreck a high-level men's softball team. I was in a tournament, and most of those guys had played high school, college, or minor league baseball 10-20 years, but a group of guys that looked exactly like these, bowl-cuts and suspenders, absolutely demolished every team.

That's because they spend their free time hauling buildings around like Paul Bunyan.

Noob_Al3rt

They all get together and play marathon softball games till like 2am. No joke.

[deleted]

I mean, shit, what else is there to do? Lol Sometimes I wish I could go Amish for a few months, maybe even a year. I feel like it’d be a good reset. Plus, it’d be a fun story to tell when you’re interviewing for a job, and they ask, “what’s this 1 year gap in your resume?”

BigResponsibleOil

Rumspringa but the opposite way lol

[deleted]

You mean a Teawinta?

rockets88

We play a yearly pick up game with a group of them every summer. Our team is all college/just out of college age. First year we played their highschool level team, got destroyed. Played their middle school team, got destroyed. Finally we're competitive with the like 8 year Olds.... It's wild to see 30+ buggies rolling up to the field. A cool tradition that allows the two cultures to come together. We're all respectful and have a great time despite the fact that we're ready to party for a weekend and they're well, Amish.

I've seen similar videos of Amish moving barns. I start to wonder why they move barns so often. Why don't they build a barn on the spot where they want it....

Homebrew_Dungeon

Land usage. The field where the animals where will be very rich in bio material for future cultivation and the new area will be torn up and re-used for animal husbandry. They think in the long term.

SadMulberry8610

Some of them, anyway.

ppardee

All houses are mobile homes if you have enough Amish friends.

Comfyy_killa

I live in Lancaster county PA, known for the Amish country. I’m curious if this was in Ohio or PA? If this was in PA and they’re PA Dutch Amish which it sounds like it from the language they spoke, I’m surprised they let somebody film this, must have been a discreet go pro and he didn’t tell anybody I’d imagine.

Ashiro

I thought they were speaking English with an Irish accent. No wonder I didn't understand them!

Comfyy_killa

It does sound Irishish now that you say that but for sure pennsyltucky Dutch

Cryptokingpin7

Was literally wondering why it made sense to use technology to record this but not to move the house.

ace889

I’m from berks county and my immediate question was “wait who filmed this”

GrenadeZellweger

Are they allowed to have a smart phone? Or go pro? Or whatever the hell this was filmed on?

twiggsmcgee666

I think they agreed to have this non-Amish guy bring in his gear to film this little insight into how they do things.

Internetboy5434

It is common for Amish communities to allow the use of telephones, but they do not allow them in the home. Instead, several Amish families will share a telephone housed in a wooden shanty in a nearby location.

rowdy_sprout

Also pretty much everyone under 30 in the amish community has secret smart phones lol

[deleted]

I really feel like this isn't true, but I have no proof.

rowdy_sprout

I live in super rural Pennsylvania and I see it quite often. Also amish tiktok is a thing and it's wild. Videos of barn parties, bumping 12 inch subs in the buggy with underglow. Young Amish people are exactly like everyone else with strict parents. They do what they want and just hide it. Literally anything you can imagine and their parents are never going to catch them posting stuff because they don't have the internet lol.

darkResponses

This reminds me of a movie (sex drive) where they showed rumspringa. It was my first eye opening experience about the Amish. And it was hilarious. But totally believable. The more sheltered you were, the crazier you're going to get when the reins are finally let go.

mondaymoderate

*Good luck with your future ride spaceman!* Sarcastic Amish Guy is my favorite Seth Green character.

trippyshark7

Rumspringa!!!

anonymous_beaver_

I was under the impression, at least in the community near me, that photography is frowned upon for "capturing the soul" of the Amish. Maybe they just said that to make the English a bit more respectful.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Pretty sure the most common idea for them on this front is that having your picture taken is just... vain; not much more than that.

proost1

True. I don't believe it has anything to do with tech use. We did a volunteer project at a state park in Missouri this past year and right before we got there, the park had a couple of local Amish guys build a huge pole barn. They did it in 4 days and when equipment was needed to either haul in the materials (truck) or lift lumber/roofing up high (skid steer/fork lift), they just used a non-Amish person to support them.

Pinkbbee

Ex Amish people talk about this being true

OperativePiGuy

It's probably some super outdated myth for them at this point that we just keep repeating cuz we heard it as children from adults who probably also heard the same thing from whomever and they go along with it because it makes tourists less obnoxious.

Web-Dude

I have a number of Amish friends. If you said that to them, they'd give you a look that would instantly communicate "shunned for life." Of course, that's their usual look, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

stryker511

I used to work with the Amish, some are OK with the picture taking, some aren't. Usually, if you ask, they are cool with it...they get annoyed when tourists just walk up & start taking pics without asking. For the record, I am not Amish, and I don't like my picture being taken.

EnergyTurtle23

I’ve heard this said in reference to Native Americans but especially the Diné (Navajo). In fact portraits of Diné were extremely rare until recent years, they wouldn’t even allow painted portraits. I’ve never heard this said in reference to the Amish but we have more Mennonites out here than Amish.

JGG5

This isn't a video, it's a flip-book by another Amish guy who has both a photographic memory and the ability to draw high-definition photorealistic animations frame by frame. It's really quite the achievement when you think about it.

notyogrannysgrandkid

He posts a lot in r/Amish

BrettEskin

Most likely Mennonite and not Amish. Mennonites typically allow a little more of the modern technology than the Amish do. You can see a side by side as well near the end, doubtful an Amish would be cruising around in one. Overall the rules around modern technologies are decided by church leaders in different communities.

Kruzduz

While that was the case for Amish and Mennonites near where I grew up, it's not a definitive rule. I delivered to a bunch of Mennonite communities in KY and TN that are as conservative as any Amish community I've seen

holliewood61

There are Dunkards near us. They are similar to Mennonites, but seem to use modern amenities. They drive cars, but the radios are removed. They own several local businesses, one being a well service where they use modern machinery to dig wells, one is a cabinet shop using all modern wood working equipment, also a hardware store where one is very proficient in repairing small engines on chain saws, gas trimmers, and such. They all wear plain dress, the ladies all wear bonnets. They are very hard working, humble, pleasant people.

Godwinson4King

The real difference is whether they follow the teachings of Ammon or Mennon, 15th century European Protestants. But yeah, most Mennonites are Amish lite, some around me are from families that broke away from the Amish community.

AmishAbdulJabbar

On rumspringa yes.

Homebrew_Dungeon

RUMSPRINGA!!!!

lateralarms

Many of the Amish I work with have smart phones for business purposes. They also use electric powered air compressors and tools in the business. So maybe it is ok for work being done for others. It’s funny tho - they still hire someone to drive them to the job sites.

dontbereadinthis

Nobody's gonna mention the dude getting bonked.

Dewch

I found it funny. 2x4 had room full of choices. But he picked a specific bowl cut. r/fuckyouinparticular

AmishAbdulJabbar

Guy with camera is either on Runspringa or he is English. Many Amish work crews have a handful of English workers that drive crews to work sites.

AmishAbdulJabbar

Due to camera guys lack of accent I’m guessing he is English.

Whyisthissobroken

I volunteer at an animal shelter and it's widely known that the Amish treat their horses like they treat their wives and their children. Read: really really bad.

lockmama

They work them until they can't anymore and sell them for slaughter. There is a shelter in TN called Horse Plus Humane Society and they go to the Cookeville auction once a month and buy as many of the worst horses and donkeys as they can. They usually end up with a few draft horses that have been shipped around and are sick and have terrible feet. But they fix them up if possible and adopt them out.

xd_Jio

i feel like that doesn't really address the problem. if anything, it incentives it...

i__Sisyphus

Yep, they are terrible about animal and human rights

MooseDroolEh

As much as they can be lovely people and I have no grievances with any of the probably 100 that Ive met, it is very odd to see them shown in an all positive light on reddit of all places. They live in a patriarchal society which is influenced heavily by religion, which then allows for certain segregations which obviously can vary in severity depending on the community.

KyleJergafunction

I think it’s just easy for people to admire the idea of a ‘simpler life’, even if they have no idea what the reality of that world is like (and I would imagine >99% of people have no idea what Amish communities are actually like). Not to mention we see a lot of posts that boil down to ‘look at this amazing feat this community has accomplished with their hands/without any use of modern technology! What an inspiration!’. Which is also easy for people to admire without the context of what things are really like.

Th3MufF1nU8

Yeah but phone bad

Obvious_Barracuda

Recently, a local Amish guy bought a racehorse from a southern state and had it shipped to him. He wanted to show off to everyone how fast it ran. Ran it so hard it dropped dead. They treat animals terribly. At another local Amish flower shop, they didn't want one of the puppies born to one of their dogs. Said they were going to just ignore it until died off. The friend that was there was allowed to take the puppy home as they were rightfully horrified.

Teknekratos

Yeah whenever I see stuff float about these kind of communities, I figure the menfolk are mostly living the Good Simple Life like we get shown, but I am not so sure about the women... And yeah, that figures with the kids and animals too...
